Chapter 47: The Proving Grounds
The sample tubes felt radioactive in his hand. Bruce placed the one containing Damian’s hair into cryogenic storage, the action finalizing the boy’s provisional place in the cave’s ecosystem. The other tube, the one from his own head, he crushed in his fist. The faint crack of plastic was swallowed by the cavern’s hum.
Sleep was a foreign country. He stalked the upper floors of Wayne Manor instead, a specter in silk pajamas. Portraits of dead ancestors judged him from the walls. He paused before his parents’ portrait, the soft, hopeful smiles of Thomas and Martha Wayne a gut-punch every time. What would they see now? A grandson, engineered in a pit, sharpened into a blade. A son, drinking venom from a demon’s breast and calling it survival.
He found himself outside the door to the east wing guest suite. He listened. Not a sound. He keyed in the override code and entered on silent hinges.
Damian was not in bed. He was standing at the window, a small, dark silhouette against the grey dawn bleeding over Gotham’s skyline. He didn’t turn.
“You are checking on your asset,” the boy stated.
“I’m checking on my son.”
Damian’s shoulder gave a minute twitch. “The terms are not mutually exclusive to you. Mother said you view everything through a tactical lens. Even love. Especially love.”
“Your mother is a proficient liar.”
“She said you would say that.” Damian finally turned. He’d changed into clothes Alfred had provided—a simple t-shirt and sweatpants—but he wore them like a uniform. “She also said you taste of guilt and iron. I observed this to be accurate.”
The words, so chillingly clinical, dragged the memory to the surface, raw and pulsing. Bruce leaned against the doorframe, the weight of the last forty-eight hours a physical press. “What else did she tell you about me?”
“That you are the greatest warrior she has ever known. That you are also the most broken. That you hide the break behind walls of money and armor and night. She said the only time the cracks show, the only time you are truly visible, is when you are inside her.”
Bruce’s jaw tightened. “She told a child this?”
“I am not a child. I am a project. And she was briefing the project on its primary progenitor.” Damian took a step closer, his eyes searching Bruce’s face with unnerving acuity. “She said when you fuck her, it’s the only time you’re not pretending. That you get hard from the conflict. That you come hardest when you think you’re defiling something sacred.”
“Stop.”
“Why? Does the truth degrade your operational efficiency?”
The provocation was pure Talia. Bruce pushed off the doorframe, the movement abrupt. “Get some rest. We’ll train in the afternoon.”
“I’ve surpassed the League’s intermediate shinobi curriculum. What can you teach me?”
“How not to be a weapon. How to be a man.”
Damian’s expression flickered, something raw and uncertain flashing in his eyes before the cold analysis slammed back down. “A man is a softer, less efficient form of weapon. Mother taught me that.”
Bruce left, the conversation festering in him. He descended to the cave, not to the gym, but to the central computer. He ran a new algorithm, scanning every digital whisper in Gotham for any trace of Talia or League movement. The system returned a single, cryptic hit: a data packet, heavily encrypted, had been dumped into a secure server at Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Sciences division twelve hours ago. The digital signature was a stylized lotus—Talia’s personal mark.
He suited up. Not the full armor, but the black, graphite-weave undersuit. He took the motorcycle, the roar of the engine a welcome annihilation of thought.
The Applied Sciences lab at this hour was a tomb of dormant innovation. He bypassed security with a series of silent commands, moving through corridors of half-built prototypes and shrouded machinery. The server bank in question was isolated, a black tower in a climate-controlled room.
The packet was a video file. No message. Just a play button hovering in the dark.
He knew it was a trap. A psychological trigger. He pressed play.
The image resolved, shaky at first, taken from a hidden body-cam perspective. It was the arena sanctum, but from a new angle. He saw himself. Caked in dirt and blood, his League tunic torn. He saw Talia, circling him, a gash on her lip, her eyes bright with predatory focus. This was moments before. Moments before the river, before the barlang. The audio was raw, filled with their ragged breathing and the drip of distant water.
On screen, he lunged. A dispassionate part of his brain noted the technical flaws in his form—fatigue, rage, desperation. They grappled, a brutal exchange of joint locks and short, sharp blows meant to disable. He got an arm around her throat from behind. She drove an elbow into his ribs, twice, the impacts making him grunt. She broke the hold, spun, and sank her teeth into the muscle where his neck met his shoulder.
The Bruce on the screen roared, not in pain, but in pure, undiluted fury. He grabbed her hair, yanking her head back, and slammed his mouth onto hers. It wasn’t a kiss. It was a declaration of war with tongues.
The camera angle shifted as she fell back, pulling him down with her. The view was from the floor, looking up. His body covered hers, then shifted. The footage was unflinching, graphic.
He saw his own hand, bloody-knuckled, shove her leather trousers down her hips. He saw her pale skin, the dark thatch of hair between her legs. There was no seduction here, no twisted romance. This was two animals claiming territory.
“Do it,” Talia’s voice hissed from the speaker, thick with blood and want. “Fuck your victory. Fuck your righteousness. Just fuck me, Bruce. Prove you’re still alive under all that stone.”
The Bruce on screen drove into her in one brutal, unyielding thrust. Her back arched off the cold floor, a choked cry escaping her. The camera jolted with the impact.
The video showed it all. The violent, piston-like rhythm of his hips. The sweat dripping from his chin onto her throat. Her legs, scissoring around his back, heels digging into his scarred flesh. His hand fisting in her hair, keeping her head pinned, forcing her to look at him as he took her.
“You like this?” he heard himself snarl, his voice alien, guttural. “This what you wanted? To be conquered by the thing you hate?”
“I don’t hate you,” she gasped, her nails raking down his spine. “I hate that you pretend this isn’t who you are. This is you. The core of you. Pounding into me. Claiming what’s yours.” Her words dissolved into a moan as he angled deeper, a raw, gut-level sound.
The pace was punishing. The wet, rhythmic slap of skin on skin was the only other sound. He watched, detached, as his on-screen counterpart gripped her hip so hard the bruises would bloom later in shades of violet and black. He watched Talia’s face—ecstasy and agony intertwined, her lips parted, her eyes glazed and yet fiercely locked on his.
“Come inside me,” she commanded, her voice dropping to a husky, insistent whisper. “Fill me up with it. I want to feel you dripping out of me for days. I want your seed as a reminder.”
He saw the exact moment he broke. A shudder wracked the body on screen. His head dropped, a strained, helpless sound tearing from his throat as he emptied himself into her, his entire frame seizing with the force of it. Talia’s own climax followed, a silent, breathless convulsion, her internal muscles milking him through the last pulses.
They collapsed into a heap of tangled limbs, breathing in ragged, sour unison. The camera, from its low angle, captured the aftermath: the sheen of sweat and other fluids on their skin, the slow trickle of white from between her thighs onto the dark stone.
Her hand came up, trembling slightly, and touched his jaw. “See?” she whispered, almost tenderly. “No masks. No lies. Just this.”
The video ended. The screen went black, reflecting Bruce’s own horrified face back at him in the darkened server room. He was hard. The visceral, shameful arousal was a bolt of lightning straight to his groin, a purely physical reaction to the raw carnality he’d just witnessed. He hated it. He hated her. He hated himself more.
This was her message. Not a taunt. A receipt. This happened. This is who we are. And your son now knows it.
He ejected the drive and crushed it under his boot heel. The sound was unsatisfying.
When he returned to the cave, the dawn had fully broken, filtering weak light through the waterfall. Damian was in the training area, practicing a series of fluid kata with a practice sword. He moved with eerie, preternatural grace.
He stopped mid-movement as Bruce approached, his eyes dropping to the graphite-weave suit, then back up. He smelled the chill morning air on Bruce, the faint ozone from the servers.
“You saw her,” Damian stated.
Bruce didn’t answer. He walked to the weapons rack, selected a bo staff.
“Train with me,” Bruce said, his voice hollow.
“You are compromised. Your rhythm is off. Your aggression is untempered by strategy. It is wasteful.”
“Now.”
Damian sighed, a small, exasperated sound, and assumed a ready stance with his practice blade. The first clash of wood on wood echoed like a gunshot. Bruce attacked, not with pedagogy, but with a need to purge. He drove the boy back, his strikes faster, harder, fueled by a self-loathing he could no longer contain.
Damian parried, dodged, his small form a blur of efficient motion. But he was being overwhelmed. A sweeping strike from Bruce knocked the practice sword from his hand. Another blow, aimed at his ribs, connected with a muffled thump. Damian gasped, stumbling back.
Bruce froze, the staff poised for another strike. The boy was on the ground, clutching his side, his face a mask of pain and… betrayal. Not the cool assessment of a project. The raw hurt of a child struck by his father.
The staff clattered to the floor. Bruce reached down, a sickening wave of shame crashing over him. “Damian—”
The boy scrambled back, out of reach, his eyes wide. Not with fear. With a terrible, dawning understanding. “She was right,” he whispered, his voice small. “You are broken. And you break everything you touch.”
He got to his feet, moving stiffly, and walked out of the training area without looking back, leaving Bruce alone in the center of the mat, surrounded by the ghosts of his own violence, the taste of Talia’s milk and his own cruelty mixing in his mouth like poison.
