However, Ella feels new found desires about James' roommate Ben, who is tall handsome and muscular. One day witnesses Ben naked in James' shower, causing her significant distress and intrigue when she sees his huge cock. Ben slowly seduced Ella.

Chapter 4: Midnight look

The taste of James’ lips still lingered, warm and familiar, mingling with the faint tang of the cheap Italian wine they’d shared. Ella pressed her back against the cool wood of his bedroom door, her breath catching in her throat. The room smelled faintly of stale laundry and the citrusy aftershave James favored. His hands, moments ago tracing heated paths under her sweater, now hung loosely at his sides. The frustration radiating off him was a physical thing, thick and humid in the small space.

"Come on, Ella," James pleaded, his voice rough with a mix of desire and exasperation. He ran a hand through his already messy dark hair. "It’s been years. We love each other. What are we waiting for? A piece of paper? A church bell?" He gestured vaguely towards the window overlooking the dimly lit parking lot. "This… this feels like punishment sometimes."

Ella flinched. Her own pulse hammered against the fragile cage of her ribs, echoing the frantic beat of her conflicted heart. The heat James had ignited still simmered low in her belly, a treacherous warmth that warred violently with the cold knot of conviction tightening in her chest. She looked down at her bandaged palm, the neat butterfly bandage stark against her skin – a silent reminder of jagged metal, panic, and Ben’s unnerving proximity just days ago. The phantom sting seemed to intensify.

"It’s not punishment, James," she whispered, her voice sounding small and strained even to her own ears. She wrapped her arms protectively around herself, the soft cotton of her sweater suddenly insufficient armor. "It’s… it’s a promise. To myself. To… to what I believe is right." She met his eyes, seeing the hurt flicker beneath the frustration. "I love you. You know I do. But this… I need to wait."

James sighed, a long, heavy sound that seemed to deflate him. He leaned back against his cluttered desk, knocking over an empty soda can. It clattered hollowly on the worn laminate floor. "Right. What you believe." He rubbed his temples. "Sometimes it feels like you believe in this… idea more than you believe in us. In what we could be."

The accusation landed like a physical blow. Ella’s vision blurred slightly. "That’s not fair," she breathed, the words catching. The warmth inside her curdled into a sickening mix of guilt and defensiveness. "It’s not about us being less. It’s about… about purity. About giving that gift properly."

"Properly?" James echoed, a bitter edge creeping into his tone. He pushed off the desk, pacing the few short steps to his unmade bed and back. "Properly according to who? Your grandma? Some dusty rulebook?" He stopped in front of her, his gaze intense. "It feels real now, Ella. Right here. With me. Doesn’t it?"

It did. Oh God, it did. The memory of his hands, his mouth, the sheer physical pull… it warred violently with the image of Ben stepping out of the steam, water sluicing down defined muscle, the predatory stillness in his eyes when he saw her pressed against the wall. That forbidden heat surged again, terrifying in its intensity, completely separate from the love she felt for James. It felt primal, urgent, a wildfire threatening her carefully tended garden of principles.

"I… I need air," Ella stammered, pushing past him before he could react. The closeness was suffocating. "Bathroom." She practically fled the room, the worn carpet muffling her hurried footsteps.

The hallway outside was dim, illuminated only by the weak light spilling from James’ doorway and the faint blue glow of a gaming console standby light from the living room. The familiar apartment smells – stale beer, old pizza boxes, the faint chemical tang of carpet cleaner – usually felt comfortably shabby. Now they felt oppressive. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum against the silence. She needed cold water on her face. Space to breathe. To quell the confusing storm inside her.

She turned towards the small bathroom James shared with Ben. As she passed Ben’s bedroom door, her gaze flickered towards it automatically, drawn like a magnet despite herself. It was cracked open, just an inch or two. Wider than usual. A sliver of warm, yellow light spilled onto the dingy hallway carpet.

And through that sliver, she saw.

Ben sat on the edge of his unmade bed, bathed in the glow of a single bedside lamp. He wore only low-slung grey sweatpants. His torso was bare, the lean muscles of his abdomen and chest sharply defined in the lamplight, shadows pooling in the hollows. His head was tilted back slightly, eyes closed, jaw clenched. One large hand was wrapped firmly around the thick, rigid length of his erection, moving with a slow, deliberate rhythm. The other hand braced against the mattress beside him, knuckles white. A low, guttural groan escaped him, vibrating in the stillness of the hallway.

Time stopped. Ella froze mid-step, her breath trapped in her lungs. Every nerve ending screamed. The sight was visceral, raw, utterly consuming. The forbidden fantasy made terrifyingly real. Heat exploded within her, a molten rush that obliterated thought, shame, principle. It was pure, primal magnetism, pulling her gaze, rooting her to the spot. Her bandaged palm throbbed in sync with the frantic pulse between her legs.

Then, as if sensing her presence, Ben’s eyes snapped open.

His gaze locked directly onto hers through the narrow gap in the door. There was no surprise. No embarrassment. Only a dark, intense focus that pinned her in place. His hand didn’t stop its rhythmic motion. If anything, it seemed to tighten, the movement becoming more pronounced, deliberate. A challenge. An invitation. A silent acknowledgment of the electric current that had always crackled between them.

A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched his lips. His eyes burned into hers, holding her captive. The low groan deepened, vibrating in his chest, a sound meant solely for her ears.

Panic, sharp and icy, finally shattered the spell. Ella wrenched her gaze away, stumbling backwards. Her hip slammed into the hallway wall with a dull thud. She spun around, heart pounding a frantic tattoo against her ribs, threatening to burst free. She fled back towards James’ room, the image of Ben – his intense stare, the deliberate movement of his hand, the sheer, overwhelming presence of him – seared onto her retinas.

She burst into James’ room, slamming the door shut behind her with more force than intended. She leaned against it, gasping, her chest heaving. Her face felt impossibly hot.

James looked up from where he’d been staring moodily at his phone. His brow furrowed. "Whoa. You okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost." He took in her flushed face, her wide, panicked eyes. "What happened?"

Ella couldn’t speak. Her throat was tight, dry. She shook her head violently, pressing her bandaged hand against her burning cheek. The phantom sensation of Ben’s gaze, the echo of that low groan, the impossible image… it flooded her senses, drowning out everything else. The carefully constructed walls of her conviction felt paper-thin, crumbling to ash before the undeniable, terrifying heat of that single, shared look. The jagged piece of key hidden in her pocket felt like it was burning a hole through the denim. James’ concerned face swam before her, distant, blurred. All she could see was the challenge in Ben’s dark eyes, the deliberate, claiming stroke of his hand. The silence in the room pressed down on her, thick with her unspoken transgression and the terrifying knowledge that Ben knew. He knew exactly what he’d done to her.
