Chapter 13: The Aftermath
Marco stepped back from the desk, his chest rising and falling with each heavy breath. The air smelled like sweat and Donna’s expensive perfume, thick enough to choke on. He clapped twice—sharp, deliberate—the sound cracking through the room like a gunshot.
The door swung open before the echo faded. A doorman stood there, crisp in his uniform, face blank as a statue. He held out a black garment bag, stiff and pristine, like something from a high-end boutique. Marco snatched it without a word, unzipping it in one rough motion.
Inside was a maid’s uniform—but not the kind Isabella used to wear. This one was cut for her now, the skirt shorter, the bodice snug enough to outline every curve. A black lace mask sat on top, delicate as a spiderweb. Marco tossed it at her feet, the fabric fluttering before landing in a heap.
Isabella stared at it, her jaw tight. The anger burned hot, but beneath it, something colder settled in—resignation. She knew what this was. A reminder. A power play. A fucking joke. She exhaled through her nose and bent down, fingers curling around the soft fabric.
Donna was still sprawled across the desk, trembling, her skin glistening under the dim light. Isabella knelt beside her, ignoring the way Donna flinched. She wiped a tear from Donna’s cheek with her thumb, slow, almost gentle. Then she leaned in, her tongue dragging over Donna’s stomach, cleaning the mess Marco left behind.
Donna gasped, her breath hitching. “What—why are you—”
Isabella didn’t answer. She worked methodically, her movements precise, like she was back in another life, another uniform. When she was done, she stood, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. “Get dressed,” she murmured. “Marco’s taking me home.”
She disappeared into the bathroom, the door clicking shut behind her. The uniform fit like it was made for her—because it was. The skirt hugged her hips, the neckline dipping just low enough to tease. The mask obscured her face, turning her into something anonymous, something owned.
When she stepped back out, Marco’s smirk was all teeth. “Good girl,” he said, low and rough. He grabbed the keys to Isabella's Civic from her purse, jingling them in his palm. “Let’s go.”
The doorman bowed as they passed, his expression still unreadable. The hallway stretched ahead, all polished wood and silent portraits. Marco’s shoes clicked against the marble, steady as a metronome. Isabella followed, her own steps quieter, like she was afraid to make noise.
Outside, the night air was cool, a relief after the stifling heat of the bedroom. The Civic awaited.
Marco swung the passenger door open with exaggerated courtesy, his fingers lingering on the handle just a second too long. "After you," he murmured, eyes tracing the outline of the mask clinging to Isabella's flushed skin. The gesture reeked of performance, like watching a lion play at being tame.
Isabella slid into the worn seat, the leather sticking slightly to her thighs where the uniform rode up. The car smelled of old coffee and pine-scented air freshener, a far cry from Donna's cloying jasmine perfume. She tugged at the skirt's hem, suddenly aware of how much leg the uniform revealed.
The driver's side dipped as Marco settled in, his bulk making the compact car feel smaller. The engine coughed to life with its usual protest, the dashboard lights flickering like tired fireflies. He adjusted the rearview mirror slowly, deliberately, his reflection watching her instead of the road.
Gravel spat beneath the tires as they pulled away from the mansion. Isabella watched through the side mirror as the wrought iron gates swallowed the estate whole, its windows glowing like watchful eyes in the dark. The road ahead stretched empty, lined with skeletal trees clawing at the night sky.
Streetlights strobed across Isabella's face, the mask's lace pattern shifting like living shadows. She pressed a finger beneath the edge where it dug into her cheekbone. The fabric smelled new, still carrying the chemical tang of the packaging.
Twenty-three breaths passed in silence before Isabella cracked. "Thanks," she said, the word sour on her tongue. Outside, a neon diner sign buzzed, painting Marco's profile in garish pink.
His laugh was all teeth. "For the ride? Or the floor show back there?" The steering wheel creaked under his grip as they took a corner too fast.
"For shutting Donna up." She picked at a loose thread on the uniform's cuff. "When she called me..."
"Stupid bitch?" Marco finished, rolling the words like fine wine. His knuckles whitened on the gearshift. "Nobody talks to you like that." The car accelerated, pressing Isabella into her seat.
She turned toward the window, watching her warped reflection in the glass. "You enjoyed it," she accused quietly. The glass fogged slightly with her breath.
Marco's hand found her knee, his thumb tracing circles on bare skin. "I enjoyed watching you watch me," he corrected, voice dropping to a rumble. The heat of his palm burned through the thin fabric.
Isabella jerked away, her shoulder hitting the door. "Stop." The word came out strangled. Outside, highway dividers blurred into a continuous white line.
His fingers flexed in the air where her leg had been. "Why?" Marco challenged, downshifting to take the exit ramp too fast. "Scared you'll like it?" The Civic's suspension groaned in protest.
"I'm tired," she lied, crossing her arms over the ridiculous lace-trimmed bodice. The uniform's tag scratched at her nape with every breath.
Marco snorted, stomping on the gas as they merged onto the interstate. "Sleep then," he said, voice dripping with false concern. "You'll need your energy." The speedometer needle trembled near eighty as the Civic roared into the night, carrying them both toward whatever came next.
Marco's fingers drummed an impatient rhythm on the steering wheel, his jaw working like he was chewing on words he wouldn't say. The headlights carved tunnels through the darkness, illuminating road signs that blurred past too fast to read.
Isabella pressed her thighs together, the scratchy lace of the uniform's garter straps biting into her skin with every bump in the road. She watched Marco's profile in the flickering dashboard lights - the hard line of his jaw, the way his Adam's apple bobbed when he swallowed. The silence between them felt thick enough to choke on.
"Almost home," Marco muttered, downshifting as they approached the exit ramp. The engine whined in protest. He took the turn too fast, sending gravel spraying against the undercarriage. Isabella grabbed the door handle, her knuckles whitening.
The neighborhood looked different at night - the modest houses hunched in the darkness, their windows mostly dark. Marco pulled into the driveway too fast, the tires crunching on loose gravel. The headlights illuminated the peeling paint on the porch steps. The engine ticked as it cooled, the only sound in the sudden stillness.
Isabella reached for the door handle, her fingers clumsy. "Thanks for the ride," she mumbled, not looking at him. The words tasted like ash in her mouth.
Marco's hand closed around her wrist, his grip just short of painful. "Not so fast," he said, his thumb pressing into her pulse point. She could feel his heartbeat through his palm, steady and relentless. "My room, or yours?"
She turned to face him, her breath coming too fast. "We can't, not tonight," she said, her voice cracking. "Sofia's home. Tony's probably still up." The lies came easily, automatically.
Marco leaned closer, his breath warm against her cheek. "Even better," he murmured, his free hand sliding up her thigh. The lace tore slightly under his fingers. "I like an audience."
Isabella shoved his hand away, her nails leaving red trails on his skin. "Not... tonight," she hissed, her whole body trembling. The uniform's collar felt like it was strangling her.
Marco laughed, low and dark, as he pushed the door open. "Whatever you say, mom," he drawled, stepping onto the curb. The streetlight cast long shadows across his face, hollowing out his cheeks. He slammed the door hard enough to make the windows rattle.
Isabella watched him walk away, his silhouette swallowed by the shadow of the front door as he retired to his attic domain. Her hands shook as she exited the vehicle.
The house loomed before her, its darkened windows like empty eye sockets. A faint blue glow leaked from the basement window - Tony's computer, probably. She took a deep breath, the night air sharp in her lungs.
Inside backdoor that led to the kitchen, the floorboards creaked underfoot, each sound magnified in the stillness. The fridge hummed in the kitchen, the only sign of life. Isabella paused at the basement door, her fingers hovering over the knob.
The stairs groaned as she descended, each step measured. The basement smelled like stale coffee and overheated electronics. Tony was slumped over his keyboard, his face hidden in the crook of his arm. The screen cast an eerie glow across his slack features.
Isabella hesitated, the uniform suddenly unbearably tight. The lace itched at her neck, the seams pulling across her hips. She could still smell Donna's perfume on her skin.
She knelt beside Tony's chair, her knees pressing into the thin carpet. Up close, she could see the dark circles under his eyes, the way his lips parted slightly as he breathed. Her fingers trembled as she reached out, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead.
Tony stirred but didn't wake, his breath hitching as her fingers trailed down his neck. The scent of his shampoo - something cheap and citrusy - filled her nose. Her other hand found the zipper of his jeans, the metal cool against her fingertips.
The basement walls seemed to press closer in the dim light, the shadows stretching long across the floor. Isabella's pulse thundered in her ears as she leaned in, her lips grazing the warm skin behind Tony's ear. The night stretched out before her, endless and full of possibilities.
Isabella's fingers trembled slightly as they hovered over Tony's jeans, the denim rough under her fingertips. The zipper gave way with a quiet rasp that seemed deafening in the silent basement. She exhaled slowly, watching the way his chest rose and fell with each steady breath.
His jeans were always too big, sagging around his narrow hips in that way she used to nag him about. Now she was grateful for the extra room as she tugged them downward, the fabric sliding easily past his knees. They pooled around his ankles like discarded laundry, one sneaker still half-laced where he'd kicked them off earlier. The computer screen's glow painted his bare legs in eerie blue light, highlighting the sparse dark hairs and the sharp angles of his kneecaps.
Beneath the worn cotton boxers, the outline of him was visible - slender but long, resting soft against his thigh. Isabella's mouth went dry. She reached out before she could think better of it, her index finger tracing the shape of him through the thin fabric. Tony shifted in his chair, a quiet sigh escaping his parted lips.
The heat of him surprised her when she slipped her hand beneath the waistband. His skin was smooth and warm, the weight of him heavier in her palm than she'd imagined. As her fingers curled around him, she felt the first stirrings of response, the slow thickening that made her breath catch in her throat.
She leaned in closer, her lips brushing the tip where a bead of moisture had gathered. The taste was faintly metallic, tinged with sleep and something uniquely Tony. When she took him into her mouth, his hips jerked involuntarily, a low groan rumbling in his chest.
Her hands moved upward, fumbling with the buttons of his wrinkled shirt. The fabric parted to reveal his pale chest, the ribs visible beneath the skin. She dragged her nails lightly down his sternum, feeling the rapid flutter of his heartbeat beneath her fingertips.
Tony's eyes fluttered open as she pulled back, his pupils blown wide with sleep and arousal. "Mom?" His voice was thick, uncertain. The word hung between them, heavy with implication.
Isabella pressed a finger to his lips, feeling the warmth of his breath against her skin. "Shhh." The sound was barely more than an exhale. She reached for the mask still dangling around her neck, pulling the lace up over her face in one fluid motion.
Tony blinked up at her, confusion warring with desire in his expression. "Who is this?" His hand rose clumsily, fingers brushing the edge of the mask.
She didn't answer with words. Instead she leaned in, capturing his mouth with hers, swallowing his next question. The kiss tasted like sleep and the cheap energy drink he always kept by his computer. Some distant part of her registered that she should feel something - guilt, shame, anything - but there was only the strange detachment of watching herself from outside her body.
The lines blurred in the blue-lit basement - mother and maid, caretaker and seductress. The uniform's lace scratched at her skin, the mask's edges dug into her cheeks, but she barely noticed. Tony's hands found her hips, his grip tentative at first, then firmer as she deepened the kiss.
She wondered, as his fingers tangled in the ruffled hem of her skirt, if there was any coming back from this. The thought slipped away as quickly as it came, lost in the heat of his mouth and the weight of his body pressing her backward into the chair. The basement walls seemed to close in around them, the computer's hum the only witness to their descent.
