Chapter 6: The Proving Grounds

Dawn was a theoretical concept in the deep rock. A single, sustained chime from a bronze gong vibrating through the stone corridors announced it instead. The sound found Bruce in the sparse cell they had given him, a niche carved into the wall with a pallet and a basin of icy water. He’d been cleaning the shallow cuts from the pit’s stone ledge, the water in the basin pink with his blood. The Lazarus energy had healed the deeper tissue, but the surface remembered.

He dressed in the simple, black training garb left for him: pants, a sleeveless tunic, soft-soled shoes. No armor. No tools. When he stepped into the corridor, Talia was waiting. She wore a robe of midnight blue, her hair braided severely back. She looked pristine, restored, her eyes clear and sharp as broken glass. There was no trace of the frenzied creature who had ridden him in the dark.

“The gong measures the hours of discipline,” she said, turning to lead him deeper. “You have had your hour of rest. Now comes the hour of expression.”

The corridor sloped downward, the air growing cooler, drier. The whisper of distant chanting reached them, a monotonous drone in a language that scraped the mind. The tunnel opened abruptly, and Bruce stopped.

The arena was a natural geode the size of a cathedral, its domed ceiling lost in darkness. The floor was polished obsidian, inlaid with vast, geometric runes that glowed with a faint, internal ember-light. Around the perimeter, towering pillars of what looked like solidified shadow seemed to shift and breathe in his peripheral vision. The scent here was sandalwood and crushed belladonna, incense burning in iron braziers that dotted tiered stone benches rising into the gloom. The benches were not empty. Dozens of figures sat in silent rows, their faces masked or shadowed, watching the empty floor.

In the center of the arena, on a raised dais of basalt, stood a throne carved from a single piece of black quartz. It was to this that Talia led him. She did not sit. She turned to face the assembled League.

“This is the Penitent,” she announced, her voice echoing cleanly in the acoustically perfect space. “He seeks understanding. He will learn through doing. The principle is simple: survive the lesson.”

She untied her robe.

It slipped from her shoulders, pooling at her feet. She stood completely naked before her followers, her pregnancy now a clear, elegant curve in the gloom. The ember-light from the runes played over her skin, catching the silvered scars, the dark tips of her breasts. She was utterly unselfconscious, a queen displaying her fertility as a facet of her power. She walked slowly to the throne and sat, arranging herself with a deliberate, lazy grace, one leg draped over an arm, the other planted on the floor. The most intimate part of her was on display, still glistening faintly from their earlier coupling.

“Begin,” she said, the word a soft command that carried to the edges of the chamber.

From four archways at the cardinal points, figures emerged. A dozen. They wore gray, padded tunics, their faces obscured by plain wooden masks. They carried no weapons. Their hands were empty, lethal. They fanned out, forming a loose circle around Bruce.

He settled into his stance, mind calculating vectors, distances, weaknesses. The first two came at him from opposite sides, a classic pincer. He moved, not with the explosive speed of the Batman, but with a tighter, more efficient economy. He caught a wrist, twisted, using the man’s momentum to slam him into the path of the second. A joint popped. A grunt. He was already spinning, a low kick sweeping the legs out from a third. The obsidian was unforgiving; the man’s head cracked against it.

But these were not thugs from Gotham’s alleys. They were League initiates, each a master of a dozen martial arts. They didn’t attack with brute force; they flowed like water, seeking gaps, applying pressure to nerve clusters. A fist glanced off his kidney, a finger jab aimed for his eye. He blocked, countered, broke a nose with a sharp head-butt. The taste of someone else’s blood spattered his lips.

It was a brutal calculus. For every one he disabled, two more pressed the advantage. A blow to his diaphragm stole his wind. A knee smashed into his thigh, lighting up the muscle with hot pain. He fought in a tightening knot of bodies, his world reduced to the next block, the next strike, the next pained exhalation. He could hear his own breath, ragged in his ears, and above it, the quiet, rhythmic sound of Talia’s breathing from the throne. She was watching. He could feel her gaze like a physical touch.

He dismantled a man with a series of elbow strikes to the sternum. He used another as a shield, feeling the impacts meant for him thud into the initiate’s body. He was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow, a shallow slice along his ribs. The tunic was torn, sticking to sweat and blood.

The last two came together. They were better, faster. They fought in silent tandem. One locked his arms in a complex hold from behind while the other drove a palm-heel toward his throat. Bruce dropped his weight suddenly, becoming dead weight, surprising the one behind him. The forward momentum unbalanced them both. He drove his elbow back into the stomach of the holder, broke the grip, and spun, grabbing the wrist of the striker. He used the man’s own force to whip him around in a full circle and release him, sending him flying into the base of the throne’s dais with a crunch of broken wood and bone.

Silence.

The runes pulsed softly. The incense smoke curled. Eleven bodies lay strewn across the glowing geometric lines, some unconscious, some groaning in pain. Bruce stood in the center, chest heaving, sweat and blood dripping from his chin onto the black stone. The adrenaline was a torrent in his veins, mixed with the lingering, febrile buzz of the Pit. He felt savage. Untethered.

From the throne, Talia let out a long, slow sigh. It was a sound of deep satisfaction. She uncrossed her leg and sat forward, her eyes locked on him. She was visibly aroused, her skin flushed, her nipples tight. She hooked a finger, beckoning.

“Come here, Penitent.”

Every disciplined fiber told him to refuse, to turn and walk out of this theater of cruelty. His feet carried him forward. He mounted the dais, the smell of her—sweat, sex, incense—filling his senses. She didn’t rise. She looked up at him, her green eyes blazing with conquest.

“You fought beautifully,” she murmured, her hand reaching out to touch the blood on his chest. She smeared it, painting a wet stripe across his pectoral. “It makes me wet. Can you smell it? I’m dripping for you.”

She spread her legs wider on the throne, an explicit invitation. The evidence of her claim was there, slick and glistening in the low light. The defeated men began to stir, to groan, to lift their heads. They were the audience for this final act.

“Take what you earned,” she whispered, a filthy promise. “Fuck your victory into me. Let them see what a true master looks like.”

The last thread of his restraint snapped. He grabbed her hips, his fingers digging into the soft flesh, and yanked her to the very edge of the throne. He didn’t bother undoing his pants; he just shoved the fabric down his thighs, freeing his cock. It was already iron-hard, throbbing with the aftermath of violence. He gripped himself, slapped the thick head against her clit a few times, making her jolt and gasp.

“Open your fucking mouth,” he growled, a voice she hadn’t heard before—Bruce Wayne buried under Batman, buried under something older and darker.

She obeyed, lips parting, tongue extended. He fed his cock into her mouth, not gently. He pushed past her lips, hitting the back of her throat. She gagged, but took him, her eyes watering as she looked up at him. He fucked her mouth in short, brutal strokes, the wet sounds obscenely loud in the silent arena. He could see the assembled League watching, motionless. He didn’t care.

After a minute, he pulled out, a string of saliva connecting her lips to his glistening crown. “Now turn around,” he ordered, his voice rough.

She pivoted on the throne, bending forward over the cool quartz, presenting herself to him and to the room. He pushed her legs apart with his knee. He didn’t tease. He guided himself to her entrance and drove into her in one deep, punishing thrust.

She screamed, a raw, unfiltered sound of pleasure-pain, her nails scraping against the stone. He was so deep, so impossibly full. He set a merciless pace from the start, each withdrawal followed by a slam that jolted her entire body, that made the throne shudder. The wet, meaty slap of their collision echoed off the cavern walls.

“This what you wanted?” he grunted, his hands clamped on her hips, holding her in place for his pounding. “You wanted them to see? See how I take their fucking goddess?”

“Yes!” she shrieked, pushing back against him. “Harder! God, yes, they see… they see you own me here!”

It was a lie and they both knew it. He didn’t own her. He was a tool of her will, his brutal performance the climax of her lesson. But in the animal truth of the act, the distinction blurred. He fucked her with all the fury and frustration and unwanted desire she had stoked in him. It was a punishment and a worship. He reached around her hip, his fingers finding her clit, rubbing it in fast, rough circles.

“Come for them,” he snarled in her ear. “Come on my cock while they watch you break.”

Her body tightened, coiled, and then shattered. Her inner muscles clamped around him in a vice-like series of contractions, milking his length. She cried out, a sound that was half-sob, half-triumph, her body shaking violently. The intensity of her orgasm pulled his own from the depths. With a final, deep plunge, he buried himself to the hilt and let go. He came with a guttural roar, pumping his release into her in hot, relentless pulses, marking her insides as his own, claiming the womb that already held his child.

He stayed there, slumped over her back for a long moment, both of them panting, slick with sweat. Slowly, he pulled out. The sound was lewd in the absolute quiet. He straightened his clothes.

Talia slowly pushed herself upright on the throne. She did not cover herself. She turned, sitting once more in a pool of their mingled fluids, a queen on a sullied throne. She looked past Bruce, to her scattered, defeated warriors.

“You have witnessed,” she said, her voice hoarse but clear. “This is the nature of power. It is not clean. It is not distant. It is this. Intimate. Consuming.” Her eyes found Bruce’s. “The lesson is learned. You may go.”

Bruce turned and walked off the dais. He stepped over the still-prone form of the last initiate, his shoes leaving faint bloody prints on the obsidian. The masked faces watched him pass, but they were no longer just watching the Penitent. They were watching the instrument of their mistress’s will, the man who had been baptized in the Pit
