Chapter 3: Interrupted
The jagged edge of the broken key bit deep, a sudden, sharp sting slicing through the suffocating heat Ben radiated. Ella gasped, more shock than pain, flinching back as if electrocuted. Her hand flew open instinctively. The snapped keychain clattered to the floorboards, one jagged half still clutched in her bleeding palm, the other skittering towards the worn rug in the living room. Bright crimson welled instantly, vivid against her pale skin, a shocking counterpoint to the dizzying, forbidden flush that had consumed her seconds before.
Reality crashed in with the brutal finality of the front door lock clicking open.
"Babe?" James' voice, familiar, warm, slightly muffled by the bag of groceries Ella knew he’d be carrying, echoed from the tiny entryway. "You here? Thought I saw your car…"
Ben didn’t move. His arms remained loosely at his sides now, but his eyes—dark, unreadable, still holding a trace of that unnerving intensity—never left Ella’s face. A single droplet of water from his damp hair traced a path down his temple. He didn’t look alarmed by the blood, by James’ arrival. He looked… expectant. As if waiting to see how she’d play the next desperate card.
Panic, cold and sharp, replaced the liquid fire in Ella’s veins. She snatched her bleeding hand back, pressing it hard against the front of her jeans. The denim instantly soaked through, the pressure sending fresh jolts of pain up her arm, anchoring her somehow. "James!" Her voice cracked, too loud, too high. "Yeah! I'm… I'm here!"
Footsteps approached, the comfortable, slightly shuffling gait of James carrying weight. Ella couldn’t tear her gaze from Ben, the naked expanse of his body suddenly feeling like an indictment, a crime scene she stood at the center of. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum solo threatening to drown out everything.
Ben finally moved. Not towards her, not away. A slow, deliberate pivot towards the sound of James entering the hallway. He didn’t cover himself. He stood there, water glistening on his shoulders, his defined chest, the trail of dark hair leading down… utterly exposed. Utterly unconcerned.
James rounded the corner, his arms laden with grocery bags. His easy smile faltered as he took in the scene: Ella pressed back against the wall, face flushed, eyes wide with something that wasn’t quite fear; Ben, gloriously, impossibly naked, water pooling faintly on the floorboards around his feet; and the snapped keychain gleaming dully near Ella’s shoes.
"Whoa," James breathed, his brow furrowing. He dumped the bags unceremoniously just inside the living room. "Uhh… everything okay? Ben? What the hell, man?"
Ben stretched languidly, muscles rippling across his shoulders and chest. He scratched his jaw, a picture of casual nonchalance. "Just caught an intruder," he said, his voice dry, the faintest hint of amusement beneath the roughness. He gestured loosely towards Ella with his chin. "Little mouse was rustling around in the closet. Scared the piss out of me." His gaze slid back to Ella, lingering for a fraction of a second too long. "Nearly gave her a heart attack too, I think."
James blinked, processing. His focus shifted entirely to Ella. "Babe? Intruder? What’s…?" His eyes dropped, landing on the dark stain blooming on the denim covering her thigh, the hand pressed tightly against it. "Jesus, Ella! Are you hurt?" He was beside her in two strides, his hands gentle but urgent as he tried to pry her clenched fist away from her leg. "What happened? Let me see!"
His touch, usually comforting, felt alien. Too much. Ella flinched back, bumping against the wall again. The scent of Ben’s soap and clean sweat still hung thick in the air, clashing violently with the mundane smell of paper grocery bags and James’ familiar, slightly spicy cologne. She couldn’t look at Ben, couldn’t bear to see that knowing look while James fussed over her.
"It’s… it’s nothing," she stammered, finally letting James gently lift her hand. The jagged piece of key was still embedded shallowly in her palm. Blood oozed steadily from the deep cut beneath it. "I… I came to get your keys. You left them… again." Her voice sounded thin, distant. "I dropped them. Snapped when I grabbed them." She couldn’t bring herself to mention the closet, Ben’s emergence, the terrifying, thrilling moment his palm slammed the wall beside her head.
James winced, examining the wound. "Shit, Ella. That’s deep. Looks nasty." His thumb brushed the edge of the cut, making her gasp. Concern etched deep lines around his eyes. "Ben, grab a towel or something? And maybe some clothes, for Christ’s sake? You’re freaking her out."
Ben shrugged, a fluid movement of muscle. "She’s the one hiding in closets." But he turned, moving with that easy, confident stride towards the bathroom he’d just left, the muscles in his back flexing. Ella squeezed her eyes shut, trying to erase the image burned onto her retinas.
"Here." Ben’s voice was closer again. Ella opened her eyes. He held out a clean white hand towel, thankfully now with a faded pair of gym shorts slung low on his hips. His bare chest was still distractingly close, damp and gleaming. He offered the towel to James, not her. Their fingers didn’t touch.
James took it, pressing it firmly against Ella’s palm. "Hold that tight. Pressure." He looked up at Ben, annoyance warring with his usual easygoing nature. "Seriously, man? Scaring her half to death?"
"Not my fault she bolts like a startled deer," Ben replied, leaning a shoulder against the hallway wall near the bathroom door, arms crossed. He watched James tend to Ella, his expression unreadable again, but his eyes… his eyes held a flicker of something dark. Possessive? Amused? Ella couldn’t tell, and that terrified her more. "Besides," Ben added, a slight smirk touching his lips, "looks like she handled the domestic emergency just fine. Mostly."
Domestic emergency. The words felt like acid. Ella focused on the rough texture of the towel against her skin, the sharp throb of the cut. Anything to avoid looking at Ben, to avoid acknowledging the electric hum still vibrating low in her belly, stubbornly persisting beneath the fear and the guilt. James loved her. He was gentle. He was trying to understand her boundaries, even if it frustrated him. And Ben… Ben was… this.
James carefully wrapped the towel around her hand, securing it with gentle pressure. "Come on, let’s get this cleaned up properly in the kitchen." He shot Ben a look. "You mind?"
Ben pushed off the wall. "All yours," he said, his voice flat. He turned towards his bedroom door. "Try not to bleed on the couch," he threw over his shoulder before disappearing inside, the door clicking shut with soft finality.
Relief, immediate and overwhelming, washed over Ella, leaving her shaky and slightly nauseous. She leaned into James as he guided her towards the cluttered kitchen, his arm solid and safe around her shoulders.
"Sorry about Ben," James murmured, steering her towards the sink. He turned on the cold tap, the sound loud in the sudden quiet. "He’s an ass, but he doesn’t mean anything by it." He began unwinding the blood-soaked towel. "Just… why were you in the closet?"
The question, innocent, reasonable, slammed into her. Ella stared at the swirling pink water in the sink as James carefully rinsed the cut. The jagged slice stung fiercely under the icy flow, making her hiss. The physical pain was grounding, a sharp counterpoint to the chaotic storm inside.
"I told you," she whispered, forcing her voice steady. "I dropped the keys. They… they slid under the door." Her throat felt tight. "I reached for them… and then Ben opened it." She left out the desperate scramble, the frantic hiding, the agonizing seconds watching him through the curtain, the way her body had reacted when he trapped her. The truth felt like shards of glass in her mouth.
James gently probed the edges of the cut. "Damn, it’s deeper than I thought. Might need a butterfly bandage." He looked up, his brown eyes filled with soft concern. "He really freaked you out, huh? You’re trembling."
She was. Uncontrollably. The adrenaline crash, the shock, the lingering, unwelcome echo of Ben’s proximity. "Yeah," she breathed, the word barely audible. "Just… startled. Really startled." She forced herself to meet James’ eyes, searching for any flicker of suspicion, any hint he sensed the storm beneath her skin. There was only worry. Only care. The guilt twisted deeper, a physical ache beneath her ribs.
He dried her hand carefully with a paper towel, avoiding the cut. "Okay. First aid kit’s under the sink. Sit." He nudged her towards one of the mismatched kitchen chairs.
Ella sank onto it, the hard plastic cold through her jeans. She watched James crouch, rummaging under the sink. The familiar sight of him – his slightly messy dark hair, the dependable set of his shoulders – usually brought comfort. Now it felt like a reproach. Her gaze drifted involuntarily down the hallway towards Ben’s closed door. Behind it was everything she wasn’t supposed to want. Everything her body screamed for. The memory of his heat, the scent of him, the sheer, overwhelming presence of him… it sent a fresh tremor through her, one that had nothing to do with fear.
He was just a room away. The thought was terrifying. Thrilling.
James straightened, first aid kit in hand. "Got it." He pulled out antiseptic wipes, bandages. "This might sting," he warned gently.
Ella braced herself as he dabbed the cool wipe against the cut. The sharp bite of antiseptic made her gasp, but she welcomed it. It burned cleanly. Unlike the other fire inside her – the one Ben had ignited, the one that felt dangerously like it might consume everything she thought she knew about herself, about James, about the carefully constructed walls she called principles.
She looked down at her hand in James’ steady grip. The blood was washed away, revealing the raw, angry line across her palm. A small, sharp wound. Nothing compared to the fracture she felt splitting her world apart.
"Ow," she murmured, less about the sting and more about the internal chaos.
James smiled sympathetically, his thumb brushing her knuckles. "Almost done. Then I’ll make it up to you. Dinner? My treat. Somewhere nice." He applied a butterfly bandage with careful precision. "You look like you need it."
Ella managed a weak nod. "Yeah. Okay. Dinner sounds good." Her voice sounded hollow, even to herself.
As James finished bandaging her hand, his touch tender and attentive, Ella stared past him, at the faint line of light spilling from beneath Ben’s bedroom door. The antiseptic burned on her skin. But deeper down, a different kind of heat simmered, stubborn and insistent. A heat born in a steamy bathroom, intensified by a naked form in a dim hallway, and sealed with the sharp snap of a key and the scent of her own blood. It refused to be washed away. It clung, a dark, undeniable ember glowing in the wreckage of her resolve. The salt water sting was nothing compared to the ache it left behind.
