Chapter 2: The Trap
The silence outside the closet door was worse than the footsteps. Thick. Suffocating. Ella pressed her forehead harder against the cool wood, the rough grain imprinting itself on her skin. Her knuckles were white around James’ keys, the metal biting deep. Every ragged breath she drew tasted like dust and stale wool coats. He knows. He knows I’m here. The thought screamed inside her skull.
Then, the soft, wet sound of bare feet shifting on the hallway floorboards. A pause. Right outside the door. Ella squeezed her eyes shut, praying with a fervency she hadn't felt since childhood confirmation classes. Please make him go away. Please make him walk past.
The closet door handle rattled softly.
Ella’s breath stopped. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a frantic fist. No. No, no, no.
The door swung inward with a soft groan of hinges. Dim hallway light sliced into the darkness, illuminating swirling dust motes and the faded floral print of an old coat beside her face. And him. Ben. Standing there, filling the doorway. Utterly naked. Water still glistened on the hard ridges of his abdomen, tracing paths through the dark trail of hair leading down from his navel. Droplets clung to his forearms, his powerful thighs. The scent of cheap peach soap and clean, male sweat washed over her, overpowering the closet’s mustiness.
He didn’t speak. His dark eyes, intense and unreadable, locked onto hers. There was no surprise, only that unnerving calm, that predatory stillness she’d glimpsed through the shower curtain. A faint, almost imperceptible curve touched his lips. Not a smile. An assessment.
Panic detonated. Pure, blinding terror. Ella didn't think. She acted. With a choked gasp, she shoved past him, ducking under his arm. Her shoulder scraped against the rough stubble of his chest. The heat radiating off his bare skin was shocking, a brand against her thin t-shirt. She stumbled into the hallway, the keys slipping from her sweaty grasp. They clattered loudly on the worn wooden floorboards, skittering away towards the living room.
"Shit!" she hissed, scrambling after them on unsteady legs. Her knees felt like jelly. The image of him, naked and dripping, burned behind her eyelids. The sheer, overwhelming presence of him filled the narrow hallway.
She bent, fingers fumbling for the cold metal. Behind her, she heard the heavy, deliberate tread. Closer. Too close. She straightened, clutching the keys like a shield, and whirled around.
He was right there. Inches away. Towering over her. The damp heat radiating from his body enveloped her. Water droplets clung to his collarbone, catching the weak light. Her gaze, against her will, flickered down. Past the hard planes of his chest, the defined ridges of his stomach… stopping, frozen, on the thick, heavy weight of his cock, hanging heavy and semi-erect between his thighs. Her mouth went dry. That primal ache flared again, hot and insistent, low in her belly, warring violently with the terror.
He didn't hesitate. His arm shot out. Not towards her, but past her head. His calloused palm slammed against the wall beside her ear with a solid thump, caging her in. The impact vibrated through the plaster. His other hand braced against the wall on her other side, pinning her completely. Trapped. Between the hard wall and the hard, wet heat of his body. The scent of him – soap, steam, clean sweat, something fundamentally male – flooded her senses. His chest was mere centimeters from hers. She could see the pulse beating steadily in the hollow of his throat.
Ella whimpered. It wasn't a sound of protest. It was pure, raw need escaping, thin and desperate. Her body betrayed her utterly. Her thighs clenched together involuntarily, trying to quell the sudden, shocking throb between them. Her nipples tightened painfully against the fabric of her bra. She couldn't look away from his face, couldn't escape the dark intensity of his gaze boring into hers.
"Looking for something?" Ben's voice was low, rough-edged from the shower steam. It vibrated in the small space between them. His eyes didn't leave hers, but the faint curve on his lips deepened slightly. He knew exactly what she’d been looking at. What she was looking at now.
"J-James' keys," she stammered, her voice trembling. She held them up weakly, a pathetic barrier. "He forgot them. I just came to… grab them." The lie sounded feeble even to her own ears.
Ben tilted his head, a fraction. A droplet of water slid from his temple down his jawline. "Funny place to grab them," he murmured, his gaze dropping pointedly to the keys clutched in her shaking hand, then slowly, deliberately, tracing a path down her body before lifting back to her face. The heat in his eyes wasn't anger. It was something else. Something hotter. Darker. Knowing. "The closet?"
"I… I dropped them," she whispered, her cheeks burning. Shame warred with the liquid heat pooling low in her abdomen. His nearness was overwhelming. The sheer physicality of him, the damp heat radiating off his skin, the subtle shift of muscle beneath it. The forbidden proximity. Every nerve ending screamed.
He leaned in, just a fraction. Close enough that his breath, warm and damp, ghosted over her forehead. Ella flinched, pressing herself harder against the wall, trying to disappear. Her breath hitched again, shallow and fast.
"Scared, Ella?" The question was soft, almost conversational, but laced with an undeniable challenge. His eyes held hers, unblinking. Waiting. Watching her reaction.
She was terrified. But that wasn't the only thing. The ache between her legs was a persistent, demanding thrum. Her skin felt hypersensitive, prickling everywhere his heat touched. She hated him. Hated this power he had over her. Hated the way her body responded despite her mind screaming wrong, wrong, wrong. She loved James. She believed in waiting. But God, the way Ben looked at her… the way he smelled… the sheer, undeniable want radiating from him…
She opened her mouth. To deny it? To scream? She didn't know. Nothing came out but another shaky breath. Her gaze flickered down again, drawn irresistibly to the heavy weight of him so close to her hip. Her knuckles whitened around the keys. The cold metal was the only solid thing in a world tilting violently off its axis. The silence stretched, thick with tension, charged with the unspoken hunger crackling between them. His dark eyes held hers, waiting. The damp heat of his body pressed against the small space separating them, an unbearable promise. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat echoing the insistent pulse low in her belly. The keys dug into her palm, a sharp, grounding pain that felt like the last fraying thread tethering her to who she thought she was.
