Bryce, a reclusive game developer with a cult following, gets more than he bargained for when his bubbly, yoga-pant-clad neighbor Lana tries out the real-life firmware update on his new master rig. The HOA will definitely hear about this.

Chapter 6: Unlawful Couch Occupation

The key turned in the lock with a familiar, gritty resistance, but the bolt slid back with a soft, too-smooth click. Brice froze, his hand on the doorknob. He never forgot to double-lock it. Never. A cold thread of anxiety wound through his gut, the same feeling he got when a line of code refused to compile for the tenth time.

He pushed the door open slowly, the dim apartment revealing itself in layers. The usual chaos was there—the towering stacks of game cases, the faint glow of LED strips under shelves, the lingering scent of yesterday’s pizza. But there was a new sound. A low, rhythmic hum, and the soft, leathery creak of his couch.

And there she was.

Willow was splayed across his couch, her body a study in tense, graceful arcs. The bulky VR helmet obscured her face, its interior lights painting her cheeks with a faint, shifting cyan glow. Her limbs twitched, her fingers clenching and unclenching around invisible weapons. A soft, guttural “hnngh” escaped her lips as she twisted her torso, dodging some unseen dungeon horror. And curled in the dip of her stomach, a perfect, purring loaf, was his ginger cat, Morpheus, entirely unbothered by the seismic activity beneath him.

Brice’s anxiety evaporated, replaced by a wave of sheer, bewildered fondness. He dropped his keys on the counter with a deliberate clatter, but she didn’t flinch. He walked closer, stepping over a stray controller. “Willow?”

No response. Her entire world was digital.

He reached out, his fingers hovering just above the helmet’s release latch near her temple. He hesitated for a second, then pressed it. The seal broke with a hiss.

She gasped, her body going limp as the virtual world released her. She blinked up at him, her eyes wild and unfocused, pupils dilated. A flush of exertion painted her neck and chest. Morpheus, disturbed by the sudden stillness, stretched, dug his claws into her leggings once, then leaped gracefully to the floor.

“Brice!” Her voice was breathless, a little hoarse. “You’re back. You will not believe the run I just had. The Shifting Catacombs. Solo.”

“I see that,” he said, his voice dry. He picked up the VR helmet, its casing still warm from her skin. “How did you get in?”

A brilliant, mischievous grin spread across her face. She sat up, rolling her shoulders. “Picked the lock. It’s a surprisingly simple pin-tumbler. You should really upgrade.” She said it with the same casual pride she used to announce she’d mastered a new arm balance. “Learned all about locks in the Shadow Guild. ”

He stared at her, this sunlit creature of incense and flexibility, casually admitting to breaking and entering using skills honed in his game. The absurdity of it was so perfectly her that he couldn’t muster any real alarm.

“You broke into my apartment to play my game?”

“Not just to play,” she said, her grin turning sharp. “To conquer.” She took the helmet from his hands and placed it on the couch with a soft, definitive thud. Then she stood, unfolding her body with a dancer’s precision. The sudden movement sent Morpheus bolting from the room in a blur of orange fur.

Her eyes locked onto his, and the playful light in them shifted into something darker, more intense. It was a vampiric gaze, hungry and utterly focused. He felt the full force of her will, a palpable pressure in the air between them. He swallowed, the sound loud in the sudden quiet, and felt every one of his mental defenses crumble to dust.

She advanced, not with a rush, but with a slow, inevitable stride that pushed him back until his shoulders met the cool drywall. Her skin felt cool against his where her hands came to rest on his chest, a startling contrast to the heat building under his own. “I’m ravenous,” she whispered, her breath ghosting over his lips. “Feed your dungeon mistress.”

Then she claimed her minion, her mouth finding his in a kiss that was all command and no request.

Her kiss was a wildfire, consuming the last of his reservations and burning away the sterile silence of his apartment. He responded with a hunger he didn’t know he possessed, his hands finding their way into her hair, tangling in the soft blonde strands. The world narrowed to the taste of her, the feel of her body pressed against him, and the frantic beat of his own heart.

She broke the kiss, her breath coming in soft pants, and guided his hands to the hem of her top. “Help me with this,” she murmured, her voice a low thrum that vibrated through his bones. His fingers, usually so deft with a keyboard, fumbled with the fabric until he pulled it over her head, revealing the smooth, sun-kissed skin of her shoulders and back.

He stared, mesmerized, as she shrugged off her leggings with an effortless grace that left her standing in nothing but a simple, bright pair of underwear. The sight of her in his cluttered, dimly lit space was a jarring, beautiful contradiction. “You’re staring, developer,” she said, a playful smirk tugging at her lips.

“I’m cataloging,” he breathed out, his own voice rough with desire. He reached for her again, but she placed a firm hand on his chest, stopping him.

“My turn,” she whispered, her fingers making quick work of his hoodie’s zipper. She pushed the heavy fabric from his shoulders, letting it fall to the floor with a soft thud. Her hands slid under his t-shirt, her cool palms skating over his ribs, and he shuddered at the contact, his skin humming.

She led him to the couch, clearing a space among the scattered controllers with a sweep of her arm. The leather was cool against his back as she lowered herself onto him, her weight a perfect, welcome pressure. Her mouth found his again, softer this time, a slow, exploring kiss that made his head spin.

Later, tangled in the sheets of his bed, the only light coming from the blinking router on his nightstand, he traced the line of her spine. The scent of her, a mix of incense and their shared sweat, clung to his pillows. He felt a strange, expansive warmth in his chest, a feeling entirely foreign in his solitary world.

“I should give you a key,” he said, the words leaving his mouth before he could second-guess them. He propped himself up on an elbow to look at her.

Willow turned her head on the pillow, her eyes gleaming in the low light. A slow, wicked smile spread across her face. “I don’t need one,” she said, her voice laced with amusement. “Remember?”
