Chapter 1: Blackout Between Best Friends

Lightning flashed, a stark, white snapshot of the cluttered living room. The TV screen, mid-explosion in some action movie, went black. The hum of the fridge died, plunging the apartment into a silence that was instantly filled by the roar of the storm outside.

“Well, shit,” Naruto’s voice cut through the dark.

Another brilliant crack of lightning illuminated the room, just for a second. Sakura was mid-step, headed back from the kitchen with a fresh bowl of popcorn. The sudden darkness and the thunderclap that shook the windows made her yelp. She stumbled, and a warm, solid weight crashed into Naruto where he sat on the couch.

“Oof!” He grunted, instinctively catching her. The popcorn bowl hit the carpet with a soft thump. She was a soft, sweet-smelling bundle of panic in his lap. Her hair tickled his nose, smelling like strawberries and rain. He could feel the full, generous curve of her hip under his palm, the surprising strength in her toned thighs pressed against his leg. His other hand had landed somewhere on the impossibly soft swell of her waist. He froze.

“S-Sorry!” Sakura squeaked, but she didn’t move. Her heart hammered against his chest.

Before he could form a coherent thought, a new weight pressed against his back. Two slender arms circled his neck from behind the couch, and the distinct, floral perfume of Ino filled his other side. She’d been sitting on the floor and had apparently used the blackout as an opportunity for a tactical advance.

“Scared me half to death,” Ino murmured, her voice a warm vibration against his ear. Her body molded to his back. He could feel the pointed pressure of her chin on his shoulder, the sleek brush of her long hair against his cheek, and, unmistakably, the soft, full press of her breasts against his shoulder blades. She clung like ivy.

Naruto sat trapped in a living, breathing paradox. Sakura’s lush, soft warmth in his lap, all soothing curves and rapid heartbeat. Ino’s sleek, confident presence at his back, a punctuated scent and deliberate pressure. He was hyper-aware of every point of contact. Sakura shifted slightly, and the friction of her movement against his thighs sent a jolt through him that had nothing to do with the lightning. A familiar, insistent tightness began to strain against the front of his sweatpants. He prayed to every god he knew that the darkness was absolute.

“Okay,” he managed, his voice rough. “Everybody’s okay. Just a power outage.” He tried for a laugh. It came out strangled. “You can, uh… you can get off me now, Sakura.”

She didn’t. Instead, she nestled closer, her head tucking under his chin. “It’s really dark,” she whispered, and the vibration of her words went straight through him.

Ino’s arms tightened. “My phone’s dead. Yours?”

“On the charger in my room,” Naruto said. “Which is also pitch black.”

Another booming crack of thunder. Sakura flinched, pushing her body more firmly into his. Ino’s grip became almost possessive. The storm raged, but inside the apartment, the tension was a different kind of electricity, humming in the space between their shared breaths.

“We’re not sleeping on this couch,” Ino declared after a moment. “Sakura’s got the guest room, but the air mattress is deflated. My room’s a fashion crime scene. Your bed’s huge, Naruto.”

He blinked in the dark. “My bed?”

“Yeah. We can all fit. Unless you’re scared.” Her tone was playful, a challenge.

“I’m not scared! It’s just…”

“Just what?” Sakura asked softly, still not moving from his lap.

Just that having both of you in my bed might actually kill me, he thought. But his mouth, ever treacherous, said, “Fine.Whatever. But no stealing the covers.”

Navigating the dark hallway was a clumsy ballet of shuffling feet and whispered warnings. Naruto led, with Sakura’s hand gripping the back of his shirt and Ino’s fingers linked with his. He pushed his bedroom door open. It was marginally less dark here, the tall window a sheet of rippling grey from the pouring rain.

His king-sized bed was a rumpled landscape of navy blue sheets. He stood awkwardly at the foot of it. “Uh…”

Ino solved the dilemma. She kicked off her slippers and climbed in, sliding over to the far side with practiced ease. “Come on, you two. It’s cold.”

Sakura let go of his shirt and moved to the near side. She pulled back the duvet and slipped in, the mattress dipping with her weight. Naruto stood there, feeling profoundly stupid. This was his bed. His best friends were in it. The situation was so astronomically normal and yet completely surreal.

He got in, lying rigidly on his back in the center, leaving what he hoped was a respectable canyon of mattress between him and each woman. The storm provided a constant soundtrack of rain and distant rumbles. The scent of Sakura’s strawberry shampoo and Ino’s jasmine perfume wove together in the cool, dark air.

“This is nice,” Sakura murmured after a few minutes. Her voice was sleep-soft.

“Mmm,” Ino agreed. “Better than the couch.”

The tension in Naruto’s shoulders began to ebb, replaced by a simple, warm contentment. They were here. They were safe. The thought loosened something in his chest. His arms, which had been crossed tightly over his stomach, relaxed. Almost without conscious thought, his right arm stretched out, his hand coming to rest lightly on Sakura’s hip over the duvet. He felt her intake of breath, a tiny, sharp hiccup in the dark.

His left arm did the same, extending behind him until his fingers brushed the silken spill of Ino’s hair on the pillow. She went very still.

Then, he pulled.

Gently, but firmly, he drew them both closer.

Sakura came willingly, rolling onto her side and tucking herself against him. Her head found the hollow of his shoulder, her arm curling over his chest. The heat of her was immense, soft and enveloping. The generous swell of her breasts pressed against his ribs, and he could feel the curve of her belly against his hip.

Ino shifted, too. She turned, molding her front to his back. Her knees fit into the backs of his, her arm snaking around his waist to rest her hand on his stomach, just below Sakura’s. Her breath was warm on the nape of his neck.

He was sandwiched between them, enveloped in a cocoon of softness and heat and overwhelming, intoxicating scent. Sakura’s lush, pillowy body hugged his front; Ino’s sleek, commanding form fitted perfectly to his back. He could feel the frantic beat of his own heart, and the dual rhythms of theirs, slowly synchronizing.

Sakura let out a shaky, contented sigh, her fingers lightly tracing the fabric of his t-shirt over his pectoral. Ino nuzzled her forehead against the back of his neck, a gesture so intimate it stole his breath.

“Naruto?” Sakura whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Nothing,” she said, but he heard the smile in her voice.

Ino’s hand flexed slightly on his stomach, her thumb making a tiny, circular motion. “Comfy?” she asked, her tone unreadable.

He was. He was also painfully, impossibly hard, the evidence trapped between his body and Sakura’s thigh. He was certain they could both feel it. The awareness should have been mortifying, but cloaked in the forgiving dark, surrounded by their warmth, it felt strangely like a secret they were all sharing.

“Yeah,” he breathed out, the word barely audible. “Really comfy.”

The storm’s fury began to subside, the thunder retreating to a gentle grumble. The rain softened to a soothing patter. In the calming quiet, their breathing evened out, becoming a slow, shared rhythm. Naruto’s mind, usually a whirlwind, grew still. The usual chorus of not good enough was silent, drowned out by the tangible reality of their bodies trusting him, seeking him in the dark.

He didn’t understand what it meant. He didn’t dare hope. But as he lay there, his arms holding the two most important women in his world close, a foreign and fragile peace settled over him. Their warmth seeped into his bones, and for the first time in a long time, the restless ache inside him quieted, soothed by the weight of them, the scent of them, the sheer, overwhelming rightness of their tangled limbs.

He drifted, not quite asleep, suspended in a perfect, painful, beautiful moment.

Outside, the last of the storm clouds began to break apart. A sliver of moonlight sliced through the window, painting a single, silver line across the floor. It crept slowly across the carpet, inching toward the bed, toward the three tangled forms who slept, oblivious to the light, and to the complicated dawn that would soon find them.
