Chapter 2: The Office Temptation
The morning light had felt accusing. Waking tangled in sheets that smelled of jasmine and strawberries, with Sakura’s pink hair fanned across his chest and Ino’s leg hooked possessively over his thigh, had short-circuited Naruto’s brain. He’d lain there for twenty paralyzed minutes, listening to their soft, sleeping breaths, before carefully extracting himself.
Now, in his precinct office, the memory was a live wire under his skin.
He tried to focus on the burglary report in front of him, but the words blurred. All he could see was the silver moonlight on Sakura’s parted lips, feel the weight of Ino’s arm across his waist. His tie was too tight. He yanked at the knot, his chair creaking as he shifted, a familiar, restless ache settling in his groin just from the recollection. The storm had passed, but the atmospheric pressure in his own body had skyrocketed.
A ripple of unnatural quiet washed over the bullpen outside his glass-walled office. Naruto glanced up from the meaningless file.
Ino walked through the precinct like she was on a Parisian runway.
The usual chaotic symphony of ringing phones and shouted conversations dipped, then hushed. Her curve-hugging white sundress was a summer shock against the drab greys and blues of the department. It clung to the dramatic sweep of her hips, the narrow cinch of her waist, and the full, perfect swell of her breasts with a devotion that was borderline indecent. The thin fabric hinted at the shadow of her curves, the pale violet of her bra beneath, leaving nothing to the imagination of every detective, clerk, and perp in holding. Her golden hair, usually impeccably styled, cascaded in loose waves down her back, catching the midday sun streaming through the high windows. She moved with a hypnotic, hip-swaying confidence, her strappy sandals clicking a deliberate rhythm on the linoleum.
She was a vision. And she was heading straight for him.
Naruto’s mouth went dry. He saw Tsume from Forensics nudge her partner, a smirk playing on her lips. Two uniformed officers outright stared, one dropping a stack of files. A low, appreciative whistle came from somewhere near the water cooler, followed by a hissed, “Shut up, man!”
Ino ignored it all. Her blue eyes were locked on his through the glass. A knowing, playful smile touched her glossed lips.
She pushed his office door open without knocking. The scent of jasmine—real, not perfume, like she’d walked through a garden—wreathed into the room, instantly obliterating the stale coffee and photocopier toner.
“Hey there, detective,” she purred, leaning over his desk. She placed a paper bag from the local bakery down carefully, the movement causing the neckline of her dress to gape. Naruto’s eyes were involuntarily dragged downward, to the generous, shadowed cleavage presented inches from his face. “Forgot your lunch. Sakura said you bolted without it.”
Her voice was innocent. Her posture was not. She leaned further, her breasts pressing firmly against the scattered case files on his desk. The thin white cotton strained.
“Uh,” Naruto managed, forcing his gaze up to her face. It was a losing battle. “Thanks. You didn’t have to…”
“Oh, I wanted to,” she interrupted, her smile widening. She traced a manicured fingernail along the edge of his desk, then let it drift upwards, skimming the knot of his tie before coming to rest lightly on his jawline. Her touch was electric. “Long night. Thought you might need sustenance.”
The mention of the night hung between them, charged and opaque. Her eyes, so confident, held a flicker of something else—a vulnerability she’d never show to the gawking audience outside. He remembered her whispered sigh against his neck.
His body responded before his mind could catch up. A fierce, hot surge of blood rushed south, the fit of his trousers going from comfortable to critical in a heartbeat. He shifted again, the chair groaning in protest, desperately hoping the sturdy oak of the desk was shielding him from view. He felt exposed, hyper-aware of the thin barrier of fabric, of her knowing eyes.
“Ino…” His voice was a low rasp.
“Yes, Naruto?” she blinked, all feigned innocence. Her finger moved in a tiny, maddening circle on his skin.
The bullpen was watching. He could feel the collective gaze like a physical pressure. Whispers slithered through the silence. “Obvious…”“…just begging for attention…”“…how does he focus…?”
He should care. He usually did. But right now, all that existed was the jasmine scent drowning his senses, the warm weight of her breast against his paperwork, the phantom memory of her body curled into his back. His mind was a storm of want and confusion.
“The dress is new,” he said, the words coming out strangled.
Ino’s smile turned victorious, catlike. She pushed off the desk slightly, giving him a deliberate, full-bodied stretch that made the fabric sing. “You like it?” She did a slow, subtle turn, letting him see how the dress draped over the ripe curve of her backside, hugged the toned length of her thighs. It was a masterpiece of engineering, and she knew it.
“It’s… white,” he offered lamely, his knuckles white where he gripped the arm of his chair.
She laughed, a sound like wind chimes. Leaning in close again, her lips near his ear, she whispered, “You were snoring last night. Cute.” Then, just as swiftly, she straightened, her persona of playful flirt snapping back into place. “Anyway! Lunch. Eat it. Don’t work too hard.”
With a final, devastating wink, she turned. He watched, utterly captive, as she walked out of his office, every eye in the precinct tracking the sway of her hips, the confident click of her heels echoing in the renewed silence.
The door sighed shut.
Naruto collapsed back into his chair, a ragged breath escaping him. The front of his pants was undeniably tight, a blatant testament to her effect. He stared blankly at the bakery bag. The scent of jasmine still clung to the air, mixing with the ghost of strawberries from his memory of Sakura.
His intercom buzzed, making him jump. It was Tsume from Forensics, her voice laced with dry amusement. “Uzumaki? Your… witness just left. You want the tox report on the Henderson case now, or do you need a minute to, uh, recover?”
Naruto dropped his head into his hands, a groan escaping him. The report on his desk was creased where Ino had pressed against it. He could still feel the ghost of her finger on his jaw.
The chaos of the precinct filtered back in, but it felt distant, muffled. The only real things were the aching throb in his body and the two conflicting, all-consuming scents haunting him. He was a detective trained to solve puzzles, but this one—the puzzle of his own heart, of their intertwined bodies in the dark, of Ino’s brazen public claim and Sakura’s quiet trust—was a mystery he had no idea how to crack.
He remained there, motionless, until the phone on his desk rang with a different, more urgent tone. Work. Reality. He reached for it, his movement stiff, his mind still trapped in a sunlit office with a white dress and a knowing smile. The day had just begun, but he already felt utterly, completely undone.
