Chapter 10: The Witness
The scent of sex and Ben’s cologne hung thick and cloying in the air, a humid blanket pressing down on Ella. Her cheek was still mashed into the pillowcase, damp with sweat and tears. Her entire body felt hollowed out, trembling with aftershocks and a bone-deep exhaustion that warred violently with the frantic hammering of her heart. Ben’s thumb, tracing that possessive line down her hip, felt like a brand. She flinched again, pulling away instinctively, curling her legs beneath her sticky thighs.
"Look at you," Ben murmured again, the roughness in his voice smoothed into something almost conversational, yet utterly chilling. His gaze felt heavy, assessing. "All wrecked. Used." A faint, satisfied smirk touched his lips. "Exactly how you should be."
Shame flooded her, hot and corrosive. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the image of James asleep on the couch, oblivious. Trying to erase the memory of her own desperate pleas, the way her body had betrayed her so completely. What have I done? The thought screamed silently inside her skull. James… Oh God, James…
A sharp, distinct creak cut through the heavy silence.
It came from the hallway floorboard just outside Ben’s bedroom door.
Ella froze. Every muscle locked. Her breath hitched, trapped painfully in her chest. Time stopped.
"Ella?" James’s voice, thick with sleep, drifted through the wood. "You in there? Thought I heard something."
Panic, pure and icy, seized her. Her eyes flew open, wide with terror, locking onto Ben’s face mere inches away. His expression shifted instantly. The cold calculation vanished, replaced by a predatory alertness. His hand shot up, clamping hard over her mouth before she could make a sound. His palm was rough, smelling faintly of her own arousal and his skin. He pressed down, silencing her utterly. His other hand slid swiftly between her legs, fingers finding her slick, swollen flesh with brutal efficiency.
No! Her mind screamed. She thrashed weakly beneath him, a muffled whimper escaping against his palm. His fingers weren’t gentle. They plunged into her, still sensitive and throbbing from the recent invasion. A jolt of unwanted sensation ripped through her – sharp, shocking, a traitorous echo of the pleasure that had shattered her moments before. She arched involuntarily, a strangled gasp vibrating against his hand.
Ben leaned in, his lips brushing her ear. His whisper was a venomous hiss, barely audible but cutting through her terror like a knife. "Stay. Quiet." His fingers moved inside her, a cruel, deliberate mimicry. "Let him hear," he breathed, the words hot and obscene against her skin. "Let him hear just how fucking wet you still are for me."
Tears welled, spilling over instantly, hot tracks down her temples. Humiliation burned hotter than the shame. James was right there. Inches away. And Ben… Ben was violating her silence, forcing her body to betray her again, using her own treacherous responses as a weapon.
"Ella?" James called again, closer now. The doorknob rattled faintly. "You okay? Door’s locked."
Ben’s fingers curled deeper, pressing against a spot that sent an involuntary, devastating spasm through her core. Her muffled scream was swallowed by his hand, transforming into a choked, desperate sob that vibrated against his palm. Her hips jerked against her will, seeking friction even as her mind recoiled in horror. The wet sound of his fingers moving inside her seemed impossibly loud in the sudden, charged silence of the room.
Ben watched her face, his eyes dark pits of triumph and malice. "That’s it," he whispered, his voice thick with dark satisfaction. "Let him hear it. Let him hear his good girl dripping for his roommate."
Outside, James paused. Ella could picture him, confused, sleepy, standing just beyond the barrier. The silence stretched, agonizing. Was he listening? Could he hear the frantic pounding of her heart? The obscene, wet slide of Ben’s fingers? The ragged, muffled breaths she couldn’t control?
"Must’ve been the TV," James mumbled finally, his voice fading slightly as if he’d turned away. "Or maybe the pipes. Weird." His footsteps retreated down the hallway, the creaking floorboard groaning once more under his weight.
The sound faded. He was gone.
Ben didn’t remove his hand immediately. He held her gaze, his fingers still buried deep, moving with slow, deliberate cruelty. Ella lay rigid beneath him, tears streaming freely now, silent sobs shaking her frame. The relief that James hadn’t discovered them was instantly drowned by a fresh wave of nauseating shame. Ben had forced her to participate in her own degradation while James stood unknowing on the other side of the door.
Finally, he withdrew his hand. The sudden emptiness was another violation. He wiped his wet fingers casually on the dark sheet beside her hip. Only then did he lift his palm from her mouth. She gasped in a ragged, shuddering breath, the air stinging her lungs.
He pushed himself up, swinging his legs off the bed. The mattress shifted, groaning under his weight. Ella curled tighter into herself, pulling her knees up to her chest, trying to make herself small, invisible. The cool air felt like ice on her exposed skin. She could feel the sticky mess between her thighs, the dull ache deep inside, the ghost of Ben’s fingers and his cock. The scent of sex, sweat, and betrayal clung to her.
Ben stood, stretching, the lean muscles of his back rippling in the dim light filtering through the blinds. He didn’t look at her. He walked towards the wardrobe, his movements unhurried, utterly unconcerned. He pulled out a pair of dark sweatpants and shrugged them on.
"Better clean up," he said over his shoulder, his voice flat, devoid of the earlier venom but chillingly devoid of anything else. "Before lover boy wakes up properly and wonders where you are." He glanced back at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes – contempt, maybe, or simple dismissal. "And Ella?" He paused, his hand on the doorknob. "Don’t forget who owns that cunt now."
He opened the door and stepped out into the hallway, closing it softly behind him.
Ella was alone. Utterly alone in the wreckage. The silence pressed in, heavier than before. The faint hum of the fan was the only sound, a monotonous drone underscoring the chaos in her head. She stared at the closed door, then down at her own trembling hands. The reality crashed over her in relentless waves: the irrevocable loss, the searing betrayal, the terrifying power Ben wielded over her body… and the suffocating knowledge that James, her kind, trusting James, was asleep just down the hall, completely unaware that the foundation of their world had just been obliterated. The sticky evidence cooling on her thighs felt like a brand. She had to move. She had to get out of this room. But her body felt leaden, trapped in the suffocating scent of her own ruin.
