Chapter 6: Accuracy

The dusk had passed, the sight limited by only the base's floodlights, casting long, dramatic shadows across the obstacle course. She could see Thomas standing tall and proud beside Captain James, his chest heaving slightly as he caught his breath. She could feel the weight of their gazes on her, assessing and judging. She knew that she had let them down, that she hadn't proven herself as she had hoped.

But she was determined to turn this setback into an opportunity to show them what she was truly capable of.

"Ashen," Captain James said, his voice sharp and commanding, "remind me, what else do you excel in from your training?"

Lyra took a deep breath, her eyes meeting Captain James' steady gaze. "Marksmanship, sir," she replied, her voice firm and confident. "I'm one of the top marksmen in my class."

Captain James' eyes narrowed slightly as he considered her words. "Is that so?" he asked, his voice low and steady. "Well, then, let's see what you've got." He turned to Officer Aldere, who had been quietly observing the exchange. "Aldere, lend your pistol to Cadet Ashen.

Captain James turned to Officer Aldere, his voice steady and calm. Let's see if her marksmanship is as impressive as she claims."

Officer Aldere's steely gray eyes flicked to Lyra, a hint of challenge in his gaze. He reached into his holster and withdrew his pistol, a sleek, well-maintained weapon that gleamed in the fading light. He held it out to Lyra, the grip facing her.

Lyra took the pistol from him, her fingers wrapping around the grip with practiced ease. She could feel the weight of it in her hand, the cool metal a familiar comfort. She had spent countless hours at the range, honing her skills, perfecting her aim.

She knew the feel of the pistol in her hand, the way it balanced in her grip, the subtle shift in weight as she raised it to her shoulder. She had never been one to shy away from a challenge, and she was determined to prove herself to Captain James and Officer Aldere.

Captain James handed his beer bottle to Officer Thomas, a casual gesture that belied the tension in the air. "Thomas," he said, his voice steady and calm, "place this bottle on a stone about 30 meters from us." He gestured towards a cluster of rocks at the edge of the obstacle course.

Officer Thomas took the bottle from Captain James, his eyes flicking to Lyra before he turned and strode towards the rocks. He placed the bottle carefully on a flat stone, his movements precise and controlled. He stood there for a moment, his gaze sweeping over the course before he turned back to face Lyra and Captain James.

"Ready, sir," he said, his voice steady and calm.

Captain James turned to Lyra, his blue eyes piercing in the fading light. "Alright, Ashen," he said, his voice sharp and commanding. "Let's see what you've got. Take aim and shoot that bottle."

Lyra raised the pistol, her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to focus on the bottle through the gathering darkness. The floodlights cast long, dramatic shadows across the obstacle course, making it difficult to see her target clearly. She could feel the weight of Captain James' gaze on her, the pressure to perform building with each passing second.

She took a deep breath, steadying her hand as she tried to line up the sights with the bottle. But the darkness made it difficult to see, and she could feel her confidence wavering. She knew that she had to trust her instincts, to rely on her training to guide her.

She took another deep breath, trying to steady her nerves as she focused on the target. But her hands were shaking slightly, her grip on the pistol not as sure as it should be.

Officer Aldere smirked, his steely gray eyes never leaving her. "You're shaking, Ashen," he said, his voice low and mocking. "Nervous?"

Lyra's jaw clenched at his words, her pride stinging at the implied insult. She refused to let him see her falter. She took another deep breath, trying to calm her nerves as she focused on the target once more.

She knew that she couldn't let them down, not again. She had to prove herself, to show them that she was worthy of her place on the team.

She took aim, her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to steady her hand. The pistol felt heavy in her grip, the weight of expectation pressing down on her shoulders. She closed one eye, lining up the sights with the bottle, but the darkness made it difficult to see clearly.

She fired five times, each shot echoing through the night like a thunderclap. The bottle wobbled with each impact, but it remained standing. One bullet barely grazed it, moving it only a few centimeters off its mark. The other shots missed entirely, kicking up dust and debris in their wake.

The silence that followed was deafening. Lyra's breath caught in her throat as she waited for Captain James' reaction. She could feel the weight of his gaze on her, the disappointment in his eyes.

"Well," Captain James said finally, his voice steady and calm. "That was...

underwhelming," Captain James finished, his voice devoid of emotion. He turned to Officer Aldere, who had been watching the display with a smug smirk. "Aldere, care to show Cadet Ashen how it's done?"

Officer Aldere took the pistol from Lyra, his fingers brushing against hers in a deliberate, lingering touch. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, the strength in his grip as he took the weapon from her.

She watched as he raised the pistol, his movements steady and sure. He took aim, his eyes narrowing as he focused on the target.

"Wait," Captain James interjected, his voice sharp and commanding. "The bottle's been moved. Ashen, go place it back for Aldere."

Lyra felt a flush of embarrassment at her earlier performance, but she refused to let it show. She strode towards the rocks, her back straight and her shoulders squared. She knew that she had to redeem herself, to prove that she was worthy of their respect.

She reached the bottle, picking it up carefully and placing it back on the flat stone where Officer Thomas had originally positioned it. She could see the faint marks in the dust where it had been moved, a stark reminder of her earlier failure.

She placed the bottle back on the exact spot where it had been before, her heart pounding in her chest as she turned back to face Captain James.

"Is it placed on the correct spot, sir?" she asked, her voice steady and confident despite the turmoil within her.

She knew she had to maintain her composure, to show them that she was still in control.

She turned to face Captain James, her back straight and her shoulders squared.

Captain James looked at her for a moment, his expression inscrutable. "No," he said finally, his voice sharp and commanding. "It's not good enough, Ashen. You need to do better."

Lyra felt a flush of embarrassment at his words, but she refused to let it show. She took a deep breath, her eyes locked onto Captain James' steady gaze.

"Pick up the bottle," he ordered, his voice firm and unyielding.

She reached down and picked up the bottle, her fingers wrapping around the cool glass. She could feel the weight of it in her hand, the slight wobble as she lifted it from the stone.

"Place it on your head," he commanded, his voice sharp and precise.

Lyra hesitated for a moment, taken aback by his order. But she knew better than to question him. She placed the bottle carefully on top of her head, balancing it precariously.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she looked up, seeing Officer Aldere raise his pistol, the barrel now pointing directly at the bottle above her head.

"Stay still, Ashen," Captain James ordered, his voice cold and unyielding. "Don't move a muscle." Captain James' voice was like ice, chilling Lyra to the bone.

"You're lucky Aldere's a marksman, not a murderer." She felt a shiver run down her spine, not just from the cold, but from the realization of how close she had come to being hurt. The shattered glass rained down around her, tinkling like tiny bells as it hit the ground. She let out the breath she had been holding, her heart pounding in her chest like a drum. She could feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins, her body trembling with the aftereffects of the near-miss.

Officer Aldere lowered his pistol, a smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth. Lyra's heart was still pounding in her chest, her breath coming in short gasps as she tried to process what had just happened. She could feel the shattered glass still raining down around her, each piece a stark reminder of how close she had come to being hurt.

The adrenaline coursing through her veins began to subside, leaving behind a cold, numbing sensation that seeped into her bones.

Captain James called out to her, his voice sharp and commanding. "Ashen, come over here."

Lyra hesitated for a moment, her eyes flicking to the shattered remnants of the bottle before she turned and made her way towards Captain James, Officer Aldere, and Officer Thomas. She could feel their eyes on her, assessing and judging as she approached.

As she drew closer, she could see the smirk still playing at the corners of Officer Aldere's mouth, his steely gray eyes never leaving her. She knew that he was enjoying her discomfort, that he saw this as an opportunity to assert his dominance.

She took a deep breath, her eyes meeting Captain James' steady gaze. "Officer Aldere's marksmanship is exceptional." She said, her voice firm and confident.

Captain James' gaze flicked to Officer Aldere, a hint of pride in his eyes. "It is," he agreed, his voice steady and calm. "But I'm curious, Ashen. What's your opinion on Aldere's skills? Be honest."

Lyra hesitated for a moment, her eyes flicking to Officer Aldere. She could see the challenge in his gaze, the expectation that she would praise him. But she refused to lie, to say something that she didn't truly believe.

"Sir," she said, her voice steady and confident, "Officer Aldere is an excellent marksman. His precision and control are unmatched." Lyra's voice was steady and honest, her eyes meeting Captain James' gaze.

Captain James chuckled, a low rumble that seemed to shake his broad chest. "Well said, Ashen. Aldere, you can take your leave. Thomas, you're dismissed as well." He waved them off with a dismissive gesture. "Ashen, follow me."

Lyra hesitated for a moment, her eyes flicking to Officer Aldere and Officer Thomas as they walked away. She could feel their gazes on her, assessing and judging. She knew that she had to maintain her composure, to show them that she was still in control.

She turned back to Captain James, her back straight and her shoulders squared. "Yes, sir," she said, her voice firm and confident.

Captain James led her back to the Wolfpack Barracks, the weight of his gaze on her as they walked.
