Chapter 12: The Silent Witness
The sheets were cool where they weren’t damp. Selina lay sprawled, one arm flung over her eyes, the other tracing idle patterns on Kate’s bare stomach. The taste of herself was still on Kate’s mouth, a salty, intimate ghost between them. Paris glowed beyond the window, a silent, golden witness.
“No more games,” Selina had said. The words hung in the perfumed air, too big, too fragile.
Kate’s hand found hers, lacing their fingers together. Her knuckles were scraped, a fresh scab over an older one. “Just us,” she echoed, voice rough. It wasn’t a question. It was a reinforcement, a vow spoken back into the darkness.
But Selina felt it, the cold knot in her belly that the most blinding orgasm couldn’t melt. Bruce’s words on the Gotham roof were a poison in her wine. You’ll be the instrument of her ruin. It’s what you do.
She turned her head, nuzzling into the junction of Kate’s neck and shoulder, inhaling the scent of sweat and lavender and Kate. “He was wrong, you know,” she murmured against her skin.
Kate’s body went very still. “He usually is, about the things that matter.”
“I’m not a complication.”
“You’re my wife.” Kate said it with a finality that brooked no argument, a tactical assessment. She shifted, rolling onto her side to face Selina. The golden light caught the scars on her shoulder, the pale line on her jaw. Her blue eyes were dark pools. “His world runs on fear and contingency. Ours doesn’t have to.”
Selina’s smile felt sharp. “Our world is built on stolen moments in expensive hotel rooms.”
“It’s built on this.” Kate leaned in and kissed her, hard, a claiming that was both gentle and desperate. When she pulled back, her breath was warm. “And I’m not letting a man who dresses like a rodent define it for us.”
A laugh escaped Selina, genuine and surprised. It loosened the knot, just a little. She pushed Kate onto her back, swinging a leg over her hips to straddle her. The damp sheet fell away. She looked down at the woman beneath her—the powerful frame, the resolute jaw now softened in the shadows, the red hair fanned out like a battle standard on the pillow.
“Prove it,” Selina whispered, her voice dropping to a low,挑衅 purr.
“What?”
“He thinks you’ll get distracted. That I’ll make you weak.” She leaned down, her lips brushing Kate’s ear. “So fuck me like you’re not afraid of anything. Like there’s no city to save tomorrow. Like I’m the only mission you’ve ever had.”
A growl, low and animal, vibrated through Kate’s chest. Her hands came up to grip Selina’s hips, fingers digging into the flesh hard enough to bruise. “Is that what you want? A mission?”
“I want you to forget your own name,” Selina breathed, rocking her hips, feeling Kate’s heat against her. “I want you to wreck me.”
It was like flipping a switch. The solemn soldier vanished, replaced by something raw and hungry. Kate moved with a sudden, violent grace, flipping them over in a tangle of limbs so fast Selina’s head spun. The back of her head sank into the pillow, Kate’s weight solid and anchoring atop her.
“No,” Kate corrected, her voice a guttural command. She pinned Selina’s wrists above her head with one strong hand. “I’m not going to wreck you. I’m going to own you. Every fucking inch.”
She didn’t kiss her. She devoured her. It was all teeth and dominance, a conquest of the mouth. Selina moaned into it, her back arching, offering herself up. Kate’s free hand slid down her side, over her ribs, cupping her breast roughly, thumb scraping over the nipple until it was a pebbled, aching point. Then lower, over the flat plane of her stomach, through the slick, dark thatch of hair.
Selina’s legs fell open in invitation, a silent plea.
Kate broke the kiss, her breath coming in ragged pulls. She looked down between their bodies, watching her own hand. “Look at you,” she muttered. “Soaked for me. Already.”
“Kate, please—”
“Please what?” Her fingers brushed through Selina’s folds, a maddening, teasing stroke. “Use your words, thief. Tell me what you need.”
“I need your fucking fingers inside me. Now.” Selina strained against the grip on her wrists.
“Since you asked so nicely.” Kate’s mouth curled in a feral smile.
She didn’t tease. She pushed two fingers into Selina without warning, a deep, punishing thrust that stole the air from Selina’s lungs. Selina cried out, a sharp, broken sound. Kate set a relentless rhythm immediately, her fingers pistoning in and out, the heel of her hand grinding against Selina’s clit with each drive. It was harsh, utilitarian, overwhelmingly effective.
“That’s it,” Kate snarled, watching Selina’s face contort. “Take it. This is what you asked for.”
Selina was babbling, a stream of filth and praise and pleas. “Yes—fuck—right there, god, don’t stop—you feel so fucking good—” The coil in her gut tightened with terrifying speed, her hips meeting every thrust. The room blurred, shrinking to the points of contact: the bruising grip on her wrists, the relentless stretch and friction inside her, the scorching heat of Kate’s body pressed along her length.
Kate leaned down, her mouth hot on Selina’s throat. “You’re mine,” she growled against her skin, her thrusts becoming harder, deeper. “My complication. My wife. My problem. And I don’t share my problems.”
The words, possessive and jagged, tore through the last of Selina’s control. Her orgasm ripped through her, a seismic wave of blinding white pleasure that clenched violently around Kate’s fingers. She screamed, a raw, unraveling sound that was swallowed by the Parisian night.
Kate rode her through it, her movements slowing but not stopping, drawing the sensations out until Selina was shaking, oversensitive and whimpering.
Only then did she release Selina’s wrists, withdrawing her fingers. She brought them to her own mouth, her eyes locked on Selina’s dazed ones as she slowly, deliberately, sucked them clean. “Mine,” she said again, softly now.
Selina could only nod, boneless and ravaged. Kate collapsed beside her, pulling her close, tucking Selina’s head under her chin. Their hearts hammered against each other, a frantic, syncing rhythm.
The silence returned, thicker now, saturated. Selina listened to the steady beat of Kate’s heart, felt the protective circle of her arms. For a moment, Bruce’s voice was silent.
Then Kate spoke, her voice quiet but clear in the dark. “He’s going to test us. He’ll send something. Or someone.”
Selina closed her eyes. “I know.”
“We’ll be ready.”
It wasn’t a question. It was another vow. Selina clung to it, to the strength in the arms around her, as the first grey light of a Parisian dawn began to bleed the gold from the room. The game was over. The war, it seemed, was just beginning.
