Chapter 2: The Game Begins

Martina shuffled the cards with the lazy ease of someone who had all night and no doubt. The ring sat on the marble between us, amber light pulsing steady as a heartbeat. I watched her fingers move, the deck splitting and riffling, and I thought about all the nights I had used that same gesture to win, to dominate, to make someone fold under the weight of my certainty.

She dealt. Two cards each. Her smile stayed fixed, a little too wide at the corners.

"Poker," she said. "Five card draw. Loser takes the night. But we're raising the stakes, Lenka. I'm not going to be satisfied with just wearing you."

I lifted my cards. Pair of eights, nothing else. "What's the real stake, then?"

"The truth." She watched me over the rims of her cards. "Every time I win a hand, you answer one question. Honestly. Fully."

"And if I win a hand?"

"Then I answer one of yours. Same rules." She tapped the ring with her finger. "And the winner of the whole game wears this until the next one."

I nodded. It sounded fair. It sounded like I had a chance. But her thumb kept tracing circles on the ring's band, and there was something in her eyes that made my skin prickle.

"One more thing," she said. "You've never once told me what it felt like to be Marek. Inside you, night after night. Held there, forgotten."

I went still. My cards felt heavy in my hands.

She dealt the draw. "That's your first question. Answer it now, or fold."

Pair of eights. I let the corners bend between my fingers, buying time, and Martina watched me the way a cat watches a mouse decide which hole to run for.

"I fold," I said.

Martina didn't take the pot. She set her cards face down, untouched, and leaned back with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You know the funny thing about that ring, Lenka? Nobody ever asks how it knows what to change a person into."

I went cold. The amber light on the marble pulsed once, patient.

"It doesn't read their shape. It reads their heart. What they fear most, what they want most, what they carry in the dark." She tapped the band with one fingernail. "It's been singing to me all night. Every time you touch your cards, every time you glance at the window, every time you think you've got me."

My mouth was dry. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying I've watched you for three days now through this stone." She tilted her head. "I know the exact second you decide to bluff. I know the breath you take before you lie about Marek. I know that pair of eights in your hand is nothing but tissue paper, because I've felt you want to fold since the deal."

I looked down at my cards. They looked back at me, dumb and ordinary. But my pulse was going like a trapped bird, and I knew she could hear it, because the ring could hear it, and the ring was hers now.

"The first game was over before you sat down," she said, softly. "Every game will be. Until you learn to play with your whole self on the table instead of hiding behind some clever face and a pair of eights."

She reached across and turned my cards over. The eights lay face up on the marble, and beside them she laid her own hand, still facedown, still unopened.

"Pick a side, Lenka." Her smile had teeth in it now. "Answer my question about Marek, fully and honestly, or fold the whole game to me here and now and we skip straight to the part where I wear you again."

The ring hummed. It sounded like her heartbeat. It sounded like mine.

I set the cards down on the marble. "I felt him inside me," I said. "Every time I crossed my legs, every time I laughed, every time I forgot he was there. And that was the worst part. I forgot him. Forgot I was carrying him. He was just weight, just heat, just something I used to make myself feel powerful."

Martina's smile softened, but her eyes stayed sharp. "And you liked it."

"God, yes." The words fell out of me like stones from a split bag. "I loved the feeling of something warm and heavy moving inside me. I loved that I knew a secret no one else knew. I loved that I could put him away and take him out whenever I wanted."

"You hold still," Martina said, and twisted the ring.

The warmth took me, folding me forward, and I felt the world narrow to a long, hard column of polished bone. Ivory, maybe, or pale jade. Silky under her fingers as she picked me up and stroked me along its length.

"I'm going to do something worse than wear you," she said, and slid me inside herself, cold and smooth.

I felt her clench around me for the first time. And she began to ride me, slow and deep, using me for her own pleasure, and I felt every inch of her want, and I had no hands to hold her with.

She lifts her hips, lets me slide almost out, then sinks back down. My whole awareness narrows to that wet heat, that grip, that slow, devastating rhythm. And I understand, at last, what Marek meant. What An felt. What it is to be held and forgotten and wanted all at once.

"Say it," she pants, grinding down on me. "Tell me what you are now."

I have no mouth. But she doesn't need one. She knows. She feels my answer in the way I shift inside her, the way I press up to meet her, the way this polished ivory column has become the only thing that matters.

She laughs, breathless and triumphant. "My favourite toy. That's all you are, Lenka. That's all you've ever been."

She rides me harder, faster, until the world is only the rush of her blood and the clench of her cunt and the cry she lets out when she comes.

Her climax tears through her, and I feel it from the inside out. The clench of her cunt around me, the shudder running up her spine like a current, the way her thighs lock and her whole body goes rigid on top of me. She cries out, a raw, broken sound, and her hips keep moving, grinding down on me even after the waves have started to ebb.

I have no mouth, no tongue, no hands. But I feel every pulse of her, every aftershock rippling through those hot walls, and I know, with a certainty that gutters like a candle flame, that I have never been this close to anyone in my life.

She slumps forward, bracing herself on the marble with both hands. Sweat beads on her forehead and slides down her temple. Her breath comes in ragged gasps, and she stays like that for a long moment, impaled on me, letting the last tremors fade.

Then she lifts her head and looks down at where I enter her. Her smile is slow and cruel and beautiful.

"Still hard," she murmurs. "Still smooth. You just take it, don't you, Lenka? You just lie there and let me wring myself out on you."

She reaches between her legs and wraps her fingers around my base. I feel her hand, hot and slick with her own wetness, sliding along the polished ivory. She draws me out slowly, an inch at a time, and the drag of her inner walls against my length is the most exquisite torture I have ever known. When I slip free entirely, cool air rushes against me, and I feel her pulse through the open air, exposed and swollen.

"The thing is," she says, holding me up to the light, turning me this way and that, "you were always going to end up like this. From the first moment you put that ring on your finger, you were always going to find yourself on the other end of it. You just needed someone patient enough to wait."

She brings me to her mouth. Her lips part, warm and soft, and she kisses the head of me, tongue tracing a slow circle along my curve. I feel it through every grain of the ivory, a shiver that has nowhere to go.

"You taste like me," she says. "That's fitting. That's what you are now. My flesh, polished and shaped to please me."

She slides me into her mouth, all the way down, her throat opening to take my full length. I feel her tongue wrapping around me, the suction of her cheeks, the way her nose presses against the base. She holds me there, deep in her throat, and I feel her pulse through the lining of her esophagus, hot and alive.

When she pulls me out, she's gasping, strands of spit glistening on my length. She laughs, low and delighted.

"I've wanted to do that since the day I met you. You strutting around in your little silk camisoles, turning men into socks and women into necklaces, thinking you were untouchable." She shakes her head. "And here you are. No mouth. No hands. No clever retorts. Just a lovely piece of ivory for me to fuck whenever I feel like it."

She guides me back between her legs, rubbing the head against her slick folds. I feel the heat of her, the swollen lips parting to let me in, and then she sinks down again and takes me all the way in one smooth motion. Her groan is deep and satisfied.

"That's better," she breathes. "That's where you belong."

She starts to ride me again, slow and deliberate. Not the frantic pace of her first orgasm, but something deeper, crueler. Every downward stroke grinds the base of me against her clit. Every upward lift lets me feel the air on my slick length before she takes me back. She watches me, her eyes half lidded, her mouth open, and I understand that she is savouring this, the way I would savour a long meal.

"Tell me something," she says, rolling her hips in a slow circle. "When you wore Marek, in those two years, did you ever once wish it were you? Down there, held inside, forgotten?"

The question hits me like a blade. I have no voice to answer, but she feels me shudder inside her, and she smiles.

"Not a word. I'll take that as a yes."

She speeds up, her thighs beginning to shake. The rhythm changes, becomes harder, more punishing. Each stroke drives me deep, and I feel myself pressing against the far wall of her, a soft resistance that makes her gasp.

"You know what An feels right now?" she pants. "He's watching. He's lying there on the sofa, still human, still naked, after I wore him all night. And he's watching me ride his girlfriend like a common whore's toy, and he can't do a thing about it."

I feel a jolt that isn't pleasure. It's shame, and it burns through the ivory like acid.

"He asked me before you got here, you know. An. He asked me what I was going to do to you. And I told him the truth. I said, I'm going to show her the other side of that ring. I'm going to make her feel what she made me feel, what she made him feel, what she made Marek feel. Every single night of it, compressed into one."

Her hips slap against the marble, wet and loud in the quiet room. She's close again, I can feel it, the tension building in her thighs, the way her breath catches on every downstroke.

"And you know what the worst part is, Lenka?" She leans forward, her breasts brushing the marble as she braces on her forearms, her mouth near the place where I enter her. "You love this. I can feel it in the way you hold your firmness, the way you press up to meet me. You were born to be used. You just never had anyone brave enough to use you properly."

She sits up, throws her head back, and rides me with everything she has. The sound of it fills the room, the slap of skin, the wet squelch of her arousal, the ragged catch of her breath. Her thighs clench, her stomach quivers, and I feel the first wave of her second orgasm building, coiling, preparing to break.

"I'm going to come all over you," she gasps. "I'm going to paint this ivory with my cunt, and then I'm going to put you away, and when I wear you again tomorrow night, I'll use you the same way. Every night. Until you learn."

She comes with a scream, her body arching off the marble, her hips grinding against me in tight, frantic circles. The flood of her heat pours down my length, coating me, dripping onto the marble beneath us. She convulses around me, her inner walls milking me in rhythmic pulses, and I feel myself being gripped, released, gripped again, a living hand closing around my entire being.

She collapses forward, spent, her cheek against the cool stone. Her breath slows. Her hand finds me where I lie between her thighs, still hard, still slick, and she strokes me idly, like a pet.

"Still there," she murmurs. "Good. That's good."

I feel her fingers slide along my length, and she brings me to her lips again, kissing the head of me lightly, almost tenderly.

"You know, I think I'll keep you like this for a while. Not permanently. The ring doesn't do permanent. But a week, maybe. A month. Time enough for you to really understand what it means to be a thing."

She rolls onto her side, still holding me, and her eyes find mine. They are soft now, almost kind, and that is worse than the cruelty.

"But I'll ask you one thing first," she says. "When I turn you back, tomorrow or next week or whenever I decide, I want you to tell me the truth." She strokes me once, slow. "Tell me what you'd rather be: worn by me, or wearing me again."

The ring on her finger pulses once, amber and patient. She tucks me against her chest, warm and close, and closes her eyes.

"You can think about your answer while I sleep."

She was warm and close, her arm curled around me, her breath a soft rhythm against my polished curve. I felt her heartbeat through her ribs, slow and sinking toward sleep, and I knew I had one chance before she slipped under.

I gathered myself. The ivory hummed with the effort of it, the ring felt my want from her finger, and I pushed the shape of a word against the dark.

"Martina."

She stirred. Her fingers tightened around me, half conscious.

"Martina, wake up. I need to tell you."

Her eyes opened, heavy and unfocused. She lifted me to her face, squinting at me in the amber light. "Lenka? You can talk?"

"I can talk when I want to talk." My voice came out thin, scraped through the stone. "I just rarely had anything worth saying before."

She smiled, slow and sleepy, and stroked me along my length. "So that's the trick. All those men you turned into belts and bookends, they just didn't want it enough."

I felt the heat rise through me, shame and something else, something that burned brighter. "I want to answer your question."

She went still. Her fingers stopped moving. "Which question?"

"The one you asked before you said goodnight." I forced the words out, one at a time. "You asked what I'd rather be. Worn by you, or wearing you again."

"I remember."

"I've been lying to myself for two years." The ivory felt cold against her skin, but I pressed closer, seeking her warmth. "I told myself the ring was about power. Control. Proving I was better than everyone who came near me. And it was. Oh, it was."

"But?"

"But I've never felt as close to anyone as I feel right now. Right here. Held against your chest, inside your cunt, carried without having to talk or scheme or perform." My voice shook. "I spent so long thinking I wanted to be the one who wore people. But the truth is, I was empty. I was wearing other people to hide from the fact that nobody had ever held me."

Martina's hand came up, slow, and traced the curve of my head. "And what do you want now, Lenka?"

"I want to be your toy." The words fell out of me, soft and honest, the way confession always is. "I want you to use me whenever you want. I want to be the thing you reach for when you're alone and the thing you have to remember to take out. I want to be held so close that I stop being a person for a while and just be yours."

She was silent for a long moment. Her thumb traced a circle on my polished surface, and I felt her pulse through the touch.

"That's a big thing to admit," she said quietly.

"It's the biggest thing I've ever said."

"Why?"

I thought about Marek. About the way he'd looked at me with those tired eyes and said I was the emptiest person he'd ever been inside. About An, stretched thin and silent in my camisole, every thread a question I never answered. About every person I'd folded into silk and leather and stone, using them to fill a hollow I couldn't name.

"Because I was afraid," I said. "Afraid that if I admitted I wanted to be held, to be wanted, I'd be showing everyone how weak I really am. That the ring was the only thing making me strong, and without it I was just a girl who needed someone to tell her she mattered."

Martina's arms tightened around me. She pressed me against her breast, warm and solid, and I felt her heart beating through the weight of her.

"You matter," she said. "You've always mattered. You just made it impossible for anyone to tell you."

I said nothing. There was nothing left to say.

She held me for a long time, her breath slowing, her fingers stroking me idly. The amber light pulsed on her finger, patient and warm. And for the first time in longer than I could remember, I felt something that wasn't hunger or fear or the itch to control.

I felt safe.

Sleep came in waves, slow and warm, and I let myself drift in it, held against her heartbeat. I had no idea how long I lay there, just feeling the soft rhythm of her breath, the weight of her arm across my polished curve. It was enough.

Sometime later, a sound woke me. A soft roll, metal on stone, a small clink that ended in silence.

I felt it before I understood it. The ivory surged, dissolved, and my own flesh flooded back over me in a single cold rush. I was human again, naked, sprawled halfway across her, my face pressed to her collarbone. The air bit at my skin. And on the marble floor, three feet from the bed, the ring lay glinting in the amber light.

It had slipped off her finger. She must have shifted in her sleep, curled away from me, and the band had loosened.

She kept sleeping, deep and even, one arm flung out across the mattress where I'd been. Her hand was empty. The gold tract on the floor was empty too, waiting.

I pushed myself up slowly, careful not to wake her, and swung my legs off the bed. My knees gave a little as I stood. The cold of the marble bit into my bare feet. I crossed to the ring and picked it up.

It was warm from her skin. Still warm. The amber light pulsed against my palm, steady and patient, the way it always had when it had been mine.

My whole hand was shaking.

I could put it on. One slide, one twist, and everything she had done to me would come undone, and more. I could turn her into a silk scarf, a heel, a cellphone case, anything small and silent that I could carry in my pocket while I thought about what to do with her. The hunger surged up in me like bile, old and familiar. I could make her pay for every night, every mile she'd made me travel without a voice, every time she'd taken me out and used me and put me away.

I slipped the band to the edge of my own finger.

The old Lenka would have done it. She would have twisted it without a breath of hesitation, watching Martina's sleeping form fold into velvet or leather, and she would have smiled the whole time. That Lenka had won every game she'd ever played, because she'd never played for anything except getting the ring back.

I looked at Martina. She had turned in her sleep, and the soft light fell across her face. Her mouth was slightly open, her lashes dark against her cheek. She looked younger than the woman who'd ridden me into the marble and called me a toy. She looked tired. She looked like someone who'd spent a long time longing for something she couldn't name.

And I heard my own voice, the words I'd scraped out through the stone. I want to be held so close that I stop being a person for a while and just be yours.

I pulled the ring off my finger.

It slid off easily, like water. I stood there a moment, naked, cold, holding the warm gold in my palm. The hunger was still there, gnawing at the edge of my mind, whispering all the things I could do. But underneath it was something quieter and much harder to face.

I had meant every word I said.

I walked back to the bed and knelt beside her. Her hand lay palm up on the mattress, open and empty. I took the ring, pressed the band to the tip of her index finger, and slid it gently to the base. She stirred in her sleep, a small breath, a soft murmur, but she didn't wake.

Then I lay back down beside her, pulled her arm across me, and pressed my face to her warmth.

She shifted automatically, curling around me, her breath hot against my hair. Her heart beat slow and steady under my cheek, and the ring on her finger pulsed amber in the dark, warm and close, like a second heartbeat.

I closed my eyes. In the morning, she would wake and find the ring still on her finger, and me human and naked in her arms for the first time since this all began. She would see what I had done, what I had chosen. And I had no plan, no clever line, no version of events where I came out ahead.

For once, that was the point.

I slept, and I let myself be held.

I slept, and I let myself be held.

The warmth of her curled around me like a second skin, her breath slow and deep against my hair. I drifted in that soft place between waking and dreaming, the way you do when you've finally stopped running. Her arm lay heavy across my ribs, her thigh hooked over mine, and I felt the slow pulse of her heart through the wall of her chest.

Then the light changed.

It came through my closed eyelids, a warm gold bloom that deepened and spread like honey poured into water. I blinked, groggy, and lifted my head. The room was lit with it, the amber glow spilling across the sheets, across her skin, pooling in the hollows of her collarbone. The ring on her finger blazed, brighter than I had ever seen it, brighter than the steady pulse it had kept all night.

Martina stirred. Her fingers curled, her breath caught, and her eyes opened, unfocused and heavy with sleep. She looked at me, then down at her hand, and the glow filled her face, making her irises look like molten gold.

"What," she said. Not a question. A statement of wonder.

The ring flared again, a pulse that shook the air, and I felt the vibration through the mattress, through my bones. The hum was different this time. It wasn't the familiar thrum of a transformation. It was deeper, almost musical, a chord struck and held.

Martina sat up. The sheets pooled at her waist, and she held her hand out in front of her like it belonged to someone else. The gold light blazed so bright it threw shadows across the room.

"It's singing," she said.

I pushed myself up on my elbows. "What does it want?"

She shook her head slowly, watching the light shift and coil like smoke trapped in glass. "Not what. Who."

The ring turned on her finger on its own, the band rotating slowly, the stone catching the light and throwing it across the ceiling in a slow arc. The hum deepened, and I felt it in my teeth.

Then she looked at me, and her face was strange, open and raw in a way I had never seen.

"It's asking for you," she said.

The ring pulsed, timed to my heartbeat. I felt it, a pull like a thread tied to my sternum, tugging soft and insistent. I reached out without thinking, and Martina did not pull her hand away. My fingers brushed the band, and the light leaped, wrapping around my wrist like a coil of warm silk.

The air thickened. My breath came shallow. I felt the familiar folding sensation begin, the world narrowing, the pressure of transformation gathering at the base of my spine.

"Wait," I said. "I didn't twist it."

Martina's eyes were wide, her pupils huge in the gold light. "Neither did I."

The ring turned again, the stone now facing me directly, and the light poured into my chest. The folding sensation stopped. Instead it spread, a warmth that filled me from the inside out, not changing my shape but changing something else. Something I hadn't known was hollow until it began to fill.

I heard a sound. It took me a moment to recognise it. It was the ring, and it was humming a melody, a simple three-note phrase, rising and falling like a question.

Martina's lips moved, shaping the words without sound. I read them, or maybe I felt them, the way the ring's light felt like a hand pressed to my heart.

"It's asking if you want to stay."

The melody repeated, patient, waiting. The gold light pooled between us, bright and warm and alive. I looked at Martina's face, at the wonder in her eyes, the way she held her breath like she was afraid the moment would shatter.

I thought about the ring on my own finger all those years. The way I had used it to trap people in silk and stone, to make them hold me, to make them carry me, to make them feel as empty as I did. I thought about Marek's tired eyes. An's stretched silence. Every secret I had hidden inside a clever mouth.

And I thought about the thing I had said through the ivory, the true thing I had never told anyone. I want to be held so close that I stop being a person for a while and just be yours.

The ring pulsed, brighter.

I took Martina's hand in both of mine and pressed it against my chest, over my heart.

"Yes," I said. "I want to stay."

The light flared, a single white-gold bloom that filled the entire room, so bright I saw the bones of my own hands through my eyelids. The hum climbed, higher and higher, and then broke into a chord that felt like a door opening in my chest.

And when the light faded, the ring was still on her finger, burning steady and warm. But I felt it now, a thread running from the gold through her skin and into me, a pulse that matched my heartbeat with hers.

Martina looked down at our hands, then at me. Her smile was slow and real, the first one I had seen that wasn't sharpened to a blade.

"It's not a loan anymore," she said softly. "It's a tether. The ring has bound itself to us both. To you, through me."

I looked at the gold on her finger, at the light that pulsed there like a second heart. "What does that mean?"

"It means you can't take it off me. And I can't give it away. Not to anyone else. Not ever." She stroked my knuckles with her thumb. "It's ours now. Both of ours. One ring, two souls, bound together by choice."

The warmth spread through my chest, settling deep, and the hollow I had carried for so long felt less like a wound and more like a room with the lights finally on. I lifted her hand and pressed my lips to the ring, feeling its heat against my mouth.

"And the game?" I asked.

She laughed, low and warm. "The game's over, Lenka. You won. Not by getting the ring back. By giving it away."

The warmth faded slowly, leaving the room in its dim amber glow. I felt the thread between us, humming under my skin like a second pulse, and for a moment I forgot there was anyone else in the world.

Then I heard him breathe.

An stood in the doorway, one hand braced against the frame. He was naked still, his chest rising and falling in shallow, measured breaths, his eyes fixed on us. On the ring. On my hand wrapped around Martina's. I couldn't read his face. He had worn my camisole, my tanga, a whole night of being stretched thin against her skin, and he had come out quiet. But this silence was different. It had weight.

"An," I said.

He didn't move. His gaze went from the ring to my face, and I felt the thread in my chest pull taut, as if the tether could sense his watching.

Martina didn't let go of my hand. She turned her head to him, slow, unhurried, like a woman who had all the time in the world. "You felt it, didn't you? The change."

An nodded. His voice came out rough, scraped. "I felt something. Like the floor tilted under me."

"It's bound," Martina said. "The ring and Lenka and me. One thread, three ends. You're looking at the knot."

He took a step into the room. His bare feet made no sound on the marble. He stopped at the foot of the bed, close enough that I could see the tremor in his jaw.

"And where does that leave me?" he asked. Not accusatory. Just quiet, like a man asking for directions.

The question hit me harder than I expected. I had spent the night being a toy, being held, being seen. I had made my confession through the ivory. But I hadn't thought about An. Not once. He was just there, a presence at the edge of the story, someone to be worn and forgotten.

Martina released my hand and sat up slowly, the sheets falling to her waist. She looked at him with something like patience, but there was an edge to it, a blade wrapped in velvet.

"I thought you might ask that," she said. "Come here."

He hesitated. Then he crossed the space between them and stood at the edge of the bed, looking down at us both. I could see the flush on his skin, the way his cock had begun to stir. He couldn't hide it. He didn't try.

Martina reached out and took his wrist. She turned his hand over, palm up, and pressed her ringed finger to the centre of it. I felt the thread in my chest jump, and An gasped.

"There," she said softly. "Now you feel it too."

He stared at his palm, at the faint amber glow spreading from the point of contact. "What did you do to me?"

"Nothing permanent. Just a taste." She withdrew her hand, and the glow faded. "That's what it is to be bound. To feel her heartbeat alongside your own. To know she's yours and you're hers and no amount of clever words can undo it."

An looked from the ring to my face. His expression had shifted, the confusion giving way to something rawer. "Lenka. Do you want this?"

I opened my mouth. The old answer came automatically, the sharp deflection, the joke that would put distance between us. I caught it before it left my lungs.

"Yes," I said. "I want this."

He let out a breath, long and shaky. He sat down on the edge of the bed, close enough that I could feel the warmth of his thigh against mine. The thread in my chest hummed, and I realised it was reaching for him too, stretching like a vine toward the light.

Martina watched us both, her eyes moving between our faces. She had a thin smile on her lips, but there was no cruelty in it. Just curiosity, hunger, the pleasure of watching something unfold that she had planned and guessed at.

"Then I have one question," she said. She turned to An. "You've spent a year being her camisole. Her tanga. Whatever she felt like wrapping you in. You've felt her walk, her breathe, her press against her own skin. You know what she hides better than she does." She tilted her head. "Do you want to keep watching her, or do you want to be inside this too?"

An's jaw worked. He looked at me, and I saw the years in his eyes, the patience, the silence he'd carried. I saw the moment he decided.

"I want to be inside it," he said.

Martina's smile widened. She twisted the ring, and the gold light flared, wrapping around An's body in a graceful coil. I felt the thread in my chest lurch, and then it was there, a new pulse, warm and full, connecting me to both of them.

An didn't fold into fabric. He stayed human, but I felt him change, something deep and invisible clicking into place. He gasped, head falling back, and when he looked at me again his eyes were wet.

"I can feel you," he whispered. "Both of you. It's like being held from the inside."

I reached for him. He took my hand, and Martina took his, and the ring burned warm and steady on her finger. Three hands, one ring, a golden thread running through all of us.

An laughed, a broken sound, half wonder and half relief. "What do we do now?"

Martina looked at me, and I at her. The old hunger stirred in me, the itch to control, to win, to make someone bend. But it was smaller now, like a shout heard through a wall.

"I think," I said slowly, "we stop hiding."

An let out the breath he'd been holding. Martina leaned in and kissed my forehead, and then his, a light press of lips that felt like a seal.

The ring pulsed, once, warm and patient. Outside, the city glowed through the glass walls, and for the first time in years, I didn't want to be anywhere else.
