Chapter 9: Protector's Wrath
The music was a physical thing. A deep, relentless bass shook the floor, crawling up through the soles of Naruto’s shoes and rattling his teeth. The air in the nightclub was thick, a stew of sweat, spilled liquor, and a dozen competing perfumes. Neon lights, a nauseating pink and electric blue, slashed through the smoky dark, illuminating fragmented glimpses of grinding bodies, glistening skin, upturned bottles.
They were in Tsunade’s VIP booth, a semi-circular island of black leather raised slightly above the chaos. It offered a view, not an escape. Their landlady and occasional mentor sipped amber whiskey from a heavy crystal glass, her golden eyes surveying the dance floor with an expression of detached amusement. "Good for the blood pressure," she’d said, winking at Naruto when he’d protested the venue.
Naruto didn’t feel like his blood pressure was good. He felt raw, frayed at the edges. The café terrace two days ago had rewired something inside him. Every accidental brush from Sakura now sent a jolt down his spine. Every sly glance from Ino felt like a coded message he was too dim to decrypt. He’d pulled at the collar of his dark button-down, now damp with sweat, wishing for the quiet of their apartment.
To his left, Ino was a sinuous silhouette against the throbbing light. She wore a short, black dress made of some liquid material that shifted with every breath. It plunged daringly in the back, revealing the elegant architecture of her spine before hugging the tantalizing swell of her rear, the fabric stretching just enough to highlight its perfect, heart-shaped curve. Her long blonde hair was piled in an artfully messy knot, exposing the delicate line of her neck. She laughed at something Tsunade said, the sound somehow cutting through the noise and curling, warm and intimate, around Naruto’s ear.
"Loosen up, detective," she murmured, leaning into his space. Her perfume, jasmine and night-blooming something, was a clean knife through the club’s murk. "You look like you’re on a stakeout."
Before he could answer, Sakura rose from the seat on his other side. "I need air that isn't ninety percent other people's breath," she announced, her voice carrying over the bass. She wore a deep emerald green top that clung to the breathtaking, abundant curves of her torso, the neckline offering a generous glimpse of the soft, shadowed valley between her breasts. It tucked into a pair of high-waisted, black leather pants that lovingly encased the full, powerful curves of her hips and rear. The material shone under the strobes, defining every majestic line.
"Don't get lost, Forehead," Ino teased, but her eyes were already scanning the crowd, a protective instinct flashing there.
Sakura shot her a look and weaved into the sea of bodies, her pink hair a beacon. Naruto’s gaze followed her, tracking the hypnotic sway of her hips until she disappeared into the pulsating dark near the bar.
Time stretched, thin and tense. Naruto sipped his club soda, the ice long gone. Tsunade told a story about a bar fight in some distant city, her hands painting violent arcs in the air. Ino laughed, but her attention was divided, her gaze constantly pulled back to the spot where Sakura had vanished.
It happened fast.
Naruto saw the shift in Ino’s posture first—the sudden rigidity, the way her fingers clenched around her cocktail glass. He followed her line of sight. Two men, broad-shouldered and flushed with drink, had flanked Sakura at the bar. One leaned in, his mouth too close to her ear. The other let his hand fall to the small of her back, his fingers pressing into the curve above her leather-clad rear.
Sakura’s body language screamed rejection. She straightened, pulling her shoulders back, a move that only emphasized the defiant, proud lift of her chest. She shook her head sharply, her mouth forming a clear "No." The man’s hand didn’t move. His friend grinned, leaning closer, crowding her.
Naruto was moving before the thought fully formed.
He didn’t remember vaulting the low divider of the booth. The crowd seemed to part for him, or perhaps he simply plowed through it, a single-minded force. The music, the lights, the smells—all of it tunneled into a silent, roaring focus. All he saw was Sakura’s tense face, the predatory gleam in the drunk men’s eyes, and the trespassing hand on her body.
He reached them just as Sakura’s arm drew back, her fist cocked. The one with his hand on her never saw him coming. Naruto’s own hand, hardened by years of physical training and raw fury, shot out and locked around the man’s wrist. He squeezed, not to break, but to communicate.
"Take your hand off her." Naruto’s voice was low, a gravelly snarl that cut under the thumping bass.
The man jerked, startled. "Who the hell—?"
His friend turned, his smile vanishing. "Back off, pretty boy. We’re just talking."
"You’re done talking," Naruto said. He released the wrist and shoved the man backward, a controlled push that sent him stumbling into a cluster of empty barstools.
Chaos erupted. The second man swung a wild, looping punch. Naruto ducked under it effortlessly, the air whistling where his head had been. His body moved with a lethal, practiced economy. He wasn’t brawling; he was dismantling. A sharp, precise jab to the solar plexus drove the air from the man’s lungs in a whoosh of sour breath. As the man doubled over, Naruto brought his knee up, not quite connecting, stopping it an inch from the man’s face. A warning.
The first man charged back, roaring. Naruto pivoted, using the man’s momentum against him. He caught the swinging arm, twisted it behind the man’s back, and drove him face-first into the polished surface of the bar with a sickening thud. The glassware rattled.
It was over in less than ten seconds. Two groaning men on the floor, one clutching his stomach, the other his nose, which wasn’t broken but would be spectacularly bruised. Security swarmed in, flashing lights and gruff voices, hauling the men away.
Silence didn't return, but the frantic energy around them did. Naruto stood, chest heaving, his breaths coming in controlled puffs. The front of his shirt had torn at the shoulder seam during the scuffle, revealing a glimpse of the hard, flexed muscle beneath. His knuckles were red, humming with the impact. He turned, the protective rage still burning in his blue eyes, searching for her.
Sakura was right there. But she wasn't looking at the fallen men. She was staring at him, her stunning green eyes wide, her lips slightly parted. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, pressing against the confines of her green top. There was shock there, but underneath it, something hotter, deeper—an awe that stripped away all her usual sarcasm.
And pressed against her side, an arm wrapped protectively around Sakura’s waist, was Ino. She must have followed him through the crowd. Her other hand was pressed flat against Sakura’s stomach, holding her close. Ino’s face was pale, her normally confident mask gone, replaced by a stark, fierce relief. Her gaze traveled from the torn fabric on Naruto’s shoulder, over the taut lines of his body, and finally to his face. In that look was a knowledge, a primal recognition that settled deep in his bones. It was the look from the café, but intensified, crystallized by violence.
Neither of them said a word. The club’s beat continued to pound, a senseless rhythm against the current of understanding now flowing between the three of them.
Naruto stepped forward, the fight leaving his body in a rush, replaced by a trembling urgency. He reached out, his hand—the one that had just struck a man—coming to rest gently on Sakura’s upper arm. Her skin was warm, faintly damp. "You okay?" His voice was rough.
She nodded, mute. Her own hand came up to cover his, her fingers tightening.
Ino’s arm dropped from Sakura’s waist, but her presence remained, a palpable force at his other side. "Let’s go home," she said, her voice strangely quiet, yet it pierced through the music. "Now."
They collected their things from Tsunade, who gave Naruto an appraising, approving nod, and spilled out into the cool night air. The sudden quiet was deafening. They walked the six blocks to their apartment in a heavy, charged silence. No teasing, no casual chatter. Just the echo of the bass in their ears and the memory of Naruto moving through the dark like an avenging force.
At their door, fumbling with the keys, Naruto felt the weight of their gaze on his back. Sakura’s voluptuous, trembling frame pressed briefly against him as she waited to enter. Ino’s hand brushed the small of his back, just for a second.
The apartment door swung open, swallowing them into the familiar, quiet dark of their shared space. The hallway light was off. Only the city’s glow filtered through the living room blinds, painting everything in monochrome.
Only the city’s glow filtered through the living room blinds, painting everything in monochrome. The silence felt new, fragile, like a thin sheet of glass laid over the familiar creaks of their apartment. Naruto flipped the deadbolt, the sound a sharp, final punctuation to the night. He could still feel the phantom impact against his knuckles, the crack against bone, and the terrifying, beautiful tremor that had run through Sakura’s frame as he’d reached for her.
He turned, leaning his back against the cool wood of the door. Sakura was already toeing off her heels by the couch, the movement causing the lush curves of her body to shift with a soft, mesmerizing gravity. Ino stood statuesque in the center of the room, her silhouette sharp against the dim window, the liquid fabric of her dress looking almost black now. They weren’t looking at each other. They were both looking at him.
"I'm gonna...shower," Naruto mumbled, pushing off from the door. The adrenaline was gone, leaving a hollow, shaky feeling in its place. He needed to scrub the club’s smell from his skin, the memory of those men’s leering faces from his mind.
"Wait." Sakura’s voice stopped him halfway to the hall. It wasn’t loud, but it filled the space.
She walked toward him, barefoot on the wooden floor. The city light caught the planes of her face, the concern in her wide green eyes. Her fingers, gentle and sure, touched the torn seam at his shoulder. "You’re not hurt?" she asked, her clinical doctor’s tone bleeding into something far more personal.
"I’m fine. They were drunk. They weren’t...professional." He tried for a grin, but it felt weak.
Ino moved then, a slow, graceful approach from the other side. "Professional or not, you moved." Her voice was a low, considering murmur. She reached out, not touching his skin, but tracing the taut line of his bicep through the torn fabric. "You were a blur. One second you were in the booth, the next you were just...there. Like you teleported."
Naruto’s skin prickled under her gaze and her near-touch. "I just saw—"
"We know what you saw," Sakura interrupted, her hand sliding down from his shoulder to his forearm. Her touch was warm, grounding. "That’s the point. You just saw, and then you were there. For me."
A heavy, warm silence descended. The unspoken things from the café terrace, the silent communication on the couch days before, it all coalesced here in the dark hallway. Ino’s fingers finally made contact, her palm flattening against the hard plane of his chest, over his pounding heart. Sakura’s grip on his arm tightened.
"The thing is," Ino said, her blue eyes capturing his in the gloom, "now I don’t think I can sleep."
Sakura nodded, a quick, almost imperceptible dip of her chin. Her pink hair brushed her shoulders."Me either. My heart’s still going a mile a minute. Every time I close my eyes, I see..." She trailed off, shaking her head. "It’s stupid. I’m safe. We’re safe. But the adrenaline..."
Naruto swallowed. "Do you...want some tea? Or I could sit out here until you guys drift off?"
Ino’s thumb stroked a slow arc over his sternum. "That’s not it, Naruto. We don’t want to be alone. The thought of my empty room right now..." She let the sentence hang, fragile and full of meaning. Sakura just watched him, her expression open, vulnerable in a way he rarely saw.
The implication hit him, a slow, deep warmth spreading from his core. "You want to... stay? With me?"
"If that's okay," Sakura whispered. "Just... just to not be alone. Your room is biggest."
A riot of conflict erupted in his chest. This was his best friends. This was a line. But the memory of Sakura cornered, of Ino's pale, relieved face, of their simultaneous, possessive claim at the café... it all blurred the line into irrelevance. He nodded, the motion jerky."Yeah.Okay. Of course it’s okay."
He led the way to his room, feeling hyper-aware of their soft footsteps behind him. He flicked on the small lamp on his dresser, casting a warm, low pool of light. The bed, a king, suddenly seemed both enormous and terribly small. The room smelled like him, like clean laundry and the faint, citrusy scent of his shampoo.
"Just...make yourselves comfortable," he said, gesturing awkwardly. He turned to rummage for a clean t-shirt, his back to them, giving them a semblance of privacy. He heard the whisper of fabric, the quiet sound of Ino’s dress being laid over his desk chair, the rustle of Sakura peeling off her leather pants.
When he turned back, shirt in hand, the breath left his lungs. Sakura stood by the far side of the bed in a simple, thin camisole of pale pink silk. The delicate straps dug softly into the lush, full curves of her shoulders, and the flimsy material draped over the breathtaking, heavy swell of her breasts, the outline of her nipples just faintly visible. It ended at the gentle slope of her stomach, flowing over the soft, powerful curve of her hips before stopping high on her toned thighs. She was looking at the bed, a faint blush on her cheeks.
Ino had chosen the side closest to the door. She wore matching shorts and a tank top in cream. The outfit was deceptively simple, showcasing the elegant, willowy length of her legs, the toned flatness of her stomach, and the graceful, enticing flare of her hips. The tank top clung to the perfect, rounded shape of her breasts, the neckline hinting at the soft shadow between them.
They were both gloriously, devastatingly real, and they were in his bedroom.
"Uh," he intelligently stated, clutching the shirt.
"Get in, dobe," Sakura said softly, the old nickname laced with new tenderness. She lifted the covers and slipped in, the mattress dipping with her weight. Ino did the same on the other side, a silent, coordinated maneuver.
Naruto stood frozen for another second before turning off the lamp, plunging the room into near-darkness save for the streetlight slats through his blinds. He pulled his torn shirt over his head and yanked the clean one on, his back to them, then cautiously approached the bed. He lifted the covers and slid into the center, the space between them feeling like a mile-wide chasm of charged air.
The chasm lasted for all of ten seconds.
Sakura shifted first. With a soft, weary sigh, she rolled onto her side facing him. Her entire, wonderfully soft, warm body pressed against his left side. The unbelievable, pillowy softness of her breasts molded against his arm and ribs, a weight that was both grounding and electrifying. One of her thick, smooth thighs came to rest over his leg.
"Thank you," she breathed into his shoulder, her voice thick with emotion. "For tonight. For being you."
Almost simultaneously, Ino moved on his right. She turned, draping a slender arm across his stomach, her hand coming to rest just below his ribs. She nestled her head into the hollow of his shoulder, her sleek blonde hair tickling his chin. The clean scent of her filled his space. "You were incredible," she murmured, her lips moving against the fabric of his shirt."So fast. So completely in control. It was... honestly kind of breathtaking to watch."
Naruto blushed so intensely he felt the heat flood his entire face and neck. He was sure he was glowing in the dark. They were cuddling him. They were praising him. Their bodies, so different but equally intoxicating, were wrapped around him, their warmth seeping into him. He lay rigid, staring at the ceiling, afraid to move a muscle lest he break the spell.
"You shouldn't... you shouldn't have to deal with that crap," he managed to say, his voice strained. "It pisses me off."
"We know," Sakura whispered, her fingers tracing idle, soothing circles on his chest. "That's what makes it different. It wasn't performative. It was just... pure. You."
Ino's hand slid up his chest, coming to rest over his heart. "You protect what's yours," she said, the words deliberate, testing the waters. She didn't specify what, or who, was his. She left it beautifully, terrifyingly open.
Then, in a move that short-circuited his brain completely, Sakura tilted her head up and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his cheek. Her lips were full and warm. The gesture was tender, filled with a gratitude that ran deeper than words.
A second later, Ino did the same from his other side. Her kiss was a whisper of contact, firmer, leaving a faint trace of her lip gloss. "Sleep well, hero," she whispered against his skin.
They both settled then, their bodies relaxing into him, their breathing beginning to slow and deepen. Sakura’s thigh became a heavier, comforting weight. Ino’s arm tightened just a fraction around his midsection.
Naruto lay paralyzed in the dark, cocooned in their scent, their warmth, their impossible affection. The old, ingrained belief—that he wasn't good enough, that they saw him only as the loud, oblivious friend—began to crack under the physical, undeniable evidence surrounding him. It didn't shatter, not yet. But a fine web of fractures spread through its foundation, fragile and new.
His heart hammered against Ino's palm. The women, feigning sleep, exchanged a single, knowing glance over the solid plane of his chest. Their new plan, unspoken but mutually understood, was set into motion. They would dismantle his disbelief one gentle touch, one honest compliment, one shared bed at a time.
He didn’t know what was happening. But for the first time, floating in the sensory overload of their embrace, he dared to hope it might be real.
