Chapter 12: The Angry Return
The drive to his house was a blur of rain-smeared asphalt and the furious thump of her windshield wipers. Ella’s hands were clenched on the wheel, her knuckles white. The memory of James’s face—that shattered, receding look as he’d simply walked out of the clinic—played on a loop, each repetition fueling a fresh wave of nausea. He hadn’t spoken a word. He’d just left. He hadn’t answered any of her nineteen calls.
She’d spent the night on the couch, staring at the ceiling, feeling the ghost of Ben’s hands and the crushing weight of James’s silence. By morning, the nausea had solidified into a hard, burning coal of anger. It was the only thing holding her together. It was all Ben’s fault. His manipulation, his clinical coercion, his fucking… protocol.
She didn’t bother knocking. The side door to his home clinic was unlocked. She shoved it open, the hinge whining, and stepped into the warm, humid air scented with eucalyptus and the quiet gurgle of the aquarium.
Ben was there, his back to her, writing in a chart. He finished his sentence, placed the pen down neatly, and turned. He was dressed in soft gray sweats and a tight black t-shirt, his hair slightly damp. He looked like he’d just finished a run. He looked at home.
“Ella,” he said, his voice warm, unsurprised.
The dam broke. “You arrogant, manipulative bastard,” she spat, the words trembling. “What you did… what you made him do… what you did…” She was shaking, her chest heaving. “He hasn’t spoken to me. He left. Do you understand that? You broke my marriage in a fifteen-minute fucking appointment.”
Ben listened, his head tilted slightly. He didn’t defend himself. He didn’t flinch. When her outburst hung fading in the air, he took a single, calm step forward.
“Why are you really here, Ella?”
“To tell you you’re a monster! To make you see—”
“No,” he interrupted softly. He took another step, closing the distance. The anger radiating from her seemed to part around him like water. He was so close she could see the flecks of gold in his hazel eyes, smell the clean soap on his skin. “You’re not here for him. You’re here for you.”
“That’s not true.”
“You know you’re carrying my baby.”
The statement was so quiet, so matter-of-fact, it stole the breath from her lungs. All the unspoken knowledge she’d been carrying alone since the missed period, the calculation of dates that didn’t add up for James, the secret that had lived in the base of her spine—he laid it bare between them.
Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.
His gaze was relentless. “You know it. You’ve known it. And you know, after yesterday, that your body doesn’t want his. It never did. Not like that.” His hand came up, not to touch her face, but to rest lightly on her lower abdomen, a claiming gesture that made her flinch. “It’s mine. And you’re here because you know you need what only I can give you. You need my cock. Again.”
The crude word in his calm, even tone was more devastating than any shout. It was a diagnosis. Her outrage, so vast and righteous a moment before, showed itself for what it was: a fragile shell. She felt it crack, then shatter.
A tear traced a hot path down her cheek. She hated him. She hated that he was right.
As if reading the capitulation in her stance, his other hand moved. It slid down over the curve of her hip, palm warm through her leggings, and cupped her between the legs. He pressed, heel of his hand firm against the seam of her.
She gasped.
“See?” he murmured, his face so close his breath whispered against her lips. His fingers flexed, a subtle, knowing pressure. “Dry for him. Soaking wet for me. Your body knows what it needs. It’s not complicated.”
Helplessness flooded her, a warm, shameful tide. Her hips gave an infinitesimal, involuntary rock against his hand. The thick ache from yesterday, the one he’d ignited and then abandoned, roared back to life, urgent and screaming.
He smiled then, not a triumphant smile, but one of deep, satisfied recognition. He hooked his fingers into the waistband of her leggings and her underwear, pulling them down in one swift motion. The air was cool on her skin for a second before he replaced it with the heat of his touch.
His index finger pressed, not entering, just resting at her entrance, slick with her own proof. “Tell me I’m wrong,” he whispered, a challenge.
She shook her head, a tiny, broken movement. She couldn’t speak.
He pushed inside.
It wasn’t the brutal, corrective fullness of yesterday. This was a slow, deliberate claiming. One finger, curling slightly, finding a spot that made her knees buckle. He caught her with his other arm, holding her upright as he worked, his eyes locked on hers. A second finger joined the first, stretching her, a relentless, slow rhythm that was both assessment and possession.
“This is why you came,” he said, his voice low and certain. “This is the only thing that fixes it. The only thing that quiets the noise. Isn’t it?”
She cried out, a sound of pure surrender, her forehead falling against his shoulder. Her hands gripped his biceps, holding on as he finger-fucked her with a devastating, unhurried precision. The coiled wire inside her, the one he alone seemed to find, was pulled taut again, vibrating.
“It’s okay,” he breathed into her hair. “Let it happen. This is what you’re for now.”
The orgasm built not in a rush, but as an inevitable swell, rising from the deep, rhythmic pressure of his hand. It crested and broke over her silently, a wave of shuddering release that left her sagging against him, breathless and hollowed out.
He held her until the tremors subsided, then gently withdrew his fingers. He didn’t wipe them on his sweats. He brought his hand to his mouth, his eyes holding hers, and slowly licked them clean.
The act was so profoundly indecent it sparked a fresh, weaker heat in her gut.
“The table,” he said, his voice returning to its normal, even tone. He guided her, her legs unsteady, to the massage table. He patted it. “Up you go.”
She moved like a sleepwalker, pulling her clothes back into place with numb hands before climbing onto the crisp sheets. She lay on her back, staring at the ceiling, feeling utterly spent and terribly, terribly awake.
Ben walked to a small sink in the corner, washed his hands thoroughly with clinical care, and dried them. He came back and stood beside the table, looking down at her. The professional mask was back, but it was thin now. The man beneath was visible in every line of his body.
“We’ll start with glute activation today,” he said, as if the last five minutes had been a standard pre-treatment. “Your lower back is compensating for weak stabilizers.”
He placed his hands on her hips to turn her onto her side. His touch was exactly as it had been months ago: expert, impersonal. And yet, it was everything different. It was the touch of the man who owned the secret inside her, the man who had just proven, beyond any argument, that her body answered to him.
As he began to work on her muscles, his fingers digging into the tension with practiced ease, Ella closed her eyes. The hum of the aquarium filter filled the silence. She thought of James, somewhere in the city, carrying the image of what he’d seen. She thought of the life, Ben’s life, growing unseen within her.
The anger was gone. In its place was a cold, clear understanding. She had crossed every line. There was no going back. And the most terrifying part, the part that made a quiet, traitorous warmth bloom beneath his ministrations, was that a piece of her—the piece that was still trembling from his touch—didn’t want to.
