Chapter 9: The War Council
The buzzer cut through the low hum of the city outside. Marcus set down the bottle he'd been nursing and crossed the loft in three easy strides, thumbing the intercom without checking the screen. He knew the knock pattern. Always did.
Jason came through the door first, eyes scanning the apartment with the same instinct he'd had since high school, cataloguing everything. Pablo followed, ducking slightly under the frame despite it being taller than most doorways, his massive frame filling the entryway like a shadow given weight.
"Damn, bro." Jason whistled low, kicking off his sneakers. "You been doing interior design or some shit? Place looks like a damn magazine or something out of HGTV."
Marcus shrugged, accepting Pablo's one-armed hug. The big man's grip lingered a moment longer than usual, a silent question in the press of his palm. Marcus answered with a nod toward the couch.
"Drinks first. Talk after."
The coffee table was already set. Three bottles of premium beer sweating in a ring of condensation, glasses that didn't need to be fancy, and something else. Jason noticed it immediately when he sat down. Maps. Several of them, folded open, with locations marked in pencil. Some circled, some crossed out. A few with question marks.
"Should I even ask?" Jason picked one up, studying the marks. "This looks like a military operation."
"It is." Marcus settled into the corner of the sofa, legs spread, one arm draped across the back. He looked different than he had even six months ago. Sharper. The apartment smelled like expensive cologne and ambition, and he wore both like a second skin. "I'm building something. And I need my brothers in on it."
Pablo cracked open his beer, the cap twisting off with a soft hiss. He didn't speak much, never had. But his eyes were steady on Marcus, waiting.
"Had a meeting tonight with the Prof," Marcus continued, taking a pull from his bottle. "At Pink Valley."
Jason's eyebrows shot up. "The old school pimp who gave us that lecture back in the day? The one with the gaudy-ass fur coat and that girl kneeling at his feet like a dog?"
"Yeah." Marcus set the bottle down, leaning forward. The maps caught the lamplight, their pencil marks glowing like secrets. "He gave me a gift. A woman named Jade. Twenty-six, fine as fuck, beautiful, and used to dance at the club. She's got ears everywhere. Strip clubs, bars, the streets. You want to know what's happening in this city before it happens, she's the one who hears it."
"Hold up." Jason held up a hand, a grin spreading across his face. "You're telling me you've got a STRIPPER as your informant now? That's your play?"
"I've got a woman who loves me and would kill for me." Marcus's voice dropped, the easy confidence hardening into something steel-edged. "That's not a stripper. That's a damn soldier. And she's the first of many."
The room went quiet. Pablo shifted on the couch, the leather groaning under his weight. Jason set the map down slowly, his grin fading into something more thoughtful.
"What kind of proposition are we talking about?" Pablo's voice was low, rumbling like distant thunder.
Marcus spread his hands over the maps, tracing the circles and the crosses. "An empire. Not drugs. Not guns. Something smarter. I've got women in every corner of this city. A lawyer who feeds me information from the corporate world. An MMA fighter who handles problems before they become problems. Personal trainers, singers, athletes. And now a street-level asset who knows every hustler, every dealer, every cop on the take."
He looked at them both, the weight of twelve years of transformation pressing into his gaze.
"I need men I trust. To protect them. To move when I say move. To be my eyes when I can't be there." He picked up his bottle, tilting it toward his brothers. "Jason, you've been telling me my whole life I needed to level up. Well, I did. Now I'm asking you both to level up with me."
Jason held the bottle to his lips but didn't drink. His eyes stayed locked on Marcus over the rim, a slow grin creeping back across his face. It wasn't the easy, joking grin from before. This one had teeth.
"Level up," Jason repeated, letting the words roll around in his mouth like he was tasting them. "You asking me to be your soldier, your muscle, your eyes. That's a lot of asks, bro."
Marcus nodded, patient. "It is."
"So let me ask you something, for real." Jason set the bottle down with a deliberate clink. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, hands clasped. "You've got all these women here. A lawyer, a fighter, a trainer, a singer. You even got twins who'd probably fight each other for the right to suck your dick. And now a stripper who's your damn CIA agent. That's a whole roster."
He paused, letting the weight settle.
"When do I get one?"
The silence stretched. Pablo's slow blink was the only movement in the room for a moment. Marcus didn't flinch, didn't look away. He just studied Jason the way he studied the maps, reading the lines and the spaces between them.
"Get one?" Marcus asked, voice even. "Or earn one?"
Jason's jaw tightened. "I been your brother since I stole candy from the corner store. You kept your mouth shut about that. I taught you to fix your posture, talk to girls, stop being a damn ghost. I have been telling you how to level up since before you could bench the bar. You think I been giving you game just 'cause I'm nice?"
"So you want a reward."
"I want what's mine." Jason's voice had an edge to it now, something raw and hungry that had been sleeping under the surface for years. "You out here living like a king, building an empire. I'm out here with the same two hands, same loyalty, and I'm still running the same tired plays. You got women throwing themselves at you. I'm still getting left on read."
Pablo shifted, his massive frame casting a long shadow across the coffee table. "He ain't wrong."
Marcus looked between them, the weight of their brotherhood pressing against the moment. He could have pushed back, lectured, talked strategy. But that wasn't the play. Not with these two. He'd known them too long for games.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, thumb sliding across the screen until he found what he was looking for. He turned it around. A photo of Jade from that night at the club, her smile sharp and knowing, her body a weapon in its own right.
"Okay. Cool. Jade's got a friend," Marcus said. "Her name's Minnie. Works at The Valley. Rick offered her to me tonight and I passed." He tucked the phone away. "She's not mine. Not yet. But she's the type who likes power, likes being close to it. You interest her, you take the lead, she's yours."
Jason's eyes narrowed. "You're just gonna hand her over?"
"I'm not handing anything over. I'm opening a door." Marcus spread his hands, his smile slow and confident. "What you do on the other side? That's your lane, brother. That's what I'm trusting you with. But you want your own woman in this empire, you better prove you can hold one down. Because the women I keep? They're not arm candy. They're assets."
Jason held his gaze for a long moment, then let out a low laugh, shaking his head. "Damn. You really did level up."
"Damn right I did. Told you I was asking you to do the same."
Jason pulled out his phone, not a flicker of hesitation in his movements. He looked at Marcus. "You got the number?"
Marcus didn't answer with words. He just picked up his own phone, tapped a few times, and Jason's phone buzzed in his hand. A contact card. Minnie. No last name, just a crown emoji next to it.
Jason stared at the screen, his thumb hovering over the call button. He looked at it the way a boxer looks at the opening bell. Then he hit the button, put it on speaker, and set the phone on the coffee table between them.
It rang twice.
"Hello?" The voice that came through was honey over gravel. Warm, curious, with a hint of amusement. "Who's this?"
"Someone who got your number from a friend of a friend," Jason said, leaning back on the couch. "Name's Jason. I'm a brother of Marcus."
A pause. Then a soft laugh. "Marcus. That big-shot who turned down my company tonight? Rick told me about him. Said he's got a whole stable of women and a plan for this city." The amusement sharpened. "So why you calling me, Jason? You trying to claim what your boy passed on?"
"I don't claim nothing that ain't offered." Jason's voice was smooth, easy. "But I hear you like power. Like being close to it. I'm the type who's got his own lane, his own ambitions. And I'm building something with my brother. I thought you might like to find out what that looks like from the inside."
Another pause. Pablo was watching with a faint, rare smile. Marcus's face was unreadable, but there was a glint in his eye.
"Inside," Minnie repeated, tasting the word. "That's a bold claim. I've heard a lot of lines in my time, Jason. Every hustler in this city thinks he's the one. What makes you different?"
Jason grinned, slow and easy. "I'm not selling you a dream. I'm selling you a seat at the table. And I ain't saying you gotta do a damn thing tonight. I'm saying you should meet me. Let me show you who I am. You decide if I'm worth your time. That's it."
The silence on the line stretched long enough that Jason shot a glance at Marcus. Marcus just gave a small nod.
"Alright," Minnie said finally, her voice dropping to something warmer. "There's a bar called Rita's. You know it? It's close to the Valley, about 15 minutes away. Tomorrow night, nine o'clock. Don't be late, Jason. And don't bring no nervous energy. I can smell that shit from a mile away."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
"Good." A smile in her voice now. "Then I'll see you tomorrow. You better be as interesting as you sound."
The line clicked dead.
Jason exhaled, long and slow, then picked up his beer and drained half of it in one pull. His hand was steady, but Pablo saw it, the slight tremor just before he lifted the bottle, that telltale rush of adrenaline.
"You just set up a date with a stripper who knows every corner of this city," Pablo rumbled, shaking his head. "You got no idea what you walking into."
"Nope." Jason grinned, setting the bottle down. "But that's the fun part, big man. Marcus got his empire. I'm about to get my own piece of it. And I ain't about to fumble it."
