Chapter 2: The Second Session
The two days between Monday and Thursday stretched and snapped with a strange, elastic tension. Ella did the shoulder exercises twice a day, feeling the ghost of Ben’s instructions in each movement. She slept fitfully, the cool sheets a poor substitute. James called from his hotel in Frankfurt, his voice tinny with distance and fatigue. They talked about his meeting, the weather, the dry cleaner. The conversation was a sketch of a marriage, all outline, no color. When she hung up, the silence in their bedroom was absolute. On Thursday, she changed her outfit three times. Nothing felt right.Everything felt like a signal. She settled on a simple black zip-front hoodie and yoga pants, telling herself it was practical.Neutral.The clinic smelled the same. Antiseptic, citrus. Her heart was a trapped bird against her ribs. When Ben opened the door to the waiting room, he gave her a small, professional smile.“Ella. Right on time.”
His hair was slightly damp at the temples, as if he’d just washed his face. He wore the same navy scrubs, but today a faint shadow of stubble darkened his jaw. It made him look older.More real.
“How’s the shoulder been?” he asked, leading her into the same small room.“Better, actually. The exercises help.” Her voice sounded steady. Good.“Great.We’ll build on that today.” He motioned to the table. “I’m going to need better access to your upper back and scapula. For this session, it would be best if you removed your top entirely. You can keep your bra on, of course. I’ll give you a drape.”
He turned his back, granting her privacy, and pulled a thin, white cotton sheet from a cabinet. He placed it on the table beside her.
Her fingers felt thick and clumsy on the zipper of her hoodie. The sound was obscenely loud. She shrugged it off, then pulled her t-shirt over her head. The air was cool. She hurriedly lay face down on the table, her cheek pressed against the crisp paper. She heard him move.“Alright. I’m just going to place this over you.” The sheet whispered over her skin, settling across her lower back and legs. He folded it down, just to the waistband of her yoga pants, leaving her entire back bare. Her bra, a practical beige thing she regretted now, felt flimsy, its clasp a glaring bullseye between her shoulder blades.
His hands landed on her, warmer than last time, as if he’d been holding them under hot water. He started at the very top of her spine, just below her hairline. There was no small talk. He worked in a focused silence, his thumbs and fingers digging into the meat of her shoulders with a confident, almost ruthless pressure. It hurt. It was a deep, satisfying ache that made her exhale in long, slow breaths.
“You’re still incredibly tight here,” he murmured, more to himself than to her. His hands slid lower, following the line of her trapezius toward her scapula. His fingers slipped under the edge of the sheet, tracing the wing of her shoulder blade.Every inch of skin he touched felt singed, hyper-aware.
He worked for what felt like a long time, his rhythm methodical and relentless. The pain began to blur into something else, a heavy warmth spreading from his points of contact outward, loosening something deeper than muscle.
“Okay,” he said softly.“I need you to turn over onto your back, please. Keep the drape over your front.”
She turned, clutching the sheet to her chest as she rotated. The paper crackled in protest. The ceiling tiles were pocked with tiny holes. She stared at them, trying to anchor herself.
He repositioned the sheet, tucking it carefully under her arms, preserving her modesty while leaving her shoulders and collarbone exposed. He stood at the head of the table, his hips level with her temple. He began to work on her anterior deltoid, his fingers probing the joint of her shoulder. His touch was clinical, precise.
Then his hand drifted inward, toward her sternum. His fingertips pressed into the taut, weary muscles at the very top of her chest, millimeters from the soft swell of her breasts held behind the sheet and bra. She held her breath.
“You carry a lot of weight here,” he said, his voice low and even.“Women with your… physique.A pronounced chest, a narrower back. The pectoral muscles are often over-engaged, pulling everything forward. Creates a chain of tension.”
He said it like a textbook fact. But the words, “your physique,” hung in the air, personal and weighted. His fingers continued their slow, probing massage along the sensitive border where firm muscle yielded to soft tissue. A shiver, entirely separate from the chill in the room, ran through her.
She dared to glance up.He was looking at his hands, his brow furrowed in concentration. But his breathing had changed. It was slightly deeper, less measured. And there, just at the level of her eyes, the loose fabric of his scrub pants showed a distinct, undeniable swell. It was pronounced, a clear ridge of thickening flesh. She snapped her gaze back to the ceiling, her face burning. He was hard. Just from talking about her body, from touching her here.
The knowledge detonated in her gut, a hot wave of shock and a terrifying, thrilling validation. It wasn’t just in her head. The current she felt was real. He felt it too, and his body, for all his professional control, was betraying him.He cleared his throat, subtly shifting his stance. “I’m going to have you do some resistance exercises now,” he said, his voice regaining its even keel, though a new strain tightened the edges. He guided her through movements, his hands on her arm providing gentle opposition. But the atmosphere had cracked open. Every brush of his fingers, every time he leaned over her, felt charged and intentional.
When the session ended, he helped her sit up, his hand a steadying pressure on her draped back. “Same time next week?” he asked, stepping away to give her space.“Yes.” The word was a dry leaf.
She dressed with her back to him, her hands trembling. She could still feel the map his hands had drawn on her skin, the epicenter of that phantom touch just above her breast. And she could still see, burned onto her retinas, the clear evidence of his arousal.
She walked out of the clinic on legs that didn’t quite feel like hers. The autumn sunlight was startlingly bright. In the safety of her car, she finally let out a shaky breath.
A deep, aching throb had settled low in her belly, a pulse that echoed the remembered pressure of his hands. She shifted in the driver’s seat, and a shocking slickness met the sensation. Her cheeks flushed with a fresh, shameful heat. She was wet.Profoundly, undeniably wet. It was a physical confession her body had made without her consent, a stark, dripping counterpoint to all her careful thoughts.
She started the car, the engine’s rumble failing to drown out the riot in her blood. The phantom citrus scent seemed to cling to her. She drove away slowly, the empty street blurring, her mind already hurtling forward seven days, toward the next session, the next crack in the dam.
