Chapter 14: Wolfpack's Stride
The briefing room was a stark contrast to the sterile medical environment Lyra had just left. The walls were adorned with maps and intelligence reports, the air thick with the scent of coffee and the faint hum of the ventilation system. The room was bathed in a soft glow from the overhead lights, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor. The table at the center of the room was a large, rectangular affair, its surface scarred by years of use and the weight of countless strategic discussions.
Captain James sat at its head, his back straight and his eyes scanning a map spread out before him. To his left, Officer Thomas leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest as he listened intently to Aldere, who stood beside him, his finger tracing a path along the map.
As Lyra entered the room, she stood tall, her heels clicking together as she snapped to attention. "Captain James, sir," she began, her voice clear and steady as she gave her salute. "I report ready for duty." Her eyes flicked briefly to each of her teammates, acknowledging their presence with a nod before returning her gaze to Captain James.
Captain James looked up from the map, his piercing blue eyes meeting hers for a moment before he nodded. "At ease, Bunny," he said, his voice calm and collected.
"I trust you've completed the tasks I assigned you yesterday?"
Lyra stood at attention, her back straight and her eyes fixed on Captain James. "Yes, sir," she replied promptly. "I've cleaned the Wolfpack Barrack thoroughly, and I've also socialized with the female soldiers on the base, as ordered. I believe it's important to maintain a strong bond among the troops, sir."
Captain James nodded, a hint of approval in his eyes. "Good work, Bunny," he said. "I'm glad to see you taking your duties seriously.
"Now, how is Rashford's condition?" Captain James asked, his eyes scanning the room as if expecting some sort of visual confirmation. "His condition is improving gradually, sir," she reported. "The medic says he's responding well to the treatment. He's still weak from the injury, but he's stable and alert."
Captain James nodded, a hint of relief in his eyes. "Good to hear. We need him back on his feet as soon as possible. The mission can't wait."
Lyra nodded, understanding the urgency in his voice. "Yes, sir. I'll make sure he gets all the care he needs." Captain James nodded, satisfied with her response.
"Good. Now, let's go check on Rashford ourselves. I want to see how he's progressing with my own eyes." He stood up. "Aldere, Thomas, you're with me. Bunny, you too." Captain James' voice was firm yet gentle as he addressed Lyra. She nodded promptly, her eyes meeting his briefly before she turned to follow him out of the room.
"Sir," Lyra replied, her voice steady and clear as she snapped to attention once more. "Yes, sir." She looked at Aldere and Thomas, who were already standing at attention beside Captain James. "Yes, sir," they echoed in unison.
The Wolfpack team exited the barrack, their boots echoing on the concrete as they fell into step behind Captain James. As they made their way towards the clinic, soldiers turned their faces towards them, eyes filled with respect and awe. The Wolfpack team was a special force with many glorious stories, and their presence commanded attention.
Lyra walked behind her team mates, her eyes scanning the faces of the soldiers they passed. She could see the admiration in their gazes, and it filled her with a sense of pride. She was part of something bigger now, something important. She could feel the weight of their gazes on her, and it made her stand taller, her shoulders squared with confidence.
Captain James led them through the bustling base, his stride purposeful and sure. He nodded at the soldiers they passed, acknowledging their salutes with a sharp nod of his own.
As they walked, Lyra could feel the weight of their gazes on her, some curious, some appraising. She caught a few glances lingering on her exposed midriff, where her pants and utility belt rested low on her pelvic bones, just below the tie of her micro bikini bottoms. Her combat gear was practical and lightweight, designed for speed and agility, but it left little to the imagination. She knew she was drawing attention, and it made her feel both self-conscious and empowered.
Yet, as she caught some of those glances towards her, she could see the questions in their eyes, asking silently who she was, what her role was in the Wolfpack team. She held her head high, meeting their gazes with a steady one of her own, her steps falling into sync with the rhythm of the men beside her.
As they approached the clinic door, Lyra took the initiative to rush forward, her hand reaching out to grasp the handle. She opened the door with a swift motion, holding it wide for her team mates to enter. The door swung open with a soft creak, revealing the bustling clinic interior.
The scent of antiseptic and the faint hum of medical equipment filled the air as they stepped inside.
Every head in the bustling reception turned towards them, eyes wide with awe and respect. The Wolfpack team was a sight to behold, their confident strides and sharp uniforms commanding attention. Lyra could feel the weight of their gazes, but she held her head high, her shoulders squared with pride.
"Captain James," a voice boomed from across the room. The head medic, a stern woman with silver hair pulled back into a tight bun, approached them. "It's an honor to have you here, sir. I trust you're here to check on Officer Rashford?"
Captain James nodded, his expression serious. "Indeed, Doctor." Captain James' voice was steady and commanding as he addressed the head medic. "We're here to check on Officer Rashford's condition."
As he spoke, Lyra could see Maria, who was behind the head medic, looking in awe towards her team. Lyra gave a playful wave towards Maria, a small smile playing on her lips. She could see the admiration in Maria's eyes, and it made her feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
The head medic nodded, her expression serious. "Very well, Captain. Follow me, please." She turned and led them down a long corridor lined with doors on either side. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the sterile white walls, the air thick with the scent of antiseptic.
Maria walked next to Lyra behind the head medic and the rest of the Wolfpack team, her eyes wide with excitement. She leaned in close to Lyra, her voice barely above a whisper as they followed the medic down the long corridor.
"Lyra," she said, her eyes wide with excitement. "I can't believe you're here with the Wolfpack team. You're like a celebrity!"
Lyra chuckled softly, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "Maria," she teased, "you make it sound like I'm some kind of rockstar. I'm just doing my duty."
Maria rolled her eyes, but her smile never faded. "Duty or not, you're still the most badass woman I know. And now you're hanging out with the most elite soldiers in the army. I'm so jealous!"
Lyra laughed softly, shaking her head. "You shouldn't be jealous. You're doing just as important a job here as we are out there."
Maria waved her hand dismissively. "Yeah, yeah. But you're out there kicking ass and taking names.
I wish I could be half as cool as you." Maria's eyes sparkled with admiration as she spoke.
Lyra chuckled softly, shaking her head. "Maria, you're just as important here as we are out there. You're keeping our boys alive and well." She gave Maria a playful nudge with her elbow.
Maria's face lit up with a smile. "You're right. I guess I just get a little starstruck when I see you all in action." Maria's cheeks flushed slightly as she admitted her admiration.
"You know, Lyra, I've always wondered if I could pull off that look you've got going on. You know, the combat gear that shows off your midriff. Maybe if I did, they'd let me join the Wolfpack team too!" Maria teased, her fingers giving a playful pinch to Lyra's exposed midriff. Lyra laughed, a sound that echoed down the corridor, drawing a few amused glances from the soldiers they passed. "Maria," she chuckled, "you know as well as I do that it's not just about the look. It's about the skills and the training." Yet, even as she said it, Lyra couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at Maria's admiration.
She knew that Maria saw her as a role model, a symbol of strength and capability. But deep down, Lyra knew that there was more to her role in the Wolfpack team than just being a recon specialist. She was also the Barrack's Bunny, a title that carried a weight she couldn't ignore. She couldn't afford for Maria to know that secret. It was a burden she carried alone, a secret she kept hidden beneath her confident exterior.
But as they walked down the corridor, Lyra couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She knew that Maria's admiration was genuine, but she also knew that it was a double-edged sword. It was a reminder of the expectations placed upon her, the responsibilities she carried.
She had never been in an actual mission with the Wolfpack before, having joined them straight from the Academy just two days ago. The weight of their gazes on her was a constant reminder of the high standards she had to meet.
As they entered Rashford's room, Lyra's eyes immediately fell on the hulking figure of Officer Rashford, still laid out on the bed, his massive frame dwarfing the hospital mattress. His eyes, fiery and determined, met hers briefly before he snapped to attention, his hand coming up in a sharp salute. "Captain James, sir," he rumbled, his voice like distant thunder. "At ease, Rashford. I'm glad to see you looking so well." Captain James' voice was warm with relief as he approached Rashford's bedside. The head medic stood beside him, her expression serious yet hopeful.
"Captain," she began, "Officer Rashford's recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. His vital signs have improved significantly, and his wounds are healing at an astonishing rate. We've never seen anything like it."
Lyra watched as Thomas and Aldere exchanged playful glances, their eyes twinkling with mischief. "Well, Rashford," Thomas teased, "maybe they've been feeding you some secret super-soldier serum while we weren't looking."
Rashford chuckled, a deep rumble that shook the bed. "If they have, I wish they'd give some to the rest of us. I feel like I could take on a whole platoon right now."
Aldere joined in, his voice laced with humor. "Careful, Rashford.
Don't go getting too confident too soon," Captain James warned with a playful smile, his eyes flicking to the head medic.
"We don't want you overdoing it and ending up back here again."
Rashford chuckled, his massive chest heaving with laughter. "No, sir. I won't let you down." Rashford's gaze shifted to Lyra, his expression softening. "And I'm grateful for Bunny here. She took real good care of me, Captain. Cleaned me up, made sure I had everything I needed. She's got a gentle touch, but don't tell her I said that." He winked at Lyra, who blushed slightly at the unexpected compliment.
Captain James nodded, a hint of approval in his eyes as he looked at Lyra. "Good work, Bunny." Captain James' voice was warm with approval as he looked at Lyra. Lyra blushed in embarrassment because Maria was also within earshot, hearing that comment directed towards her. She quickly looked away, her cheeks flushing a deep shade of red.
Maria's eyes widened in surprise, her gaze flicking between Lyra and Captain James. She seemed to be processing the implications of what she had just heard. Lyra could see the questions in Maria's eyes, the confusion and the curiosity about the title "Bunny" and its significance.
"Thank you, sir," Lyra replied, her voice steady despite the heat in her cheeks. She tried to maintain her composure, but she could feel the weight of Maria's gaze on her. She knew that Maria was likely putting two and two together, trying to figure out what "Bunny" meant in this context.
Lyra could feel the weight of Maria's gaze on her, but she refused to meet her eyes, instead focusing on Rashford and the team.
After a few more minutes of light-hearted banter and updates on Rashford's condition, Captain James clapped his hands together, signaling the end of their visit. "Alright, team. Let's leave Rashford to rest. We've got a mission to plan for."
As they exited Rashford's room, Lyra could feel Maria's eyes burning into her back. She knew she would have to address the elephant in the room eventually, but for now, she was grateful for the reprieve.
The base's cafeteria was a bustling hub of activity, filled with the aroma of freshly cooked food and the hum of soldiers' conversations. The Wolfpack team found a table in the corner, away from the majority of the crowd.
Lyra sat between Aldere and Thomas, her eyes scanning the room as she took a bite of her sandwich. She could see Maria and Laura a few tables away, their heads bent together in conversation. She wondered what they were talking about, if they were talking about her.
She knew she had to clear the air with Maria, to address the elephant in the room. She couldn't let Maria's curiosity fester into something more. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the conversation she knew she had to have.
"Sir," she began, turning to Captain James, "may I ask a permission to eat with my friend Laura and Maria?" She kept her voice steady, her eyes meeting his with a calm confidence. She knew that asking for permission was a sign of respect, a sign that she valued his authority. But she also knew that she needed this conversation with Maria, and she hoped that he would understand that.
Captain James looked up from his meal, his piercing blue eyes meeting hers for a moment before he nodded. "Of course, Bunny." Captain James' voice was warm and understanding as he gave his permission. Lyra nodded, a small smile playing on her lips as she stood up, tray in hand. "Thank you, sir," she said, her voice steady and calm. She walked over to Maria and Laura's table, her heels clicking softly on the tiled floor.
