Chapter 17: Fractured Reflection
The stale scent of old paper and lukewarm coffee hung heavy in Maya’s cramped dorm room. Textbooks formed precarious towers on her desk, threatening to avalanche onto her open laptop. The single desk lamp flickered erratically, casting long, dancing shadows across band posters plastered haphazardly on the walls. A corkboard overflowed with color-coded notes and reminders, a testament to her meticulous control. Outside, the campus was quiet, wrapped in the thick velvet of a late Tuesday night. Inside Maya’s skull, the frantic buzz of overdue assignments competed with a low, persistent hum of worry. Ellie. Again.
Her fingers flew over the keyboard, typing furiously on her Cultural Anthropology paper. ‘The societal implications of performative femininity in digital spaces…’ The cursor blinked mockingly. She paused, rubbing her tired eyes beneath her oversized glasses. Ellie hadn’t answered any of her calls. Again. That frantic, unanswered buzzing from Ellie’s phone, echoing in Maya’s memory, felt like a physical itch she couldn’t scratch. The image of Ellie, lost somewhere in that chaotic room, probably tangled up with Sera or worse… Maya shuddered, pushing the intrusive, unwelcome thoughts away. Focus. Paragraph three.
She leaned closer to the screen, squinting at her notes. Then, the laptop screen flickered violently. Not the lamp this time. The screen itself. Maya jerked back. "What the hell?" she muttered, tapping the escape key. Nothing.
Instead of her carefully formatted document, fragmented images pulsed onto the display. Glossy, overlined lips parted in a silent moan. A flash of intricate black lace cupping impossibly full breasts. The deep, shadowed valley of cleavage, perfectly contoured and highlighted. They weren’t static pictures; they throbbed, pulsed in a rapid, hypnotic rhythm, stuttering like a corrupted video file. Accompanying the visual assault was a sound – not from the speakers, Maya realized with a jolt of cold dread, but seeming to emanate from inside her own head. A low, sibilant whisper, layered and impossible to pinpoint.
‘You want this…’ it breathed, the sound slithering down her spine. ‘Look at it… shiny… perfect…’
Maya’s breath hitched. She slammed her palm down on the touchpad. "Stop it!" The command was sharp, too loud in the quiet room. The images stuttered, fragmented further – a close-up of a nipple straining against sheer fabric, the curve of a hip disappearing into a tiny thong. The whisper intensified, curling around her thoughts like smoke.
‘You need their eyes on you…’ it insisted, a seductive hiss. ‘Like Ellie gets… all those eyes… hungry…’
"No," Maya whispered, shaking her head violently. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. This wasn’t real. Glitch. Virus. Bad RAM. Logical explanations tumbled through her mind, but they felt flimsy against the visceral pull of the images, the insidious intimacy of the voice. She could smell cheap strawberry perfume suddenly, thick and cloying, though her room smelled only of dust and academia. Ellie’s scent. From the party. From… everywhere now.
Her gaze was locked on the screen. The fragmented cleavage pulsed again, deep and inviting. Something hot and unfamiliar coiled low in her belly, a sharp, unwelcome pang of… something. Not desire. Not exactly. A strange, hollow ache. A yearning for… what? That impossible gloss? That blatant display? The power Ellie seemed to wield now, strutting across campus with her ass pushed out, cleavage always on display, drawing stares like magnets? Maya’s fingers, resting on the edge of the desk, twitched. Not towards the keyboard.
They drifted, almost of their own accord, towards the top button of her worn, flannel pajama top. The sturdy cotton felt suddenly heavy, suffocating. Conservative. Safe. Boring. The whisper slithered closer, intimate, almost amused.
‘See how easy it is? Just a little peek… show them…’
Her fingertip brushed the cool plastic button. A tremor ran through her hand. The image on the screen coalesced momentarily – Ellie’s face, superimposed over the contoured cleavage, smirking. Not Ellie as Maya knew her, but Ellie transformed: heavy makeup, hungry eyes, lips parted in that same silent moan. Maya gasped, jerking her hand back as if burned.
"Fuck off!" she snarled, slamming the laptop lid shut with a decisive clack. The sudden darkness was absolute, broken only by the erratic flicker of the desk lamp. Silence roared in her ears, louder than the whisper had been. Her chest heaved. The phantom scent of strawberry lingered. That hot coil in her belly tightened, a knot of shame and confusion and something terrifyingly close to envy.
She sat frozen in the dark, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of the desk. The silence stretched, thick and accusing. The lamp flickered once more, then died completely, plunging her into near-total darkness. Only the faint glow from her phone screen on the nightstand offered any light. Maya stared at it, unseeing. Her skin felt too tight. Her pajamas suddenly felt like a prison. The whisper echoed in the hollow space behind her ribs, quieter now, but persistent.
‘You want it…’
She bit down hard on her lower lip, tasting blood. The taste was sharp, real. It grounded her, just a little. Ellie hadn’t answered. Again. Maya’s gaze finally focused on her phone’s dim glow. Five missed calls. To Ellie. And now, silence. Heavy, waiting silence. And the lingering, impossible taste of cheap strawberries and something darker, whispering just beneath the surface.
