Chapter 7: Live Stream Surprise
Sunlight, real and unfiltered, poured through the large window, painting warm stripes across Brice’s face. He woke not to the hum of his own rig, but to the faint, sweet scent of sandalwood and the rustle of movement. He was in Willow’s bed. The memory of the previous night washed over him—the feel of her skin, the taste of her, the shocking rightness of her weight on him. A slow, unaccustomed smile touched his lips.
Then he heard her voice.
“And now, just breathe into that stretch,” she was saying, her tone a low, hypnotic purr. “Feel the energy uncoiling along your spine. Don’t force it. Let it flow.”
He pushed himself up on his elbows. The scene that greeted him was one of such profound and bizarre dissonance that his brain stuttered, trying to process it.
Willow was in the center of her studio, bathed in a shaft of morning light. She was arched in a perfect Downward-Facing Dog, her body a beautiful, strong line. But perched on her head, its sleek black curves utterly out of place, was his VR helmet. The visor was down, plunging her into digital darkness while she addressed the real world. A tripod stood a few feet away, her phone mounted on it, a small red light blinking. She was live.
“That’s it, my beautiful souls,” she breathed, her voice slightly muffled by the helmet’s padding. “Now, as you exhale, I want you to press your hips back, just a little more. Find that deep, delicious stretch in the back of your legs. Don’t be shy.”
Brice froze, his blood running cold. She was streaming. To her followers. While wearing a device that was currently displaying the fiery pits of the Netherworld, or perhaps the inventory screen from their dungeon run last night. The sheer, catastrophic potential of the situation locked his joints.
He scrambled out of bed, his heart hammering against his ribs. He grabbed his boxers from the floor and yanked them on, his movements frantic. He had to stop her. Now.
He padded silently into the main room, waving his arms in her peripheral vision. She couldn’t see him, of course. She was blind to everything but the game’s UI.
“Willow,” he hissed, keeping his voice low, hoping her microphone wouldn’t pick it up.
She shifted smoothly into a Three-Legged Dog, one leg stretching elegantly toward the ceiling. “Oh, yes,” she murmured, her voice taking on a throaty quality. “That’s the spot. You’re opening up so beautifully for me.”
The chat on her phone screen was moving fast. He could see the comments scrolling.
<3 Willow’s vibe today is so intense!
What is that on her head? New meditation tech?
This is the most focused flow I’ve ever seen from her.
kinda hot ngl
Brice felt a wave of pure, undiluted panic. He crept closer, directly into the camera’s view, and mimed taking something off his head. She just tilted her helmeted head, the motion awkward and robotic.
“Is there a presence?” she asked the stream, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I feel a shift in the energy. A tension.” She slowly lowered her leg and flowed into a Cobra pose, arching her back, her chest pressing forward. The helmet’s blank faceplate pointed directly at the camera. “Breathe through it. Welcome the disruption. Sometimes the most profound breakthroughs come from chaos.”
This was chaos, alright. He was two seconds away from a professional and social disaster that would make a server crash look like a minor hiccup. He took a final, desperate step and reached for the helmet.
His fingers found the familiar release latch near her temple. He pressed it.
The hiss of breaking seal was loud in the quiet room.
Willow gasped as the virtual world vanished, replaced by the sunlit clarity of her apartment. She blinked, her eyes struggling to adjust. She saw Brice standing over her, his face a mask of sheer terror. She saw her phone on the tripod. The blinking red light.
Understanding dawned, slow and then all at once. Her eyes widened. A slow, deep blush spread from her chest all the way up to her hairline.
“Oh,” she said. The sound was small, utterly unlike her usual confident tones.
He carefully lifted the helmet from her head. Her blonde hair was smashed flat and stuck out in damp tendrils. She looked adorably, devastatingly disheveled.
“Hey, everyone,” she said, her voice cracking slightly as she addressed the camera, a shaky smile plastered on her face. “So, that was… an advanced sensory deprivation flow. Very… immersive. We’re going to take a quick bio break. Love and light!”
She lunged for the phone, fumbling with the screen before the live feed finally cut out. The room plunged into silence.
For a long moment, they just stared at each other. Then a snort escaped Brice. Then another. He was laughing, a real, helpless laugh that shook his lean frame. The relief was a tidal wave.
Willow’s hand flew to her mouth, but her shoulders started to shake. A giggle slipped out, then a full-throated peal of laughter that echoed in the sun-drenched space. She collapsed onto her yoga mat, clutching her stomach.
“You… you were giving breathy instructions about ‘opening up’ while staring into a dragon’s lair,” Brice choked out, wiping a tear from his eye.
“I thought the UI was just… really intuitive today!” she wheezed, rolling onto her back. “I wondered why all the menu icons looked so menacing!”
Their laughter slowly subsided, leaving them in a comfortable, breathless quiet. Brice sat down on the floor beside her, his back against the couch. She shifted, resting her head on his thigh, looking up at him. Her eyes were bright with mirth and something else, something softer.
“You were trying to save me,” she said, her voice quiet. “You looked like you were facing a firing squad.”
“It was a distinct possibility,” he murmured, his fingers gently combing through her messy hair. “Your chat was getting… ideas.”
“Let them,” she said, a mischievous glint returning to her eyes. She reached up and traced the line of his jaw. “Though next time, maybe we make sure I’m not virtually blind before my morning stream.”
“Or,” Brice said, the words feeling bold and new on his tongue, “I could just make sure you’re too distracted to think about streaming at all.”
Willow’s smile was a slow, radiant thing. She stretched like a cat, her body brushing against his. “Now that,” she whispered, pulling him down toward her, “sounds like a much better game.”
