Chapter 7: B Story
She was angry, her glare searing through Tom's soul. The tension between them seemed to thicken, like a heavy fog settling upon the room.
"I can't believe you, Tom. I've been married to you for years, given you my body, my time, my everything, and what do I get in return? A slutty night with some pimp-boy toy?" Emily sneered.
Tom hung his head in shame, guilt etching lines across his forehead. He looked at Robert, pleading for forgiveness.
Robert remained silent, his face a blank slate. Tom felt a chill run down his spine, and he wondered if he'd made the biggest mistake of his life by leaving Emily.
"I can't believe you, Tom." Emily spat out viciously. "Why did you even marry me if you were just going to fuck around behind my back?"
Tom couldn't bear her angry gaze anymore. He got up and walked towards Robert, standing awkwardly next to him. Emily looked at them both and snorted derisively.
"I knew it," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "I knew your friendship was never just platonic. You two have always had something going on behind closed doors."
Robert stared at Emily, a mixture of shock and anger clouding his features. "Our friendship is none of your concern."
Tom stepped in, trying to defuse the situation. "Hey, babe, it's not what it looks like," he said, reaching out to take Emily's arm.
But she pulled away from him, her eyes flashing dangerously.
"Don't call me that," she hissed. "You don't have the right to call me that anymore."
Tom recoiled as if she had slapped him. He knew he had hurt her deeply, but hearing her say the words out loud was like a knife in his chest. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I never meant for things to turn out this way."
"Well, they did," Emily said with a shrug.
"You fucking newer did anything right. Total looser, when I whored you out you didn't even protest. Pathetic. " That's all you think I am, isn't it?"
Eyes flashing with anger, Tom stood toe-to-toe with Emily, both of them breathing heavily from the tense standoff. His throat felt dry and half-choked from the sudden surge of emotion.
"You don't know me," he finally mustered, his voice hoarse. "And you certainly don't know the secrets we've kept hidden behind your back."
Emily arched an eyebrow at him, her expression dismissive.
"I don't need to.
I've seen you with him, Tom. And let me tell you, if that's not the definition of fucking pathetic, then I don't know what is." Emily sneered, her eyes narrowing as she took in Tom's defiant stance.
Tom grunted, his chest heaving with every strained breath. He looked down at Robert, whose posture remained rigid and unwavering. He felt a strange sort of kinship with the other man, a sense of understanding that transcended friendship. They shared a secret, one that Emily would never understand.
And now what? you know what will happen I will make you pay, with the divorce I will milk you dry for every penny I could still squeeze out of you. God knows I will need the money since my cash cow is barren apparently.
She continued to rant and rave, complaining about the lavish lifestyle she wouldn't be able to afford once they divorced.
Tom couldn't take it anymore. He had to leave, he couldn't stand being in the same room as her any longer. He grabbed his coat from the back of the sofa, and made his way towards the door.
Emily followed him, her words stinging like a thousand needles pricking his skin. "You'll regret this, Tom. I promise you that." She said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Tom paused with his hand on the doorknob, turning to look at her one last time.
"I'm sorry, Emily," he said, his voice laden with sadness and guilt. "I never meant to hurt you. But I can't keep living a lie. I have to be true to myself."
With that, he turned and walked out the door, closing it softly behind him.
As Tom descended the staircase of an apartment building, he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over him.
He had left Emily, the weight of his guilt and shame finally lifted off his shoulders. He took a deep breath of the cold winter air, feeling the chill penetrate his lungs and awaken his senses.
He heard the door behind him creak open, and he turned to see Robert standing in the doorway, a concerned expression on his face. Tom felt his heart flutter in his chest at the sight of him.
"Are you okay?" Robert asked, stepping towards him.
Tom nodded weakly, feeling his eyes well up with tears.
He didn't want to cry in front of Robert, but the weight of what had just happened was too much to bear.
Robert stepped closer to Tom, wrapping his arms around him in a tight embrace. Tom melted into the hug, grateful for the warmth and comfort that Robert offered him.
"It's okay," Robert whispered in his ear. "You don't have to hold it all in. Let it out."
Tom took a deep breath and let the tears flow freely down his cheeks.
Robert held him tighter as Tom finally released the pent-up emotions that he had been holding onto for years. It was a release of tension and anxiety he had done his best to suppress, for the sake of his marriage and the feelings of his high school sweetheart, Emily.
But as he let go and embraced the sensation, Tom felt a sense of weightlessness, like a boulder had been lifted from his shoulders. He was free to feel what he truly felt: relief, guilt, shame, love, and guilt again.
Tom repeated every venomous word she said to Robert. It seems he could breathe till now
Robert finally kissed him with the depth of his soul. Tom locked him into an embrace never prepared to let go .
The fog of guilt and shame that had clouded Tom's mind for years finally started to clear. He realized that he had allowed Emily to control his happiness for far too long, and that he had let his guilt over his unrequited feelings for Robert consume him.
Robert's embrace was a sanctuary, a place where Tom could be himself without fear of judgment or rejection. It was a place where he felt truly seen and understood, a place where he felt truly happy.
He pulled back gently to look at Robert, the streetlights illuminating the softness of his features.
He reached up and caressed Robert's forehead, smoothing back his sweaty hair. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you like you were there for me tonight," Tom said, his voice laden with guilt.
Robert shook his head, his eyes filled with empathy. "Don't apologize, Tom. You did what you needed to do for yourself. I'm just happy you found the courage to be true to yourself and to me."
Tom smiled weakly, a sense of relief washing over him. "Thanks, Robert.
