Chapter 6: The Confession
The click of the lock was the loudest sound Ella had ever heard. It sealed them into the soft-lit room, the world outside fading to a distant murmur. The air, usually crisp with antiseptic, felt thick and slow-moving.
Ben turned from the door. He hadn’t even set up the table. He just leaned against it, arms crossed, watching her. His scrubs were a pale blue, his athletic frame relaxed but somehow poised. “So,” he said. His voice was calm, conversational. “How was the homework?”
Ella’s mouth was dry. She’d practiced casual lies in the mirror. It was fine. Helpful. The truth felt like a stone on her tongue. “I did it,” she said, the words barely a whisper.
“I know you did it.” He uncrossed his arms, took a single step closer. The space between them crackled. “I asked how it was.”
She looked at the floor, at the neat lines of the tiles. Her heart was a frantic bird against her ribs. “It was… effective.”
“Look at me, Ella.”
She forced her gaze up. His hazel eyes were no longer warm; they were focused, intense, seeing straight through the fragile wall of her composure. He waited.
The confession tumbled out, raw and unpretty. “I thought about you. Your hands. The way your voice sounded on the phone. That… pressure against my side last time. I couldn’t think of anything else.” She sucked in a trembling breath. “It felt like cheating. And I didn’t stop.”
He didn’t move. Didn’t smile. Just absorbed her words, his expression unreadable. Then he closed the remaining distance. He didn’t touch her, not yet. She could feel the heat radiating from him, smell the clean linen and faint cedar of his skin.
“It’s not cheating,” he said, his voice low. “It’s rehabilitation. You’re remembering what your body is for. What it needs.” His finger came up, traced the stiff line of her collarbone above her v-neck tee. The touch was feather-light, devastating. “Tension here. And here.” His thumb brushed the frantic pulse in her throat.
She shuddered. Every nerve ending was screaming.
“The homework was phase one,” he continued, his hand sliding down to her shoulder, squeezing the tight muscle there. “Passive observation. Now we move to active treatment.” His gaze held hers. “Do you want to continue?”
It was the only clinical question he’d asked, and it was the most dangerous one. She knew what continue meant now. It wasn’t about her lower back.
“Yes,” she breathed. There was no hesitation. The guilt was still there, a cold knot in her stomach, but it was drowned out by the roaring in her ears, the ache between her legs that had been constant since Tuesday night.
“Good.”
His hands were suddenly firm, purposeful. He guided her the few steps to the treatment table. “Up,” he instructed, not a request.
She hoisted herself onto the paper-covered vinyl, the sound obscenely loud. He stood between her knees, which had fallen open naturally, and placed his hands on her thighs. His palms were warm through her thin cotton leggings.
“The sheet,” he said, recalling his last promise. “We don’t need it today. But these,” his fingers hooked in the waistband of her leggings, “are in the way.”
Ella’s mind went blank, then white with panic. This was it. The line. She was straddling it, about to topple over. She looked into his eyes, searching for doubt, for mockery. She saw only steady certainty.
“Okay,” she whispered.
He helped her, his movements efficient but not rushed. He peeled the leggings down her hips, her thighs, past her knees. The cool air hit her skin. She lay there in her tee and plain black underwear, feeling monstrously exposed, her curves pale against the stark paper.
Ben’s eyes travelled down her body, a slow, thorough assessment. There was no leer, no vulgar appreciation. It was more dispassionate, and somehow more intimate. “You hold your stress in your hips, your glutes,” he said, as if reading from a chart. “It’s all connected. The back pain, the frustration. It’s one locked system.”
He placed his hands on her bare hips, his thumbs pressing into the dip of her pelvis. She jumped at the contact, her skin flushing.
“Breathe,” he commanded softly.
She tried. His hands began to work, kneading the tense flesh of her hips, then sliding down to the tops of her thighs. His touch was deeper, more invasive than before. It wasn’t painful. It was a relentless, perfect pressure that speared straight to her core. She bit her lip to stop a sound.
“Don’t hide from it,” he said, his voice rough at the edges. “This is the work. Let me hear it.”
A small whimper escaped her as his thumbs swept along the sensitive inner seams of her thighs. Her hips lifted off the table of their own volition.
He made a low, approving sound. “There. That’s the pathway.” One hand slid up, under the hem of her shirt, settling flat and hot on the flutter of her stomach. The other stayed low, his fingertips now tracing the edge of her underwear, along the crease where her thigh met her body.
Ella’s head thrashed side to side. “Ben…”
“I’m here,” he murmured, leaning over her, his face close to hers. His breath fanned her cheek. “This is the treatment. Let it go. Give me the tension.”
His finger slipped beneath the elastic, a mere centimetre, brushing curls. She cried out, back arching. The last thread of her resistance snapped.
His eyes darkened, finally shedding the last vestige of professional distance. What remained was pure, hungry intent. “You have no idea how much you’re holding onto,” he growled, his mouth a whisper from her ear. “Thursday’s just for assessment. To see how you respond.”
He pulled back, his hand retreating from under her clothes, leaving her skin burning. He looked down at her, flushed and trembling and utterly unraveled on his table. A slow, deliberate smile touched his lips—the first truly personal expression she’d seen from him.
That smile unlocked something reckless in her chest, a forward tilt in her blood. He didn’t look away from her as his hand returned, not to the safe territory of her hip but to the clasp of her underwear.
“Lift up,” he said, his voice casual, as if asking for a pillow.
Her body obeyed before her mind could form a protest. She raised her hips, and he slid the fabric down and off, discarding it without a glance. The exposure was absolute. The paper rustled beneath her, a cold, clinical counterpoint to the heat flooding her skin.
He placed a hand on her knee, gently pushing her leg wider. The gesture was so matter-of-fact, so devoid of poetic pretense, that it felt more violating than a caress. This was just anatomy. His anatomy, her anatomy.
“Just assessing your range of motion,” he said, but his eyes gleamed with a dark humour that betrayed the lie.
His fingers began on the outside of her thigh, a slow, circular pressure that was all business. He worked inward by increments, his touch a studied, purposeful torment. She gripped the edges of the table, the paper tearing slightly under her nails. Her breaths were shallow, ragged things.
“You’re still holding back,” he observed, his thumb skating high along her inner thigh.“The homework was a start. This is the practical exam.”
“Ben, I…”
“What?” He didn’t pause his movement. “Say it.”
“We shouldn’t.”
“Probably not.” His finger finally, casually, brushed through her folds. She jerked, a bolt of pure sensation shooting up her spine. He made a low, considering sound. “But you’re wet enough to swim in, Ella. Your body’s already decided.”
The crude observation, delivered in his calm, clinical tone, shattered her last pretense. She moaned, the sound long and helpless. He took it as permission. His touch became direct, skilled, and utterly focused. There was no tentative exploration. He knew exactly where to press, how to circle, when to apply a firmer, rhythmic pressure. It was physiotherapy of the most fundamental kind—he was locating the precise point of tension and working it ruthlessly towards release.
“See?” he murmured, his other hand splayed on her belly to keep her from writhing off the table. “This knot right here. This is the core of it.”
She was unraveling, coming apart under his hands. The guilt was still there, a faint, cold echo, but it was drowned out by the roaring need he was stoking. Her heels scrambled for purchase on the table’s edge. The world narrowed to the four walls of this room, to the smell of him and her, to the obscene, slick sound of his fingers working her.Her thoughts splintered. James’s indifferent face blurred, replaced by Ben’s focused intensity above her. The empty bed, the client dinners, the aching loneliness—all of it was fuel now, combusting under his expert touch.
“That’s it,” he urged, his breath warm against her temple. His rhythm never faltered.“Let it go. Give it to me.”
The coil inside her tightened beyond bearing, a crystalline point of pure need. She cried out, a sound ripped from a place she’d forgotten existed, as the release tore through her in violent, waves. It was a convulsive, surrendering shock, wringing her empty.
As the last tremor subsided, she lay spent, gasping, the paper beneath her damp with sweat. His fingers withdrew slowly. He looked at her, his own breathing slightly deepened, a faint sheen on his brow.
He brought his fingers to his lips, never breaking eye contact, and tasted.A simple, vulgar, undeniable act.
“Good,” he said, his voice husky. Then he leaned close, his mouth almost touching her ear. “Next week, the real treatment begins.”
