Chapter 5: Bikini Sabotage

The scent of salt and coconut sunscreen hung heavy in the golden evening air. The beach was a canvas of dying light, the sun melting into the horizon like a pat of butter, setting the sky ablaze in hues of peach and lavender. Naruto dug his toes into the cool, damp sand at the water’s edge, the remains of a wave foaming around his ankles. He felt conspicuously small, a compact figure amidst the stretching shoreline and the leggy silhouettes of evening strollers.

Ino was a vision strolling ahead of him, her long ponytail of sun-bleached blonde hair swaying like a metronome with each hip-rolling step. Her bikini was a daring confection of cerulean strings and scant triangles that did nothing but highlight what it supposedly covered. The sunset gilded the phenomenal sweep of her back, the deep, sensual curve of her waist that flared out to impossibly generous hips, and the long, powerful lines of her legs. Every man, and several women, they passed underwent a subtle, physical recalibration—a straightening of spines, a slowing of pace, a flicker of eyes trying and failing not to trace the breathtaking architecture of her.

Naruto saw the looks. He was a detective; noticing things was his job. He saw the hunger, the appreciation, the sheer awe. It was a familiar backdrop to his life with her, a constant reminder of the chasm he perceived between them.

“Hey, short stuff, you planning on swimming or just doing a trench impression?” Ino called over her shoulder, her baby blue eyes crinkling with mirth.

Before he could retort, a pair of women volleyball players, both well over six feet tall and gleaming with sweat and confidence, jogged past. One, a brunette with a predatory smile, slowed, eyeing Naruto’s compact, well-defined build.

“Hey there. Lose your lifeguard tower?” she teased, her voice a low purr.

Naruto blinked. “Uh, no? I’m not a lifeguard.”

The woman laughed, sharing a look with her friend. “Cute. And built. You here alone?”

He was stammering a reply when a shadow fell over him. Ino had somehow closed the distance without a sound. Her hand, cool from the ocean spray, slid possessively around his bicep, her fingers meeting easily on the other side. She didn’t just touch him; she laid claim, pulling him lightly into the sublime, scented warmth of her body.

“There you are, baby,” she said, her voice a honeyed drip that was both sweet and dangerous. She leaned down, her impressive chest momentarily eclipsing the sky, and pressed a firm, lingering kiss to his cheek. Her lips were soft and warm. “I told you not to wander off. The seagulls might carry you away.”

She straightened, turning a dismissive, dazzling smile on the volleyball players. It didn’t reach her eyes. “He’s with me.”

The women’s smiles faltered. They muttered apologies and jogged away, casting glances back at the incongruous pair: the goddess and the short, stunned mortal she was anchored to.

“You didn’t have to do that,” Naruto mumbled, his cheek burning where her lips had been.

“Do what?” Ino chirped, her grip tightening as she led him further down the beach, away from the crowds. “You’re my favorite person. I don’t like sharing.” She said it lightly, but the current underneath was direct and strong.

They walked in silence for a stretch, the only sounds the shushing waves and the distant cry of gulls. The recent memory of another night, of a different kind of storm and a different overwhelming presence, flickered in Naruto’s mind—Sakura’s trembling, the heat, the shocking intimacy. It left him sensitive, raw, like a nerve exposed to salt air. He was hyper-aware of the weight of Ino’s hand, the press of her hip against his arm, the way her laughter seemed to vibrate through him.

“The water’s perfect,” Ino announced as they reached a more secluded curve of sand. “Last one in is a rotten egg!” She took off, a sprint that was both powerful and graceful, her form a sublime kinetic sculpture against the colored sky.

Naruto grinned, competitive fire igniting. He gave chase, his shorter legs pumping hard. He hit the water just after her, the cool Pacific embrace a shock that became instant relief. He dove under a wave, surfaced, and shook his head, spiking his blonde hair.

Ino was a few yards out, treading water. The water sluiced over her shoulders, beaded on her collarbones. “Took you long enough!” she laughed.

A larger wave, a teasing roll from the deep, chose that moment to arrive. It wasn’t dangerous, just playful. Ino turned to face it, as if to ride it in. As the foam crest hit her, she gave a theatrical, perfect-pitched yelp. The wave passed.

She stood up in the waist-deep water, her back to him. Her hands flew to her shoulders. “Oh no!”

Naruto waded closer. “What? What’s wrong?”

She turned. Her face was a masterpiece of faux panic, her blue eyes wide. The top of her bikini was gone, the strings untied and lost to the sea. Her breasts were bare, breathtakingly full and high, water dripping from peaks that tightened in the evening air. The setting sun seemed to solidify them in liquid gold.

“It came undone! I can’t— Naruto, don’t look!” she cried, but instead of turning away, she surged forward, closing the gap between them in one swift motion.

Her hands framed his face, not to cover his eyes, but to guide. She pulled him firmly, decisively, into the pillowy, overwhelming warmth of her chest, muffling his startled yelp against her skin. He was submerged in her, the scent of salt and her sweet skin filling his nostrils, the incredible soft, heavy warmth consuming his senses. His hands flailed for a moment before settling weakly on the dive of her waist.

“Don’t let anyone see!” she whispered, her voice a vibration against his ear. But he could hear the smile in it, the utterly triumphant glee. Over his muffled head, he saw a group of guys further down the beach who had been watching her, now slumping in collective disappointment, turning away.

She held him there for a long, delicious moment, one hand cradling the back of his head, her fingers tangled in his wet hair. His body, still humming with the unresolved energy from Sakura’s bed, reacted violently, instinctively. Heat flooded him, a tight, aching throb that had nothing to do with the cool water. He tried to pull back, to stammer an apology, his words lost against her skin.

“Shhh,” she murmured, finally releasing him just enough to look down. Her eyes were luminous, fierce with affection and victory. “It’s okay. My hero, protecting my modesty.” She wasn’t blushing. She was radiant.

She kept one arm around his shoulders as she led him back to shore, his body carefully positioned to shield her from view. On the sand, she calmly retrieved a sarong from her bag and tied it around her chest with a practiced flip, already wearing a dry, innocent top underneath. The whole performance had been seamless.

The walk back to the car was quiet. The sun was gone, leaving a twilight bruised purple and blue. Naruto couldn’t form a coherent thought. His cheek still burned from her kiss. His face still felt the imprint of her breasts, a phantom warmth more intimate than any kiss he’d ever known. His body was taut with a confused, persistent ache.

He fumbled with the car keys, dropping them in the sand. As he bent to pick them up, Ino’s hand brushed the back of his neck, gentle.

“You’re such a mess,” she said softly, her earlier bravado gone, replaced by a tone of deep, tender fondness. “A cute mess.”

He straightened, keys in hand, and finally looked up at her. Really looked. In the dim light of the rising moon, her expression was unguarded, the love in it so vast and obvious that even he, the famously dense detective, could not misinterpret it. It stole his breath.

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His physical response to her, to the memory of Sakura, to the overwhelming reality of his feelings, was a tide he couldn’t control. A sharp, insistent flush crept up his neck. He looked away quickly, sliding into the driver’s seat, the fabric of his swim trunks suddenly uncomfortably tight.

Ino saw it. The glance down, the frantic avoidance, the hardened line of his jaw. She didn’t giggle or gloat. A slow, radiant, utterly fulfilled smile spread across her face as she settled into the passenger seat. She reached over, her hand covering his on the gear shift, her long fingers enfolding his completely.

“Best day ever,” she sighed, content, staring ahead at the moon-washed road, leaving him to navigate the quiet, tumultuous storm now raging entirely within him.
