Chapter 3: In the morning light
The chill of the stream bites deeper than any insult you’ve ever endured. Kneeling on the slick, moss-covered rocks, the icy water swirls around your waist, numbing your legs and leaching the last traces of warmth from your core. You scrub mechanically at your arms, the once-smooth skin now a map of fading scratches and purple bruises. The remnants of your silk shift cling transparently, offering no modesty against the cool air or the watchful eyes. Dawn filters weakly through the dense canopy overhead, turning the forest into a lattice of grey light and deep shadow. The air smells of damp stone, decaying leaves, and wet fur.
Beside you, Rose splashes with exaggerated vigor, her movements sharp and efficient. Her own simple servant's dress, far more practical than your ruined finery, is soaked through. She keeps glancing towards the bank where Delta, a younger wolf with grey-flecked brown fur and surprisingly alert amber eyes, sits on his haunches, watchful but relaxed. His presence is less oppressive than Alpha’s sheer, terrifying mass, but it’s a leash nonetheless. Rose catches Delta’s eye and offers a hesitant, overly bright smile. "The water is wonderfully refreshing, isn't it?" she calls out, her voice artificially cheerful. "Cleans everything right up." Her gaze flicks pointedly towards your barely covered form. A smirk tugs at the corner of her mouth. Revenge served cold, indeed.
You ignore her. The humiliation of being paraded to this stream under guard, the indignity of washing in freezing water while watched by a beast and your treacherous maid, is a fresh layer of grime no water can cleanse. You focus on the sting of the cold, the scrape of grit against your skin. Survival. Play the part. Three nights. You dunk your fiery hair back, letting the icy current pull the worst of the mud and leaf litter from the tangled mass. When you surface, gasping, Rose is talking to Delta again, her voice a simpering murmur you can’t quite catch. He chuffs softly, a sound that might be amusement. Your hands ball into fists underwater.
A low vibration resonates through the ground before you even hear him. The air shifts, grows heavier, saturated with the scent of pine, power, and raw, wild musk. Alpha pads silently to the water’s edge, his midnight fur sleek and damp. He carries something large and dark in his massive jaws. Deer haunch. Freshly killed. He drops it onto the bank with a wet thud, the impact making Rose jump and go silent. His molten gaze sweeps over the scene: Delta on watch, Rose waist-deep and suddenly still, you kneeling in the stream, water sluicing down your bare shoulders, your green eyes meeting his with carefully crafted resignation.
He doesn’t look at Rose. His focus narrows, pins you. A low, guttural sound rumbles in his chest. Not a growl. A summons. A command. "Come"
Jaina appears as if conjured, stepping out from behind a thick curtain of ferns. Her bare feet are muddy, her worn clothes damp at the hem. "Out, little noble," she says, her voice flat. "He brought breakfast. For you." She ignores Rose entirely.
Shivering, you rise unsteadily from the water. The cold air hits your wet skin like a slap. You wade towards the bank, acutely aware of your near-nakedness, the water’s reluctant release. Rose’s eyes bore into your back, sharp with envy and malice. You climb onto the bank, dripping, gooseflesh rising instantly. You reach for the ragged scrap of cloth Jaina holds out – not even a proper towel, just rough homespun. It smells of lye and damp.
Alpha watches, unblinking, as you dry yourself with clumsy, trembling hands. He nudges the crude basket full of editble plants and berries from the forrest. You are surprised that these delicacies were in the forrest, his massive clawed hand also give s you a satchel full of jerky and bread.
"Eat," Jaina says, her tone matter-of-fact. "He wants you strong."
The rough cloth scratches your damp skin as you wrap it around your shoulders, shivering despite the cool morning air. Alpha’s massive head tilts, those unnerving, intelligent eyes locked on yours, ignoring the offered food completely. He shifts his weight, the movement silent despite his size, a low, grinding sound emerging from his throat – words struggling against a muzzle and vocal cords not quite human. "Wa...lls." The word is thick, guttural, a predator trying to speak.
Jaina steps closer, her expression unreadable. "He asks about the walls of your uncle’s castle, Lady Rachel," she translates, her voice calm, practical. "The outer walls. How tall?" She gestures vaguely upwards with a weathered hand.
You stare, momentarily stunned into silence. Why would a beast care about architecture? The sheer absurdity wars with the chilling intelligence in Alpha’s gaze. Your aristocratic disdain flares. "Why? Planning a renovation?" you snap, pulling the rough cloth tighter. "Forty feet. Stone. Solid." You toss the numbers out carelessly, a reflex of boredom from countless tedious court discussions. Alpha’s ears flick forward, sharp points against the dark fur. A low rumble vibrates his chest.
"Thick?" Jaina prompts, watching Alpha’s subtle reactions.
"Ten feet thick at the base," you retract, the technical detail slipping out before you can stop it. You sound like your father’s chief engineer. Annoying. "Impenetrable." You add the last word with defiant pride, lifting your chin.
Alpha snorts, a puff of warm, meat-scented air hitting your face. His head tilts again, considering. "In...ner?" The word is clearer this time, sharper. He’s remembering.
"An inner curtain wall?" You frown, the cold momentarily forgotten as your mind maps the familiar layout. "Yes. Surrounding the keep. Twenty-five feet high, perhaps?" You shrug, trying to regain nonchalance. "Slightly less imposing. Still sufficient against anything normal." The implication hangs in the air, heavy as Alpha’s presence.
His lips pull back slightly, revealing the glint of enormous, yellowed fangs. Not quite a snarl. Not quite a smile. A grimace of understanding. "Sol...diers." He forces the word out, his massive chest heaving with the effort. "Standing."
Jaina nods. "The King's standing army. How many?"
Now you hesitate. This isn't idle court gossip anymore; this feels like... assessment. Tactical assessment. The chill seeps back into your bones, deeper than the stream water. You glance at Alpha, at the brutal power coiled in his hybrid form, then at Jaina’s impassive face, and finally at Rose, lurking near Delta. Rose’s eyes gleam with a nasty kind of satisfaction, watching you trapped. You swallow, pride warring with a sudden, sharp fear. "Two thousand," you mutter, lowering your voice. "Maybe a little more. Foot and horse."
Alpha makes a sound deep in his chest. Disappointment? Contempt? "Le...vy." It’s almost a growl.
"Levies?" Jaina clarifies. "If called? In times of war?"
You feel queasy. You’re describing your uncle’s defenses to the creature who dragged you through thorns. "Five thousand," you admit grudgingly. "Peasants, mostly. With pitchforks. Barely trained." The dismissive words taste sour.
Alpha stares at you for a long, silent moment. The forest sounds recede – the birdsong, the rustling leaves, even the distant howls seem muted. Only his slow, powerful breathing fills the space between you. His molten eyes hold yours, stripping away your defiance layer by layer. You see the calculation there, the burning ambition, the desperate need. This isn't just curiosity.
He leans in, his massive head lowering until his breath ghosts hot and damp against your ear. His voice, when it comes, is a low, gravelly rasp, each word labored but chillingly clear: "When... we... come... one... of... us... will... be... inside."
The implication hits you like a physical blow. Your breath catches. He isn't just planning an attack. He's planning betrayal. From within.
Alpha turns abruptly, his dark fur a shadow melting into the deeper gloom beneath the trees, leaving you trembling on the bank with the forgotten deer haunch at your feet and Rose's smirk burning into your back.
Alpha’s departure leaves a vacuum filled only by the dripping water from your shift and Rose’s poisonous stare. The deer haunch lies forgotten, a raw, bloody contrast to the mossy bank. You pull the scratchy homespun tighter, its rough weave grating against your chilled skin. Jaina just watches, silent, her expression unreadable as the forest stones.
"Well, your ladyship," Rose’s voice cuts through the stillness, saccharine and sharp as a dagger. She wades out of the stream, water sheeting off her servant’s dress, clinging to her slender frame. Her eyes, usually downcast, now hold a glint of triumph as she looks at you, then deliberately towards Delta. "Looks like you’re not the only one Alpha finds… interesting." She pushes her damp hair back with a confidence you’ve never seen in her before.
"You forget your place, Rose," you snap, the automatic reflex of command sparking, though it feels hollow here, surrounded by trees and wolves. Your throat is tight.
"My place?" Rose laughs, a brittle, unfamiliar sound. "My place was scrubbing your floors and enduring your pinches. Now?" She gestures vaguely around the clearing, at Delta watching intently, at the dense woods. "My place is whatever I make it." She walks towards Delta, her movements deliberate, swaying slightly. "Delta, right? That’s what Jaina called you?" Her voice softens, becomes almost conversational. "This forest is something else. Wild. Different rules."
Delta’s amber eyes track her, his head cocked with wolfish curiosity. A low chuff escapes him, not unfriendly. He shifts his massive weight, fur gleaming wetly in the weak light. Jaina frowns slightly, a flicker of disapproval crossing her face.
"Yeah, Delta," Rose confirms, stopping just before him. She’s close enough for you to see the faint tremor in her hands, quickly masked. "It’s… exciting. Strong." She looks back at you, her expression hardening. "Stronger than useless silks and empty titles." She takes a breath, squaring her shoulders. "Alpha wants someone… useful. Someone who understands new rules."
Panic, cold and sharp, pricks at you. "Rose, don’t be absurd," you hiss, stepping forward, but Jaina’s hand touches your arm, surprisingly firm, holding you back. Her eyes warn: Don’t interfere.
Rose ignores you, focusing entirely on Delta. Her voice drops, intimate and clear. "Tell Alpha… tell him Rose offers herself." She swallows, lifting her chin defiantly. "Willingly. For the pack. To be strong. To serve. Since she won't." Her gaze flicks towards you, pure venom. "Since Lady Rachel is too proud for anything real."
Silence crashes down. The forest seems to hold its breath. Delta stares at Rose, his intelligent eyes wide with surprise, then flicking to you, then back to Rose. He lets out a soft, confused whine. Jaina’s grip on your arm tightens, her knuckles white. Her lips are pressed into a thin line.
You feel dizzy. The rough wool scratches your neck. The smell of damp earth and wet fur fills your nose. Rose stands there, small and defiant before the hulking Delta, her offer hanging in the air like a challenge. Your stomach churns. This wasn’t part of the three-night game. This was sabotage.
Delta doesn’t move for a long moment. Then, slowly, deliberately, he lifts his massive muzzle towards the canopy. A single, sharp, echoing howl rips through the trees, startling birds into flight. It’s not a hunting cry. It’s a summons. An announcement.
Alpha’s massive form materializes from the shadows between two ancient oaks almost instantly, as if he’d been waiting just beyond sight. His molten eyes sweep the scene – Delta standing alert, Rose trembling slightly but resolute before him, Jaina restraining you. He pads forward, silent despite his size, the power radiating off him palpable.
He stops beside Delta, dwarfing the younger wolf. His gaze fixes on Rose, intense, unblinking. He sniffs the air near her, a deep, rumbling inhalation. Rose flinches but holds her ground, meeting his fierce stare. "Offers?" Alpha’s voice is a deep, guttural scrape, the word heavy with meaning.
Delta gives a single, sharp nod towards Rose. "Yes. Willing."
Alpha’s massive head tilts. Those uncanny eyes study Rose’s face, her posture, the defiant set of her jaw. The silence stretches, thick with tension. Your heart hammers against your ribs. Jaina’s fingers are like iron on your arm.
Alpha’s gaze flicks to you for a fraction of a second – a glance that holds contempt, perhaps, or cold calculation. Then it snaps back to Rose. He takes one final step, looming over her completely, blocking out the weak light. His dark muzzle dips close to her ear. You see her tense, her eyes wide with primal fear she can’t hide. His low growl vibrates the very air. "Good."
He turns, his dark fur brushing against Rose’s soaked dress as he moves past her. He doesn’t look back. "Come," he commands, the single word directed at Delta, but heavy with implication for the clearing’s occupants. Delta gives Rose one last, lingering look, then lopes after his Alpha, disappearing into the gloom.
Rose sags slightly, a shaky breath escaping her. She turns to face you, her expression a mix of terror, exhilaration, and vicious satisfaction. "See, my lady?" she whispers, her voice trembling only slightly. "I make my place."
Jaina releases your arm. "Back to the den," she says, her voice flat, devoid of emotion. "Both of you. Now." She gestures sharply towards the path Alpha took. The implications of Rose’s offer, of Alpha’s "Good," hang thick and suffocating in the misty air. The game just changed.
