The college athlete, her husband’s first born from his first wife (also deceased), the college cheerleader, Isabella’s daughter, and the computer college grad, also hers.

Chapter 11: Forbidden Embrace

The hallway air clung to Isabella’s skin like a second layer of clothes, thick with the ghost of Marco’s voice still curling around her. Her pulse hammered in her throat, a drumbeat of fury and something darker, something she refused to name. She pressed her palms flat against the wall, cool plaster doing nothing to douse the heat under her ribs.

Her bedroom door creaked as she shoved it open, the familiar scent of lavender laundry detergent and dog-eared paperbacks doing little to steady her. The room felt smaller tonight—the floral wallpaper’s faded roses crowding in, the quilt’s frayed edges too close. She sat hard on the mattress, fingers twisting into the fabric like she could wring out the tension coiled in her muscles.

Buttons slipped under her shaking fingers as she tore at her blouse, the fabric gaping open to expose the flush creeping up her chest. She needed to burn this feeling out of her, scrape it raw until there was nothing left but quiet. The antique mirror across the room caught her reflection—wild-eyed, lips bitten red, a woman unraveling.

“Pathetic,” she muttered, dragging a hand through her tangled hair. The disgust sat heavy in her gut, sour as old wine. Letting him get under her skin again, after all this time? She shoved off the bed, legs unsteady, and crossed to the bookshelf.

Her fingertips grazed cracked spines—Austen, Morrison, a dog-eared collection of Neruda—but the words might as well have been in another language. Poetry slipped through her grasp, the book thudding shut when she couldn’t focus past the static in her skull. She exhaled through her teeth. Words had always been her armor. Tonight, they were just paper.

The curtains rustled as she yanked them aside, streetlight slicing across the floorboards. Outside, the sky was a spill of stars, indifferent and vast. For a heartbeat, the weight in her chest lightened—until Marco’s smirk flickered behind her eyelids again, smug as a stain.

She clawed at the hem of her skirt, bunching the fabric in white-knuckled fists. The spa’s steam rose in her memory—Donna’s manicured nails digging into her inner thigh, the wet sound of her own breath fogging the tiles. Her womanhood pulsed, swollen and slick against the seam of her panties.

The skirt pooled at her ankles. Cool air prickled her bare skin as she unhooked her bra, the straps slithering down her arms. Her nipples ached, stiff peaks begging for teeth, for Tony’s slack-jawed gaze fixed on those grainy videos of her bending over in that ridiculous uniform. Disgust curdled in her throat—or was it pride? The fabric had clung to her ass like cellophane, back when she was just a thing to be looked at.

She squeezed her eyes shut. The starch had itched against her collarbones. She’d hated the way the apron strings dug into her waist, hated the way his eyes followed her when she scrubbed the baseboards. Now Tony’s fist pumped to the rhythm of her younger self wiping windows, his breath ragged as the ropes of release landed on his stomach. Her fingers skated down her stomach, tracing the old stretch marks.

Isabella remembered her ear against Sofia’s door the prior evening—just enough to catch the hitch in her breathing, the creak of her mattress springs. Isabella’s fingertips dipped lower, brushing the damp lace between her legs. Memories flooded Isabella's mind. Of Sofia taking pictures of Marco while he showered. Of Marco catching Isabella peeking out of curiosity. Of Sofia's softly furred womanhood without panties.

A shudder wracked her. She imagined Sofia’s fingers instead of her own—clumsy, eager, smearing her wetness up her slit. Marco’s voice slithered through her thoughts: You like this, don’t you? Her middle finger plunged inside without warning, knuckle deep.

“Fuck,” she hissed, curling it against that spongy spot. The heel of her palm ground into her clit, rough and impatient. Donna’s laughter echoed in her skull, tangled with the wet sounds of Tony jerking off, Sofia’s bitten-off moans. Her hips jackknifed off the bed.

Faster. Harder. Her free hand twisted in the quilt, fabric tearing under her nails. The room stank of sweat and salt and her own desperation. She was close—so close—

Knuckles rapped against wood.

Isabella’s spine locked. “Shit.”

“Mom?” Sofia’s voice wavered through the door. “You okay? I heard you say something.”

Her core clenched around nothing. The choice crystallized: send her away, or—

“Come in, baby.” She licked her lips as she got up from the bed. After a minute's hesitation, the doorknob turned.

Sofia peeked in, her sleep-mussed hair catching the dim lamplight like copper wire. She froze when she saw Isabella standing there in just the thin nightgown, the outline of her nipples clearly visible through the fabric. "Oh shit, sorry," Sofia mumbled, starting to pull back.

Isabella's fingers tightened around the nightgown's hem. "No, it's fine, come in." Her voice came out huskier than intended. The scent of her own arousal still hung in the air - musky and unmistakable.

Sofia hovered in the doorway, chewing her bottom lip. Her oversized sleep shirt slipped off one shoulder, revealing the delicate freckles dusting her collarbone. "You sounded upset earlier," she said, eyes darting to the rumpled sheets.

"Just stress." Isabella sat on the edge of the bed, the mattress dipping under her weight. The nightgown rode up her thighs as she patted the space beside her. "Come talk to me."

Sofia shuffled forward, bare feet whispering across the hardwood. The moment she sat down, Isabella pulled her close, breathing in the coconut scent of her shampoo. Sofia stiffened for half a second before melting into the embrace, her warmth seeping through the thin fabric between them.

"You okay?" Isabella murmured into her daughter's hair.

Sofia's fingers plucked at the quilt. "Yeah. Just... can't sleep." A pause. "Mom?"

"Hmm?"

"Have you ever..." Sofia's voice dropped to a whisper, "touched yourself thinking about someone you shouldn't?"

Isabella's pulse jumped. A laugh escaped her - sharp and unsteady. "Christ, Sofi. Where'd that come from?"

Sofia squirmed closer, her thigh pressing against Isabella's. "I don't know. Just wondering if it's... normal."

The heat between Isabella's legs flared back to life. She stared at the wall where the wallpaper seam had peeled up slightly. "Everyone has thoughts they're ashamed of," she said carefully.

Sofia exhaled shakily. Her hand found Isabella's, their fingers tangling together. "Even about... family?"

The question hung between them, thick as honey. Isabella turned her head just enough to see Sofia's flushed cheeks, the rapid flutter of her pulse in her throat. Their noses almost brushed.

Isabella's free hand drifted to Sofia's waist, thumb tracing circles through the thin cotton. Sofia's breath hitched. The air between them crackled like static before a storm.

Slowly - so slowly - Sofia tilted her face up. Their lips hovered a breath apart. Isabella could taste the mint toothpaste on Sofia's exhale.

The first brush of lips was feather-light. Testing. Sofia made a small sound in the back of her throat and pressed closer.

"Come, lay with me." Isabella said. Her phrasing caused Isabella to giggle. Isabella simply sighed in return. "You silly goose."

Isabella pulled Sofia closer, their bodies pressing together beneath the quilt. The warmth between them grew heavy, the air thick with the scent of sweat and something muskier. Sofia's breath hitched as her mother's thigh slid between hers.

"Marco?" Isabella murmured, her fingers tracing the curve of Sofia's jaw. She felt the girl tense, then relax into the touch.

Sofia nodded, her auburn hair catching the dim light as it fanned across the pillow. "I know how it sounds," she whispered. "He's family."

Isabella's thumb brushed Sofia's lower lip. "Desire doesn't care about blood," she said, her voice low and rough. The words tasted like sin.

Sofia's hips jerked involuntarily. "But it's wrong," she breathed, even as her legs parted slightly.

Isabella chuckled darkly. "Then why does your body say otherwise?" Her hand slid down Sofia's neck, over the rapid flutter of her pulse.

Sofia whimpered. "I can't stop thinking about him," she confessed, the words tumbling out. "His hands, his mouth... God, the way he looks at me sometimes."

Isabella's fingers dipped beneath the hem of Sofia's sleep shirt, skimming the soft skin of her stomach. "Tell me," she urged, her own breath coming faster.

Sofia's nails dug into the quilt. "I can't," she gasped, arching into the touch.

Isabella pressed closer, her lips brushing Sofia's ear. "Does he touch you here?" Her hand slid lower, fingers teasing the waistband of Sofia's panties.

Sofia's hips bucked. "Yes," she moaned, the word barely audible.

"And here?" Isabella's fingers slipped beneath the fabric, finding Sofia already slick with arousal.

Sofia cried out, her back arching off the bed. "Fuck, yes," she panted, her thighs trembling.

Isabella's fingers circled Sofia's clit, slow and deliberate. "How many times have you come thinking about him?"

Sofia's breath came in ragged gasps. "Lost count," she admitted, her voice breaking.

Isabella increased the pressure, her fingers working in tight circles. "Show me," she demanded.

Sofia's hips jerked erratically, her body chasing the pleasure. "Oh God, Mom," she whimpered, her fingers twisting in the sheets.

Isabella watched the flush spread across Sofia's chest, the way her nipples hardened beneath the thin fabric. "That's it," she murmured, her own arousal soaking through her panties.

Sofia's thighs clenched around Isabella's hand as the first wave hit her. "Fuck!" she cried, her body bowing off the bed.

Isabella kept working her through it, drawing out every last shudder. "Good girl," she whispered, her own need pulsing between her legs.

Sofia collapsed back onto the mattress, her chest heaving. "I'm disgusting," she murmured, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes.

Isabella brought her wet fingers to Sofia's lips. "Taste," she commanded.

Sofia hesitated, then opened her mouth, her tongue darting out to lick her mother's fingers clean. A fresh moan escaped her as she tasted herself.

Isabella watched, her own core throbbing. "Now you," she said, guiding Sofia's hand between her legs.

Sofia's eyes widened as she felt the heat radiating through Isabella's panties. "Mom..."

Isabella pressed Sofia's palm firmly against her. "Make me come thinking about him too," she breathed.

Sofia's fingers trembled as she pushed aside the damp fabric, her touch tentative at first. Isabella groaned, her hips rolling into the contact.

"Harder," Isabella gasped, her hands fisting in Sofia's hair.

Sofia obeyed, her fingers finding a rhythm that had Isabella seeing stars. The room filled with the wet sounds of their shared pleasure, the scent of sex thick in the air.

Isabella came with a choked cry, her body convulsing around Sofia's fingers. They collapsed together, sweat-slick and breathless, the quilt tangled around their legs.

For a long moment, neither spoke. Then Sofia turned her face into Isabella's neck. "What happens now?" she whispered.

Isabella stroked her daughter's hair, her other hand still resting between Sofia's thighs. "Whatever we want," she murmured.

Outside, the wind rattled the windowpane. Somewhere in the house, a floorboard creaked.

The air between them was thick with the scent of sex and sweat, Sofia's body still trembling from the aftershocks. Isabella traced idle circles on her daughter's bare shoulder, the skin damp and warm under her fingertips.

"Just you and me," Isabella whispered, her lips brushing the shell of Sofia's ear. Her fingers tightened in Sofia's auburn hair, not enough to hurt—just enough to claim. "Our secret."

Sofia exhaled shakily, her breath tickling Isabella's collarbone. She shifted, the sheets rustling between their tangled legs. "But..." Her voice cracked. "Marco."

The name hung between them like a blade. Isabella's nails dug into Sofia's scalp. "He won't know." Her voice was steel wrapped in silk. "Unless you want him to."

Sofia flinched. Her fingers curled into the sweat-damp fabric of Isabella's nightgown. "No," she breathed. "I don't."

Isabella cupped Sofia's face, thumbs smearing the wetness clinging to her lashes. "Then it's ours." She pressed her lips to Sofia's forehead, lingering just a second too long. "Sleep."

Sofia's body went slack against hers, the tension bleeding out of her limbs. Within minutes, her breathing evened out, her lips slightly parted. Isabella stared at the ceiling, counting the cracks in the plaster.

Guilt coiled in her gut, acidic and familiar. She'd crossed a line that couldn't be uncrossed. But Sofia's thigh was warm where it pressed against hers, her heartbeat steady under Isabella's palm.

Protection. That's what this was.

The first birdsong pierced the predawn silence. Pale light crept through the curtains, painting Sofia's freckles gold. Isabella slid out from under her daughter's arm, the mattress creaking under her weight.

The bathroom mirror showed a stranger—hollow cheeks, smudged mascara, bite marks purpling along her throat. She turned the faucet on too hard, water splashing the porcelain.

Cold water couldn't scrub away the memory of Sofia's moans, the way she'd arched into Isabella's touch. The mirror fogged with steam, but the shame stuck to her skin.

A rustle from the bedroom. Isabella froze, hand hovering over the doorknob. What do you say to your daughter after you'd fucked her senseless?

She pushed the door open. "Rise and shine," she chirped, voice bright as a knife. Sofia blinked up at her, sleep-soft and rumpled. "Big day ahead."

Sofia's smile was slow, secret. "Yeah," she murmured, stretching like a cat. "Big day."

The lie settled between them, comfortable as an old coat. Isabella busied herself with the blinds, letting the sunlight wash over them both.

Some stains didn't show in the light.
