Chapter 6: Bending the Rules
The night had been a restless tapestry of tangled sheets and replaying moments. The feel of Sakura against him in the booth, the shocking, breathtaking vision of her in the kitchen, the sharp, knowing glance from Ino—they all cycled through Naruto’s mind until the grey light of dawn began to seep around the edges of his blinds. He gave up on sleep, pulling on a pair of loose sweatpants and a worn t-shirt, and padded silently into the living room.
The apartment was quiet, still holding its breath. Sakura’s door was firmly closed. Ino’s was ajar, her room empty. He saw her then, through the sliding glass door that led to the balcony.
She was a silhouette against the pale gold of the rising sun, already moving.
Naruto slid the door open, the sound lost in the gentle hum of the waking city. The air was cool and carried the damp, green scent of dew and distant blooms from the park. Ino stood on a thin purple yoga mat, her back to him, utterly absorbed.
She wore a pair of leggings the color of slate, and a cropped yoga top in a barely-there shade of cream. It was a simple garment, but on her, it was a revelation. As she raised her arms overhead in a graceful arc, beginning a sun salutation, the fabric rode up, exposing a smooth, tanned strip of skin above the waistband of her leggings. The muscles of her back, defined and lean, shifted beneath her skin like something celestial being charted.
He leaned against the doorframe, unnoticed, a captive audience.
Ino flowed from one pose to the next with a dancer’s precision. Downward dog elongated her body into a perfect, elegant line from her fingertips to the soles of her feet. As she stepped a foot forward into a lunge, the fabric of her top stretched tight across her chest. From his angle, he could see the delicate curve of her rib cage, the graceful hollow of her underarm, and the soft, full swell of the underside of her breast, exposed by the movement and the inadequate coverage of the top.
He should have looked away. He didn’t.
She moved into a split, her body lowering with controlled, breathtaking grace until she was seated on the mat, one leg extended forward, the other behind her. It was a picture of flexible strength. A faint sheen of sweat glistened on the exposed skin of her midriff, on the line of her collarbone.
“Are you just going to stand there and gawk, dobe?” Her voice was calm, even, without turning around.
He started, caught. “I… sorry. I didn’t want to interrupt.”
Ino looked over her shoulder, a slow, sly smile touching her lips. Her blonde hair was tied back in a high ponytail, but a few damp strands clung to her neck. “You’re not interrupting. You can be useful. Come spot me for a king pigeon. My balance is off this morning.”
Naruto approached, the damp wood of the deck cool under his bare feet. “I don’t know anything about yoga.”
“Just don’t let me fall on my face,” she said, her tone light but her eyes holding a challenge.
She shifted, bending her back leg and reaching a hand back to grasp her foot. The movement was incredibly deep, opening her hips and chest. She wobbled slightly. “See? A little help.”
He knelt beside her, unsure where to touch. “Where?”
“Here,” she guided his hand to her hipbone, his fingers brushing the taut, thin fabric of her leggings. “And here,” she said, taking his other wrist and placing his palm flat against the inside of her forward thigh, just above her knee, to steady her base. His touch was on firm, warm muscle.
She began to lift, to draw her foot higher, her body curving into an impossible, beautiful arc. The pose demanded everything of her. The cropped top strained, the neckline dipping dangerously low. From his position, kneeling so close, the view was intimate, overwhelming. The deep valley between her breasts was damp with perspiration. The soft, pale curves swelled against the fabric, threatening to spill over with every controlled, trembling breath she took.
His own breath hitched. He could smell her—jasmine soap, clean sweat, and something uniquely, essentially Ino.
Her balance faltered again, a more pronounced tremor running through her. His grip tightened instinctively on her hip and thigh, his fingers sinking into the firm, giving flesh. She gasped, a short, sharp intake of air, and for a second, her composed mask slipped. Her blue eyes, when they flicked to his, were wide, dark with something more than exertion.
Then it happened. Her foot slipped in her grasp, or perhaps his kneeling position on the dew-slicked wood shifted. There was a moment of suspended, tilting gravity.
They fell.
It wasn’t a crash, but a heavy, tangled collapse. Naruto landed on his back, the air whooshing from his lungs. Ino came down on top of him, a soft, warm weight, her limbs entangled with his.
For a frozen second, there was only stunned silence, the sound of their ragged breathing, and the frantic beat of his heart against his ribs. She was sprawled across him, her chest pressed flush against his, her face inches from his own. Her ponytail had come loose, a curtain of blonde hair falling around them, enclosing them in a private, perfumed world.
Her body was a revelation of heat and softness and strength. The thin, damp fabric of her top was nothing between them; he could feel the perfect, heavy weight of her breasts against his chest, the hard points of her nipples etched into his awareness. His hands, still on her hip and thigh from the pose, now held her in a full, accidental embrace.
Her eyes searched his, the playful confidence gone, replaced by a raw, startled vulnerability. Her lips were parted, her breath coming in quick, warm puffs against his mouth.
The fall had broken something open. All the teasing, all the hidden glances, the unspoken words from the kitchen—they were here now, in the space between their lips.
“Ino,” he breathed, his voice rough.
She didn’t move. She didn’t laugh it off. She just stared down at him, her body softening against his, as if melting into the contours of him. One of her hands had come to rest on his shoulder, her fingers curling into the fabric of his t-shirt.
“You…” she started, then stopped. Her gaze dropped to his mouth. “You always were a terrible spotter.”
It was an attempt at the old banter, but her voice was thready, weak. It held no conviction.
Naruto’s hands moved almost of their own accord. The one on her thigh slid upward, a slow, tentative journey over the firm curve of her leg to settle on the swell of her hip. The other left her hip, his fingers tracing a path up the incredible dip of her waist, over the delicate ladder of her ribs, coming to rest just below the straining edge of her yoga top. His thumb brushed the sweat-damped skin of her lower stomach, and she shuddered.
The world narrowed to the feel of her, the sight of her above him, haloed by the rising sun. He could see every fleck of gold in her blue irises, the faint tremor in her bottom lip. The distance between them was a sin, a mistake waiting to be corrected.
He started to lift his head, a fraction, an unspoken question.
A floorboard creaked inside the apartment.
Ino’s eyes snapped toward the sound, the spell shattering. In an instant, the vulnerability was gone, sealed away behind a familiar, glittering wall. She pushed herself off him with a fluid, sudden movement, leaving a shocking coldness where her warmth had been.
She was on her feet in a second, brushing off her leggings, not looking at him. “Slippery deck,” she said, her voice carefully neutral, back in control. “I should have known better.”
Naruto sat up, his body buzzing, aching with the sudden loss of her. He looked toward the sliding door. It was empty. Had Sakura been there? Had she seen?
Ino was already gathering her mat, rolling it up with brisk, efficient motions. “I need a shower,” she announced, her tone dismissing the last sixty seconds, the feel of her body, the shared air. She walked past him, a vision of composed, untouchable beauty, the early sun gilding the line of her neck, the perfect curve of her shoulder.
At the door, she paused, one hand on the frame. She didn’t look back. “You should…” she began, then stopped. “Never mind.”
And then she was gone, leaving him alone on the damp balcony with the ghost of her weight on his chest and the phantom pressure of her lips so close to his. The city below was fully awake now, humming with life, oblivious to the small, quiet quake that had just shifted the foundation of his world. The scent of her jasmine perfume lingered in the cool morning air, a taunting reminder of what had almost been, and what now felt further away than ever.
