Chapter 7: Stumbling Submission
The bass thumped through the floorboards, rattling Amy’s teeth. Stale beer and cheap perfume hung thick in the air. Bodies pressed hot against her, sticky skin sliding over the cheap vinyl of her corset. It dug deep, each breath a sharp little stab. She kept touching her hair, the unfamiliar cascade of silky dark waves Brittany had insisted on, a nervous habit she hadn’t had before. The red solo cup was sticky in her hand. Empty.
"Hey! Nerdy-Amy-no-more!" Brittany’s shriek cut through the din. She materialized, cheeks flushed, eyes gleaming with artificial brightness. "Lose the face. You look hot! See?" She gestured vaguely at the crowded room. "Everyone thinks so." A group of guys nearby leered, raising their cups in sloppy salute. Amy forced a smile. It stretched her lips tight. The spiked punch Brittany had shoved at her earlier was a warm, sweet buzz humming in her veins, blurring the edges, making the catcalls sound almost like compliments. It felt... good. The attention. The feeling of being looked at. Wanted. It was a warm bath after the cold isolation of her old lab coat existence. She swayed, the clear heels precarious on the sticky floor. The corset pinched again, a sharp reminder beneath the pleasant haze.
Across the packed living room, past the pulsating mass of dancers and drinkers leaning against the tacky neon signs, Chad leaned against a support beam. Watching. His predatory grin hadn’t faded since she’d choked down that punch. His eyes, sharp and calculating, tracked her every awkward step, every forced smile. He looked smug. Satisfied. Like he owned the place. Owned the moment. Owned... something else.
She scanned the room again, a flicker of panic cutting through the buzz. Mark. Where was Mark? He hated these things. Said they were shallow. Pointless. He preferred quiet corners, whispered conversations about astrophysics or the latest sci-fi novel. He loved her messy buns and oversized band tees. Loved her before. The thought was a tiny, sharp stone in the warm syrup of the drug. She missed the quiet intensity of his focus, the way his face lit up when she talked about quantum entanglement. A pang shot through her, sharper than the corset’s bite. She still loved him. Desperately.
Chad pushed off the beam. He moved through the crowd with arrogant ease, guys slapping his back, girls turning with hopeful smiles he ignored. He stopped directly in front of her, invading her space. The smell of cheap cologne and cigarette smoke clung to him.
"Having fun, Science Project?" His voice was a low rumble, barely audible over the pounding music, laced with that familiar mocking edge. He plucked the empty cup from her limp fingers and tossed it aside.
Amy swallowed, the buzz warring with a rising tide of unease. "It’s... loud," she managed. Her voice sounded thin. Brittle.
"Loud is life, sweetheart," Chad chuckled, his gaze sweeping over the straining fabric of the top Brittany had cinched her into. His eyes lingered. "Looks like the transformation’s almost complete. Brittany did good. You clean up almost decent." He leaned closer, his breath warm and sour against her ear. "Almost." The word hung, heavy with implication.
She flinched, the warm feeling evaporating. Douchebag. The old Amy’s word echoed faintly in the fogged recesses of her mind. He was still that. Arrogant. Cruel. Enjoying her discomfort, her transformation into someone else’s idea of desirable. She didn’t want this. Not with him. She wanted Mark’s quiet understanding, not Chad’s leering appraisal. She took a step back, her heel catching slightly on the sticky floor. "I should... find Brittany."
"Brittany’s busy," Chad said smoothly, not moving. His hand shot out, not grabbing, but resting possessively on her bare shoulder. His fingers were warm, heavy. Unwanted. The buzz in her veins seemed to pulse under his touch. "She’s out back. But you..." He lowered his voice further, a conspiratorial whisper that somehow cut through the noise. "You look like you could use a breather. Somewhere quieter. To talk."
Amy’s heart hammered against the corset’s rigid boning. Talk? With Chad? The idea was repulsive. "I... I don’t think so," she stammered, trying to pull her shoulder away. His grip subtly tightened, not painfully, but firm. Unyielding.
"Come on, Amy," he murmured, his thumb tracing a light circle on her skin. It sent an involuntary, confusing shiver down her spine – part disgust, part... something else the drug amplified. Approval? "Just for a minute. Away from this zoo. You look overwhelmed. I saw you scanning for Prince Charming." His smirk widened. "He’s not here. Probably buried in a textbook. Doesn’t appreciate this new, improved you." He leaned in again, his voice dropping to a silky, dangerous purr. "But I do. I appreciate the effort. The potential. Don’t you want someone to appreciate you? Really see you now?"
His words hit her like a physical blow. The need he tapped into was raw, visceral – the desperate craving for validation, for the male gaze she’d been conditioned to seek, amplified tenfold by the chemical haze Brittany had sprayed, the punch she’d gulped. He saw her now. He saw the effort Brittany had inflicted. He saw the surface she was becoming. Mark... Mark saw the ghost of who she was. The ghost was fading.
Her resistance wavered. The room swam a little, the music becoming a distant throb. The corset felt less like a prison and more like armor. Armor for this new, desired version of herself. Chad’s eyes held hers, dark and knowing. Confident. He knew he had her. He always won.
"Just talk?" she whispered, the words tasting like ash. Her eyes flickered towards the hallway leading to the bathrooms.
"Just talk," Chad confirmed, his predatory grin softening into something falsely reassuring. He released her shoulder only to offer his hand. Palm up. An invitation. A command. "This way. Won’t take long. Promise." The promise felt like ice.
A beat. The bass pounded. Bodies jostled. Amy looked down at his outstretched hand. Mark’s face flashed in her mind – kind, earnest, loving the girl with the telescope and the messy notebooks. That girl felt galaxies away. The girl standing here in the too-tight top and clear heels, dizzy with spiked punch and Chad’s suffocating attention, felt terrifyingly present. The need for approval, the drug-fueled warmth, the sheer exhaustion of resisting... it crested.
Slowly, hesitantly, her hand trembling slightly, Amy placed her palm on top of Chad’s. His fingers closed around hers, strong, warm, inescapable. He didn't smile. Just turned, pulling her gently but insistently through the pulsating mass of bodies, towards the dim, beer-stinking hallway where the bathrooms lay. She followed, her clear heels clicking unsteadily on the hardwood, the corset a cage she no longer tried to escape, trailing behind the boy she knew was a douchebag, because right now, he was the only one looking.
