Chapter 17: THe wolf GIft
The emerald velvet feels like armor. Heavy. Unyielding. It presses the stiffened bodice against your ribs, lifts your still-throbbing breasts high and uncomfortably prominent. The low neckline feels like an invitation you didn’t issue. Every step towards the roar of the great hall sends a fresh throb through your lower belly, a deep echo of Alpha’s claiming hours before. Your ten sons flank you, boots unnervingly silent on the flagstones, their amber eyes scanning shadows like restless hounds. The scent of roasting boar and spilled ale grows thick, cloying, mixing poorly with the lingering damp-earth musk clinging to your skin beneath the perfume Jaina hastily dabbed on your throat.
You pause at the arched entrance. Torchlight spills out, painting the hall in flickering gold and deep shadow. The noise hits you first – a hundred voices tangled in laughter, gossip, the clatter of plates. Then the heat, thick as stew. And then the stares. They turn, one by one, your family and guests of the keep, their conversations dying mid-sentence as they register you. The whispers start, sharp as knives.
“Lady Rachel?”
“Gods, is that…?”
“She looks… different.”
“What happened to her?”
“Who are those brutes?”
Your father stands near the high table, deep in urgent conversation with a pinch-faced steward. He sees you, and his relief is quickly swallowed by fresh dismay at your escort, their ragged leathers, their unnatural stillness. He pushes through the throng, his face pale.
"Rachel," he breathes, taking your elbow, steering you slightly away from the glaring eyes of your guards. His grip is tight, anxious. "Are you sure about these… men? They unsettle the retainers. And the way you look…" His gaze sweeps over the straining velvet over your bust, the fullness of your hips accentuated by the gown's cut, the sheer physical presence you now carry. "People are talking."
"Let them talk," you snap, the old arrogance flaring hot and bright. It feels good. Familiar. An anchor. "These men saved me. They stay close. They answer to me." You meet his worried eyes, lowering your voice only slightly. "Father. We need to speak. Privately. Now."
He hesitates, scanning the room, the curious nobles pretending not to stare, the hulking figures of your sons radiating silent menace. "The solar," he mutters finally. "Quickly." He gestures sharply at a pair of his own guards, then at your escort. "Escort Lady Rachel. Remain outside."
You follow him, your velvet skirts whispering against the stone, acutely aware of every eye tracking you. Your sons fall into step behind, ignoring your father’s guards. They move like a pack, surrounding you, pushing aside lingering nobles with small, deliberate movements that aren’t quite shoves but carry the same weight. Galen shoulders past a portly baron without breaking stride. Finnian’s lip curls silently at a startled lady. Ronan’s hand rests near his crude sword hilt. They emanate controlled violence. The great hall falls utterly silent as you pass.
Inside the quiet gloom of your father’s solar, thick tapestries muffling the distant hall’s roar, the tension sharpens. Your father shuts the heavy oak door, turning to face you. His ten guards shift nervously inside the room, hands near their weapons, casting wary looks at your ten silent, amber-eyed shadows. Jaina hovers near the hearth, wringing her hands.
"Rachel," your father begins, his voice strained. "Tell me everything. From the beginning. What happened? Who took you? What… what have you endured?" His eyes drop again to your altered body, the impossible fullness beneath the emerald velvet. He doesn't say the word, but it hangs heavy in the air: Pregnant.
You take a breath. The air feels thin. The ache in your breasts is insistent. You feel a faint dampness starting. Damn it. You straighten, squaring your shoulders, letting the arrogance you were born with wrap around you like a shield. You don’t sit. You stand before him, framed by your monstrous guard, Jaina a silent, fervent witness.
"I was taken," you state, your voice clear and cold. "A year ago. Snatched from the carriage during the storm. By wolves. Not ordinary wolves." You pause, letting the word resonate in the quiet room. "Werewolves. The pack of the Howling Forest."
Your father pales further. His guards tense, one hand going to his sword. Your sons don't react, but their focus intensifies, fixed on Lord Harrington. "Werewolves?" You see the horror dawn in his eyes. "I have heard the rumors and the legends, i cannot believe it is true. " You actually saw them transform?
"No, they can no longer transform. They are stuck after centuries of living in the forrest. " And that is why they needed me." Your father goes white with realization even before you say it. "They held me in their den. Alpha, their leader, intended… breeding stock." The words are harsh, deliberate. "I survived, Father. Not as a victim. As a strategist." You meet his gaze, unflinching. "I saw an opportunity. I made a deal. With Alpha himself."
"A… deal?" Your father looks ill. His guards exchange alarmed glances.
"I accepted his claim," you say, lifting your chin. There's no shame in your voice, only steely resolve. "I became his mate. By choice. " (or at least that is how you were going to tell this story to your father) You place a hand low on your belly, over the velvet where the symbols were painted, where Alpha’s heir grows. "I carry his child. The future Alpha. The key."
Lord Harrington staggers back a step, hitting the edge of his heavy desk. "His child? Rachel, you… you let that beast…?" His voice cracks with revulsion and paternal anguish.
"Survival, Father. Leverage." Your voice is razor-sharp. "It gives me power. Over him. Over the entire pack." You gesture sharply towards your silent sons. "I control them. All of them. Alpha bound them to me. They are my soldiers. My army. Twenty seven of the deadliest warriors this kingdom has ever seen, utterly loyal to me, and that does not include the pack itself" You step closer, the firelight catching the hard glint in your green eyes. "Uncle sits on my birthright. The throne should be mine. You know it." You see the flicker of ambition, long buried, ignite in his own eyes. "With this army, Father, we can take it. We will take it. Support me. Back me when the time comes. Help me reclaim our throne."
Silence crashes down. Thick. Suffocating. Your father stares at you, his face a tumult of emotions – horror, revulsion, disbelief, dawning calculation, a fierce, protective anger warring with the cold spark of dynastic ambition you just ignited. His gaze darts from your face to your belly to the unnatural stillness of the amber-eyed figures flanking you. The guards shift, their knuckles white on their sword hilts. Jaina holds her breath.
"You mean," he finally whispers, the words hoarse, disbelieving, "to use… them… against the King? Your uncle? With… with that… inside you?" He points a trembling finger at your belly.
"With my heir inside me," you correct, the arrogance ringing clear. "And my army at my command. Think, Father. Think of the power. Think of our House ruling. Truly ruling, and if you agree i have another plan to strengthen that army."
He sags against the desk, running a shaking hand over his face. The silence stretches, filled only by the crackle of the hearth and the faint, almost imperceptible growl vibrating in Galen’s chest as he watches Lord Harrington’s guards shift their weight. The air crackles with unspoken threats and impossible choices.
The air crackles with unspoken threats and impossible choices. Your father stares, truly seeing the raw ambition burning in your eyes, the unsettling power radiating from your silent guardians. His face contorts, a battle map of paternal horror and raw political calculation etched deep in the lines around his eyes. He pushes off the desk, shaking his head slowly, his voice a strained rasp barely audible over the fire’s crackle. "Rachel... this is madness. Pure, unadulterated madness. To move against the King... with these... using... that..." He gestures helplessly towards your belly, then sweeps a hand encompassing your sons, his own guards stiffening further. "The risk... the sheer unthinkable nature of it..."
"It’s the only path left to us," you counter, your voice flat, cold steel beneath the velvet. You step closer, forcing him to look into your unwavering gaze, the scent of damp fur and something wilder clinging to you despite Jaina’s floral perfume. "Or did you enjoy groveling to Uncle while he picked over the scraps of our influence? While he let the kingdom rot? Power isn't given, Father. It’s taken. And I have the means to take it. I have forged a path, and I have paid the price a hundred times over. And this" pointing to your belly. "Is your heir, and my son." A fresh, sharp throb pulses low in your abdomen, a visceral reminder of Alpha's claim, of the bargain struck in the forest’s dark heart. You ignore it, focusing only on the flicker of ambition you see warring with his fear. "My army is real. They are here. Now."
He runs a trembling hand through his thinning hair, turning away to stare into the leaping flames. The silence stretches, thick with the tension of ten human guards barely breathing and ten amber-eyed predators radiating silent menace. You see his shoulders slump, the proud Lord Harrington momentarily bowed by the sheer weight of your revelation. Jaina lets out a tiny, choked whimper near the hearth. "It cannot be rushed, Rachel," he finally mutters, still facing the fire, his voice thick with exhaustion. "This... requires planning. Delicate maneuvering. Allies must be sounded out discreetly, forces positioned... Weeks, perhaps months..."
"No." The word cracks through the room like a whip. His guards flinch; your sons shift almost imperceptibly, a low, unified growl vibrating the air like distant thunder. You see Finnian’s hand tighten on his crude axe handle. "It has to be tomorrow father. This is a lightening strike."
He whirls around, eyes wide with disbelief. "Tomorrow? Are you utterly deranged? The King is holding his own feast tonight! There will be guards everywhere!"
"Precisely," you hiss, stepping so close you can smell the stale wine on his breath. The ache in your breasts intensifies, a dull, insistent pressure. "He's complacent. Unprepared. Surrounded by sycophants, not soldiers. My pack moves unseen. My sons will already be inside the walls before they even know what happened." You gesture sharply at Galen, whose lips peel back slightly, revealing unnervingly white, sharp teeth. "We strike while he thinks me a rescued damsel, weak and ruined. While he underestimates you. While the court sleeps off its stupor. The chaos will be our cloak." You lean in, your voice dropping to a fierce whisper only he can hear. "Say the word, and I will begin my work here, and I will grant you and our men power like you cannot imagine."
The color drains completely from his face. He looks from you to the silent, deadly figures flanking you, then back to the guards whose loyalty he suddenly seems to question. The enormity of your demand, the brutal immediacy of it, crushes the air from the room. "But... the risk... Rachel, please... just a few days to—"
"Tonight," you interrupt, the finality absolute. You don’t explain the gnawing dread that this window is closing, that Alpha’s control over the pack frays with every passing moment they are confined, that your own body feels like a timepiece ticking down to some unknown, violent hour. You don’t mention the damp patch you fear is spreading beneath the velvet. Explanations are weakness now. "Decide. Are you Lord Harrington, content with crumbs from the King’s table?" You let the contempt drip into your words. "Or are you the father of a Queen?"
He sags, leaning heavily against the cold stone wall beside the hearth, the firelight painting hollows in his cheeks. He looks old. Defeated. His gaze darts to Jaina, her face pale with terror, then back to you, a stranger in his daughter's skin, radiating terrifying purpose. The silence screams. Your throat feels tight, the weight of command settling like Alpha’s jaws on your neck. You don't breathe, watching the struggle play out across his ravaged face – love warped by fear, loyalty twisted by ambition, the slow, crushing acceptance of a path with no return. Finally, he closes his eyes. A tremor runs through him. His voice, when it comes, is a whisper scraped raw. "What is your plan, I will back you."
The raw surrender in his voice, that whispered "I will back you," tastes like iron and victory on your tongue. You don’t smile. There’s no time for triumph, only execution. "Good," you snap, the word a whip crack in the tense silence. "First step. Now. Gather every fighting man loyal to this House. Every guard, every squire, every stable hand who is of fighting age. Bring them to the great hall. Immediately." Your father stares, bewildered. "Also, fetch the castle physician. Tell him to bring bandages. Lots of bandages. Quickly!"
He hesitates, his eyes flicking nervously towards your motionless sons. "Rachel, what madness is—"
"Do it!" Your voice slices through his protest, leaving no room. The command vibrates with Alpha's silent authority behind it. Galen takes a half-step forward, a low rumble building in his chest. Your father flinches, then nods curtly at one of his own pale-faced guards. "You heard her. Go. All able-bodied men. And summon Master Willem. Hurry!" The guard scrambles out, relief warring with confusion on his face.
You turn your back on your father’s anxious stare, your gaze sweeping the solar. Your eyes land on a heavy tapestry depicting some forgotten Harrington ancestor triumphing over a boar. Perfect. You stride towards it, the emerald velvet pulling tight across your aching breasts. Finnian is instantly at your side, his silent presence a wall of muscle. "This one," you command, grabbing the thick fabric. "Pull it away from the wall." Finnian’s powerful hands grip the edges. With a low grunt and a tearing sound of ancient threads, he rips it partly free, creating a deep, shadowed alcove between the cold stone wall and the hanging cloth. The space is narrow, pitch-dark beyond the first foot.
You gesture for Ronan – leaner, quicker than his bulkier brothers. "Ronan. Behind there. Transform." Your father makes a choked sound, horror dawning. Ronan meets your eyes, a flicker of something feral passing through his amber gaze. Without a word, he ducks into the darkness behind the tapestry. The sounds are immediate, muffled but unmistakable: heavy breathing, the wet crunch of bone and tendon reshaping, the soft ripping of leather. A low, guttural growl vibrates the tapestry fabric. Your father staggers back, hand over his mouth. Jaina smiles broadly as she relizes your plan.
"Listen carefully," you address the room, your voice cold and precise, cutting through the primal sounds behind the cloth. "Every male of this House will line up. One at a time. Each man will put his right hand behind this tapestry. He will hold it steady for three breaths. That is all. It is a test of loyalty. Of nerve." You lock eyes with your father, daring him to object. His face is grey. "After," you continue, turning to the trembling physician who has just scurried in, clutching a leather satchel, "Master Willem, you will bandage their hand. Immediately. Cleanse it. Bind it tightly. Ask no questions. Understand? And most importantly tell no one. Breathing a word of it before my announcement explaining the situation will be considered treason to this house and you will be exicuted."
The physician’s eyes are wide saucers, fixed on the twitching tapestry. He manages a jerky nod, clutching his bag like a shield. "Y-yes, m’lady."
The muffled growl from behind the tapestry intensifies. The heavy oak door creaks open. Confused voices murmur outside. Your father’s guards start ushering men into the crowded solar – hardened soldiers in chainmail, young squires looking bewildered, grizzled grooms smelling of hay and horses. They blink in the dim light, their eyes drawn instantly to the torn tapestry, the palpable tension, your hulking guard, and your unnerving presence.
"Silence!" The command rings out. The murmurs die instantly. "Form a line," you order, gesturing sharply. "House males first. Starting with you, Father." You see the trapped terror in his eyes, the sheer disbelief that his own daughter commands this obscenity. He looks at the tapestry, then at you, then at the physician clutching bandages. His throat works. "Rachel..." he rasps, a final plea.
"Your loyalty," you state, the words icy. "Your hand. Now." The low growl behind the tapestry rises in pitch, a hungry sound. Your own sons stand like statues, amber eyes fixed on the forming line, their stillness more terrifying than any movement. The dampness beneath your bodice is spreading, a cool counterpoint to the fire in your belly. You ignore it. This is the crucible.
Your father takes a shuddering breath, the weight of his decision pressing down visibly. He steps forward, his movements stiff. He pauses before the dark gap in the tapestry. The growl is a living thing now, vibrating the stone underfoot. He swallows hard, his face pale as parchment. With a visible tremor, he slowly, slowly, extends his right arm into the impenetrable blackness behind the heavy cloth. His knuckles are white. The silence in the room is absolute, broken only by ragged breathing and the wet, hungry sound from the shadows.
