Chapter 9: Platinum Ruin

The bleach stung like tiny hornets swarming Ellie’s scalp. She squeezed her eyes shut against the bright salon lights, breathing shallowly through her mouth to avoid the harsh ammonia tang mingling with the cloying sweetness of floral perfumes. Above the low thrum of hairdryers and the murmur of other clients, the stylist’s voice chirped, relentlessly upbeat.

"Almost done processing, sweetie! Honestly, this base is so lifting nicely. Going platinum is a commitment, but wow, the payoff." Tina, her name tag declared, dipped a brush into a fresh bowl of white paste, adding another layer. The cold, thick sensation made Ellie shiver. Commitment. Yes. That’s what this was.

Just like Sera’s, Ellie thought, the image of the effortlessly popular senior with her cascade of white-gold hair flashing vividly. Sera never blended into the background. Sera commanded attention, effortlessly, wherever she went. Especially from guys like... Ellie pushed the memory of the bathroom, the rough hands, the stifling heat, the sticky aftermath, deep down. That was the before. This was necessary. A transformation. Validation required sacrifice. The sharp sting was proof it was working.

"Seriously, Tina," another stylist, leaning against a counter and filing a set of neon-pink nails, chimed in. She nodded towards Ellie. "With that bone structure and this color? Forget beating them off with a stick. You'll need a damn riot shield." She laughed, a sharp, tinkling sound. "The guys at Sigma Kappa won't know what hit 'em."

Ellie’s stomach did that familiar flip, a mix of nausea and a desperate, gnawing hunger. Not fear. Not anymore. Anticipation. The idea of eyes – their eyes – finally seeing her, really seeing her, not just looking through her... it was a drug. Worth any burning. Worth anything. A phantom ache pulsed low in her belly, a lingering echo of pressure against the sink’s cold porcelain. She shifted in the plush chair.

"Riot shield," Ellie repeated softly, forcing a small, tight smile. It felt alien on her face.

"Damn right!" Tina beamed, expertly smoothing the bleach. "Okay, time's up! Let's rinse this magic off and see what we’ve got. Then the fun part – the extensions!"

The rinse was a relief, a cool waterfall washing away the chemical fire, though her scalp remained hypersensitive, raw. Wrapped in a towel, dripping, she was led back to the styling chair. Tina fluttered around her, humming, sectioning the damp, pale-yellow strands. Then came the extensions – long, flowing ribbons of synthetic platinum, cool and smooth against her fingers when Tina let her touch one. The stylist worked with practiced speed, tiny bonds heating, sealing, weaving the foreign hair into Ellie’s own with near-invisible precision. Layer upon layer, length upon length. Ellie watched, mesmerized, as her reflection blurred, replaced by someone else. Someone with a thick, impossible mane of icy blonde hair cascading well past her shoulders. It was heavy. Unfamiliar. Glamorous.

"Okay, superstar," Tina announced, stepping back to admire her handiwork, hands on her hips. "Hair? Check. Time for the finishing touches. Marcy? Your turn!"

Marcy, the nail tech, swooped in, her cart rattling with polishes, files, and pots of glitter. Ellie numbly offered her hands. Her own nails were short, practical, often ink-stained from frantic note-taking. Marcy tutted softly, picking up Ellie’s right hand, examining the bitten-down nails and ragged cuticles with a critical eye. "Oh honey, we have some work to do. Don't you worry, Marcy's got you."

The emery board scratched, the nail drill whirred, vibrating unpleasantly up Ellie’s arms. Acrylic dust filled the air, a fine, chemical-smelling powder. Marcy sculpted, glued, layered. Each nail grew, elongating Ellie’s fingers into something alien and elegant. Then came the polish – a base coat, then a thick layer of pure, liquid silver glitter. Marcy applied it meticulously, the tiny metallic flakes catching the salon lights, sparkling like crushed diamonds trapped in glass. Ellie watched, hypnotized, as her hands transformed into something belonging to a mannequin, or a pop star. Something designed purely to be looked at, admired. Something expensive.

"Hold still, sweetie, almost there," Marcy murmured, concentrating. "Top coat... and... voila!" She gave Ellie's hand a gentle pat. "Go on, give 'em a wiggle!"

Ellie lifted her hands. The nails were long, strong points, catching the light with every tiny movement, throwing dazzling little stars onto the marble counter, onto Tina's black apron, onto Ellie’s own sweater. They felt heavy. Dangerous. Utterly impractical. Perfect.

Tina returned, brandishing a blow dryer and a large round brush. "Let's bring this masterpiece to life!"

The roar of the dryer filled Ellie’s ears, a warm hurricane swirling around her head. Tina pulled, smoothed, curled. The heavy extensions lifted and fell, settling into a cascade of perfect, salon-shiny waves. The heat felt good on her tender scalp. Comforting. Punishing. Deserved. Through the noise, snippets of stylist chatter reached her: "...totaled her BMW, can you believe it?..." "...three hundred dollars for highlights, and she complained about the toner!..." "...saw Brad with that new transfer at The Keg last night..." Life happening, normal, mundane. Ellie felt lightyears away.

Finally, the dryer switched off. The sudden silence was jarring. Tina spun the chair around dramatically, positioning it directly in front of the large, well-lit mirror. "Okay," she breathed, her voice thick with anticipation. "Are you ready?"

Ellie looked up.

The reflection was a stranger. A stunning, alien creature stared back. Waves of impossible platinum hair framed a face she barely recognized. Her usual oversized glasses seemed jarringly out of place against the artifice, magnifying eyes that looked wide, startled, lost in the unfamiliar landscape. The harsh, trendy cut of her hair made her neck look too thin, her shoulders fragile beneath the soft, worn wool of her favorite sweater – now looking shabby and desperately out of sync with the glittering nails and the Hollywood hair. The nails... she lifted her hand slightly. The glittering points flashed, sharp and bright, scratching the air. They belonged to someone else. Someone confident. Someone desired.

This wasn't blending in. This was armor. A weapon. A desperate signal flare.

Eleanor Finch, a tiny, panicked voice whispered deep inside, muffled by the weight of the hair, drowned out by the dazzle of the nails. Where are you?

The reflection offered no answer. Just a beautiful, hollow-eyed girl with glittering claws and a waterfall of borrowed gold. Ellie touched the glass, the cool tip of her glittering nail clicking softly against the surface. The sound was small. Final.
