Chapter 11: No Going Back
The bass hit Ellie’s chest like a physical blow, a relentless thump that vibrated through the soles of her cheap, strappy heels. Luxe’s VIP lounge was a sensory assault. Velvet banquettes swallowed patrons in deep crimson shadows, punctuated by the cold gleam of gold accents on low tables cluttered with sweating bottles and abandoned glasses. The air hung thick, a cloying cocktail of expensive cologne, spilled vodka, cloying vanilla perfume, and something darker, muskier beneath it all. Ellie blinked, trying to adjust. Her scalp still throbbed faintly beneath the platinum strands, a phantom ache from the bleach burn Sera had dismissed as ‘part of the process’.
"See?" Sera’s voice, sharp and bright, cut through the din. She materialized beside Ellie, radiating heat and a cloud of sugary-sweet fragrance. Her tiny sequined dress barely covered essentials, catching fractured light from the overhead chandeliers. "Told you this beats Neuro-whatever-the-fuck any night." She nudged Ellie hard with her hip. "Stop looking like a lost puppy at the pound. Smile! Own it!"
Ellie forced her lips upwards, the unfamiliar gloss sticky. She felt exposed, the borrowed top Sera had insisted on – black mesh and unforgivingly tight – leaving little to the imagination. Her own leggings felt suddenly prudish, inadequate armor against the predatory gazes sliding over her. Maya’s disgusted face flashed in her mind: Disgusting. The word echoed, mixing with the bass. She took a shaky sip from the lukewarm vodka soda Sera had shoved into her hand earlier. It tasted like antiseptic.
"Over here, Sparkles!" Sera grabbed Ellie’s wrist, her acrylic nails digging in just enough to sting. She hauled her towards a sunken seating area where three guys lounged, radiating entitlement and cheap beer fumes. One, blond and thick-necked, wearing a polo shirt stretched tight over his chest, grinned lazily as they approached. His eyes, slightly glazed, roamed freely over Sera, then lingered on Ellie’s chest.
"S'up, Sera," he drawled, his voice thick. "Who’s your friend?"
"Chad, meet Ellie," Sera chirped, pushing Ellie forward slightly. Ellie stumbled, her heel catching on the plush carpet. "Ellie’s new. Needs… loosening up." Sera winked conspiratorially at Chad.
Chad’s grin widened. He patted his thigh. "Plenty of room right here, Ellie." His friends chuckled, low and knowing.
Panic flared hot in Ellie’s chest. She glanced at Sera, seeking… what? Permission? Rescue? Sera just smiled, a predatory gleam in her heavily lined eyes. "Go on, Finch," she hissed, leaning close enough for Ellie to smell the vodka on her breath. "Show him what you practiced."
The memory of her awkward grinding in the dorm mirror, witnessed by Maya’s horrified stare, slammed into her. The shame, then the defiant rush. The desperate need to be seen. Chad’s expectant leer replaced Maya’s disgust. It was different. Cruder. Hungrier. But it was attention. Real, undeniable attention focused solely on her.
Before Ellie could formulate a thought, Sera planted both hands firmly on Ellie’s hips and shoved. Hard.
Ellie gasped, stumbling forward. Her knees hit the edge of the banquette, and she pitched sideways, landing awkwardly, half-sprawled across Chad’s lap. His thick arm instantly clamped around her waist, pulling her fully against him. He was solid, radiating heat, smelling of beer and sweat and something aggressively musky. Her cheek pressed against the rough fabric of his polo shirt.
"Whoa there," Chad chuckled, his grip tightening. "Easy, tiger."
Ellie froze. Every muscle locked. The bass pulsed against her back, pressed against Chad’s chest. His hand rested heavily on her thigh, just above the hem of her leggings. The sheer mesh top felt impossibly thin, his body heat searing through it. Maya’s voice screamed silently in her head: Cheap. Desperate. Pathetic.
"See?" Sera’s voice was triumphant, hovering nearby. "Told you she was ready to play. Show him, Ellie."
Chad’s hand slid. Slowly. Purposefully. Up her thigh. The rough pad of his thumb traced the seam of her leggings where they met bare skin. Ellie flinched, a choked sound escaping her lips – half-protest, half-shock. Her own hands fluttered uselessly, hovering near his shoulders.
"Relax," Chad murmured, his breath hot and damp against her ear. His other hand came up, fingers tangling roughly in the platinum hair at her nape, pulling her head back slightly. The tender, burned scalp screamed in protest. Ellie whimpered, the sound swallowed by the music.
His fingers slid higher. Past the hem. Onto bare skin. The touch was electric, invasive, claiming. A violation. Yet… beneath the shock, beneath the crawling revulsion… something else sparked. A treacherous warmth bloomed low in her belly. His eyes, locked on hers now, held a raw, uncomplicated hunger. For her. Not her notes. Not her quiet intellect. Her body. Her presence in his lap. The sheer power of being wanted, even like this, was intoxicating, drowning out Maya’s ghostly condemnation.
Sera leaned in, her lips brushing Ellie’s other ear. "Move, Finch," she commanded, her voice a low purr. "Grind. Like we practiced. Make him want it."
Chad’s fingers pressed harder against her inner thigh, possessive, demanding. The ache in her scalp flared. The vodka burned in her empty stomach. The bass hammered its relentless rhythm. Ellie closed her eyes for a second, shutting out the velvet shadows, the gold accents, Sera’s expectant smirk. She focused on the heat of Chad’s body beneath her, the heavy weight of his hand on her skin, the undeniable proof that she was here, she was seen.
She took a shuddering breath. Then, tentatively, she shifted her hips. A small, awkward roll against him.
Chad groaned, low and appreciative. His hand slid another fraction higher. "Yeah," he breathed. "Like that."
The choked gasp in Ellie’s throat caught, twisted. The phantom sting of bleach faded. The echo of Maya’s disgust dissolved into the thumping bass. A moan escaped her lips – soft at first, then louder, deeper, surprising even herself. It wasn't pleasure, not exactly. It was surrender. Release. The sound of the wall she’d built around herself crumbling into dust. She arched her back, pressing herself harder against him, meeting the demanding pressure of his hand with her own desperate movement. Her own newly adorned fingers dug into his shoulders, not pushing away, but clinging.
Sera laughed, a bright, brittle sound. "Atta girl, Finch! Own it!"
Ellie didn’t hear her. She was lost in the dizzying rush, the validation flooding her veins hotter and faster than any vodka. Chad’s approving groan vibrated through her. His roaming hands felt like trophies. The stares from his friends felt like applause. She moved again, less awkwardly now, finding a rhythm dictated by the bass and Chad’s insistent grip. The moan became a low hum in her throat, a constant counterpoint to the music. Proof. Proof she wasn’t invisible. Proof she could be wanted. Proof, whispered a treacherous voice inside her, that Maya was wrong. This wasn't falling. This was flying. Even if the ground was miles below, littered with textbooks and discarded sweaters and self-respect. She pressed her face into Chad’s neck, breathing in the cheap cologne and beer, the scent of her own dizzying, dangerous ascent.
