Worse, during their father’s illness, Donna had a falling out with the family who is now forced to move into Isabella’s humble abode. The college athlete, her husband’s first born from his first wife (also deceased), the college cheerleader, Isabella’s daughter, and the computer college grad, also hers.

Chapter 9: Beneath the Surface

The first step groaned under Isabella’s weight, the wood protesting like an old man’s bones. Another followed, each creak echoing through the narrow stairwell, the sound swallowed by the damp, musty air. The deeper she descended, the colder it got, the scent of mildew and dust thickening in her throat—like breathing in the ghosts of things left behind.

Halfway down, the dim glow of Tony’s monitor spilled across the concrete floor, a sickly blue light cutting through the dark. The steady clatter of his keyboard had stopped, replaced by something softer, wetter, a rhythm that made her stomach tighten before she even understood it. The air hummed with the low whir of his computer fan, the sound almost drowned out by the ragged pull of his breath.

She gripped the railing, her knuckles whitening. What the hell was she supposed to say? Sorry I almost fucked Marco in the kitchen? Sorry I let him talk about your stepmother like she was some trophy to be won? The words tasted like ash. Useless. Another step. Another. The screen flickered, and her gaze snagged on the grainy footage playing—security cameras?

Her pulse spiked. The image sharpened as she neared the bottom: a sunlit living room, all polished wood and high ceilings, the kind of place that smelled like money and power. And then—her. Younger. Thinner. Hair pulled back tight, her body wrapped in that fucking black-and-white uniform, the apron cinched just enough to accentuate the curve of her hips. The maid.

Her breath stuttered. She hadn’t seen this footage in years. Her ex had installed those cameras under the guise of security, but she knew the truth—he liked to watch. Liked to control. A hot rush of shame crawled up her throat, bile bitter on her tongue. She should turn away. Should run. But her feet stayed rooted, her eyes locked on the screen.

Then she saw Tony.

Slouched in his chair, his face slack with hunger, his fingers wrapped around his cock, stroking fast and rough. His lips parted around a silent moan, his hips jerking in time with his hand. The screen flickered—young Isabella bending over the coffee table, her ass straining against the thin fabric of her skirt as she dusted.

A jolt of ice shot through her. He was watching her. Watching her. Masturbating to footage of her.

Her stomach heaved. She should scream. Should smash the monitor. Should do something. But she couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. The past and present collided, trapping her in this sick, surreal nightmare.

On screen, the maid—her—ran a cloth along the piano keys, slow and deliberate, her fingers lingering. Tony’s breath hitched, his grip tightening, his cock glistening with pre-cum as he pumped faster. A groan slipped from his lips, raw and desperate.

Isabella’s skin burned. She wanted to look away. Needed to. But she was transfixed, forced to witness her own son lost in a fantasy of her—of the woman she used to be.

His hips bucked. His thighs tensed. A choked gasp tore from his throat as he came, thick ropes of cum splashing across his stomach, his chest heaving. And then—he collapsed in his chair.

Tony’s eyes fluttered open, unfocused, pupils blown wide. He blinked, his gaze drifting to the monitor, still playing the loop of her younger self. He smiled, a soft, dreamy expression that twisted Isabella’s insides. "God, I love her," he whispered, his voice thick with afterglow.

Isabella flinched. The words, so innocent, so full of longing, were like a knife twisting in her gut. She wanted to scream, to rip him from his fantasy, to tell him the truth. But the words caught in her throat, choked by a wave of nausea and shame.

Tony shifted in his chair, reaching for a crumpled tissue on the floor. He wiped his stomach absently, his eyes still glued to the screen. "I wish I could meet her," he murmured. "Just once."

Isabella’s heart shattered. The desire to protect him, to shield him from the truth, warred with the need to confess, to purge herself of this unbearable secret. She took a shaky step forward, her foot landing on a loose floorboard.

The wood creaked, the sound echoing in the small space. Tony’s head snapped up, his eyes widening as he registered her presence. His face flushed crimson, his jaw slack with shock. "Mom?"

He scrambled to close the laptop, his fingers fumbling with the mouse. The screen went black, plunging the basement into near darkness. "What are you doing down here?" he stammered, his voice barely a whisper.

Isabella stood frozen, her mind reeling. How could she explain? How could she possibly tell him what she had just seen, what she had just heard? "I… I wanted to apologize," she managed, her voice trembling.

Tony stared at her, his eyes darting from her face to the closed laptop. "Apologize? For what?" He stood up, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. "You don’t have to apologize for anything."

Isabella took another step forward, her gaze fixed on his face. "I was distracted," she said. "Upstairs. With Marco. I wasn’t listening to you."

Tony’s expression hardened. "It’s fine," he said, his voice flat. "I’m used to it." He turned away, heading toward the back of the basement, his shoulders hunched.

Isabella followed him, her heart aching. "Tony, please," she pleaded. "I want to understand. What were you watching?"

He stopped, his back still to her. "Nothing," he said, his voice muffled. "Just… old security footage." He hesitated, then added, "It’s nothing you need to worry about."

Isabella knew he was lying. She could feel it in the way he held himself, in the tension radiating from his body. "Tony," she said softly. "Please tell me the truth. Where did you get these videos?"

Tony remained rigid, his back a wall of defiance. The basement's single bulb buzzed overhead, throwing his shadow long and distorted across the concrete floor. "It's just some old videos, Mom. Leave it alone, okay?" He kicked at a loose floorboard, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the cramped space. His fingers twitched toward the closed laptop, then jerked away as if burned. "I found them in Dad's study. Well, to be more precise, I found Donna watching them in Dad's study."

His voice cracked on the word 'Donna,' his fingers twisting the hem of his t-shirt. "She didn't know I was there. I just... saw her through the crack in the door."

Isabella's breath hitched. "Donna was watching... this?" The image of Donna, polished and perfect in her designer blouses, sitting in that leather chair with her legs crossed while staring at footage of Isabella scrubbing floors—it made her stomach churn. "When?"

Tony shrugged, avoiding her gaze. "A few times. When Dad was... sick." He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "I'd come down to get something, and she'd be there, staring at the screen. Always the same videos." His fingers dug into his palms. "It was creepy, Mom. Really creepy."

"Creepy?" Isabella echoed, her voice barely a whisper. The word didn't even begin to cover it. Donna had been watching her like some kind of cheap voyeuristic entertainment. "It's beyond creepy, Tony. It's... it's disgusting." She took a step closer, the basement's cold air raising goosebumps on her arms. "Did she know you were there?"

Tony shook his head, his gaze fixed on a water stain on the concrete floor. "No. I always left before she saw me." He hesitated, then added in a rush, "I probably should have said something. But... I didn't want to make things worse."

Isabella reached out, her fingers brushing his arm. His skin was warm, damp with sweat. "It's okay, honey. You didn't do anything wrong." She paused, the question burning in her throat. "But if you knew Donna was watching them, why did you...?"

Tony flinched, pulling away from her touch like he'd been burned. He took a deep breath, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "Because," he blurted out, his voice cracking, "because I was obsessed with her."

Isabella's jaw dropped. "Obsessed?" The word tasted like bile. "With... the maid?" With me?

Tony nodded, his face flushing crimson. "I know it's messed up, Mom. I know." His fingers tangled in his hair, pulling slightly. "But I couldn't help it. She was so... beautiful. So innocent. So... different from everyone else."

"Different?" Isabella repeated, her voice trembling. The woman in those videos wasn't her—not really. Just some hollowed-out version, playing a role to survive. "What do you mean, different?"

Tony ran a hand through his hair, his eyes filled with a mixture of shame and something else—something desperate. "I don't know," he said, his voice barely audible. "She just seemed so... real. So genuine. Like she wasn't trying to be someone she wasn't."

Isabella stared at him, her mind reeling. He was in love with a ghost. A fantasy. A woman who only existed in grainy footage and his own twisted imagination. "So," she said slowly, her voice tight, "you copied the videos. For... private use." The admission hung between them, ugly and raw.

Tony nodded, his head bowed like a man awaiting sentencing. "I know it's wrong, Mom. I know." His breath hitched. "I just... I couldn't stop myself. Every time I saw her, I just wanted to... to..." He trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.

Isabella stepped forward, her hand reaching out to cup his cheek. His skin was hot beneath her palm, damp with tears she hadn't even realized he'd shed. "Tony," she said softly, her own voice thick. She pulled him into a hug before she could second-guess it, her arms wrapping tightly around his lanky frame.

He stiffened at first, his whole body going rigid. Then, slowly, he relaxed, his face burying into the crook of her neck. A sob escaped his lips, ragged and broken, and then he was crying in earnest, his body shaking against hers. Isabella held him close, one hand cradling the back of his head, the other rubbing slow circles on his back.

She didn't say anything. There were no words for this. No easy fix. Just the two of them, standing in the dim glow of the basement light, clinging to each other like they were the only solid things left in a world that had gone spinning off its axis.

Tony's tears soaked through her blouse, warm against her skin, his breath coming in ragged gasps against her collarbone. Isabella tightened her grip, her fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt as if she could somehow press the truth straight through the cotton and into his bones.

The weight of his confession pressed down on her, heavy and suffocating, like wet concrete hardening in her lungs. She wanted to tell him—needed to tell him—that the woman in those videos wasn't some distant fantasy, but her, standing right here, holding him while he cried over a ghost. But the words stuck in her throat, sharp as broken glass.

Tony pulled back slightly, his face a mess of red splotches and damp eyelashes. He swiped at his cheeks with the back of his hand, smearing the tears across his skin in streaks that glistened under the basement's single bare bulb. "I'm sorry, Mom," he mumbled, his voice thick with something between shame and defiance. His fingers twitched toward the closed laptop, then curled into fists at his sides. "I didn't mean for you to find out like this."

Isabella forced a smile, her lips trembling with the effort. "It's okay, honey," she lied, the words tasting like ash. Her gaze flicked to the laptop, its black screen reflecting the faint outline of her face—older now, harder, nothing like the wide-eyed girl in those videos. "But those videos... they're not real, Tony." She reached out, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "The woman in them, she roleplayed for your father."

Tony shook his head, his jaw working like he was chewing on the words before spitting them out. "I know," he said softly, his eyes dropping to the floor where a dust bunny clung to the toe of his sock. "But she wanted to play that role. Wanted to arouse men. Men like me."

The air left Isabella's lungs in a rush, like she'd been sucker-punched. She stumbled back a step, her hand flying to her mouth as if she could physically shove the words back into his mouth. "Tony," she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of what he'd just admitted. "You can't say things like that."

Tony looked up, his eyes burning with a desperation that made her stomach twist. "Why not?" His voice cracked on the question, raw and jagged. "It's the truth." He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the roots like he wanted to rip the thoughts straight out of his skull. "I've always been like this, Mom. Always fantasized about maids, about—about being taken care of, I guess."

Isabella recoiled, her skin crawling with the sudden, visceral understanding of what he was confessing. The room tilted, the shelves of old board games and holiday decorations swimming in her vision. "Tony," she said, her voice rising an octave, "stop it. Just stop it."

He stepped closer, his sneakers scuffing against the concrete. "Mom, please," he begged, his fingers twitching like he wanted to reach for her but didn't dare. "Just listen. I know it's messed up, okay? But I can't help it. I'm obsessed with her—with that maid. I want to meet her."

The plea in his voice—so earnest, so painfully young—made her chest ache. Isabella shook her head, her mind racing for a way out of this nightmare. "There's a timestamp, Tony," she blurted, her voice too loud in the cramped space. She pointed at the laptop like it was Exhibit A. "This woman is much older now."

Tony's face darkened, his lips curling into something that wasn't quite a smile. "It doesn't matter," he said, his voice dropping low, rough with a hunger that made her stomach clench. "If I saw that maid, in her uniform, today, now?" His fingers flexed at his sides. "I'd wreck her."

Isabella gasped, the crude words hitting her like a slap. Her face drained of color, her fingers going numb where they gripped the edge of the laundry table. "Tony," she said, her voice trembling with the effort to keep it steady, "you can't talk like that about women. It's not right."

Tony shrugged, the movement too casual, too careless for the gravity of what he'd just said. "It's just a fantasy, Mom," he muttered, kicking at a loose floorboard with the toe of his sneaker. "It's not like I'm actually gonna do anything."

The nonchalance in his voice—like this was some minor quirk, some harmless little kink—sent a fresh wave of nausea rolling through her. Isabella stared at him, her mind racing. She had to end this. Now. "I'm deleting them," she said, her voice firm as she reached for the laptop. "All of them."

Tony's face twisted, his calm shattering like glass. "No!" he shouted, the sound bouncing off the concrete walls. He lunged, his fingers scrabbling for the laptop, his nails scraping against the plastic casing. "You can't! They're mine!"

Isabella grabbed his wrist, her grip tight enough to bruise. "They're not yours, Tony," she hissed, yanking the laptop away from him with a force that sent him stumbling back. The screen wobbled as she slammed it shut, the click of the latch echoing like a gunshot in the sudden silence.

The basement held its breath. Somewhere upstairs, a pipe groaned. Tony stood frozen, his chest heaving, his eyes wide and wild like a cornered animal's. Isabella clutched the laptop to her chest, her own pulse hammering in her throat.

Then Tony's face crumpled. "You don't understand," he whispered, his voice breaking. "She's all I think about."

Isabella swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the edges of the laptop. Oh, she understood. Better than he could possibly know. And that was the problem.

She turned and took the stairs two at a time, the laptop burning in her hands like a live grenade. Behind her, Tony didn't follow. The basement door swung shut with a soft click, sealing away the truth—for now.
