Chapter 11: Academic Betrayal

The fluorescent lights buzzed like trapped flies overhead. Dust motes swirled in the weak beams filtering through the high library windows. Mark hunched over his physics textbook, the equations blurring. He’d been staring at the same page for ten minutes. Since she walked in.

Her giggle cut through the quiet hum of the library, sharp and artificial, bouncing off the stacks. Amy. Wearing that tiny skirt, the black fishnets he knew snagged easily. Ignoring his hesitant wave completely. Aiming straight for the back carrel where Chad sprawled, legs wide, an arrogant smirk already forming.

Mark’s pencil snapped. A clean break. He stared at the two halves in his palm. Graphite dust smudged his skin. His stomach clenched.

Back there, the dim carrel felt like another world. Amy perched on Chad’s thigh, his arm draped possessively around her waist. His thumb traced the edge of the dark, fading handprint visible just below the hem of her skirt, stark against her skin beneath the fishnet. Tiffany leaned against the desk nearby, chewing gum, watching with vacant amusement.

"Seriously, though," Chad drawled, his voice carrying just enough, "Saw that dumbass Henderson trying to chat you up after chem lab yesterday." He squeezed Amy's hip, fingers pressing into the bruised skin. She flinched, almost imperceptibly, then giggled again. High-pitched. Forced. "Like, what did he even think was gonna happen?"

Tiffany snorted. "Ew. Total nerd vibes. Doesn't he like, live in the basement of the engineering building?" She popped her gum.

Chad chuckled, low and mean. "Exactly. Probably thinks girls like it when they talk about... what was it, Amy? Thermodynamics?" He tilted his head, looking down at her. "You tell him the only heat you're interested in comes from a real man?"

Amy’s cheeks flushed pink. Not embarrassment. Excitement. A spark flickered in her eyes – that strange, unsettling mix of resentment and craving. She glanced over Chad’s shoulder, towards the front stacks where Mark sat frozen. Their eyes met for a split second. Hers flickered away, fast. Guilty? Or just... blank?

She turned back to Chad, plastering on a wide smile. "Oh my god," she drawled, her voice higher, breathier than it used to be. "Like, totally! He was sooo boring. Rambling about entropy, or whatever." She tossed her hair, the recently lightened locks catching the fluorescent light. "I just walked away. Duh."

Chad grinned wolfishly. "Good girl. Knew you had sense." His hand slid lower, cupping her rear possessively over the thin skirt. "Smart enough to know your place." He leaned in, whispering something just loud enough for Mark, straining to hear in the unnatural silence, to catch. "Unlike some other useless things..." His eyes flickered towards Mark’s carrel for just an instant. "...who just take up space."

Tiffany giggled. Amy’s laugh exploded again, louder this time, shrill and echoing in the quiet library. It wasn't just agreement. It was delight. A sharp, harsh sound that scraped down Mark’s spine. She laughed at Chad calling her useless. At the implication hanging thick in the air.

"Seriously, Chad!" Amy gasped between laughs, leaning into him, seeking his approval like a drug. "Sooo harsh!" But there was no protest in it. Only pleasure. The need to be acknowledged. Degraded. Owned.

Mark felt the broken pencil halves dig into his palm. He saw the way Chad’s fingers pressed into the bruise he’d given her. He heard Amy’s laugh, bright and cruel. The girl who used to argue about quantum mechanics with fierce passion, who wore faded band tees and fingerless gloves, who loved him, Mark… That girl was buried deep. Covered in cheap makeup and desperation.

Suddenly, Amy slid off Chad’s lap. She stretched, a deliberate, cat-like movement that pushed her chest out. "Okay, gotta pee," she announced, her voice still dripping that false-bright valley girl lilt. "Be right back, babe." She brushed her hand over Chad’s shoulder.

As she walked towards the restrooms at the front, she passed Mark’s carrel again. She didn’t look at him. Her walk had changed. A deliberate sway, an awareness of being watched. She paused momentarily near his desk, rifling unnecessarily in her tiny pink backpack. He caught the faint, cloying scent of her new perfume – vanilla and something synthetic. Cheap.

Her eyes finally met his. Just for a second. Flat. Distant. Then a small, tight smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Hey, Mark," she murmured, her voice suddenly lower, almost normal. A ghost of the old Amy. "Just... studying?" Her gaze flickered back towards Chad’s carrel, then down at her own fishnet-clad legs. "Totes boring, right?"

She didn't wait for an answer. Just turned and click-clacked away on impractical heels. Leaving Mark alone with the dust motes, the buzzing lights, the broken pencil in his hand, and the echoing sound of her laugh. Chad’s laugh. The sound of her agreeing she was useless.

The heavy library door swung shut behind her with a soft thud. Mark stared at the spot where she’d vanished. He didn’t move. Couldn’t move. The silence pressed in, thick with the scent of paper and decay. He was still sitting there, motionless, when she returned minutes later, bypassing him completely, her giggles already reigniting as she slid back onto Chad’s waiting lap.
