Then the static in his mind finally won, and everything went dark.
Consciousness returned as a series of disaggregated shocks. A jackhammer sun through thin curtains. A tongue like shredded felt. A deep, visceral ache in his hips and lower back. The smell of stale sweat, sex, and carpet. Leo peeled his face from the rug, his vision swimming. He was naked from the waist down, his jeans a tangled shackle around one ankle. Dried flumes of his own come crusted his stomach. Alex was a snoring heap beside him, still mostly dressed, one arm thrown over his eyes.
On the couch, Emily stirred, groaning. Leroy was already sitting up, his head in his hands, his broad shoulders hunched in palpable misery.
No one spoke. The silence was a thick, hungover membrane stretched between them, vibrating with the memory of the night’s atomic disintegration. What words were there? Good morning? Leo carefully extracted his leg from his jeans, wincing at the sticky, tender ache between his legs. He stood, the room tilting, and gathered his clothes with a thief’s hurried silence.
He dressed in the bathroom, avoiding the wreck in the mirror. When he emerged, a similar shuffling exodus was underway. Emily was pulling on her jacket, her face green. Leroy nodded at him, a wordless acknowledgment of shared ruin. Alex remained on the floor, a monument to collapse.
“I’m going to swallow a gallon of water and then maybe die,” Emily whispered, her voice scraped raw.
