Chapter 13: Wax and Whispers
The wax ripped. Amy flinched, eyes watering. A sharp sting radiated across her forehead. "Hold still, honey," the technician murmured, pressing a cold pad against the inflamed skin. Amy blinked, staring at the stranger in the mirror. Thick, expressive brows were gone. In their place: two thin, startled arches, permanently questioning. Like the posters on the salon wall. Like Chad’s preference.
She flexed her fingers. The absurdly long acrylic nails clicked softly against each other. Pink. Shimmering. Useless for opening jars, typing properly, or handling delicate lab equipment. She remembered the microbiology midterm she’d bombed last week. The Petri dishes felt impossibly clumsy under these talons. The thought drifted away, unimportant. The chemical bite of fresh bleach hung heavy in the humid air, mixing with the cloying vanilla body mist she’d sprayed liberally after the piercing. The scent was her oxygen now. Familiar. Safe. Feminine.
Her gaze drifted down. The new navel ring glinted under the harsh salon lights. A tiny silver hoop. It felt alien. Exposed. A permanent mark. She traced the tender skin around it with a clumsy fingertip. Pain radiated, sharp and clean. Good pain. Proof.
Beside her, a woman with impossibly blonde extensions sighed dramatically into her phone. "Ugh, Jason is, like, totally ghosting me again? After I got the Brazilian and the highlights?" Her voice was a nasal whine. Amy watched her reflection pout. There was a strange comfort in the shared ritual, the unspoken understanding etched in the lines of dissatisfaction around the woman’s eyes. They were all here to be unmade. Remade. Approved.
The cold pad numbed Amy’s throbbing brow. She watched the technician wipe away stray wax, revealing the stark, unnatural arches. "So much better, right?" chirped the woman beside her, snapping her gum. She had hair like spun gold, impossibly long and bright, cascading over the shoulders of her leopard-print robe. Her reflection met Amy’s in the mirror, eyes wide and artificially bright. "Guys totally notice brows first. After the hair, obvi."
Amy flexed her pink nails again. They felt heavy. Alien. "Yeah," she murmured, the word sounding thin. "Chad... he likes them thin." Saying his name sent a familiar, sickening thrill through her stomach. The memory of his voice – No one wants a brainy bitch, babe – echoed, louder than the salon’s blow dryers. She touched her dark, messy bun. It felt wrong now. Dull.
"Girl, that color?" The blonde woman wrinkled her nose, leaning closer. Her perfume was aggressively sweet, like candy left in the sun. "It’s, like, so freshman year. You need pop." She flicked her own platinum extensions. "This is the vibe. Platinum. Long. Makes your eyes look huge." She gestured vaguely towards Amy’s face. "And maybe... a little something? For the forehead?" She tapped her own unnaturally smooth brow.
Amy stared at her reflection. The thick brows were gone. The dark hair felt like a relic. A symbol of the girl who cared about Petri dishes and midterms. That girl felt distant. Weak. Chad’s disgust felt immediate. Potent. The technician hovered nearby, holding a color chart bursting with icy blondes. "We could do a full bleach and extensions today," she offered. "Transformative."
The blonde woman nodded vigorously. "Yaaas! Total transformation! Think of Chad’s face!" She giggled, a high-pitched sound. "He’ll die. You’ll be, like, perfection. No more... you know." She lowered her voice conspiratorially. "Brainy."
The word landed like a physical blow. Amy flinched. The ache wasn't just in her brows anymore; it was deep in her chest, a hollow yearning to be seen. To be wanted. To erase the awkwardness Chad despised. The salon lights glared. The chemical smell intensified. Her navel ring felt cold against her skin. She looked at the color chart, then back at the stranger in the mirror wearing thin brows and trembling lips. The dark-haired girl looked pathetic. Unlovable. Brainy bitch. The echo was deafening now.
"Do it," Amy whispered, her voice barely audible over the salon buzz. Then louder, forcing certainty she didn't feel: "Platinum. As long as possible." She met the blonde woman’s approving gaze in the mirror. A flicker of something like camaraderie passed between them. Fellow soldiers in the war against imperfection. Amy swallowed hard, the vanilla mist suddenly cloying. "And... the Botox. For the full face." The words tasted strange. Final. The technician smiled, already mixing the potent bleach. The blonde woman beamed. "Yaaas queen! Welcome to the bright side!" Amy closed her eyes as the cold bleach paste touched her scalp, the sting a welcome penance.
