Chapter 7: Sweat Equity

The air in the apartment was thick with the scent of pine sawdust and the metallic tang of drying paint. A few days had passed since the balcony, since the fall, but the memory hung in the air like another layer of dust, invisible but felt. Naruto attacked the disarray with a fervor born of restless energy, channeling all his confused tension into the manual labor of improvement.

He’d replaced the flickering light fixtures, installed new shelving in the hallway, and now, the grand finale: the new couch. The old one had been a casualty of too many movie nights and one legendary wrestling match during a championship game. This one was a deep, comfortable-looking navy, sturdy and wide.

“Alright, on three,” Naruto grunted, his voice strained as he gripped one end of the massive sofa. Sakura and Ino stood at the other end, their assistance more decorative than functional.

“You sure you don’t want to just, I don’t know, summon a clone to help?” Sakura asked, wiping her hands on her denim shorts. She wore a simple pink tank top that strained heroically across her chest, the fabric taut over the lush, full curves of her breasts. Her hair was up in a messy bun, tendrils of pink clinging to her damp neck.

“Where’s the fun in that?” Naruto shot back, a grin flashing despite the effort. He braced himself, his feet planted wide on the bare floor. The grey cotton of his t-shirt was dark with sweat across his shoulders and back, plastered to the hard planes of his torso. As he tensed, the muscles of his arms corded, his biceps swelling against the short sleeves, veins standing in relief under sun-kissed skin.

“One… two… three!”

He lifted, his back and legs taking the lion’s share of the weight. The girls gave a token heave, their attention fragmented. Sakura’s green eyes were fixed on the way Naruto’s shirt pulled tight across his broad shoulders, the fabric riding up to expose a strip of toned, glistening lower back. The waistband of his jeans sat low on his hips, and as he adjusted his grip, shifting his weight, the worn denim stretched tightly over the firm, rounded curve of his backside.

Ino, on the other side, watched the play of muscles in his forearms, the fierce concentration on his face. She remembered the feel of those arms, the solid heat of his chest beneath her on the damp balcony wood. A faint flush crept up her neck. She was dressed in loose linen pants and a thin white camisole, the delicate straps digging into the smooth slope of her shoulders. With every slight movement she made, the soft, heavy sway of her breasts beneath the fabric was a palpable rhythm.

The couch scraped across the floorboards, finding its new home against the far wall. Naruto straightened, wiping his brow with the back of his arm, his breath coming in deep pulls. “Perfect.”

He turned to survey the room, and both women quickly averted their gazes, pretending to examine the couch’s stitching. A charged silence settled, broken only by the distant city sounds.

“It looks great, Naruto,” Sakura said, her voice a little too bright. She bent over to plump a cushion, an action that caused her already-short shorts to ride up, revealing the generous, perfect swell of her backside. The soft, pale flesh of her thighs peeked out, and Naruto’s eyes, drifting across the room, caught the movement. He stared, mesmerized by the simple, breathtaking abundance of her. He quickly looked away, his throat dry.

“Yeah, thanks for doing all this heavy lifting,” Ino added, her tone carefully casual. She walked toward the kitchenette, her hips swaying in a lazy, confident rhythm that made the linen pants whisper against her skin. She reached for a glass of water, the stretch causing her camisole to ride up, exposing the incredible, narrow dip of her waist and the gentle flare of her hips. Naruto watched the line of her spine, the way her blonde hair cascaded down her back.

He needed to focus. He knelt down to adjust one of the couch’s legs that wasn’t sitting flat. As he bent over, the worn fabric of his jeans stretched to its limit across his thighs and the firm, sculpted muscles of his backside.

From across the room, Sakura’s breath caught in her throat. The view was… intense. The powerful lines of his body, the clear definition even through the denim, sent a jolt of pure, undiluted heat straight to her core. She felt a familiar, damp warmth begin to bloom between her legs. Her cheeks flushed. She dragged her eyes up, only to find Ino staring at her from the kitchenette.

Ino was leaning against the counter, her water forgotten. Her blue eyes were locked on Sakura’s face, not on Naruto. She had seen Sakura’s reaction—the parted lips, the darkening of her emerald eyes, the faint tremble in her hand as it rested on the couch. And Sakura saw that Ino saw. For a long, silent moment, their gazes held over Naruto’s oblivious, bent form.

There was no teasing smile on Ino’s face now. No playful mask. Her expression was stark, open, and filled with a startling, shared understanding. She saw the same hungry appreciation in Sakura’s eyes that she felt burning in her own. She saw the fluster, the guilt, the desperate want. And Sakura saw it all reflected back.

Naruto straightened up, the couch leg fixed. “That should do it,” he announced, turning around with a satisfied smile. The smile faltered as he saw the two women staring at each other, a silent, electric communication passing between them that he couldn’t decipher.

“You guys okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Sakura blinked, the spell breaking. She looked down, fussing with a nonexistent thread on her shorts. “Fine! Just… tired from all the… lifting.”

Ino pushed off from the counter, her composure snapping back into place like a shield. “Yeah, it’s hard work supervising,” she said, the old lilt returning to her voice, but it sounded thinner now, strained. “You’re basically done, right? We should celebrate. Order some pizza. You’ve earned it, hero.”

She walked toward her room, needing space, needing to breathe air that wasn’t thick with sawdust and the silent, screaming knowledge of their mutual desire. As she passed Naruto, she let her fingers trail lightly, almost absently, across his sweat-damp shoulder. It was a fleeting touch, but it burned.

“Pizza sounds great,” Naruto said, watching her go, confused by the strange tension that had descended. He looked to Sakura for explanation.

Sakura offered him a small, wobbly smile, her heart still pounding against her ribs. She had just shared a secret more intimate than any spoken word with Ino, and the weight of it was terrifying. The apartment, with its new lights and fresh paint and sturdy couch, felt suddenly like a gilded cage, beautiful and filled with everything he had built for them, and entirely too small for the three hearts beating within it.
