Chapter 20: First Reactions
The plastic tray hit the floor with a sharp clatter. Macaroni and cheese splattered Mark’s sneakers. He didn’t notice. His eyes were locked onto his sister. Jenny walked towards them, pigtails bouncing with each step, but it was the deliberate dip of her low-slung jeans that held him frozen. A thin strip of lace thong peeked above the denim waistband, stark against her skin. Her midriff was bare beneath a cropped white t-shirt, the neckline loose enough to reveal the delicate pink lace edging of her bra and a tempting swell of cleavage.
Amy’s giggle cut through the cafeteria din, sharp and triumphant. She nudged Jenny. "See?" she hissed, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "See how they look at you now?"
Jenny felt the heat flood her cheeks. Her spine instinctively straightened, shoulders pulling back, stomach sucking in tight under the weight of dozens of male stares tracking their progress. It was a familiar sensation, being looked at, but this felt different. Heavier. Dirtier. A low murmur rippled through the nearby tables as they passed.
"Damn," someone muttered appreciatively.
"New flavor," another voice chuckled.
Mark flinched, his face pale. "Jenny," he started, his voice strained, "what are you wearing?"
Jenny opened her mouth, ready to snap back, to tell him it was none of his damn business, that she wore what she wanted. But the words dissolved on her tongue. A strange fog seemed to cloud her thoughts. The defiance she usually wore like armor felt slippery, distant. Instead, she just blushed harder, looking down at her own exposed waistband.
Amy steered Jenny firmly away from Mark’s bewildered stare. "C'mon," she chirped, pulling Jenny towards a noisy table occupied by three frat guys Mark vaguely recognized from Chad's circle. "Let's sit with people who actually appreciate the view."
Mark stood rooted, tray forgotten on the floor, watching his sister be led away. He saw Jenny hesitate for a fraction of a second before Amy pushed her down onto a bench between two broad-shouldered guys. Amy slid in beside her, beaming.
One of the guys, blond with thick forearms resting on the table, leaned sideways, his gaze fixed unapologetically on Jenny’s chest. "Well, hello there," he drawled, a slow grin spreading. "Didn't see you around before. That top working overtime, huh?" His eyes dipped pointedly to the visible pink lace edging her bra.
Jenny felt a fresh wave of heat. Her usual retort – sharp, dismissive – wouldn't form. It was like trying to grasp smoke. She managed a weak, flustered smile, her hands twisting in her lap. The urge to pull her shirt up, to cover herself, was strong, but a competing, unfamiliar impulse held her still. A craving for the attention, however crude.
Another guy, dark-haired with a smirk, leaned forward. "Seriously, though. That's some prime real estate on display. Bet it gets cold." He winked. "Need someone to warm you up?"
Laughter erupted from the table. Amy giggled again, nudging Jenny conspiratorially. "Told you they'd notice."
Jenny’s blush deepened to crimson. She stared at the scratched laminate tabletop, the half-eaten burgers, the sweating soda cans. The crude comments landed like physical blows, each one chipping away at her composure. She felt exposed, objectified… and yet, a traitorous warmth spread through her belly. The validation, however base, felt… good. Needed. It scared her.
"Hey," the blond guy continued, tapping his finger near her elbow. "You gonna say anything? Or just sit there looking pretty?" His eyes roamed freely over her bare midriff, lingering on the waistband of her thong. "That little pink string peeking out… cute. Real cute."
The third guy, quieter until now, chuckled low. "Yeah, cute. Like the whole package. Bet you taste as sweet as you look."
Jenny flinched. The words were vile. Degrading. She knew they were vile. She should stand up. Slap him. Dump a drink over his head. Walk away. But her limbs felt leaden. Her throat tightened. All she could manage was a shaky intake of breath. The defiance that defined her was buried under a suffocating blanket of this strange, desperate need for their approval. Their eyes on her skin felt like a brand, marking her as theirs to comment on, to desire.
She risked a glance towards Mark. He stood alone by the spilled food, his expression a mixture of horror, confusion, and impotent rage. Seeing him only intensified the confusing swirl inside her – shame warring with that insidious, growing hunger for the very attention that shamed her. Her fingers trembled against the cool tabletop. She couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Could only sit, trapped between the crude laughter of the frat guys, Amy’s smug satisfaction, and the terrifying realization that something fundamental inside her was broken. The will to fight was gone, replaced by a hollow ache for their leering eyes.
Mark’s fists clenched, knuckles white against the orange plastic tray still lying on the floor. He took a step towards the table, the macaroni smear on his shoe forgotten. "Jenny," he started again, louder, voice cracking. "Come on. Let's go." He couldn't just leave her there.
Amy shot him a look dripping with contempt. "Buzz off, Mark," she sneered, flipping her hair. "We're busy." She turned back to the dark-haired frat guy, batting her eyelashes. "Right, Todd?"
"Totally busy," Todd agreed, his eyes never leaving Jenny's cleavage. He leaned closer, his breath warm and smelling of cheap beer. "So, Jenny. You like what you see here? Or you just enjoy teasing?"
Jenny swallowed hard. The fog in her brain thickened, muffling her outrage. She felt the weight of their stares, hot and heavy. A strange flutter replaced her anger, a confusing pulse of warmth low in her belly. Her defiance was a ship disappearing into mist. "I... I don't know," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the cafeteria din. The admission felt like a betrayal.
The blond guy, Brock, snorted. "Don't know? Bullshit. You dressed like that for a reason, sweetheart." He tapped the exposed strip of lace above her jeans with a thick finger, making her flinch. "This screams 'look at me'. We're looking. You happy now?"
Laughter erupted again. Amy giggled, high-pitched and approving. Jenny felt tears pricking her eyes, but a deeper, shaming part of her basked in their attention. Her usual sharp retorts were sand slipping through her fingers. She managed a tiny, jerky nod, avoiding Mark’s horrified gaze. Her cheeks burned, yet the warmth in her core spread.
Mark took another step, his face pale. "That's enough. Jenny, get up." His voice trembled with anger and fear.
Brock waved a dismissive hand without looking away from Jenny. "Relax, dude. She's fine. Aren't you, gorgeous?" He hooked a finger under the lace thong waistband peeking above her jeans, giving it a small, possessive tug. Jenny gasped, a shudder running through her. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, just terrifyingly overwhelming.
"See?" Brock smirked at Mark. "She likes it. Now scram before you kill the vibe." He turned back to Jenny, his eyes predatory. "You do like it, right? Tell us."
The command hung in the air. Jenny felt the words clawing at her throat, desperate to deny it. But the fog surged, thick and sweet. The need to please, to be approved of by these crude, laughing men, swamped her. "Y-yes," she breathed, the word tasting like ash. "I... like it."
Mark looked like he’d been punched. He stared at his sister, the defiance he’d known all her life utterly extinguished. Amy beamed, triumphant. Brock grinned, satisfied. "Knew it," he declared. He slid off the bench, standing tall. "This place is lame. Let's find somewhere... quieter. Talk properly." He held out his hand, palm up, expectant.
Jenny hesitated. A sliver of her old self screamed danger. But the fog was stronger. The craving for validation, for that addictive warmth their attention sparked, pulsed through her veins. Brock’s outstretched hand promised more of it. More approval. More feeling wanted. She placed her hand in his, her fingers trembling slightly. His grip closed around hers, firm and controlling.
Amy watched, her smile sharp. "Have fun, Jenny," she purred, a knowing glint in her eye.
Brock didn't lead her towards the exit. Instead, he steered her firmly through the crowded tables, past Mark, who stood frozen, towards the dimly lit hallway near the restrooms. His other hand, rough and heavy, settled possessively on the curve of her ass, fingers splaying over the denim, pressing her forward. Jenny flinched at the intimate contact, a small sound escaping her lips. The touch felt invasive, claiming. But the fog muffled the protest, amplifying only the traitorous hum of validation beneath the fear.
His thumb rubbed a small circle against her jeans. "Relax, babe," he murmured, his breath hot against her ear as they moved further from the noise. "Gonna have a real chat. Just you and me." The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting harsh shadows. They passed the women's restroom. Brock kept walking.
Jenny’s steps faltered slightly as he guided her past the door marked 'Women', a fresh spike of panic piercing the haze. "But...where...?" she stammered, her voice thin.
"Right here," Brock said, his tone leaving no room for argument. He pushed open the men's restroom door, the smell of stale urine and cheap disinfectant washing over them. The harsh light inside glared off the white tiles. It was empty. His hand on her ass tightened, propelling her forward over the threshold. "More private."
The heavy door swung shut behind them with a final-sounding thud. The latch clicked.
