Chapter 4: Tests, Allies, and Enemies
My mind swirled with a whirlwind of information, thoughts buzzing like bees in a field of flowers. The countless lessons and insights shared by Captain Hawkswell had left an indelible mark on my consciousness, fueling an insatiable thirst for knowledge. As we walked along the outskirts of Port Royal, the bustling city gradually fading behind us, I couldn't help but marvel at the vibrant scenery that unfolded before my eyes.
The dense foliage consumed the landscape, creating a lush green canopy that seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon. The air hung heavy with the scent of tropical flowers and salty ocean breeze.
Captain Hawkswell's footsteps echoed softly on the worn cobblestone path, his presence commanding and confident.
As we ventured further into the outskirts of Port Royal, the atmosphere around us seemed to change. The air grew thick with a sense of anticipation, carrying with it an undertone of danger lurking beneath the surface. The dense foliage enveloped us like a protective embrace, casting intricate patterns of dappled sunlight onto the forest floor. Every step we took seemed to awaken the ever-watchful spirits of the jungle, their whispers echoing through the rustling leaves and swaying branches.
Later, what seemed like hours, as the night fell on the Jamaican sky, we found what appears to be a secret settlement or something.
"Welcome to the Hidden Cove," Captain Hawkswell said.
The Hidden Cove was a sight to behold — an oasis nestled amidst the untamed wilderness. The moonlight filtered through the dense foliage, casting ethereal shadows that danced upon the ground. The sound of rippling water echoed softly as we approached the bay, its gentle lapping against the shore like a whispered secret.
Everywhere we looked, pirates are doing their usual off-sea jobs: managing inventories, making dinner, trading weapons and belongings, and the like.
"Man, this place is teeming with pirate life," I said.
"Yeah," Captain Blackwood said. "Captain Hawkswell frequents this place."
As we stepped further into the Hidden Cove, I couldn't help but be captivated by the lively atmosphere that surrounded us. Pirates hustled and bustled, their rugged figures silhouetted against the glow of torchlight. The scent of saltwater mingled with the tantalizing aroma of fresh-cooked meals, creating a heady mix that hung in the air.
Captain Hawkswell led the way, his tall frame towering above the bustling crowd. We then found a makeshift tavern just near the central part of the cove. We decided to enter it to relax after a long day.
The tavern was a dimly lit, small place where various pirates come to drink their tires away after the long days at sea. We decided to find ourselves a table, then as we did, we asked for some mead.
As we were drinking our pints and conversed well, an overwhelming figure loomed before us. This was a male pirate wearing a crimson coat over a black shirt and a pair of pants the same color as the shirt. He had a beard covering most of his chin, and he had somewhat of a permanent scowl on his face. As Captain Blackwood gazed upon this scary figure, she hissed in frustration. It looks like she has a bad history with this guy.
"Well, well, well, looks like this fine lady here has gotten herself a Moor to assist her. How barbaric," the tall pirate said.
"Rodrigo, how could you say that to our new crewmate?" Captain Blackwell retorted.
"Wait, you know this guy?!" I exclaimed.
"This right here is Rodrigo El Terrible, Amir," Captain explained. "He was born in Cordoba, Spain, to a family of nobles. Ever since his parents died, he became the patriarch of his family. One day, he heard of treasures coming from the Caribbean. Thus, he decided to become a pirate in order to take those riches, using his father's ship as his own galleon. He based himself and his crew in Hispaniola and has been an ace in the field of piracy since."
"Man, what a man this Rodrigo is," I said. "When did you first meet him?"
"About 3 years ago, I suppose. Our ships met as we were hunting for the same treasure situated on Cuba. I was so close on getting that treasure, but that blasted Rodrigo beat me to it, GOD! I swore one day to avenge that loss and take Rodrigo down by hunting down his desired riches, even if it kills either of us."
"Not if I get to those riches first," Rodrigo said. "I will track down those fancy gold these days, and once I do, I will be the most powerful pirate in the Caribbean!" Rodrigo's words hung heavy in the air, his gaze piercing through me like a sharp dagger. The tension in the tavern was palpable, the flickering torchlight casting eerie shadows across his hardened features. I could feel Captain Blackwood's apprehension beside me, her grip on her tankard tightening ever so slightly.
A surge of defiance rose within me, a fierce determination bubbling beneath the surface. "Rodrigo sure is tough, but with my training, you may be able to surpass him someday," Hawkswell said.
"Hope so," I replied.
Rodrigo retained his attention to Captain Blackwood. "You see, recently, I have found a treasure of a golden llama sculpture that was afloat from a bottle and washed up here in Jamaica for some reason. It may be small, but imagine the money I can make with that one! Ha-ha-ha! Good luck trying to find a treasure to surpass that! Your Moorish companion can help in on your quest too! Ha-ha-ha!" Rodrigo left the tavern as he laughed menacingly. Captain gritted her teeth in fury.
"Well, looks like we have a plan," Captain Blackwood said.
