Chapter 18: THe stinging bite

The last bandage is tied. The air in the Great Hall hangs thick and stagnant, saturated with the metallic tang of fresh blood overlaying the fading aromas of roasted boar and spilled wine. Men clutch at bandaged forearms, their faces pale, sweat beading on brows despite the chill creeping in from the stone walls. Whimpers and low groans punctuate the heavy silence, a stark contrast to the boisterous feast that had filled the hall hours before. Torchlight gutters, casting long, dancing shadows that make the watching tapestries seem to writhe.

Your father, Lord Harrington, sits slumped in his heavy chair, cradling his own bandaged hand. The physician fusses nearby, but the Lord’s gaze is fixed on the floor, a mixture of horror and dawning comprehension etched onto his features. Beside him, your brother Marcus, always the dutiful son, stands rigid. His bandage is pristine, tied tight over the sharp puncture marks just visible beneath the linen. His eyes, wide with shock, flick between you and the hulking, shadowed forms of your sons – your other sons – lurking near the massive hearth or behind the heavy tapestries. You catch the glint of amber eyes in the gloom.

A low whine escapes one of the younger knights. Someone else retches quietly into a hastily offered bucket.

You step forward, the rustle of your silk gown impossibly loud in the sudden hush. All eyes snap to you – fearful, accusatory, questioning. You meet them with a gaze as cool and sharp as emerald ice. A thrill, hot and fierce, surges through you. This is power. Raw. Unfiltered. No longer needing courtly graces or your uncle’s favor.

"Good," you say, your voice ringing clear, cutting through the low moans. "The first step is done."

Your father jerks his head up. "Rachel," he rasps, his voice rough. "What… what madness is this? What have you done to us?"

"Ensured our future, Father," you reply smoothly, stepping closer to the center of the dais. You let your hand rest lightly on the slight swell beneath your gown. "All of you. Listen now."

You sweep your gaze across the assembled men – knights, guards, stewards, all marked now. All bound. "You have been blessed," you announce, the word dripping with irony they don’t yet grasp. "By the bite of the new blood. My bloodline."

Murmurs ripple through the crowd. Confusion wars with the lingering pain.

"Blessed?" Marcus echoes, his voice tight.

"Indeed." You draw yourself up, radiating the imperious confidence that once commanded ballrooms, now weaponized for a far bloodier game. "Tomorrow night is the full moon. And under its light, you will change. Fur. Fang. Strength unlike any you’ve known."

A collective gasp. Panic flares in dozens of eyes.

"Change?" a grizzled sergeant stammers. "Into… monsters?"

"We are not monsters!" The guttural growl comes from behind the largest tapestry near the hearth. Alpha steps forward, from a back room where your sons had let him in from a wondow, his immense hybrid form dwarfing the firelight. His dark fur bristles, those intelligent, predatory eyes scanning the cowering men. "We are Pack. Stronger. Faster." He lifts his massive paw-like hand, claws gleaming. "Tonight… gift. Pain now. Power comes."

His words, though clipped, land with brutal weight. You see the understanding dawn – the sharp pain they felt wasn’t just an injury; it was a transformation. A curse they’d call it, if they dared.

You step in, reclaiming the narrative. "Alpha speaks truly. The bite grants you the strength of the wolf. But," you pause, letting the tension coil tighter, "there is another gift. The blood coursing through my veins, the blood of my unborn son –" you press your hand more firmly against your stomach, "– carries ancient power. The power to return. You will change under the full moon. But come dawn…" you let a slow, deliberate smile touch your lips, "…you will be men once more. Yourselves. Whole. Until you learn mastery. Until I decree otherwise."

The relief is palpable. Men slump slightly, shoulders relaxing marginally. The horror of permanent monstrosity recedes, replaced by the terrifying, but finite, prospect of one night of savagery.

"Tomorrow night," you continue, your voice dropping to a conspiratorial murmur that still carries, "that strength will be unleashed. Not against each other. Not against this keep." You let your gaze sweep over them again, commanding their attention. "We march. Under the moon. We take the King's castle. We take the capital."

Silence. Thick, absolute silence. Even the groaning stops. Men stare at you, dumbfounded. Your father gapes, colour draining anew from his face. Marcus takes a half-step back, shaking his head slowly.

"My uncle," you state, the word sharp with contempt, "is weak. His court is rotten. He sits upon a throne that should be mine. By blood. By right." You raise your chin, the torchlight catching the fierce determination in your eyes. "And now, by strength."

You gesture towards Alpha and the other shadows stirring at the edges of the hall. "My Pack stands ready. My Pack, born of my union with Alpha." You don't flinch at the admission. It’s a fact. A weapon. "And now, you all are part of it. My army." You let the word hang, heavy with implication. "My loyal wolves. And may the God's have mercy on those of that castle because those bitten by the old blood and survive, which i hear is unlikely will be permanently wolves. And so yes, as the people of my childhood i have given you this boon."

Jaina emerges from behind a pillar, her worn face serene, almost beatific. She offers a shallow, submissive curtsy in your direction before moving to gently adjust the bandage on a young squire’s arm, murmuring soft, reassuring words he doesn’t seem to hear.

"You will fight," you command, your voice hardening. "You will tear down the gates. You will howl victory. And you will place me on the throne." You pause, letting the image sink in – you, draped in royal silks, seated where your uncle presides. "I will be Queen. Not just of men." You sweep your hand out, encompassing the hall, Alpha, your sons, the bandaged men. "I will be your Queen. The Wolf Queen. And my son," your hand rests protectively on your belly again, "your future King, born of the old blood, will bear the mark of our strength. This night, this bite, is the beginning of a new dynasty. My dynasty. And you…" you stare down at the shocked, pale faces, "…you are blessed to be its first soldiers."

The silence stretches. No cheers. Only the crackle of the fire and the ragged breathing of men grappling with their new, monstrous reality. Fear wars with a dazed, reluctant awe. They look to their Lord, but Harrington remains slumped, staring at his bandaged hand as if it belongs to someone else. They look to Marcus, whose jaw is clenched, his eyes wide and fixed on you, a tumult of emotions warring within them – shock, betrayal, a terrifying dawning of ambition? Jaina smiles gently at the squire, her touch soothing.

You stand tall amidst the stunned silence, the firelight casting a long, commanding shadow across the blood-spattered floor. The first move is played. The pieces are set. Tomorrow, under the full moon, the hunt begins. The throne awaits.

The stunned silence in the Great Hall stretches, thick with the lingering scent of blood, fear, and disbelief. It breaks only with the ragged breaths of the bitten men and the crackle of the dying fire. You let it linger, savoring the palpable shift in the air – the birth pangs of your new reality. Alpha’s low growl from the shadows, more vibration than sound, cuts through the tension like a blade. Time to move.

"Enough gawking," you snap, your voice cracking like a whip. The men flinch. "Dawn approaches. We have a castle to reach before moonrise. Move your feet!" You gesture sharply towards the main doors. "Now! Horses! Provisions! Anything you can carry quickly. Leave the silver, obviously." A nervous ripple goes through the crowd. "Marcus," you command your brother, who still looks pale and stricken, "organize them. Father," you turn to the slumped Lord Harrington, your tone marginally softer but brooking no refusal, "you ride beside me. Comfort is a luxury we abandoned last night."

The great hall erupts into frantic, clumsy motion. Men stumble over each other, bandaged arms held awkwardly, faces etched with a mixture of terror and dazed obedience. Servants, woken by the commotion, peek fearfully from doorways, only to shrink back at the sight of the massive, dark-furred form of your son silently herding the men out. Jaina moves among the chaos, surprisingly efficient, offering a quiet word here, helping adjust a hastily packed bag there. She catches your eye for a moment, offering a faint, supportive smile that feels alien amidst the burgeoning panic. You give a curt nod, then stride towards the main doors, Alpha falling into step beside you, his powerful presence a dark pillar against the greying pre-dawn light filtering through the high windows. The throne feels impossibly close.

The forest path is narrow, choked with undergrowth that snags at cloaks and boots. The air, cool and damp, carries the scent of pine, earth, and rising sweat – mostly human sweat, laced with fear. Your retinue moves with grim urgency: a column of pale-faced men on horseback, their bandages stark white against dark riding leathers, interspersed with the hulking, silent forms of your old-blood sons padding effortlessly alongside. Alpha walks near you, his head constantly swiveling, ears pricked, a low, constant rumble in his chest like distant thunder. Your father rides stiffly beside you, his face a mask of shock and betrayal, eyes fixed straight ahead. Marcus rides just behind, his knuckles white on the reins, jaw clenched so tight you can see the muscle jumping. Jaina follows on a sturdy pony, humming softly to herself, seemingly oblivious to the tension.

"Keep the pace," you call back, your voice cutting through the forest quiet. "Slacken, and we lose the light. Lose the light, and the moon finds you scattered in the woods." A collective shudder runs through the men. You see a knight stifle a whimper, clutching his bandaged arm. "Focus on the destination," you add, your tone deliberately lighter, almost conversational. "Imagine the warm hearths. The King’s best wine. Think of the look on dear Uncle Reynard’s face when we stroll into his precious throne room." Marcus grunts something unintelligible.

"First change… hard," Alpha rumbles beside you, his voice rough stones grating together. He looks at the trembling knight. "Pain. Noise. Smells… overwhelming. Fight the beast. Remember the man." He taps his massive chest with a claw. "Men… stronger than instinct. Sometimes." The knight nods jerkily, looking terrified but marginally less alone. Alpha’s gaze sweeps the column. "Kill only… necessary. Pack grows. Conquer. Not… slaughter." His words, though limited, carry weight. You see a few men straighten slightly, a flicker of grim determination replacing pure terror. Conquer, not slaughter. A practical command, you tell yourself. Loose wolves are messy wolves.

The day wears on, the sun climbing then beginning its slow descent, casting long, distorted shadows through the dense canopy. The forest thins gradually, replaced by scrubland, then cultivated fields. The air carries distant sounds now – the lowing of cattle, the faint clang of a distant smithy. The capital's sprawl comes into view, its high stone walls stark against the setting sun. Your pulse quickens. Almost time. You signal a halt just beyond the tree line, hidden from the main road by a low ridge. The men dismount, some collapsing onto the grass, others pacing nervously, their eyes drawn magnetically towards the city gates, still open but guarded, bathed in the golden light of late afternoon.

"Listen well," your voice rings out, sharp and clear in the sudden quiet of the gathering dusk. All eyes snap to you – human and wolf. "We enter now, before sunset closes the gates. Act normal. Be men. For now." You lock eyes with your sons, their amber gazes gleaming with understanding. "You know your task. When the moon rises, when the change begins inside the city walls…" You point towards the main gatehouse. "Open the gates. Then join the hunt." A low chorus of affirmative grunts and growls answers you. You turn back to the bandaged men, their faces pale blurs in the fading light. Fear radiates off them like heat. "As for you," you say, your tone softening almost imperceptibly, a queen addressing her loyal, terrified subjects. "The change will come. It will hurt. You will feel the beast." You pause, letting the dread settle. "Fight it. Remember who you are. Remember your families. Your homes. Your oaths to me." You place a hand on your stomach. "You are men first. Soldiers. Knights. Lords. The wolf is a tool. A weapon I have given you. Use it to secure your Queen’s throne, and your own futures. Do not let it use you. Conquer. Do not kill unless you must." You see Marcus nodding fiercely, his eyes burning with a desperate intensity. Others murmur shaky agreements. "Now, move! Inside the walls before full dark!"

The final approach is tense, a forced nonchalance as your mixed group rides towards the capital’s main gate. Your father rides tall beside you, burying his fear under decades of aristocratic bearing. Marcus keeps his bandaged hand tucked inside his cloak. The guards at the gate, recognizing Lord Harrington and his heir, wave you through with bored salutes, barely glancing at the unusually large, silent "huntsmen" accompanying you. You offer them a cool, dismissive nod as you pass beneath the heavy portcullis, the iron teeth a stark reminder of what guards this place. Inside, the familiar bustle of the city feels alien, charged. The smells of baking bread and sewage, the shouts of vendors, the clatter of carts – it’s suddenly overwhelming. You head towards the castle district, aiming for streets where your presence is expected but the inevitable chaos can be contained. Jaina sticks close, her calmness a strange anchor. Alpha and the old bloods wait patiently at the forrests edge waiting for night fall. Your sons melt into the deepening shadows of alleyways, positioning themselves near the massive gate mechanisms. Your father’s townhouse looms ahead, a temporary sanctuary as the last sliver of sun vanishes below the horizon. The moon, full and heavy, begins its ascent, washing the city streets in cold, silver light.

You dismount in the courtyard, the metallic tang of fear suddenly sharp in the air. The men shuffle nervously, eyes darting skyward. A low groan escapes a young squire. Marcus doubles over, clutching his stomach. "It's… it's starting," he gasps.

You stand tall in the moonlit courtyard, the sounds of the city fading beneath a rising tide of guttural whines and the sickening crackle of bones beginning to reshape. "Steady," you command, your voice cutting through the first wave of panic. "Remember yourselves. Hold on." You meet your father’s wide, terrified eyes. He staggers, a choked cry escaping him.

Then, from the direction of the city gates, a long, piercing howl shatters the night – ancient, powerful, triumphant. It’s followed by the grinding screech of heavy iron hinges being forced open. Your sons. The gates are breached. Another howl answers from within the city, closer this time, raw and agonized. Then another. And another. The transformation ripples through the streets like wildfire. Shouts of alarm turn to screams of pure terror. The hunt is loose.

You watch as Marcus convulses, his spine arching impossibly, coarse fur erupting through his tunic. Your father collapses onto the cobblestones, writhing. You feel nothing but a fierce, cold surge of power. The city echoes with the sounds of chaos – snarling, howling, shattering glass, frantic bells beginning to toll the alarm. You draw a deep breath of the cool, blood-scented air. Alpha materializes beside you, his dark form radiating lethal readiness, his eyes fixed on the castle lights glowing atop the hill. Below, the streets pulse with the sounds of your new world being born in tooth and claw. "Now," you say, your voice calm, commanding. "Take your city."

The command hangs in the air, sharp and final. Below, the city screams. Glass shatters. The frantic clang of alarm bells battles the rising chorus of snarls and agonized howls – the chilling music of your ascension. Your father writhes on the cobblestones near the townhouse, his fine clothes shredding as dark fur erupts, his human cries dying into guttural whines. Marcus, already hunched and bristling, snaps his newly elongated jaws at the air, a terrifying intelligence warring with primal hunger in his amber eyes. Jaina stands frozen beside your horse, her usual calm shattered, face pale in the moonlight, knuckles white where she grips the pony’s saddle. Panic radiates from her like heat. "Lady Rachel... the gate..."

"Quiet, Jaina," you snap, eyes fixed uphill towards the castle’s blazing lights. "They know their task." Alpha materializes from the shadows beside you, massive and silent, his dark fur absorbing the moonlight. He tilts his head, nostrils flaring, tasting the chaos on the wind. A savage satisfaction thrums through him, mirrored in your own cold certainty. This is yours. All of it. "Forward," you command Alpha, your voice cutting through the din. "Clear the path." He lopes ahead, a midnight shadow flowing uphill with terrifying speed, your transformed brother and father stumbling, then finding their new legs, falling in behind him with low, eager growls. Their movements are jerky, unpracticed, but driven by raw power and your will. They crash through panicked citizens like reeds, leaving broken bodies in their wake. You follow, your pace deliberate, unhurried, silk skirts whispering over blood-slicked cobbles. Jaina trails silently, a ghost in your wake. The scent of iron and terror is thick enough to choke on.

The palace walls loom, massive blocks of pale stone gleaming under torches. You see them ahead: the main gates. Heavy oak reinforced with iron bands, the kingdom's teeth. Soldiers swarm it, faces masks of terror under their helmets, desperately heaving, muscles straining against the immense weight. "Close it! CLOSE IT!" Their sergeant bellows, voice cracking, shoving his shoulder against the shuddering wood. Too late. Alpha hits them like a living avalanche. A single swipe of his massive arm sends two men flying, bones snapping like dry twigs. Your father, Lord Harrington's noble features distorted by fur and fang, barrels into the knot of guards, jaws clamping down on a spearman's arm. The sickening crunch echoes. Marcus, finding his feral coordination, leaps, dragging another soldier down in a tangle of limbs and spraying arterial crimson.

One guardsman, perhaps braver or more foolish than the rest, raises a halberd with a shaking grip. "Monster!" he screams, swinging wildly at Alpha. Alpha doesn't flinch. He catches the clumsy blow on his thick forearm, the blade biting fur but glancing off bone. A low, rumbling growl vibrates the air. Then, faster than thought, Alpha’s other hand shoots out, claws extended. They punch through boiled leather, flesh, and bone beneath the man’s ribs. He stares down, shocked, at the dark furred limb buried in his chest. Alpha rips his arm free. The guard collapses, dead before he hits the flagstones, a wet, empty sack. The remaining soldiers see their comrade fall. Their resolve shatters. Fear extinguishes any flicker of duty. They break, scrambling backwards, tripping over each other, weapons clattering forgotten as they flee into the shadowed courtyard, howling in pure animal terror. The massive gate groans, half-closed, useless.

You never broke stride. You step over the dead guardsman, the sole of your boot avoiding the spreading pool of dark blood by mere inches. Silk brushes against splintered wood. The scent of fresh death is sharp, metallic. You enter the palace grounds, Jaina pressing close behind, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Alpha shakes crimson droplets from his claws, a dark smear marring the pristine courtyard gravel. Your father sniffs the air, a low whine escaping him, while Marcus paces restlessly nearby, muzzle stained. The palace doors – tall, intricately carved, symbols of your uncle's stolen power – stand before you. Torchlight spills from within. You can hear the muffled chaos beyond, the shouts of confused guards, the panicked cries of courtiers. A thin smile touches your lips. "The Audience Chamber," you state, your voice carrying clearly in the sudden, tense quiet of the ravaged courtyard. "He’ll be there. Pretending he’s still king." You walk towards the doors, your footsteps echoing on the stone. Alpha falls in beside you, a mountain of shadow and menace. Your transformed family flank you, bristling, teeth bared. Jaina follows, a silent, wide-eyed shadow. The hunt isn't over. The throne awaits its true queen. You reach for the gilded handle. Time to collect your crown.
