Chapter 2: The Hollow Aftermath
The scent of Richard’s cologne still clung to her skin, a ghost beneath the steam of the shower she’d taken the moment she got home. She’d scrubbed until her flesh was pink, but the deeper marks remained—the faint, crescent-shaped bruises his grip had left on her hips, the tender ache inside her, a raw reminder of his massive, intrusive possession. It pulsed within her, a secret rhythm under her husband’s gentle hands.
Charly’s kiss was soft, inquiring. His lips tasted of the mint tea he’d been drinking. He cupped her face, his thumb stroking her cheek. “Long meeting,” he murmured, pulling back to search her eyes. “You must be wiped out.”
Sara forced a smile, her fingers tightening in the cotton sheets. “The Parker account. It’s demanding.”
“My brilliant wife,” he said, warmth in his voice. He believed her. He always believed her. His kindness was a blanket she sometimes wanted to smother in. He nuzzled her neck, his breath warm against her damp skin. “I missed you today.”
His touch was light, loving. It traced the line of her shoulder, dipped to the collar of her sleep shirt. It felt like being handled with tissue paper. After the deliberate, calculated pressure of Richard’s hands, Charly’s caress registered as a faint, almost irritating static. Her body, still humming from the earlier violence, screamed for a different language.
She turned her head, capturing his mouth in a kiss that was more urgent than she intended. She needed to override her own thoughts, to lose the comparison in sensation. She pushed her tongue past his lips, a mimicry of aggression she’d learned elsewhere.
Charly responded with surprised enthusiasm, rolling to cover her, his weight familiar and comforting. Too comforting. He was careful, always so careful, to support himself on his elbows. Richard never was. Richard used his weight to pin, to subdue.
“I want you,” Sara whispered, and it was true, but not for him. She wanted the obliteration that followed the taking. She arched her back, grinding herself against him, seeking friction for the ache he hadn’t created.
He undressed her with a reverence that felt like a parody. Each button of her pajamas was a tiny ceremony. Richard’s ties were ceremonies of a different kind. When she was bare, Charly just looked at her for a moment, his expression full of a love so plain it was painful. “God, you’re beautiful,” he breathed.
He kissed her stomach, his tongue circling her navel. He moved down, his intention clear. He loved to go down on her. It was an act of service he delighted in.
Panic, sharp and sour, rose in her throat. She couldn’t bear his mouth there, not with the evidence of another man so recent, so visceral. The intimacy of it would be a lie too profound.
“No,” she said, too sharply. She softened it with a hand in his hair, guiding him back up. “Just… I need you inside me. Now.”
He blinked, a little surprised, but nodded, smiling. “Okay. Whatever you need.”
He fumbled for a condom in the nightstand. The rustle of foil was another offense. Richard never used them. He claimed what was his, directly, leaving his mark deep inside her. The latex was a barrier, a sanitization of the act. She turned her face into the pillow as Charly sheathed himself.
When he entered her, it was with a slow, gradual push. He was murmuring sweet things, how good she felt, how tight, how much he loved her. His eyes were closed in pleasure.
Sara closed hers too. She felt the stretch, but it was a shadow of the brutal, burning fullness she’d endured hours before. This was comfortable. Pleasant. It was fucking nothing. A sound of frustration escaped her—a choked gasp he mistook for passion.
“That’s it, baby,” he encouraged, his pace building.
She wrapped her legs around his waist, trying to pull him deeper, trying to find an edge. She matched his rhythm, a practiced performance. In her mind, she was elsewhere. The plush rug. The firelight. The cold, appraising blue eyes watching her break. The sting of the crop. The degrading, thrilling commands. The helpless, bottomless need.
Her own arousal, when it came, was a phantom limb sensation, disconnected from the man moving inside her. It was fueled by memory and shame. She pictured Richard’s voice, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to bruise, his relentless, punishing thrusts that drove the breath from her lungs and every thought from her head.
“Fuck,” she moaned into the pillow, and the obscenity sounded alien in their gentle bedroom.
Charly’s movements became jerky, his breath hot and ragged in her ear. “Sara… I’m gonna…”
She clenched around him, a final, desperate attempt to feel something real. “Come on,” she hissed, her voice low and strange. “Do it. Come inside me.”
The permission, phrased like that, tipped him over. He cried out, a soft, grateful sound, and she felt the muted throb of him through the latex.
He collapsed beside her, spent, pulling her close. He kissed her sweaty temple. “Wow,” he panted. “That was… you were incredible. So intense tonight.”
She lay still, waiting for her heartbeat to slow. The throbbing inside her was now a confused mix of his gentle afterglow and the lingering, deeper ache from Richard. The hollow feeling expanded, filling her chest.
Charly traced idle patterns on her arm. The silence was comfortable for him. For her, it was a vacuum where the screaming contradictions multiplied.
After a long while, his voice drowsy, he spoke into the dark. “You know… sometimes, at work, I think about you.”
“Mmm?”
“Yeah. I think about you… not with me.” He chuckled, a little nervous. “It’s stupid. A fantasy.”
Sara froze. Her blood seemed to stop moving in her veins. “What do you mean?”
“Just… a powerful guy. Someone important. Seeing you. Wanting you.” His voice was a sleepy murmur, confessing a secret to the darkness. “I think about him watching you. Or… or even being with you. And me, just… knowing. Seeing how beautiful you are through his eyes.”
The air left the room. Sara stared at the ceiling, the faint light from the streetlamp outside painting shifting bars across it. Her husband’s secret fantasy, whispered in post-coital intimacy, was a funhouse mirror reflection of her secret reality. The coincidence was so grotesque it felt like a physical blow.
She said nothing. She couldn’t.
Charly took her silence for sleep, or perhaps for disapproval. He squeezed her. “Just a silly thought,” he whispered, and soon his breathing evened out into sleep.
Sara lay awake, her body a map of conflicting territories. The tenderness of the man beside her. The brutal possession of the man downtown. And now, her husband’s unspoken desire, a kink that danced perilously close to the truth, a truth that would destroy him.
The hollow feeling wasn’t hollow anymore. It was filled with a cold, heavy dread. And beneath the dread, a new, terrifying filament of excitement sparked, connecting her two worlds in a way she had never imagined possible.
