Chapter 9: The Unspoken Bond
The rift split the air like a wound—a jagged, screaming tear in the fabric of Limbo itself. Crimson light bled from it, thick and viscous, dripping onto the obsidian floor where it sizzled and hissed like fat in a pan. Illyana stood before it, Soulsword angled low, her platinum hair stirred by winds that shouldn't exist in this place. The blade hummed, hungry, resonating with the wrongness that pulsed from the breach.
Selyem was already moving to her left flank, falling into a combat stance that spoke of training older than her years in that bunker. Her fingers twitched, ready to fire webbing or fists, whatever the moment demanded. "What the hell is that thing?"
"I don't know." The admission tasted like ash on Illyana's tongue. She was the Darkchild, mistress of this realm, and she didn't fucking know. "But it's not welcome."
The crimson light coalesced, forming a silhouette that was almost human but not quite—too tall, too thin, its edges blurring like a half-finished thought. It took a step forward, and the floor beneath it cracked, veins of red spreading outward like a disease. When it spoke, its voice was a chorus of discordant whispers, layered and wrong.
"Little queen. You've been hiding something precious."
Illyana's grip tightened on her blade. "I've been hiding nothing. I am the ruler here. You are the intruder."
"You hide her." The thing's head tilted, featureless face somehow conveying a leer. "The little spider. You think your shadows can conceal what your heart desires?"
Selyem's jaw clenched. "I'm standing right here, asshole. If you've got something to say, say it to my face."
The creature laughed—a sound like breaking glass. "So defiant. So... delicious." It took another step, and Illyana moved. The Soulsword carved an arc of pure silver light through the air, and the creature shrieked as the blade bisected it. But instead of falling, it split into two, then four, then a dozen smaller shapes that swarmed across the walls like roaches fleeing light.
"Fuck," Selyem breathed, launching a web that caught three of them mid-scuttle. They dissolved on contact, hissing. "They're spreading."
Illyana's eyes blazed with hellfire. She raised her free hand, and the shadows of Limbo answered her call, rising like tidal waves to crash over the smaller creatures. They screamed as the darkness consumed them, and for a moment, the chamber was chaos—silver blade flashing, shadows devouring, webs snapping through the air.
When it was over, silence fell like a shroud.
Illyana stood panting, Soulsword still raised, scanning every corner for any trace of the intruder. The only sound was the ragged breath of her own lungs and Selyem's steadying exhale beside her. The rift had sealed itself, leaving nothing behind but scorched obsidian and the lingering stench of burnt ozone.
"Is it gone?" Selyem asked, voice tight.
Illyana lowered her blade slowly, but didn't dismiss it. "I don't know. That wasn't..." She paused, searching for words. "That wasn't a demon. It wasn't a spirit. It wasn't anything I've ever seen in Limbo."
"Then what was it?"
The question hung between them, unanswered. Illyana finally dismissed her Soulsword, the blade vanishing in a shimmer of light, and turned to face Selyem fully. The Darkchild's expression was unreadable, but something flickered in the depths of her eyes—something that might have been fear, if Illyana Rasputin were capable of such a thing.
"I need to think," she said quietly. "And I don't want to think in here."
She extended her hand, not commanding, but offering. Selyem looked at it for a long moment, then took it. The warmth of her palm against Illyana's cool skin was a grounding presence, an anchor in the shifting chaos of the throne room.
They walked through corridors that twisted and turned in ways that defied physics, doors appearing and disappearing as Illyana willed them. The architecture of Limbo was never static—it shifted with its mistress's moods, and tonight it seemed to curl inward, protective, wrapping them in layers of shadow and silence until the throne room felt like a distant memory.
The private chamber was smaller than the throne room, more intimate. A massive bed dominated the space, its dark silks cascading in waterfalls of midnight blue and deep purple. Candles flickered in sconces along the walls, their flames burning with an eerie blue light that cast dancing shadows across the ceiling. A single window looked out onto the void of Limbo—an endless expanse of stars and darkness that somehow managed to be both beautiful and terrifying.
Illyana released Selyem's hand and moved to the window, her back to the room. Her reflection in the glass was pale, almost ghostly, her platinum hair a stark contrast to the darkness beyond. She stood there for a long moment, tension visible in the set of her shoulders, the rigid line of her spine.
"You're scared," Selyem said softly. It wasn't an accusation—just an observation, offered without judgment.
Illyana's laugh was hollow. "Scared. The Darkchild. Mistress of Limbo. Queen of a thousand demons." She turned, and her eyes were haunted. "You have no idea how many enemies would love to hear that word applied to me."
"I don't care about your enemies." Selyem crossed the room slowly, giving Illyana time to retreat if she wanted. She didn't move as Selyem approached, stopping just a breath away. "I care about you. Right now. In this moment."
"Why?" The word was raw, torn from somewhere deep in Illyana's chest. "Why do you care? You barely know me. You've seen me at my worst—cold, controlling, cruel. And still you stay. Why?"
Selyem reached out, fingers brushing lightly against Illyana's jaw. The touch was soft, questioning, asking permission rather than demanding. "Because I see more than that. I see someone who's been alone for so long they've forgotten what it feels like to let someone in. I see someone who's built walls so high they've trapped themselves inside. I see someone who's terrified of losing control, because losing control means letting go of the only thing that's kept her alive."
Illyana's breath caught. Her hand came up to cover Selyem's, pressing it more firmly against her cheek. "You see too much."
"Or maybe I see exactly what you need me to see." Selyem stepped closer, her body brushing against Illyana's. "You don't have to be the Darkchild with me. You don't have to be the queen, the ruler, the warrior. You can just be Illyana. The woman who's scared, and tired, and wants someone to hold her."
The vulnerability in those words cracked something open inside Illyana. She had been powerful for so long—had clawed her way back from the depths of Limbo's corruption, had forged herself into a weapon, a ruler, a force of nature. But power was lonely. Dominance was isolating. And no one had ever offered her the simple, terrifying gift of softness.
"You want to lead," Illyana whispered, and it wasn't a question. "You want me to let go."
Selyem nodded, her dark eyes steady. "I want you to trust me. Just this once. Let me take care of you." A ghost of a smile played at her lips. "I promise I won't break you."
Illyana's laugh was shaky, but genuine. "I might break you."
"We'll find out." Selyem's hands slid to Illyana's waist, tugging her closer. "But I'm harder to break than I look."
The kiss that followed was nothing like their previous encounters. There was no dominance, no battle for control, no sharp edges. It was slow, tentative, a question asked and answered in the press of lips and the brush of tongues. Illyana melted into it, her hands coming up to cup Selyem's face as if she were something precious, something to be cherished.
Selyem guided her backward toward the bed, and Illyana went willingly. The backs of her knees hit the edge of the mattress, and she sank onto the silk sheets, looking up at Selyem with an expression that was equal parts wonder and fear. The candlelight played across Selyem's features, illuminating the gentle curve of her smile, the warmth in her brown eyes.
"You're beautiful," Selyem said, and the words were so simple, so honest, that they made Illyana's chest ache.
"Don't—" Illyana started, but Selyem silenced her with another kiss, deepening it slowly, deliberately. Her hands found the fastenings of Illyana's armor, working them loose with patient precision.
"This is different," Selyem murmured against her lips. "I know it is. You're used to being in control, used to taking what you want. But this time—" she drew back just enough to meet Illyana's eyes "—this time, I want you to let go. I want to worship you. I want to take care of you. Will you let me?"
Illyana's throat was tight. She felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with the armor Selyem was slowly peeling away. This was vulnerability of a different kind—emotional, psychological, the surrender of self that was so much harder than the surrender of body. She had submitted to demons, to corruption, to the darkest parts of herself. But submitting to tenderness, to gentleness, to someone who genuinely cared about her wellbeing? That was terrifying.
But Selyem's eyes held no judgment, no impatience. Just warmth, and patience, and a quiet strength that Illyana had never expected to find in someone so light.
"Yes," Illyana breathed, the word barely audible. "Yes, I'll let you."
Selyem's smile was radiant. She finished undoing the armor, letting each piece fall away until Illyana was bare before her. The Darkchild, stripped of her power, her symbols of authority, her defenses—just a woman, pale and beautiful and achingly vulnerable. Selyem drank in the sight of her, reverent.
"You're so perfect," she murmured, tracing a finger down the center of Illyana's chest, over her sternum, between her breasts, across her stomach. Illyana shivered at the touch, goosebumps rising on her skin.
"Perfect isn't—" Illyana's protest died as Selyem's finger reached the junction of her thighs, not pressing, just resting there, a promise of more to come.
"Don't argue with me," Selyem said gently. "Just feel."
She lowered her head, pressing a kiss to Illyana's collarbone, then another, and another, working her way slowly down Illyana's body. Each kiss was soft, deliberate, a brand of affection rather than possession. Illyana's hands found their way into Selyem's dark hair, not pulling, just holding, grounding herself in the reality of this moment.
Selyem trailed her lips down to Illyana's breasts, taking one nipple into her mouth and lavishing it with attention—teasing with her tongue, grazing with her teeth, sucking gently until Illyana gasped and arched into the touch. Then she moved to the other, giving it equal treatment, her hand coming up to knead the first breast as she worked.
"Oh, fuck," Illyana breathed, her head falling back against the pillows. "That—that feels—"
"Good?" Selyem asked, lifting her head just enough to meet Illyana's eyes. "I want it to feel good. I want to make you feel things you've never felt before."
"Bold claim," Illyana managed, but her voice was breathless.
Selyem grinned. "I'm a bold woman." She resumed her descent, kissing down Illyana's stomach, her tongue tracing lazy circles around her navel before continuing lower. Illyana's breath quickened, her hips twitching with anticipation.
When Selyem finally reached her destination, she paused, looking up at Illyana through her lashes. "Tell me what you want."
"I want—" Illyana's voice caught. "I want you to taste me. I want to feel your mouth on me. I want you to make me come until I can't remember my own name."
Selyem's smile was dark and promising. "As you wish."
She lowered her head, and her tongue found Illyana's wet heat with unerring accuracy. The first stroke was slow, exploratory, tasting Illyana's essence as if savoring a fine wine. Illyana moaned, her hips bucking instinctively, but Selyem placed a firm hand on her stomach, holding her down.
"Patience," Selyem murmured against her skin. "Let me take my time."
And she did. She traced patterns across Illyana's folds, teasing but not entering, drawing out the anticipation until Illyana was trembling with need. Then she finally—finally—laved her tongue through Illyana's slick folds, finding her clit and circling it with deliberate precision.
"Yes," Illyana gasped, her fingers tightening in Selyem's hair. "Right there. Don't stop. Please don't stop."
Selyem didn't stop. She worked Illyana's clit with her tongue, varying pressure and speed, driving her higher and higher until she was a writhing mess on the silk sheets. Her legs had fallen open, inviting Selyem deeper, and Selyem took full advantage, sliding one finger inside her and Crooking it just right.
Illyana cried out, her back arching off the bed. "Oh god, yes, right there, don't you fucking dare stop—"
Selyem added a second finger, stretching Illyana deliciously, and she curled her tongue around the bundle of nerves at the same time, creating a symphony of sensation that made Illyana scream. Selyem was relentless, driving her toward the edge with single-minded focus, and when Illyana finally tipped over, it was with a keening wail that echoed through the chamber.
Her orgasm crashed over her like a tidal wave, consuming her, dissolving her into pure sensation. Spots danced behind her eyes as she gasped and shuddered, riding wave after wave of pleasure. Selyem stayed with her through it all, gentling her touches until the last tremors subsided.
Illyana lay there, panting, her body boneless and her mind blank. She had never—gods, she had never—sex had always been a power play, a game of dominance and submission. But this? This was something else entirely. This was giving, not taking. This was tenderness, not conquest. This was love, maybe, or at least something that looked like it from a distance.
Selyem crawled up her body, pressing soft kisses along the way, and finally settled beside her, propping herself up on one elbow to look down at Illyana's dazed expression. "You okay?"
Illyana blinked up at her, trying to find words. "I'm... I don't think I've ever been okay-er." She laughed weakly. "That was... what the fuck was that?"
"Good, I hope?" Selyem's smile was soft, almost shy.
"Good doesn't even begin to cover it." Illyana reached up, pulling Selyem down for a deep, languid kiss, tasting herself on the other woman's lips. "You're extraordinary, you know that?"
Selyem hummed against her mouth. "I was thinking the same thing about you." She pulled back, her expression turning serious. "But I want to do more. I want to make love to you, Illyana. Not just fuck you. Not just dominate you. I want to make love to you. Is that okay?"
Illyana's heart stuttered in her chest. No one had ever asked her that before. No one had ever offered to make love to her—it was always about power, about control, about claiming and being claimed. But Selyem was offering something different, something softer.
"Yes," Illyana whispered, and she meant it with her whole being. "Yes, please."
Selyem shifted, positioning herself between Illyana's legs, her body covering the other woman's. She kissed Illyana deeply as she guided herself to Illyana's entrance, the head of her own arousal pressing against Illyana's slick heat. Illyana wrapped her legs around Selyem's waist, pulling her closer, inviting her in.
Selyem entered her slowly, inch by inch, giving Illyana time to adjust. They both moaned as Selyem sank fully into her, their bodies joining completely. For a moment, they stayed like that, connected, breathing together, hearts beating in tandem.
"You feel incredible," Selyem breathed against Illyana's lips.
"So do you," Illyana managed, her voice thick with emotion. "So fucking incredible."
Selyem began to move, her thrusts slow and deep, each one a declaration of intent. She set a rhythm that was almost languid, designed to prolong every moment of contact. Her hands roamed Illyana's body, touching her everywhere—her breasts, her hips, her thighs, her face—as if memorizing every inch of her.
Illyana had never felt so exposed, so vulnerable, so completely seen. And yet, paradoxically, she had never felt so safe. Selyem's arms around her, Selyem's body against hers, Selyem's eyes looking into hers with such tenderness—it was a shelter she hadn't known she needed.
"I've got you," Selyem murmured, her voice steady despite her own rising pleasure. "I've got you, Illyana. You're safe. I'm not going to hurt you."
"I know," Illyana whispered, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. "I know you won't."
Selyem kissed her again, swallowing her soft cries of pleasure as she quickened her pace. The intimacy was overwhelming, bordering on too much—but it was exactly what Illyana needed. She surrendered completely, letting go of all control, all fear, all the carefully constructed walls she'd built around her heart.
She let herself be loved.
And when she came again, it was with a sob of release, her body clenching around Selyem's as waves of pleasure rolled through her. Selyem followed a moment later, her own orgasm triggering as she felt Illyana's climax, and she buried her face in the curve of Illyana's neck, muffling her cry.
They lay together afterward, tangled in the sheets, slick with sweat and sex, breathing in unison. Illyana's hand traced lazy patterns on Selyem's back while Selyem pressed soft kisses to her shoulder.
"I don't know what this is," Illyana finally said, her voice quiet and raw. "I don't know what we are. But I know I don't want it to end."
Selyem lifted her head, meeting Illyana's eyes. "Who says it has to end?"
Illyana's laugh was watery. "Everything ends. I've learned that lesson too many times to count."
"Maybe." Selyem pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "But maybe not this. Maybe this is something worth holding onto."
Illyana stared at her, this impossible woman who had walked into her realm and refused to be cowed, refused to be broken, refused to be anything but exactly who she was. In that moment, something shifted in Illyana's chest—a wall she had built centuries ago began to crack.
"Stay with me," she said, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. "Not just tonight. Stay with me. In Limbo. At my side."
Selyem's smile was soft, wondering. "Illyana Rasputin, are you asking me to be your queen?"
Illyana's cheeks flushed—actually flushed. The Darkchild, blushing like a maiden. "I'm asking you to be mine. However you want to define that. I just... I don't want to lose you. Not after I've finally found you."
Selyem leaned in, brushing her lips against Illyana's. "I'm not going anywhere. Not unless you try to send me away."
"I won't." Illyana's arms tightened around her. "I promise I won't."
They kissed again, slow and sweet, and in that moment, the weight of kingdoms and the threat of intruders faded to the background. There was only this—two women, bound by desire and something deeper, something neither of them had expected to find.
The candle flames flickered in their blue light, casting dancing shadows across the room. Somewhere in the depths of Limbo, a door that had been closed for centuries creaked open just a crack, letting in a sliver of light.
But for now, Illyana and Silk existed in their own little world, wrapped in each other's arms, breathing each other's air, content in the simple miracle of being together. The future was uncertain, scary, full of threats and challenges. But they would face it together, whatever came.
Illyana pressed her face into Selyem's hair, inhaling deeply. She smelled like smoke and silk and something uniquely, irrefutably Cindy. It was the scent of home, she realized. The scent of safety. The scent of someone who had looked at the Darkchild and seen a woman worth staying for.
"I love you," Illyana whispered, so quietly she wasn't sure she'd said it at all.
But Selyem heard her. She pulled back just enough to meet Illyana's eyes, her own shining with unshed tears. "I love you too. I didn't plan this. I didn't expect this. But I love you."
Illyana laughed, and the sound was bright, real, unguarded. "Miss Cindy Moon, you continue to surprise me."
"And you, Magik," Selyem said softly, "continue to amaze me."
They sealed the words with a kiss, and in the depths of Limbo, something ancient and powerful stirred. But for now, the future could wait. All that mattered was this moment, this woman, this love.
And Illyana Rasputin, who had ruled a hell dimension alone for so long, finally felt like she wasn't alone anymore.
