Chapter 17: Public Performance
The coffee shop air hung thick. Burnt beans. Steamed milk. Underneath, something sharper: sweat, cheap cologne, the electric buzz of anticipation. Amy felt it prickle across her skin, amplified by the familiar chemical thrum beneath her thoughts. Her phone was propped precariously on a stack of discarded textbooks, angled low. The screen glowed, tiny hearts and fire emojis cascading upwards.
"Okay, chat! Like, who's ready for a little lunchtime motivation?" Amy chirped, her voice pitched high, breathy. She leaned towards the camera, the deep V of her tank top gapping, showcasing the hard curve of her augmented breasts. Behind her, the usual coffee shop murmur had dipped, replaced by low whistles and scattered snickers.
Mark sat hunched in a corner booth, physics textbook open but unread. The familiar ache from seeing her on the quad yesterday – the way she’d ground against that tree, savoring his pain – was a fresh bruise. He’d come here seeking the illusion of normalcy, of the girl who used to debate thermodynamics with him over chai lattes. He was staring at a complex equation, but the symbols blurred. His fingers tightened around his mug. Cold now.
Amy shifted position. Her tiny denim shorts, frayed at the seams, rode painfully high. The elastic band of her fluorescent pink thong was clearly visible above the waistband. She planted her hands on the sticky linoleum floor near the condiment station, arching her back. A collective intake of breath from the cluster of Sigma Chi guys watching nearby.
"Music, Chad?" she called over her shoulder, a coy lilt in her voice. Chad, leaning against the counter, smirked. He tapped his phone. A heavy, pulsing bassline erupted, drowning out the indie folk playing over the shop speakers.
Amy began. Not dancing. Twerking. An aggressive, rhythmic bounce that sent shockwaves through her augmented hips and ass. Each jounce was deliberate, violent. Shh-thump. Shh-thump. The denim strained. Her thong became fully exposed, a narrow strip of neon against the deep tan of her surgically sculpted lower back. Pain lanced through her pelvis with each impact, a sharp counterpoint to the bass. She moaned, not quietly. A theatrical, high-pitched gasp that echoed in the suddenly silent shop. Heads swiveled. Baristas froze.
"Fuck yeah, Amy!" a frat brother yelled, pulling a crumpled five-dollar bill from his pocket. He stepped forward and, with a crude laugh, tucked it into the waistband of her thong, his fingers lingering against the small of her back. Amy giggled, a sound like breaking glass. "Ooh, thank you, babe! Like, keep 'em coming!"
Another bill followed. A ten. Then another five. Fingers brushed her skin. Chuckles. Whispers. The phone screen was a blur of frantic scrolling comments and exploding digital gifts. Her follower count ticked upwards. 10,001. 10,005. The validation was a physical warmth, spreading from her core, hotter than the ache, drowning the last, faint whispers of the girl who would have vomited at this spectacle.
Mark watched, paralyzed. The equation dissolved completely. He saw the cash being stuffed into her underwear. Saw the hungry stares. Saw the way she arched into the touches, moaning again for the camera – "Ohhh, you guys are, like, making me so wet!" – her voice artificially sweet. His mug slipped from numb fingers, clattering onto the table, coffee splashing across his textbook. The sound was small, insignificant against the bass and Amy's performance, but her head snapped around.
Her eyes, glazed with the performance and the chemical haze, locked onto his. A slow, wide smile spread across her face. Not friendly. Triumphant. Cruel. She didn’t stop moving. If anything, the bounce became more pronounced, more vulgar, directed at him now. The thong strained. The cash fluttered.
"Marky!" she called out, her voice cutting through the music Chad hadn't paused. "Like, enjoying the show? Gonna tip your girl?"
The frat boys roared with laughter. Mark felt the heat rush to his face, a wave of nausea rising. He pushed himself up, legs unsteady. He walked towards her, the small distance feeling like a mile. The smell of sweat and cheap cologne hit him. He stopped a few feet away, his voice a raw scrape. "Amy. Stop this. Please. Just...stop."
She paused, mid-bounce, one hand braced on the floor, the other holding her phone steady. She tilted her head. A parody of innocence. "Stop what, babe?" The 'babe' was a blade. "It's just content. Like, chill." She blew him a kiss, a dismissive puff of air. Then, deliberately, she turned back to the phone screen, her smile radiant, predatory. "Sorry for the interruption, chat! Where were we?" She dropped back down, resuming the violent twerk. Shh-thump. Shh-thump.
Chad tossed another bill. It landed on her exposed lower back. She wriggled, making it slide lower. "Mmm, feels so good, thank you!" she cooed into the phone.
Mark stood there, exposed. The center of a grotesque circus ring. The coffee shop patrons were silent now, watching him, some with pity, most with morbid fascination. The bass pounded. Amy moaned, loud and fake. "Ohhh, yes! Like that! You guys are the best! OMG, I'm gonna cum!" Her voice hit a shrill peak, purely performative, echoing off the walls.
He couldn’t breathe. The scent of coffee was suddenly suffocating, mixed with the stench of his own humiliation and her desperate display. He took a stumbling step back. Then another. His vision blurred, not with tears this time, but with a profound, gut-churning shame for her. For the brilliant light extinguished. For the obscene caricature grinding on the dirty floor for pocket change and pixelated hearts.
He turned. Walked away. Didn't look back. The sound of Amy's exaggerated moan – "I'm coming! I'm coming for you, chat! Ahhh!" – followed him out the door, mingling with the tinny bass and the raucous laughter of the frat boys. The bright sunlight outside felt alien, harsh. He leaned against the brick wall, gulping air, the phantom sound of her voice and the sight of those dollar bills tucked into her thong seared onto his retinas. Inside, a notification ding sounded loudly from her phone, followed by another cascade of digital applause only she could see.
