Chapter 4: Stormy Embrace

The shared warmth of the living room couch lingered in Naruto’s muscles like a pleasant ache as he retreated to his bedroom. The storm, a distant rumor all evening, had finally arrived. Rain began to spatter the window in fat, erratic drops, graduating quickly to a persistent drumming. He changed into simple sleep pants and a thin t-shirt, the fabric stretching across the dense topography of his shoulders and chest, a compact landscape earned from chasing leads and scaling fire escapes.

He was just sliding under his comforter when the first real crack of thunder shattered the night. The windows rattled in their frames. Simultaneously, his door flew open.

Sakura stood silhouetted in the doorway, backlit by the hall light. She was wearing only an oversized medical school t-shirt that did nothing to diminish the staggering silhouette of her. It ended high on her thighs, and with every flash of lightning, the powerful curves of her legs, the swell of her hips, the profound valley of her waist, were etched in stark blue-white relief. Her emerald eyes were wide, not with her usual ferocity, but with a raw, unguarded fear.

Another thunderclap, closer, concussive. She flinched, a full-body shudder that ran through her magnificent frame.

“It’s just thunder, Sakura,” he said, his voice gentle.

“I know what it is,” she snapped, but the effect was ruined by the way she wrapped her arms around herself, making her bust appear even more immense, a soft, defensive shield. “It’s illogical. I know the atmospheric pressure changes, the electrical discharge…” Another boom. She took an involuntary step into the room. “It’s loud.”

“You can stay in here if you want,” he offered, shifting to one side of his full-sized bed. The invitation was pure, instinctive friendship. He’d done this before, during bad storms when they were teenagers.

She didn’t hesitate. She crossed the room in two strides, the floorboards creaking under her weight, and peeled back his comforter. The bed dipped profoundly as she slid in beside him. She immediately turned on her side, facing him, and before he could adjust, her arm swept over him. She pulled him, not to her, but into her.

His back was to her front, a mirror of their couch position, but here there were no barriers, no audience. Just the thin cotton of their sleep clothes. Her tremors were not subtle. They were seismic, communicating through the points of contact: the full, heavy press of her breasts against his shoulder blades, the solid curve of her belly against the small of his back, the powerful brace of her thighs against his legs.

“You’re shaking,” he murmured.

“Shut up and don’t analyze it, Detective,” she muttered into his hair, her breath hot. Her arm locked around his torso, her hand splayed possessively over the hard plane of his stomach again, fingers digging in slightly as another roll of thunder approached.

The storm descended in earnest. Lightning flashed, painting the room in snapshots of frantic stillness: her pale hand stark against his abdomen, the tangled pink hair on his pillow. Thunder followed instantly, a window-rattling CRACK that seemed to suck the air from the room.

Sakura cried out, a short, sharp sound, and crushed him against her. The movement was a full-body spasm of fear. Her hips jolted forward, pressing the lush, soft weight of her pelvis firmly into the base of his spine. In the same motion, she buried her face between his shoulder blades, and her other arm came up, her hand curving over his head, guiding it back into the soft, overwhelming warmth of her chest.

He was engulfed. His head was pillowed in incredible softness, the heat of her skin seeping through his shirt and hers. The scent of her—antiseptic soap, vanilla shampoo, and something uniquely, deeply Sakura—filled his senses. Her fear was a tangible, vibrating aura around them.

“Sorry,” she gasped, her voice muffled against his back. “I’m sorry. I can’t—it’s stupid.”

“It’s not,” he said, his own voice strained. He was intensely aware of every contour of her body welded to his. The way her lower stomach cushioned against him. The firm pressure of her thighs. His hands, trapped slightly in front of him, felt useless. Slowly, he lifted one, reaching back, aiming to pat her arm in a gesture of comfort.

His fingers, questing in the dark, found not her arm, but the incredible, round curve of her rear, straining against the thin cotton of her shirt. It was a staggering, lush fullness, warm and solid and giving under his tentative touch. He froze.

She froze. Her breathing, which had been ragged, hitched. The trembling didn’t stop, but it changed frequency, becoming a finer, more concentrated vibration.

Another lightning flash. This one illuminated the room for a full second. He saw his own hand, pale against the dark berry hue of her shirt, resting on the spectacular swell of her hip. He started to pull away, muttering an apology.

Her hand, the one splayed on his stomach, slid down. Her fingers hooked into the waistband of his sleep pants, anchoring him. “Don’t,” she whispered. The word was a plea, a command, a confession. “Just… leave it there. It’s… grounding.”

He obeyed, his mind white noise. His palm settled more fully on the curve, feeling the powerful muscle beneath the sublime softness. He gave a gentle, reassuring squeeze, a friend’s gesture turned impossibly intimate by the geography of her body.

A low, shuddering sigh escaped her, warm against his spine. Her hand on his stomach loosened, the fingers unfurling. They began to move, not in fear, but in exploration. Her touch traced the defined lines of his abdominal muscles, learning the hard ridges and the tense, quivering valleys between them. Her thumb slipped under the hem of his shirt, skating over the hypersensitive skin just below his navel.

He wasn’t trembling from the storm. He was trembling from her. A heat, low and dangerous, was coiling tight in his belly, a heat completely separate from the warm shelter of her body. He felt himself responding, a tautening against the front of his sleep pants, an involuntary betrayal of the chaos she was unleashing in him.

She felt it. Her breathing stopped again. Her exploratory hand stilled. For a long moment, there was only the roar of the rain and the frantic drum of his own heart, felt through every point where she touched him.

Then, with a deliberateness that stole the air from his lungs, she shifted her hips. It was a subtle, rolling adjustment. The soft, heavy weight of her lower body settled more firmly against him. She wasn’t just holding him. She was fitting herself to him, the generous curve of her backside now cradling the evidence of his arousal through the layers of fabric.

A broken sound, half-gasp, half-whimper, escaped her. Not from fear. Her hand on his abdomen clenched, pulling him even tighter into the shelter of her body. Her face pressed harder into his back. “Naruto…” His name was a prayer, a question, a raw scrap of sound lost in the next peal of thunder.

This time, she didn’t flinch. She moved. A slow, tentative, unmistakable grind of her hips against his backside, a seeking pressure that ignited every nerve ending he possessed. His fingers dug into the soft flesh of her hip, not to push away, but to hold on, an anchor in a suddenly upended world.

The storm outside was chaos. The storm inside was crystalline, focused, a roaring silence between them filled only with heat and heartbeat and the shocking, perfect friction of her body against his. The detective, who solved every case through dogged persistence, was finally confronted with evidence he could no longer ignore: the shuddering breath against his spine, the claiming hold of her hand, the language of her hips speaking a truth her words never could.

He turned his head, as much as he could within the soft prison of her chest. His cheek rubbed against the heated, silken skin revealed by her shirt. “Sakura…” he began, his voice rough, unfamiliar to his own ears.

She went perfectly still, awaiting his verdict, her entire magnificent body holding its breath. The next lightning flash came. But the thunder, this time, never arrived.
