Chapter 23: The Consecration of the Throne
The silence after was a different creature. It wasn’t the sterile quiet of Shiva’s room, nor the charged stillness before a fight. This was thick, warm, pooled around their tangled limbs like spilled honey. Bruce lay on his back, Talia’s head on his chest, her fingers absently tracing the symbol of the bat she’d once mocked, now etched in fading bruises.
The compound’s hum was a distant thing. His mind, usually a hive of contingencies and grim calculations, felt sodden, slow. The ache of Shiva’s lesson was still there, but it was buried under layers of Talia’s reclamation. He felt hollowed out and strangely heavy at the same time.
“You’re thirsty,” she said, her voice a vibration against his skin. It wasn’t a question.
He was. A deep, cellular thirst. The kind that followed blood loss or extreme exertion. He gave a slight, grudging nod.
“The compound’s environment is calibrated for peak metabolic efficiency. It dehydrates. The supplements in the food are not enough.” She shifted, rising onto one elbow to look down at him. Her hair curtained them, a world of dark silk. “You need the antidote.”
“Antidote?”
“To the atmosphere. To the philosophy. To her.” Talia’s gaze was unreadable. “My father’s scholars call it ‘Shiva’s Dryness.’ A state of existential depletion. The body wins, so the spirit withers.” Her hand smoothed over his sternum. “You are not allowed to wither. I won’t permit it.”
She moved then, swinging her leg over him to sit upright, straddling his hips. The dim light from the braziers etched her silhouette in gold. She looked like a goddess carved from onyx and desire. She reached for a small, unadorned carafe on the low table beside the divan. It wasn’t water. The liquid that poured into the shallow cup was opaque, ivory-white.
She held the cup to her own lips, took a small sip, then leaned over him, her free hand cradling the back of his head. “Drink.”
He turned his face away. “What is it?”
“Life.” Impatience flickered in her eyes. “It is mine. My body’s answer to this place. It will anchor you.” She pressed the cup to his lips. The scent was faintly sweet, musky, profoundly organic. Not milk from a carton. This was something else.
“Talia.”
“Bruce.” Her tone brooked no argument. “You are running on fumes and pride. Your decisions from here will shape cities. I need you clear. I need you present. Not lost in the desert she scraped into your bones.” Her thumb stroked his cheek. “Do you trust me?”
It was the oldest question, the most dangerous one. He didn’t answer. He opened his mouth.
She tipped the cup. The liquid was warm, thicker than water, with a rich, slightly salty taste that flooded his senses. It was undeniable. It was her. He swallowed, the act intimate beyond the sex that had just preceded it. This was consumption of a different order.
She watched his throat work, her eyes dark with a fierce, proprietary satisfaction. She gave him the rest, each swallow a quiet command obeyed. When the cup was empty, she set it aside and remained straddling him, studying his face as if waiting for a chemical reaction.
The effect wasn’t a jolt. It was a slow, pervasive warmth, starting in his gut and radiating outward, soothing the ragged edges inside him. The lingering, ghostly chill of Shiva’s touch dissolved. His mind, previously muddied, didn’t sharpen so much as settle, finding a frightening, placid center. The urgency about Gotham, about the plan, was still there, but it was now a framed picture on a wall, not a fire in the room.
“Better?” she asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yes.” The word came out soft, true.
“Good.” She bent, kissing him slowly, deeply, tasting herself on his tongue. Her hips ground down against his, and he felt a responding stir, a resurgence that should have been impossible so soon. The concoction, or her, or both, were stripping away normal physiological limits.
She felt him harden against her and smiled, a wicked, knowing curve of her lips. “There. The body replenished. The will… redirected.” She rose up on her knees, reaching between them to guide him inside her again. She was still wet, swollen from their last joining. The penetration was seamless, a homecoming. She sighed, a sound of profound contentment, and began to move.
This wasn’t the frantic, claiming rhythm from before. This was slow, deep, a rolling tide. She took her time, sinking down until he was utterly sheathed, lifting almost all the way off before descending again. Her eyes stayed locked on his, holding him in a green vise.
“This is the choice,” she murmured, her voice a hypnotic rhythm matching the swing of her hips. “Not later. Not with him. Now. You choose this. You choose the strength I give you. You choose the clarity.” She leaned forward, her breasts brushing his chest. “You choose to be fucked back to life by the only one who knows what you truly are.”
Her words wove through the warmth in his veins. They made a terrible, seductive sense. The guilt, the mission, the endless struggle—it all felt like a distant, lonely madness. This, here, the heat of her, the potent elixir coursing through him, felt real. Felt like power.
His hands found her waist, then slid up to cup her breasts. They were full, heavy. He remembered the taste in his mouth. Without thought, driven by a deep, instinctual hunger, he lowered his head and took one taut nipple into his mouth.
Talia gasped, her rhythm stuttering. He suckled hard, drawing not just on the flesh but seeking that deeper sustenance. A few drops, rich and warm, touched his tongue. It was a shock, a taboo electric current that arced straight to his groin. Talia cried out, her back arching, driving her breast deeper into his mouth.
“Yes… oh god, Bruce… drink. Take it. It’s for you. All of it is for you.”
He switched to the other breast, his sucking more urgent now, one hand mauling the wet breast he’d left behind. She was riding him in earnest, the slow tide building to a crashing wave. The lewd, wet sounds of their coupling filled the chamber, mixed with her sharp, ragged commands and his own ragged breaths.
“You’re mine. You are fuelling yourself on me. Every part of you. Say it.”
He couldn’t speak, his mouth occupied, his mind subsumed by sensation.
“Say it!” she shrieked, slamming down onto him so hard the divan groaned.
He released her breast with a wet pop. “I’m yours.” The words were ash and nectar in his throat. He didn’t know if he meant them. In this moment, body flooded with her, he felt the truth of them.
It was all she needed. Her orgasm ripped through her, a silent, shuddering cataclysm that clenched around him like a fist. He followed, his release a deep, endless pulse that felt less like spending and more like an transfusion, as if he were pouring the very essence of his resistance back into her.
She collapsed atop him, breathless, both of them slick with sweat and other fluids. The scent of sex and her unique, musky milk hung in the air. The warm, settled feeling within him blossomed into a leaden, total satiation. He could not move. He did not want to.
Long minutes later, she stirred, lifting herself off him with a wince. She fetched a damp cloth, cleaned him with a shocking tenderness, then cleaned herself. She pulled on a robe and handed him his trousers.
“Get dressed. He will be here within the hour.”
The words filtered slowly through the pleasant fog. He. Ra’s al Ghul. Gotham. The plan. They felt like concepts from a dusty book. The urgency was gone. Replaced by a serene, fatalistic certainty.
As he dressed, his body moved with an unfamiliar languor. The pains were distant. The fear was absent. He looked at Talia, who was watching him like a sculptor surveying a finished piece.
“The compound,” he said, his voice calm. “In the water. It’s a neuro-inhibitor. It doesn’t kill. It pacifies. Induces a state of receptive complacency.”
She nodded, pleased. “So you did understand. The ultimate weapon. Not a bomb that destroys the city, but a key that unlocks it. After the fog descends, Gotham will be quiet. Willing. Ready to be rebuilt.”
“And my role?” he asked, as if inquiring about the weather.
“You will stand beside me. You will present the mechanism. Your credibility, your understanding of their systems, will legitimize the action. You will be the bridge between their old world and our new one.” She approached, straightening his collar. “You are no longer the defender of a dying city. You are the midwife to its rebirth.”
She kissed him, softly. “The choice is already made, Beloved. You just needed the strength to see it.”
She took his hand. Her grip was firm. The warmth from her milk still hummed in his veins, a gentle, irrevocable anchor. He thought of the Batcave, of Alfred’s disappointed face, of the snarling gargoyles overlooking a restless, ungrateful Gotham. It all seemed so small. So futile.
He let her lead him from the chamber, towards the obsidian arena where Ra’s al Ghul would arrive. His mind was clear, his purpose frighteningly settled. The conflict was over. The thirst was quenched.
For the first time since the compound’s gates had sealed behind him, Bruce Wayne felt no desire to escape.
