Chapter 5: Resolution
Robert and James sat together on a bench in the gym, their heavy muscles gleaming with sweat in the soft glow of the overhead lights. Robert's blue eyes were troubled as he stared out at the roomful of hard-bodied men, his thoughts consumed by the mire of emotions he was experiencing.
"What's going on in that head of yours, buddy?" James asked, his voice steady and calm. He placed a comforting hand on Robert's broad shoulder, his fingers gentle on the warm skin.
"Listen to me, Rob," he said, his voice steady but firm, "you can't keep walking down this dead-end street with Tom.
He leads you nowhere but misery. You deserve better than that."
Robert sighed, the weariness evident in his voice.
"I know, Rob, but it's not that easy," he said, shaking his head.
"Tom and I have a history, one that runs deeper than the simple connection of friendship.
I can't ignore that."
James let out a frustrated sigh.
"You're right, Rob, you do have a history with Tom, but that doesn't mean you need to keep clinging to it. You deserve someone who's going to treat you right, not someone who's going to keep hurting you over and over again."
Rob turned to face James, his intense blue eyes boring into james. "I know that, but I can't just turn my feelings off like a switch. It's not that easy for me."
James gave Rob a compassionate nod.
"I hear you, buddy. I know it's not easy." He paused for a moment, trying to find the right words. "Look, I've seen the way you are with Tom, and I understand the hold he has over you. But you can't let that hold you prisoner.
You deserve happiness, more than anyone I know. You work hard for it, and you deserve to find it. So, I'm telling you, take a chance."
Robert's gaze shifted to the floor, and he opened his mouth to reply but closed it again, swallowed hard.
"I offered you a solution a few months back Rob. Consider an open relationship like I told you. Tell everyone including me, you would like to explore outside of traditional perceptions of what people should be to each other. Admit to yourself you want to be loved. Do this one thing just for you. Do it so you can experience the spectrum of your love and sexuality." James' words cut through Robert's thoughts, and he finally looked up at his friend with determination burning in his eyes.
"I know what I have to do," Robert said resolutely. "I'm going to take a chance on myself."
James gave him an encouraging nod. "Good for you, buddy. It's about time."
Robert patted James' shoulder and rose from the bench, feeling a renewed sense of purpose.
"Thanks for being there for me, James. I don't know where I'd be without you."
James grinned. "That's what friends are for, buddy."
"And remember I have a stake on your ass this evening, really hard and tick stake." James said while grabbing his fat prick in his pants
.
Robert laughed and gave him a gentle shove, feeling the exhaustion starting to creep in. "Save it for later. I need to sort things out with Tom first."
He left James in the gym that evening, feeling lighter than he had in months. Despite everything, he was now more determined than ever to take control of his life and his heart.
As he made his way to Tom's apartment, Robert couldn't help but go over their short but fiery conversation in his head. Tom had been honest and raw, admitting he never stopped loving him.
For the first time in years, Robert allowed himself to hope that maybe, just maybe, there was a future for them. But there was still Adam. The handsome police chief with the muscles and the twinkling brown eyes had been making playful overtures for weeks now, and despite himself, Robert found himself drawn to him. He couldn't deny the spark between them, the way Adam seemed to understand him, to see him for who he truly was.
The thought of an open relationship with Tom while maintaining his covert arrangement with Adam was tempting.
But he knew it was a slippery slope to disaster, and he had to be realistic about his own limits.
Robert clenched his fists, conflicted by the impossible crossroads he now faced.
Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by the shrill sound of his cellphone piercing the stillness of the night.
He glanced at the screen and saw a message from Adam: "Are you working out alone? Want some company?"
His heart rate quickened, a surge of excitement rushing through him at the prospect of having Adam there with him.
Robert grasped his cellphone, his fingers trembling with anticipation as he typed out a quick message "Yeah sure, come over. Bring those flexin' muscles with you."
He hit send, his message appearing almost instantly on the screen, "Too late Cowboy, I am already here. Look in the mirror, youre the one I came to workout with."
Robert sighed, his self-consciousness flaring.
"Looking good, Robert " Adam said, sauntering over to the mirror and examining himself, a satisfied smile curling his lips.
Robert couldn't help but smile himself. He was glad for Adam's company. He was beautiful, sure, but it didn't hurt that he also had a great sense of humor and was always down for a good workout.
"Thanks," Robert chuckled, wiping the sweat from his brow as he watched Adam in the mirror. "I try."
Adam's eyes met his in the mirror, and Robert felt a strange jolt in his chest, like a bolt of electricity. Adam raised an eyebrow at him, and Robert realized he'd been staring.
"Like what you see?" Adam's eyes twinkled with amusement.
Robert felt his cheeks flush, but he didn't look away. "Yeah, I do," he said, his voice thick with desire.
Adam took a step closer, their bodies almost touching. "Well, that's good to hear," he murmured, his breath hot against Robert's ear.
Robert closed his eyes, his breath hitching as Adam's hands traced a path down his chest, his fingers lingering on the waistband of his shorts.
The room was quiet except for their heavy breathing and the beating of their hearts. Robert felt his resolve weakening, his body screaming for release.
"Adam," he whispered, his voice shaking. "What are we doing?"
Adam leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Robert's neck. "Whatever we want," he murmured, his lips curling into a smirk.
Robert felt a shiver run down his spine, a mixture of fear and excitement coursing through him.
He was on dangerous territory, gambling with his own heart and the fragile relationships that he had built around him.
"Adam," he repeated, his voice a low growl as he tried to regain control of the situation. "I can't do this." He pulled away from Adam's grasp, turning to face him.
"Look Adam I want you so bad, but I must lay my cards on the table. You are not the only one I'm seeing and I'm at a point in my life where I would like to consider an open relationship with the three of you. The reason I'm telling you this is because you told me in the beginning you wanted something unconventional. And since we met I have learned to crave your attention and company. I respect you and don't want secrets and least of all I want to hurt you." Robert confessed.
Adam listened intently, his gaze never leaving Robert's feverish face. "An open relationship?" he asked, his curiosity piqued. "That's a first for me, but if you want to give it a go with me, Tom and James, I'm willing to try." he grinned, a trace of steeliness in his voice.
Robert felt his heart skip a beat. He wasn't expecting Adam's immediate agreement. "Really?" he asked, his voice hoarse with emotion.
"Why not?
I'm certainly not one to shy away from new experiences." Adam's gaze remained steady, a hint of curiosity in his deep brown eyes.
Robert took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. "Alright then," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll consider it."
Adam grinned, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. "Good," he said, stepping closer to Robert once more.
"I'm glad you're willing to take a chance.
But remember, I'm not going to tolerate any deceit or dishonesty. I want us to be open with each other, to truly trust and understand each other's needs."
Robert felt a pang of guilt, knowing that he had been dishonest with Adam up until now. But he also understood that this arrangement was what he wanted, that it was what he needed, to truly explore his desires and to find a sense of balance within himself.
"I understand," he replied.
"No more secrets, no more lies. I want to be genuine with you and the others."
Adam's lips spread into a lopsided smile, and he nodded. "I'm glad we can be on the same page. Now, shall we continue with our workout?"
Robert nodded, his nerves calming down a bit as he focused on his workout routine. However, his thoughts couldn't help but drift off to Tom, his high school best friend with unresolved feelings. He wondered if an open relationship with Tom would even be possible, given the emotional history between them.
But he knew there was only one way to find out.
He exchanged a few more words with Adam before parting ways, the tension between them palpable, charged with the weight of their unspoken desires and uncertainties.
Robert's heart raced as he made his way to Tom's apartment, unsure of what awaited him there.
He had barely knocked when the door swung open, revealing Tom in all his muscular glory.
Robert's breath caught in his throat, the sheer force of Tom's presence overwhelming him.
He realized in that moment just how much he had missed him, the way his eyes lit up with mischief and the easy way he moved.
"Hey," Tom said, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I wasn't expecting you tonight."
Robert's mind raced as he searched for the right words to say, trying to calm the tempest of emotions roiling inside him. "I know," he finally said. "But I needed to see you."
Tom's smile grew wider, a look of relief washing over his face.
"Come in," he said, stepping aside to let Robert pass.
Their eyes met for a brief moment, a spark of understanding passing between them.
Robert's heart raced as he stepped into Tom's apartment, the familiar scent of his cologne triggering a flood of memories.
He turned to face Tom, their gazes locked in a silent standoff. "I need to talk to you," Robert said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Tom nodded, a look of solemnity settling over his features.
"I'll make some coffee," he said, disappearing into the kitchen.
Robert followed him, feeling the tension in his chest ease slightly. He leaned against the counter, watching as Tom filled the coffee maker with water and ground coffee beans.
"Tom," Robert said, his voice low and serious. "We need to talk."
Tom turned to face him, his deep brown eyes meeting Robert's determined gaze. "I know," he replied, his voice filled with a edgy concern.
"What is it? You seem off."
Robert took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts.
"It's about us," he said, his eyes filled with a serious determination. "And where we stand."
Tom's expression softened, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
"I think I know where this is going," he said, turning away from Robert.
"But before you say anything, let me just say this. I still love you, Robert."
Robert felt his heart clench, a mix of emotions flooding his chest.
"I know you do, Tom," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "And I never stopped loving you either."
Tom turned back to face him, his eyes wide with surprise. "What are you saying, Robert?"
"I'm saying that I want to try again," Robert said, taking a step closer to Tom. "I want to take a chance on us, and see where it leads."
Tom's face broke out into a wide grin, the first genuine smile Robert had seen on him in years. he asked, his voice filled with hope and excitement.
Robert felt his chest constrict as he looked into Tom's eyes, knowing that this was the moment of truth.
"I'm sayin' that I want to give us another shot, Tom" Robert declared, taking a deep breath. "I want to explore that history between us, and see if we can build something more, if we can take our friendship to the next level."
"But with a caveat Tom, I want it to be an open relationship." He heard Tom gasp, his eyes widening in shock, but Robert pressed on. "I know it's unfair, Tom, but that's how I feel now. I need to explore my desires and to find a sense of balance within myself. Without being too hard on you, I want to enjoy the benefits of an open relationship with both of you. I'm not looking to hurt you or betray you, but I need this for myself."
After a second thought, Tom realized that meant he could also have a relationship with his wife. Things could be good for once , he thought, a warmth spreading through his chest.
"So I can have an open relationship with you too. It goes both ways, Rob, right?"
Tom's voice was barely audible, his mind reeling with the implications of Robert's words.
Robert looked into his eyes, and he nodded, his throat tightening with emotion. "Yes, Tom. That's what I want."
Tom took a deep breath, his gaze steady. "Okay, Rob. I understand."
"I thought you would, Tom," Robert replied, his voice cracking with the enormity of what he was asking. "After all, we've known each other for so long.
And I do still love you, Robert. I always have."
It was the truth, and they both knew it. Tom's eyes softened as he looked at Robert, the intensity of their shared history weighing heavy on the air between them.
Robert felt his chest tighten at Tom's words. The gravity of their situation was sinking in, the enormity of what they were proposing threatening to consume him. He wanted this to work, he did. But he knew that it wouldn't be easy.
Robert would have to confront some uncomfortable truths and navigate a minefield of emotions if he was to make this relationship work.
Over the coming days and weeks, Robert found himself spending more time with Tom, both at the gym and at Tom's apartment. He was careful to balance his time with Tom and Adam, always making sure to communicate with both of them about his plans and his feelings.
At first, it felt like he was living a double life, constantly juggling his commitments to Tom and Adam while trying to keep the peace between them.
He asked each guy if he wanted to meet the other and they finally met at the gym.
The tension between them was palpable, but somehow, they managed to keep it together, the curiosity and excitement overriding the awkwardness. James, being the more outgoing of the two, took the lead, inviting them both to his penthouse for a drink. Robert was hesitant at first, but eventually agreed, his curiosity getting the better of him.
Adam arrived first, a bottle of single malt in hand. He was dressed in a fitted black shirt that clung to his muscular arms, the veins bulging with each flex.
His eyes were intense, burning holes through Robert as he stood in front of him, a smirk teasing the corner of his lips.
Robert hesitated, his heart racing. He knew he had much to lose and the stakes were high for him, but he couldn't ignore the fire that ignited in his loins whenever Adam was near.
Adam's eyes tracked down to Robert's lips, and he leaned in, his mouth meeting Robert's in a fierce kiss. Robert wrapped his arms around Adam's neck, feeling the heat of Adam's body against his own.
The kiss was hungry and intense, their teeth grinding together as they struggled to deepen it. Robert's heart raced, the thought of Tom and James watching them stirring a primal need inside him.
Adam's hands roamed down Robert's back, leaving a trail of fire in their wake. He could feel Adam's erection pressing against him, hard and insistent.
As suddenly as it started, the kiss ended, leaving them both gasping for breath. Adam's eyes glinted with lust as he looked at Robert.
"Welcome back," he said, his voice low and sultry.
James, who had been watching from the corner of the room, sauntered over to join them.
"I see you boys hit it off," he chuckled, a wry grin on his face.
Robert felt a blush creeping up his cheeks. "Yeah, something like that," he mumbled, trying to gather his thoughts.
Tom cleared his throat, drawing their attention. "Well, this is all a bit unexpected," he said, his eyes flicking between James and Adam.
James shrugged.
"It's evident you both are smart enough to establish boundaries and take care of yourselves and one another," he said. "Now, what you do with it, that's up to you."
Tom took a deep breath; the evening was eastward moving into the night, the neon lights filtering in throbbing beams from the streets outside. Robert and Adam tagged along behind him, each lost in their thoughts.
As they stepped into the dimly lit interior of the bar, Robert felt a pang of trepidation.
He had never been one to indulge in such public displays of affection, and the thought of being seen with two men, let alone in a romantic relationship with them, sent a shiver down his spine.
But as he glanced over at Tom and Adam, their faces illuminated by the flickering neon lights, he felt his anxiety dissipate. There was a look in their eyes - a look of confidence and strength - that gave him the courage to face whatever came their way.
James ever the hedonist suggested a wild foursome to the guys which was immediately rejected by Robert as he needed to set some limits and rules with these men they had so impulsively invited into his life.
The night wore on, and the four of them stayed intertwined and connected in conversation and laughter.
Robert couldn't help but feel a warm sense of belonging.
His past frustrations and loneliness were forgotten as he reveled in the camaraderie of his new makeshift family, the three men who had somehow become his partners in this journey into newfound love and companionship.
