Chapter 19: Chapter 19
The heavy groan of the splintered door echoes in the cavernous throne room, swallowed almost instantly by the sharp tang of fresh blood and the choked silence of absolute terror. Alpha fills the ragged opening, fur matted dark crimson, claws dripping. Behind him, sprawled across the gilt and marble entrance hall, lie what’s left of the king’s personal guard. Eight men. Moaning. Crying. Missing hands, chunks ripped from throats, limbs bent at impossible angles. The polished stone glistens wetly under the flickering torchlight. It smells like a slaughterhouse.
You step through the ruin Alpha made to open the throne room door for you from the inside. The designers never thought someone would be able to climb in through a high window and drop into the chamber. Jaina a silent, wide-eyed shadow at your shoulder. Your silk gown, pristine moments ago in the courtyard, brushes lightly against the mangled arm of a guardsman still twitching on the threshold. You don’t flinch. The gore is simply… inconvenient. A necessary mess for the cleaners. Later.
The throne room itself is a tableau of frozen horror. Courtiers – lords and ladies decked in velvets and jewels for the interrupted ball – are pressed back against the tapestried walls or huddled beneath the long feasting tables overturned in panic. Wine pools like blood on the floor. Platters of half-eaten roast fowl lie scattered. The air, thick with the scent of fear and spilled perfume, crackles with unvoiced screams.
At the far end, atop the dais, sits King Reynard. Your uncle. His plump face is the color of sour milk beneath his golden circlet. His hands, gripping the massive carved arms of the throne, tremble violently. The Archbishop, a frail man in rich vestments, stands frozen beside him, clutching his holy symbol like a child’s toy. A handful of pale-faced royal guards form a shaky semi-circle before the dais, spears wavering. Their eyes are locked on Alpha, on the carnage at the door. They don’t look ready to die. They look like they already have.
"Lady Rachel?" The King’s voice is a thin, reedy whisper that somehow carries. "Niece? What… what madness is this?" He stares at your transformed father, Lord Harrington, who pads beside Marcus just behind you. Lord Harrington’s fine clothes hang in tatters, dark fur bristling through, his muzzle stained red. Marcus snarls softly, amber eyes scanning the cowering courtiers with unnerving hunger. "Harrington? Marcus? By the Gods!"
"Not madness, Uncle," you say, your voice clear and calm, cutting through the thick silence like a bell. You take another step forward, the click of your heel on stone unnaturally loud. The guards flinch. "Just a change in management. I believe..." you gesture gracefully towards the ornate monstrosity he sits upon, "that’s my chair."
A collective gasp ripples through the room. A duchess faints dramatically into the arms of a baron, who looks like he might join her.
"Your chair?" Reynard sputters, pushing himself up, anger momentarily overriding fear. "You dare? You bring… monsters into my hall? You turn your own kin into… into beasts?!" He points a shaking finger at your father and brother. Harrington lets out a low, defensive whine. Marcus snaps his jaws at the air.
Alpha rumbles beside you, a sound like boulders grinding deep underground. His dark gaze fixes on the king. "Throne… hers." His words are thick, guttural, but utterly certain. "Blood… right. Power… take." He takes a single, deliberate step forward, claws scraping stone. The royal guards shuffle backwards, their spears clattering impotently.
"You see?" you smile, a chilling, serene expression. "Even the wolves understand lineage. I am the eldest heir of my father, your twin brother. He was never an ambitious man so even though he was born first he allowed you to asend the throne. Your reign, Uncle, is an administrative error. One I’m rectifying. Tonight."
"Please, Lady Rachel!" the King’s voice cracks, desperation turning it shrill. He clutches at the Archbishop’s sleeve. "Think! You have been corrupted by the beasts who captured you. You have gone mad. This violence… this sacrilege!" The Archbishop murmurs a feeble prayer, eyes squeezed shut.
Resting a hand lightly on the slight curve of your stomach beneath the silk, "here lies the future king of this land. A strong and powerful future. He will be born a prince. A king. With the power of the old blood werewolves flowing in his veins." You let your gaze sweep the terrified court. "Unlike the weakling line that currently decays upon that throne."
"You consort with demons!" Reynard shrieks, losing his last shred of composure. Spittle flies from his lips. "You whored yourself to that beast to get his spawn!" He jabs a finger at Alpha.
The air chills instantly. Alpha doesn’t growl. He goes utterly, terrifyingly still. The low thrum of power radiating from him intensifies, pressing down on the room like a physical weight. Even the moans from the doorway cease. Your smile vanishes, replaced by glacial hardness.
"Careful, Uncle," your voice drops, soft but razor-edged. "You speak of my consort. My Alpha. The father of your future king. That," you nod slightly towards Alpha, "is treason."
Alpha moves. Not with the blurred speed of the hunt, but with terrifying, deliberate force. He crosses the space between the doorway and the dais in five massive strides. The royal guards don't even raise their spears. They stumble aside, tripping over each other in their haste to escape. The Archbishop whimpers, sinking to his knees.
Reynard scrambles backwards, tripping over the base of the throne, falling heavily onto the seat. "N-no! Stay back! Guards! Protect your King!" His cries are desperate, pathetic.
Alpha reaches the dais. He towers over the cowering king. He doesn’t roar. He doesn’t snarl theatrically. He simply reaches out one massive, blood-crusted paw. It closes around King Reynard’s throat. Lifts him clear off the throne, legs kicking uselessly. The golden circlet clatters to the stone floor.
The King makes a horrible, wet gagging sound. His eyes bulge, fixed on Alpha’s impassive, feral face.
You step forward, climbing the dais steps calmly, side-stepping the circlet. You reach the vacated throne. The wood is warm where Reynard sat. You run your fingers over the intricate, carved lions on the armrests. Centuries of power humming beneath your touch. Of course they will have to be changed to wolves.
"Clean it," you say to Jaina, without looking back. Your voice is flat. Commanding. "It’s sticky."
Behind you, Alpha gives a single, sharp twist of his wrist. A sickening, wet crack echoes through the silent throne room, louder than any bell. The King’s kicking ceases instantly. His head lolls at an impossible angle.
Alpha drops the body. It crumples bonelessly at the foot of the throne, a heap of velvet and mortality. A dark stain spreads on the marble.
You don’t look at it. You smooth your skirts. Turn. Survey the silent, petrified court. Lords tremble. Ladies sob silently into their hands. Your father lowers his head slightly. Marcus lets out a soft, satisfied chuff. Jaina scurries forward with a damp cloth she produced seemingly from nowhere, beginning to wipe the throne’s seat with trembling but efficient hands.
"Much better," you murmur, watching her. Then you raise your voice, letting it ring with absolute authority in the deathly quiet. "Kneel."
For a heartbeat, no one moves. Then Lord Harrington, your transformed father, drops heavily to his forelegs, lowering his shaggy head. Marcus follows suit beside him. Jaina drops instantly into a deep, prostrate curtsy at the foot of the dais.
One by one, like dominoes falling, the terrified nobility of the realm sink to their knees. Velvet and silk rustle against blood-slicked marble. Heads bow low. Whispers of "Your Majesty" ripple through the crowd, choked but unmistakable.
You watch them kneel. Your court. Your subjects. Finally. You step over your uncle’s cooling body without a glance. You turn. Lower yourself onto the freshly cleaned throne. The wood is cool now under your hands. Solid. Real.
Alpha walks slowly around the dais. He stops beside the throne. Not kneeling. Not submitting. Standing. Guarding. Partnering. His dark fur is stark against the gleaming gold and polished wood. His muzzle is still wet. He meets your gaze. A silent understanding passes between you. It’s done. The throne is yours. The hunt is over. The reign begins.
The silence in the throne room is absolute now, save for the crackle of torches and the ragged breathing of the conquered. You lean back against the ancient wood. Let a slow, cold smile touch your lips. The scent of blood, sweat, and fear is the perfume of victory. You breathe it in.
The silence hangs thick, heavy with the iron tang of blood and the sour stink of terror. Your new subjects' breathing rasps like dry leaves scraping stone. Your gaze sweeps over the bowed heads, the trembling shoulders pressed against tapestries depicting your family’s former glory. It’s pathetic. Satisfying. Alpha’s low growl rumbles beside the throne, a constant vibration felt in your bones. He nudges the dead king’s leg with a massive paw, a dismissive shove. The body slides a few inches, velvet scraping wetly.
Your eyes lock onto the Archbishop. He’s still on his knees where he sank, clutching his silver sunburst pendant like it’s a shield. His aged face is parchment-white, eyes wide and unblinking, fixed on the dark stain spreading beneath Reynard's neck. "Archbishop." Your voice slices the quiet. It’s not loud, but it carries, sharp as a whip crack. He flinches violently. "Approach."
He doesn’t move. Just stares, lips moving soundlessly. Praying? Or just broken?
"Now." The single word carries the weight of the throne room. Alpha shifts his weight, claws clicking on marble, a deliberate, threatening punctuation.
The old man scrambles. He stumbles forward, nearly tripping over his own robes, catching himself on the dais steps. He stares up at you, then at Alpha, then back at you, pure animal fear radiating from him. Jaina has finished wiping the throne seat; she retreats silently to stand near your father’s massive, shaggy flank.
"Your Holiness," you begin, the title dripping with icy amusement. You gesture languidly towards the golden circlet lying discarded near the king’s body. Jaina darts forward, scoops it up with surprising speed, and presents it to you silently. You take it. It’s heavier than it looks. Cold. "This crown," you say, turning it in your hands, letting the torchlight catch the dull gold. "It belonged to a weak king. A foolish king." You glance at the corpse. "It needs sanctification. A new purpose. Crown me."
The Archbishop’s mouth opens.Closes. He swallows, a thick, audible gulp. "My... My Lady Rachel... the rites... the consecration... it is not... the king must be..." He trails off, his gaze flicking again to Alpha, whose lip lifts in a silent snarl, revealing teeth still stained pink.
"You have two choices, Bishop," you say, leaning forward slightly, your voice dropping to a chilling murmur only he and Alpha can truly hear. "Place this crown upon my head, pronounce me Queen Rachel, First of That Name, rightful ruler by blood and conquest... or join my uncle in his eternal audience." You nod towards the cooling body. "Your god won't save you from what waits out there in the dark, beyond these walls. I am the only salvation this kingdom has left. Crown me."
He whimpers. A high, thin sound. His hands shake violently as he takes the circlet from you. He fumbles, almost drops it. Straightening his spine with a visible effort that looks like it might break him, he raises the circlet above your fiery hair. His voice, when it comes, is a cracked whisper at first, trembling. "By... by the power invested... in the Holy See..." It gains a fraction of strength, born of pure survival instinct. "...I hereby consecrate and crown... Rachel of House Harrington... Queen of Aldermere. Long... long may she reign."
The cold gold settles onto your brow. It’s a perfect fit. A shiver, not of cold, but of pure, intoxicating power, runs through you. You feel Alpha’s approving rumble vibrate the throne itself. Below, the kneeling nobles shift, a rustle of silk and fear. They saw. They heard. The deed is sanctified, however shakily.
You rise. The circlet feels weightless now. You turn to face the cowed assembly. The flickering torchlight catches the gold, your hair, the hard glint in your green eyes. "Hear me!" Your voice rings out, clear, commanding, filling the vast space. The crown lends it undeniable authority. "I am your Queen. Not merely the Queen of Aldermere. I am the Wolf Queen."
A collective intake of breath. Eyes dart to Alpha, to your father and brother hunched like living gargoyles beside the dais, to the carnage at the door.
"My lineage," you continue, pacing slowly along the dais edge, your gaze sweeping across their terrified faces, "bears the mark of the Old Blood. My son," your hand rests possessively on the slight curve beneath your silk gown, "your future king, carries that power within him. He will be born strong. He will rule stronger. And he will not be alone."
You pause. Let the silence build. Let them wonder, fear, hope? "The gift that flows in my veins, that protects this throne, that secured this throne..." You gesture towards Alpha, a nod of acknowledgment. "...is not meant for me alone. It is the boon of my reign. My first act as your Queen."
Alpha shifts, his massive head turning to survey the room, his nostrils flaring as if scenting their reactions – fear, yes, but beneath it, a desperate, morbid curiosity. Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac, even when it wears fangs.
"For the next month," you announce, your voice dropping slightly, becoming almost intimate despite echoing through the chamber, "this gift is offered. To the noble houses of Aldermere. To those men worthy of strength. Worthy of protection." Your gaze lingers on a few younger lords, visibly trembling but unable to look away. "Any nobleman in this room, anyone of rank and blood, may present himself. He may receive the Bite. He may join the New Blood."
Murmurs ripple through the crowd now. Disbelief. Horror? Or... anticipation? You see it in the widened eyes of a burly baron near the front, his knuckles white as he grips the overturned table beside him. In the speculative gleam in the eyes of a lean, ambitious count who’d always been too low in the old king’s favor.
"The Bite grants power," you state plainly. "Strength. Resilience. A connection to the old ways. And," you let the word hang, the most potent promise, the most terrifying lure, "it grants the ability... in time, guided by the blood of your Queen and her Alpha... to Turn back. To wear the face of a man again, while holding the strength of the wolf within." You see your father’s ears prick forward. Marcus lets out a soft, yearning whine. The hope is palpable now, cutting through the fear like a knife.
"But," your voice snaps, sharp as a breaking bone. The murmurs die instantly. Alpha lifts his head, a low growl building in his chest, resonating through the floor. "This gift flows only from the Crown. From me. These are the laws. The only laws that matter now." You hold up one finger. "First: Any wolf – New Blood or Old – who makes another werewolf without my direct permission? Death." You snap your fingers. The sound echoes. "Second: Any human who seeks the gift, who seeks the Bite, except through this sanctioned offering, through me? Death." Another snap. "Third: Any who harms a wolf under my protection? Death. Any who attempts to usurp the Alpha’s place or mine? Death. These are not suggestions. They are the foundations of the new order. Obey, and thrive under the Wolf Queen’s protection. Defy," you glance meaningfully at the ruin near the doorway, at your uncle’s body, "and join the discarded remnants of the old world."
The silence that follows is absolute. Thick. Charged. The scent of blood is fading, replaced by the ozone crackle of pure, unadulterated power and the raw, animal fear of those realizing the cage door has slammed shut. And also… the faint, coppery tang of ambition.
A young lord, barely out of his teens, face pale but jaw set, takes an unsteady step forward from the huddle near the back wall. His eyes are fixed on Alpha, wide with terror, but also with a desperate, burning need. He opens his mouth. Closes it. Swallows hard.
