Chapter 19: The Upgrade Part 3
She had been training for a week now, running through the obstacle course daily, pushing herself harder each time. Yet, she still felt like she had so much more to improve on.
As she sat there, catching her breath, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. She had been so sure that she would see a more significant improvement in her time. But Maria and Laura were right. She couldn't rush progress. She needed to be patient, to trust in her training and her body's ability to improve.
Lyra looked down at her watch, her heart pounding with anticipation. The recent round of the obstacle course had taken her 6 minutes 2 seconds, a full 20 seconds faster than her first ever attempt. She felt a surge of pride, but also a twinge of disappointment. She had been hoping for more. She sighed, running a hand through her short, ashen hair. She knew she couldn't rush progress, but she also couldn't afford to be complacent. She had to keep pushing herself, keep improving. She stood up, her muscles protesting slightly from the exertion of the course. She was alone this time, Laura and Maria having other duties to attend to. She missed their support, their encouraging cheers, but she also welcomed the solitude. It allowed her to focus, to push herself even harder. She looked out at the obstacle course, her eyes scanning each challenge. She knew what she needed to work on.
She laid down on the ground, facing the sky, her breath still ragged from the exertion. The sun was beginning to set, casting an orange glow over the obstacle course. She closed her eyes, letting the warmth of the sun soak into her skin. She could feel the cool breeze against her sweat-drenched body, and she welcomed it, letting it cool her down.
Then, the rain started to fall. It was a light drizzle at first, but it quickly picked up, turning into a steady downpour. She felt the first few drops on her cheeks, and she smiled, letting them wash away the sweat and dirt from her face. She lay there for a moment, enjoying the sensation of the rain against her skin, letting it cleanse her of the day's exertion. But as the rain picked up, she felt a chill run down her spine, and she shivered. She looked down at her body, at the mud that had caked onto her gear and exposed belly, and she felt a wave of despair wash over her. She had pushed herself so hard, had given it everything she had, and yet she still felt like she was falling short. She felt tears well up in her eyes, and she let them fall, letting the rain wash them away.
As she lay there, the rain pounding against her body, she couldn't help but feel a sense of hopelessness. She had been training for so long, had pushed herself so hard, and yet she still felt like she wasn't good enough. She had been so sure that she would see a more significant improvement in her time, that she would finally be able to prove herself.
She gathered her courage, and stood. As she looked out at the obstacle course, she felt a surge of determination. She needed to be more aggressive in her approach, to push herself harder without compromising her safety. She needed to find that balance between caution and speed.
She took a deep breath, steeling herself for another round through the obstacle course. The first obstacle loomed before her - a high wall, at least ten feet tall, made of rough-hewn stone. She could see handholds carved into the surface, but they were spaced far apart, requiring a good reach and strong grip.
She took a running start, leaping towards the wall with all her might.
Her fingers grazed the first handhold, but she missed it, her body slamming into the wall with a jarring impact. She gritted her teeth, pushing off from the wall and trying again. This time, her fingers wrapped around the handhold, and she pulled herself up, her muscles straining with the effort.
As she reached the top of the wall, she paused for a moment, looking out at the rest of the course. The rain was coming down harder now, turning the ground into a slippery mess. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the challenges ahead.
The next obstacle was a barbed wire crawl, low to the ground and barely wide enough for her to squeeze through on her belly. She dropped to her hands and knees, her heart pounding in her chest as she began to crawl. The cold, wet mud squelched beneath her, and she could feel the sharp edges of the barbed wire scraping against her exposed midriff. She gritted her teeth, pushing herself forward with determination. She blinked it away, her gaze fixed on the next obstacle - a set of monkey bars.
She approached them, her muscles already protesting from the previous exertion. She jumped, grabbing onto the first bar with both hands. Her arms shook as she swung herself forward, her body barely clearing the ground. She gritted her teeth, pushing herself to go faster. She could hear the rain pounding against the metal bars, echoing in her ears.
As she reached the last bar, she let go, her body soaring through the air towards the rope climb. She grabbed onto it, her hands slipping slightly on the wet surface. She gritted her teeth, pulling herself up with all her might. Her muscles burned as she climbed higher and higher, her body drenched in sweat and rain.
She looked down at the pit of water below, her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the final challenge.
The pit of water loomed before her, its surface churning with rainwater. She knew she had to make this jump count. She took a running start, her heart pounding in her chest as she launched herself into the air. The water splashed up around her as she landed on the other side, sending a wave of cold water crashing over her. She gritted her teeth, pushing off from the ground and sprinting towards the finish line.
The rain pounded against her body as she ran, each step a struggle against the slick ground. She could feel the mud caking onto her gear, slowing her down. But she refused to let it deter her. She pushed herself harder, her muscles burning as she fought against the elements.
As she reached the finish line, she collapsed onto the ground, her body drenched and exhausted. She looked at her watch, her eyes widening in surprise. "5 minutes 58 seconds," she whispered to herself, a comfortable sigh escaping her lips. Relief washed over her, but it was short-lived. The exhaustion hit her like a wave, and she felt her vision start to swim.
"Oh shit," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper as she felt herself begin to black out.
The last thing she remembered was the cold water splashing against her face, the sting of it bringing her back to consciousness for a moment before everything went dark.
She woke up in familiar surroundings, the soft glow of the partition room's lights casting long shadows across the room. The sheets were damp and cold against her skin, and she could feel the weight of exhaustion pressing down on her like a physical force.
Captain James' partition room was where she shared a bed with him, but he wasn't in the room now. She could hear the faint hum of activity outside, the distant echo of voices and footsteps, but everything felt distant and muffled, as if she were still caught in the remnants of a dream.
She lifted up the sheets to peek inside, her body cleaned and wearing her combat shorts but bare-chested as usual for sleeping. The cool air of the room hit her skin, sending a shiver down her spine. She looked around, her eyes adjusting to the dim light filtering through the window.
The familiar sight of the Wolfpack Barracks brought a sense of relief washing over her. She was safe, back where she belonged. She let out a soft sigh, her body relaxing into the mattress as she pulled the sheets back up, tucking them around her.
The exhaustion was overwhelming, but she couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. She had pushed herself harder than ever before, and she had made progress. She closed her eyes, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth as she drifted back to sleep.
When she woke again, it was to the sound of rain pattering against the windowpane, and the sun had already set, casting the room in a soft, warm glow from the bedside lamp. She stretched, her muscles protesting slightly from the day's exertion, but the rest had done her good. She felt refreshed, her stamina returned, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
She swung her legs out of bed, the cool air of the room prickling her skin. She stood up, stretching her arms above her head, her body still damp from the rain and her earlier exertion. She looked around the room, her eyes landing on the cupboard in the corner. She remembered the makeshift crop top she had made from an old t-shirt, perfect for sleeping and training in. She walked over to the cupboard, her bare feet padding softly against the floor.
She pulled out her makeshift crop top, slipping it over her head. The soft fabric felt cool against her skin, and she let out a small sigh of relief. She turned to leave, but paused as she heard voices coming from outside Captain James' room.
Intrigued, she followed the sound to the makeshift bar of the Wolfpack Barracks. It was a simple setup, a few barrels with crates on top serving as tables, and a few old chairs scattered about. Officer Thomas was sitting on the sofa, nursing a beer, his head bent as he leafed through a magazine. He glanced up, his eyes scanning the room, but he didn't notice Lyra standing in the doorway.
"Hey, Officer Thomas," she said, her voice casual as she stepped into the room. "I didn't mean to startle you." She walked over to the makeshift bar, grabbing a bottle of water from the small fridge underneath.
Thomas looked up, and his eyes widened in surprise. "Bunny, hey," he said, quickly closing the magazine. "I didn't see you come in." Thomas looked up from his magazine, his eyes meeting Lyra's as she stepped into the room.
"Permission to join you, Officer Thomas?" Lyra asked, holding up a glass of water as she nodded towards the empty space on the sofa beside him.
"Of course, Bunny," Thomas replied, patting the seat next to him.
Lyra sat down, her eyes scanning the room as she tried to figure out what kind of conversation she should have with Officer Thomas. The silence between them stretched on for minutes, filled only by the distant hum of activity outside and the occasional clink of glasses from the makeshift bar.
Lyra took a sip of her water, trying to gather her thoughts. She had always been more comfortable in the field than in social situations, and this felt like a delicate balance between the two. She looked over at Thomas, who was watching her with a curious expression.
"Where are Captain James and Officer Aldere?" she asked, her voice casual.
Thomas took a sip of his beer before answering, "They're at the clinic, checking on Rashford's condition." He set his beer down on the crate next to him, his eyes meeting Lyra's. "How are you feeling, Bunny?
Did you get enough rest?" Thomas asked, his voice laced with genuine concern as he looked Lyra up and down.
Lyra took a sip of her water, her eyes flicking up to meet Thomas's gaze. "I had a good rest," she replied, her voice steady and confident. She smiled slightly, trying to downplay the exhaustion that still lingered in her muscles.
Thomas nodded, his expression softening as he took in her response. "Well, that's good to hear," he said. She had been training for a week now, running through the obstacle course daily, pushing herself harder each time.
She looked at Thomas, which she lost the agility race against at her first day in Veridiania's base. In her mind, she had lots of questions about how to improve her agility, but she hesitated. She didn't want to seem like she was seeking special treatment or favoritism from him. She took a sip of her water, trying to gather her thoughts.
"Officer Thomas," she finally said, her voice steady and calm. "I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to improve my agility. I know I've been struggling with it, and I want to get better."
Thomas looked at her, his eyes softening as he took in her words. He nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Of course, Bunny," he said. Then Lyra asked about officer Thomas' time on that obstacle course, "How long does it take you to finish the obstacle course?" she asked, her eyes curious and eager.
Thomas took a moment to think, his gaze flicking up to the ceiling as he recalled his personal best time.
"Well, Bunny," he began, "my best time on the obstacle course is 4 minutes 32 seconds." He looked back down at Lyra, a hint of pride in his eyes.
Lyra's heart sank. She had been training for a week now, running through the obstacle course daily, pushing herself harder each time. Yet, her best time of 5 minutes 58 seconds paled in comparison to Thomas's 4 minutes 32 seconds. The realization of how big the gap was hit her like a punch to the gut. She felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her, her cheeks flushing with heat. She looked down at her hands, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her makeshift crop top. She had always been competitive, but this was different. This was a stark reminder of how much she still had to improve.
Thomas noticed the change in her demeanor, his expression softening. "Hey, Bunny, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice gentle. Lyra hesitated, her eyes still cast downward.
"I just... I feel like I'm not making any progress," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I've been trying so hard, but I'm still so far from where I want to be." She looked up at Thomas, her green eyes filled with frustration and determination.
"I'm just afraid that... that I'm the weakest link in the team," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt a pang of vulnerability, the weight of her inadequacy pressing down on her.
"I'm afraid that if I can't keep up, I'll hold the team back," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. The realization that her struggles could potentially put her teammates in danger, including Captain James, Officer Rashford, Officer Thomas and Officer Aldere, hit her like a punch to the gut. She looked down at her hands, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her makeshift crop top, her chest tightening with anxiety.
Thomas noticed her agitated breathing, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her shoulders tensing with each passing moment. He set his beer down, his eyes meeting hers with concern.
"Bunny, you're hyperventilating," he said, his voice gentle yet firm. Lyra looked up, her eyes wide with panic. "Listen, I know Captain James has a reason for having you on the Wolfpack team, and it's not just because he thinks you're easy on the eyes," Thomas added, a hint of dry humor in his voice. He reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder, grounding her with his touch.
"Captain James has faith in you, Bunny," he continued, his gaze steady and reassuring. "He knows your skills, your determination, and your potential. That's why he's invested in you, why he's given you the role of recon.
But if you're still uncertain, I dare you to ask him yourself." Thomas leaned forward, his eyes meeting hers with a challenge. "Ask Captain James why he chose you, why he believes in you. Then, and only then, you'll know the truth." He saw the hesitation in her eyes, the fear of rejection, and he shook his head. "Don't let your doubts hold you back, Bunny. You're better than that."
Lyra felt her heart pounding in her chest at Thomas's dare. She knew he was right, that she needed to confront her fears and insecurities head-on. But the thought of facing Captain James, of asking him why he had chosen her, made her stomach twist into knots.
She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the confrontation. She had to know the truth.
Suddenly, they both heard footsteps coming into the makeshift bar of Wolfpack Barracks. Lyra and Thomas stood up, giving a salute to Captain James as he and Officer Aldere came into view.
"At ease," Captain James barked, his gaze sweeping over the room. He looked at Lyra and Thomas, his expression stern. "What's going on here?" he asked, his voice sharp.
Lyra hesitated, her heart pounding in her chest. She looked at Thomas, who gave her a subtle nod of encouragement. She took a deep breath and stepped forward.
"Captain James," she began, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "I was hoping we could talk about my role on the team."
Captain James raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. "Oh, really?" he asked, his voice laced with skepticism.
"What's this about?" Lyra took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. "I want to understand my role better," she said, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "I want to know why you chose me for this team." Captain James' expression softened slightly, and he gestured for them to sit down. "Very well," he said, taking a seat on the sofa. Officer Aldere and Officer Thomas sat on the bar stools, their eyes fixed on Lyra with a mix of curiosity and concern.
"Bunny," Captain James began, his voice firm yet gentle. "I chose you for this team because I saw something in you that I believed could be invaluable to our mission." He leaned forward, his eyes meeting hers with an intensity that made her heart race. "You have a unique perspective, a freshness that can be both a strength and a weakness." Captain James paused, his gaze flicking to Thomas. "And I should add, you have Officer Thomas to thank for bringing you back here when you passed out at the obstacle course. He carried you all the way back to the barracks." Lyra's eyes widened in surprise, her gaze darting to Thomas, who gave her a small smile.
Captain James noticed the exchange and added, "Thomas has been keeping an eye on you during your training sessions at the obstacle course.
He's seen your progress and knows your potential." He turned back to Lyra, his expression serious. "But I also chose you because you have something that sets you apart from the rest of the team."
Lyra's heart pounded in her chest as she waited for him to continue. She could feel the weight of his gaze on her, and she struggled to maintain eye contact.
"Your agility," he said finally, his voice low. "You have a natural grace and speed that makes you an asset in close-quarters combat. But I also see your determination, your resilience.
Your agility may not match Thomas's speed, but it comes with a swiftness that allows you to move silently. It's a skill that's invaluable in our line of work. You may not be the fastest, but you're the stealthiest." Captain James's words hung in the air, and Lyra felt a surge of pride mixed with relief. She had been so focused on her agility that she had overlooked her other strengths. She looked at Thomas, who gave her a subtle nod of approval.
"Th-thank you, Officer Thomas," she stammered, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I-I didn't know you were watching me." She looked down at her hands, fidgeting with the hem of her crop top.
"I mean, I've been trying to improve my agility, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Everyone laughed at Lyra's silliness as her cheeks flush with embarrassment. She looked up at Captain James, who was trying to suppress a smile.
"Alright, that's enough for tonight," he said, his voice firm yet gentle. "We've all had a long day. Get some rest, everyone."
Lyra nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She stood up, giving Captain James a salute. "Yes, sir," she said, her voice steady.
She stood up from the sofa, giving Captain James a salute before turning to leave. Thomas and Aldere followed suit, giving their own salutes before heading towards their partition rooms. Lyra walked towards Captain James' partition room, her mind racing with the conversation she had just had. She couldn't believe that Captain James had seen something in her that made her an asset to the team. She had always been so focused on her agility that she had overlooked her other strengths.
As she reached Captain James' partition room, she hesitated for a moment before entering. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever was to come. She removed the makeshift crop top as she stepped inside, leaving her bare-chested with only her combat shorts covering her lower half.
She placed the crop top gently into the cupboard, her mind still racing with Captain James' words. She turned around, but before she could close the cupboard door, she heard the sound of the partition room door opening.
Captain James stepped inside, his gaze sweeping over the room, before settling on Lyra. She froze, her hands still on the cupboard door, her mind still reeling from their earlier conversation. She had been so caught up in her thoughts that she hadn't expected him to return so soon.
Captain James closed the door behind him, his eyes locking onto hers. "Bunny," he said, his voice low and commanding. "I see you've made yourself comfortable." Lyra felt a shiver run down her spine at the authority in his voice.
As she was about to close the cupboard door, she felt his body press against her back, his hands already roaming over her hips and belly, his breath hot on her neck. "Oh..." she gasped, her breath hitching as she felt the weight of his body against hers, his hands exploring her skin with a hungry intensity.
"Captain James," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she felt his left hand move from her hips to her left breast, his fingers squeezing and teasing her nipple.
"Bunny," he murmured, his voice low and husky as he leaned in closer, his breath hot on her ear. "If you were trained so hard today, then you must be tired." His hand continued to explore her body, his fingers tracing the curve of her breast before moving down to her stomach, his touch sending shivers down her spine.
Lyra's heart pounded in her chest as she felt his hands on her body, but she knew she had a duty to fulfill as the Barrack's Bunny. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what was to come. "Captain James," she said, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach.
"I'm training for my role as the recon." She took a deep breath, her grip tightening on the cupboard door as she felt his hands continue to explore her body.
Captain James chuckled softly, his breath hot on her neck. "I admire your dedication, Bunny," he murmured, his fingers tracing circles on her stomach.
"But I must ask, are you tired now?" His voice was low, laced with a hint of mischief. She knew she couldn't decline anything that happened to her, not with her role as the Barrack's Bunny. "No, Captain James," she said, her voice steady.
"I'm ready for any orders upon me." She felt his hands pause for a moment before continuing their exploration, his fingers tracing the curve of her breast again. "I'm ready for whatever you have in mind," she added, her voice barely above a whisper. He leaned in closer, his voice low and husky. "You've been training all day." "No, Captain James," she said, her voice steady despite the butterflies in her stomach. "I'm ready for whatever you have in mind."
Captain James' hands moved from her stomach to her hips, his fingers gripping her tightly as he pulled her back against him.
Lyra felt the hardness of his body against her, and a shiver ran down her spine. "Who are you, Bunny?" he asked, his voice laced with mischief.
Lyra took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest. "I'm the recon of the Wolfpack team, sir," she said, her voice steady despite the heat in her cheeks. "And I'm the Barrack's Bunny, sir."
She felt Captain James' grip on her hips tighten, his body pressing against hers as he leaned in closer. "The Barrack's Bunny," he murmured, his breath hot on her ear. "I think it's time you lived up to that title, don't you?" His hands moved up her body, his fingers tracing the curve of her waist before sliding up to cup her breasts.
He squeezed them gently, his thumbs brushing against her nipples, making them harden. Lyra gasped, her head falling back against his shoulder as he continued to tease her.
"Captain James," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she felt his hands move lower, reaching the waistband of her combat shorts. Her eyes widened in surprise, and her hands instinctively reached for his, trying to stop him.
But she knew she couldn't. Not with her role as the Barrack's Bunny hanging over her like a dark cloud. So, she let go, her hands falling limply to her sides, and her eyes closing as she braced herself for what was to come. Captain James took that as his cue, his hands moving to her hips and hooking into the waistband of her combat shorts. He pulled them down roughly, not bothering with finesse, and Lyra felt the cool air against her skin as he exposed her to him.
She stood there, naked, her heart pounding in her chest as she waited for his next move. She could feel his eyes on her, taking in every inch of her body, and she fought the urge to cover herself with her hands. She was his to command, and she knew it.
Lyra stood there, her heart pounding in her chest as she waited for his next move. She could feel his breath on her neck, hot and heavy, and she shivered at the thought of what was to come. She had been so focused on her training that she hadn't expected this. But she knew she couldn't refuse him.
Without her knowing, his right hand squeezed her breast, his fingers digging into her soft flesh as he pulled her back against him. She gasped, her eyes widening in surprise as she felt his left hand move lower, his fingers tracing the curve of her hip before sliding between her legs. She tensed, her breath hitching as he found her entrance, his fingers pressing against her slick folds.
"Captain James," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she felt his fingers begin to move, sliding through her wetness with ease.
She gasped, her head falling back against his shoulder as he continued to explore her, his fingers circling her clit before dipping inside her.
"Fuck," she moaned, her hips bucking against his hand as he began to move his fingers in and out of her, his thumb continuing to tease her clit. She could feel the heat building inside her, her body aching for more.
Captain James chuckled softly, his breath hot on her ear. "You're so wet, Bunny," he murmured, his fingers moving faster, his thumb pressing harder against her clit.
Lyra bit her lip, trying to suppress a moan as she felt the heat building inside her. She was scared of the potential of losing her virginity tonight, so she said that she was tired. She had retracted her statement that she wasn't tired previously.
"Captain James," she whispered, her voice barely audible as she felt him press two fingers inside her, stretching her walls. She gasped, her hips bucking against his hand as he began to move his fingers in and out of her.
"Please," she begged, her voice shaking as she felt the heat building inside her. "Please, Captain James." She didn't know what she was asking for, but she knew she needed something more.
Captain James chuckled softly, his fingers moving faster as he continued to tease her clit with his thumb. "Please what, Bunny?" he asked, his voice low and husky.
Lyra hesitated for a moment before answering, "I-I am tired, Captain James. I didn't mean to say I wasn't earlier." She felt a pang of guilt for retracting her previous statement, but she couldn't help it.
Captain James chuckled, his fingers pausing for a moment before he pulled them out of her. "I see," he said, his voice low and amused. He reached down and picked up her combat shorts, pulling them back up over her hips. "Come on," he said, taking her hand and leading her towards the bed. "Let's get you into something more comfortable."
Lyra followed him, her heart still pounding in her chest as she tried to process what had just happened. She had never been so intimate with anyone before, and she wasn't sure how to feel about it. But as she sat down on the bed, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was safe here, with Captain James.
Captain James pulled off his shirt, revealing his muscular chest and abs. He was bare-chested now, his body pressed against hers as he lay down on the bed beside her. Lyra felt a shiver run down her spine as she looked at him, her eyes taking in every inch of his body.
He was so close, his bare chest pressed against hers, his breath hot on her neck. She could feel his heart beating in time with hers, and she knew that he was just as affected by their encounter as she was. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something she hadn't expected. Tiredness. He was exhausted, just like her.
The days of rigorous training had taken their toll on both of them. Captain James' eyes were heavy-lidded as he pulled Lyra closer to him, their bodies entwined under the thin blanket. Lyra's eyes fluttered closed as she rested her head on his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. They had both been pushed to their limits today, and the comfort of each other's presence was all they needed.
As they lay there in silence, their breaths slowly synchronizing, Lyra felt a sense of peace wash over her.
Captain James' arms wrapped around her, pulling her closer, and she could feel the steady beat of his heart against her cheek. She let out a soft sigh, her eyes fluttering closed as she allowed herself to drift off to sleep.
Captain James looked down at Lyra, her eyes already closed, her breathing slow and steady. A small smile played at the corners of his mouth as he too closed his eyes, his body relaxing into the mattress. "Goodnight, Bunny," he murmured softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
